<ul class="summary-list"><li>Adidas Yeezy is gone, but Adidas terrace shoes like the Samba and Gazelle can pick up the slack.</li><li>CEO Bjørn Gulden called the sneakers a very fast-growing "franchise" for the company.</li></ul><p>The Adidas Yeezy business is gone — minus the remaining inventory worth $1.3 billion in sales that the sportswear giant has yet to shed. </p><p>And while Adidas still has some A-list celebrity partnerships, it believes its classic sneakers will go a long way in recouping some of the lost Yeezy revenue. According to TD Cowen, Yeezy <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/adidas-hasnt-decided-what-to-do-with-526-million-yeezys-2023-3">generated $1.2 billion in sales in 2022</a>, prior to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kanye-wests-turbulent-9-year-history-with-adidas-2022-11">Adidas cutting ties with Ye in October.</a></p><p>Adidas Sambas, Gazelles, and Spezial sneakers, what the company calls <a href="https://www.adidas.co.uk/terrace-shoes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Terrace shoes,</a> are having a moment. The sneakers have become a staple in retro <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nike-adidas-new-balance-hoka-sneaker-fashion-style-trends-1-2023">1990s clothing styles</a> that have been brought back by Gen Z consumers. The sneakers have a long history with the brand. Adidas first introduced Sambas in 1949. Gazelles were first released in the 1960s; Spezials came out in the late 70s.</p><p>"We currently have maybe the hottest shoe in the market, in the segment we call Terrace, and it's the Samba," CEO Bjørn Gulden told analysts on a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/adidas-ceo-worries-donated-yeezys-will-be-resold-2022-03">fourth-quarter earnings call</a> this week. "And you have seen it for a while, coming in on fashion shows and also on celebrities that have actually bought the shoes themselves."</p><p>Gulden called Sambas, Gazelles, and Spezials a very fast-growing "franchise" for Adidas. The company launched a pop-up store in Shanghai this week dedicated to the Samba.</p><div type="image" title="Adidas Gazelle with Gucci pants" height="2214" width="2952" msid="98567013" hostid="261"></div><p>"And as you can see, people are lining up to buy only one product," Gulden said while directing analysts to a prepared visual presentation.</p><p>"It's hot in Asia, hot in Latin America, hot in Europe, and in America, and I can't remember the last time I saw that," he added, speaking of Terrace shoes. "So look for the Samba, look for the Gazelle, and ironically also the Spezial, which was actually a handball shoe that even I used when I was playing, which probably tells you how old I'm getting."</p><p>In 2022, Adidas launched a collection with Gucci that <a href="https://www.gucci.com/us/en/pr/women/shoes-for-women/sneakers-for-women/adidas-x-gucci-womens-gazelle-sneaker-p-707868UWV207162" target="_blank" rel="noopener">included several new Gazelle</a> colorways. This year, Adidas is also partnering with fashion designer <a href="https://sneakernews.com/2022/11/29/jjjjound-adidas-samba/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">JJJJound on at least two pairs of Sambas</a>. JJJJound has previously worked with brands like New Balance, Asics, and A Bathing Ape on sneaker collaborations.</p><p>"I think it's something that if we manage it correctly, can be millions and millions of pairs," Gulden told analysts. " And it's the first test to see if we can manage, now, a new franchise in the right way by keeping it alive, heating it up every quarter, without over distributing it, so we start to discount."</p>

For example, DTC laundry brand Frey uses Wove to share lookalike audiences with other brands, <a href="https://www.adweek.com/brand-marketing/how-dtc-brands-are-lending-each-other-their-customers/">Adweek reported in May.</a> According to its website, Wove's clients also include big DTC brands Parachute, Plated, and ClassPass.</p><p>Until now, Wove has focused on email and social <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> and will now build data products that help marketers advertise on TV using first-party data, according to Ashwin Navin, CEO and co-founder of Samba TV.</p><p>In one example, he said Wove's technology will be able retarget web surfers with TV ads. </p><p>Wove has raised $12 million and is founded by former Liveramp employees Eddie Siegel, Armaan Sarkar, and Chris Taylor.</p><p>With privacy regulation growing, big platforms like Facebook and Google are favoring first-party data in their advertising products. Navin also said marketers are starting to question the accuracy of third-party data.</p><p>"The problem with over-the-top television is that it's not cookie-based and it's generally not targeted today," he said. These 10 tech companies are trying to help marketers survive.</a></em></p><h2>SambaTV wants to fix problems like frequency capping and measurement</h2><p>Navin wouldn't disclose terms of the deal but said it's being funded using Samba TV's Series B <a href="https://platform.samba.tv/samba-tv-raises-30-million-growth-capital/">funding of $30 million in 2017.</a> Samba TV used the fund to acquire two other companies in the past year: <a href="https://adexchanger.com/digital-tv/samba-tv-acquires-acr-startup-axwave-to-slurp-up-more-acr-data/">Screen6 and Axwave.</a></p><p>Navin said Samba TV has broke even for "a number of years," and that the acquisitions are meant to fill targeting and measurement holes in Samba TV's tech stack.</p><p>Screen6's ID software matches advertisers' data to cap the number of ads people see in a given timeframe. Axwave tracks when and where ads on linear and connected TVs run, which Samba TV matches with its own viewership data to analyze reach and frequency, Navin said.</p><p>"We believe strongly in the potential of using first-party data in the television space and over-the-top," he said. Samba TV is acquiring a startup that helps direct-to-consumer brands like Parachute and Plated swap data to improve TV ad targeting

Rio De Janeiro, Apr 8 (AP) Rio de Janeiro's samba schools usually spend the year furiously sewing costumes for the city's blowout Carnival celebration. <p>Now, nimble fingers are working to protect lives instead, making medical outfits for hospital workers who face a surge of coronavirus patients.</p><p>Dr. Wille Baracho on Tuesday carried rolls of fabric into the Unidos de Padre Miguel samba school's workshop in the Vila Vintem favela. Inside, seamstresses perched on plastic chairs busily transformed beige and pale yellow fabric into medical wear.</p><p>The initiative started with Baracho and one of his colleagues at a nearby hospital emergency room where they have seen a shortage of materials. Both happen to sit on Padre Miguel's board and saw a chance to redirect labor. The city joined in, donating thousands of yards of fabric, and the seamstresses set to work Friday.</p><p>"We have some friends who died already, some who are on leave or sick with the disease," Baracho said, adding that he has found it more fulfilling to produce medical garb than the normal glittery costumes. </p><p>"I think everyone here would say that. Carnival is a different happiness: fun, a pleasure. This is a mission." The Unidos da Vila Isabel samba school joined the effort Tuesday, with two seamstresses getting to work in a warehouse. Behind them, huge blue and green feather headdresses sat on the floor.</p><p>More will start sewing soon, both from Vila Isabel and elsewhere as top samba schools across the city are expected to sign on, said Eneida Reis, executive director of assistance at RioSaude, a public company that manages municipal health units.</p><p>Every willing hand is welcome. At just a single municipal hospital treating COVID-19 patients, doctors and nurses can go through 2,000 sets of scrubs every day, according to city officials.</p><p>It's not Rio's first move to channel Carnival spirit toward combating the coronavirus. The parade grounds where samba schools compete, known as the Sambadrome, has started sheltering homeless people who are considered especially vulnerable during the outbreak.</p><p>Rio has Brazil's second-biggest cluster of COVID-19 patients, with 1,250 cases, plus a few hundred more in the surrounding metropolitan area, the state health secretariat says.</p><p>For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. But it can result in far more severe illness, including pneumonia and death, for some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems.</p><p>At the Padre Miguel workshop, Jucelia Abreu and her fellow seamstresses feed fabric through their machines and snip at threads. Others from the samba school are doing the same at home. Together, the team churns out some 450 medical outfits each day.</p>"The directors asked us if we would be willing to volunteer, and I accepted, because it's very gratifying to help the people," Abreu said through a face mask. Rio samba schools start sewing scrubs in coronavirus effort

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP Photo/Rick Scuteri</span></p><p class="caption">Fox News host Sean Hannity</p></div><p></p></div></div>Many Fox News viewers turned against the Hollywood elite on Sunday night, helping to drive down ratings for the Oscars, according to a report by analytics firm Samba TV.</p><p>Samba TV did an <a href="http://www.broadcastingcable.com/news/currency/oscar-broadcast-tuned-out-fox-news-viewers/163671">analysis</a> of which heavy cable news watchers didn't tune into the Oscars this year, after watching in 2016, and found that 48% were Fox News viewers, 30% were CNN viewers, and 15% were MSNBC viewers.</p><p>This changed the makeup of the Oscars audience, Samba TV found. The 2016 audience was 46% Fox News viewers, 32% CNN viewers, and 16% MSNBC viewers. But for 2017, it was 45% CNN, 23% MSNBC, and 30% Fox News.</p><p><span>In all, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/oscars-tv-ratings-viewership-abc-2017-2">according to Nielsen ratings data</a>, 32.9 million people watched the ABC broadcast. That's compared to the 34.4 million viewers who watched last year's broadcast. So total viewers dropped by 4%, but in the advertiser-coveted </span>18- to 49-year-old demographic, there was 14% drop in ratings year-over-year.</p><p>"New viewers are showing up to the Oscars, but not enough to replace all the Fox News people who are tuning out the celebrities," Samba TV CEO Ashwin Navin <a href="http://www.broadcastingcable.com/news/currency/oscar-broadcast-tuned-out-fox-news-viewers/163671">told Broadcasting &amp; Cable</a>.</p><p>Hollywood has had a contentious relationship with President Trump, and has often seemed to be in open war with him since he took office. Trump and acting legend Meryl Streep have exchanged barbs, with Trump declaring her "one of the most over-rated actresses" in a tweet, after Streep lambasted him in a Golden Globes speech.</p><p>At the Oscars, host Jimmy Kimmel took repeated shots at Trump, and even tweeted at him at one point during the broadcast.</p><p>It's good to note, however, that <keyword id="6358883" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Politics">politics</keyword> can't entirely explain the ratings drop. She called <a href="https://www.insider.com/dwts-britney-night-olivia-jade-tango-hold-it-against-me-2021-10">her tango performance last week "exhilarating"</a> and said that while she finds it "hard to trust" people, she trusts Chmerkovskiy. Roughly 19,000 tweets used the hashtag "#BoycottMulan" on Twitter in that time period.</p><p>Chinese authorities forced a media blackout on the movie in an effort to hide the growing controversy, according to <a href="https://variety.com/2020/film/news/disney-mulan-china-box-office-1234768301/">Variety</a>.</p><p>Disney hasn't released viewership details for "Mulan" on Disney Plus, but data from the analytics company Samba TV <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/viewership-data-for-mulan-premiere-weekend-on-disney-plus-2020-9">provides a snapshot of how much money it made</a> in its US debut over Labor Day weekend. According to Samba TV, 1.12 million US households watched the movie from September 4 to September 7 on connected TVs, which include smarts TVs, Roku, and gaming consoles but not mobile or laptop viewership.</p><p>At $30 apiece, that means it earned $33.5 million, according to Samba TV estimates. <ul class="summary-list"><li>"<keyword id="829161" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="in-the-heights">In the Heights</keyword>" underwhelmed at the domestic <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword> over the weekend with $11 million.</li><li>But data suggests it also underperformed on <keyword id="7849400" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="HBO-Max">HBO Max</keyword> compared to other <keyword id="14846" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Warner-Bros-">Warner Bros.</keyword> <keyword id="406" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Movies">movies</keyword> this year.</li><li>That means a low theatrical turnout isn't necessarily <keyword id="572624" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Streaming">streaming</keyword>'s fault, in this case.</li></ul><p>"In the Heights," the new movie based on the musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda, underwhelmed at the US box office over the weekend with $11.4 million.</p><p>Its haul was below projections that placed it closer to $20 million, and it failed to top "A Quiet Place Part II," which has been in theaters for two weeks.</p><p>The Warner Bros. film, which was directed by "Crazy Rich Asians" filmmaker Jon M. Chu, was released simultaneously on the <keyword id="6868021" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="WarnerMedia">WarnerMedia</keyword> streaming service HBO Max over the weekend, as are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/warner-bros-movie-2021-debut-hbo-max-theaters-same-day-2020-12">all of Warner Bros.' films this year</a>.</p><p>But data suggests that it's not Max's fault that the movie disappointed at the box office. It also underperformed on the streaming service compared to other new Warner Bros. movies.</p><p>693,000 US households watched at least five minutes of "In the Heights" on HBO Max over the weekend via connected TVs, according to estimates from the analytics company Samba TV. Samba TV tracks viewership on connected TVs, which include smart TVs, streaming devices like Roku, and gaming consoles. (WarnerMedia declined to provide viewership numbers for "In the Heights.")</p><p>Other Warner Bros. releases this year, which have performed better at the box office than "In the Heights" in their opening weekends, also drove more viewership on Max, according to Samba TV data. It suggests that streaming viewership doesn't necessarily cannibalize theatrical attendance.</p><p>Here are four Warner Bros. movies this year that debuted in theaters and on Max simultaneously, and how their opening weekends compared on Max (via Samba TV estimates) and at the box office in the US:</p><ul><li>"Mortal Kombat" - 3.8 million households on Max / $23.3 million at box office</li><li>"Godzilla vs. Kong" - 3.6 million households on Max (five-day weekend) / $48.5 million at box office (five days)</li><li>"The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It" - 1.6 million households on Max $24 million at box office</li><li>"Tom and Jerry" - 1.2 million households on Max / $14.1 million at box office</li></ul><p>Warner Bros. head of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein also implied "In the Heights" had underperformed relative to other releases in comments to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/ca-state-wire-health-coronavirus-pandemic-lifestyle-entertainment-1ea3189be999d78b9e20d18f7b026425">Associated Press</a> on Sunday.</p><p>"Our experience, which is backed up on 'In the Heights,' is that if the movie hits a high level in theaters, it hits a high level on the service," Goldstein said. "If it hits a low level in theaters, it hits a low level on HBO Max. They're really very comparable."</p><p>While "In the Heights" didn't attract as big an audience in its debut as other Warner Bros. releases this year, it's been a hit with critics and has a 97% Rotten Tomatoes critic score. Viewers who did see the movie also seemed to love it; it has a 95% Rotten Tomatoes audience score and an A from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cinemascore-president-interview-on-hollywood-theaters-streaming-2021-2">CinemaScore</a>, which surveys theatrical audiences on a movie's opening night. That means the movie could pick up steam from word-of-mouth buzz.</p><p>Warner Bros. has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-warner-bros-movies-are-performing-box-office-hbo-max-2021-4">largely dominated the box office</a> so far this year despite its movies also streaming, and "In the Heights" seems to be an exception.</p><p>The box office could look more balanced as more studios release delayed tentpole films this summer, though, including Disney's "Black Widow" and Universal's "Fast and Furious 9."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Puma posted quarterly earnings on Wednesday that pushed shares 12% higher.</li><li>The German sportswear giant flagged rising demand for its Palermo sneakers.</li></ul><p>Puma touted rising demand for its retro terrace-style range on Wednesday as it posted <a target="_blank" href="https://about.puma.com/en/newsroom/corporate-news/2024/08-05-2024-puma-delivers-q1-results-fully-line-expectations">first-quarter earnings</a> that were in line with analysts' expectations but still sent shares soaring.</p><p>The German footwear giant's net income and earnings per share fell for the three months ending March 31, but its sales in the Americas rose for the first time in four quarters.</p><p>Puma also said its profit margins had improved "despite major currency headwinds," with the soaring <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/us-dollar-index">US dollar</a> causing <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/eur-usd">the euro</a> to weaken this year.</p><p>In a news conference, CEO Arne Freundt flagged rising demand for the Palermo, which was commonly worn on European soccer terraces in the 1980s.</p><p>Puma relaunched the footwear line last year, tapping up high-profile celebrities including pop superstar <a target="_blank" href="https://www.glamourmagazine.co.uk/article/dua-lipa-puma-palermos-trainers">Dua Lipa</a> and Manchester City FC winger <a target="_blank" href="https://www.soccerbible.com/lifestyle/sneakers/2023/10/jack-grealish-fronts-pumas-forever-palermo-campaign/">Jack Grealish</a> to promote the retro shoes.</p> <p>"We are only six months now in the market with the Palermo, and we see how the franchises are continuing to grow in strength," Freundt said.</p><p>Soaring demand for a similar terrace-style shoe sold by Adidas, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nike-adidas-new-balance-hoka-sneaker-fashion-style-trends-1-2023">Samba</a>, was one of the defining fashion stories of last summer, although the Puma rival recently said it would work to manage demand in a bid to stop the brand becoming a victim of its own success.</p><div type="image" title="Adidas samba sneaker" height="5760" width="8640" msid="109956162" hostid="261"></div><p>Last month, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was widely mocked after attending an interview wearing a pair of Sambas, causing some Britons to conclude that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/apr/06/rishi-sunak-biggest-sartorial-blunder-shoe-in-adidas-samba-trainers">the trend was dead</a>.</p><p>"Anybody in the world can wear our product and I'll be happy if they wear it," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bjorn-gulden-is-trying-to-save-adidas-after-yeezy-controversy-2024-3">Adidas CEO Bjørn Gulden</a> said on an earnings call last week, in response to a question about Sunak's choice of footwear.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/pmmaf-stock">Shares in Puma, which is listed in Frankfurt,</a> jumped just over 12%, wiping out this year's losses and valuing the company at about $8 billion.</p><p>However, that pales in comparison with Adidas, which is worth about $43 billion after the stock rose 22% so far this year.</p>

Shanghai, May 11 (AFP) Fernando skips down the wing and crosses for Ricardo Goulart, who tees up Elkeson to smash the ball into the top corner.<p> Alan and Aloisio join in some Samba-style celebrations as a goal made in Brazil propels China to the 2022 World Cup.</p><p> It is the stuff of make-believe, but the world's most populous nation will soon be able to field a team with a distinctly Brazilian flavour.</p><p> Despite making Elkeson the first Brazilian-born player to represent their national team last year, China's hopes of reaching only a second World Cup hang in the balance after a lacklustre qualifying campaign so far.</p><p> However, naturalised forwards Elkeson and Aloisio are both in coach Li Tie's current squad while Goulart, Alan and Fernando are reportedly close to call-ups having finalised or nearly finalised the paperwork to play for China.</p><p> All five were born in Brazil, are offensive players and, according to transfermarkt.com, are contracted to Fabio Cannavaro's Chinese Super League (CSL) champions Guangzhou Evergrande.</p><p> Another Evergrande player, the former England youth defender Tyias Browning, could also represent China this year.</p><p>It accelerates a strategy, started under ex-coach Marcello Lippi, to bring in naturalised players to bolster a squad that remains thin on talent.</p><p> "Since 2019, Guangzhou Evergrande has helped (these) six players... get their Chinese ID cards and their household registration in Guangzhou," the state-run Guangzhou Daily said.</p><p> "At the same time, Guangzhou Evergrande and the Chinese Football Association have been actively promoting these naturalised players to qualify for the Chinese men's national football team." </p><p> - World Cup dreams -====================</p><p> Evergrande spent 870 million yuan ($122 million) in transfer fees, wages and other costs on the six players, Soccer News said, citing the club's annual report.</p><p> Soccer News said that seven naturalised players could pull on China's red shirts this year as the country attempts to qualify for the Qatar World Cup.</p><p> The seventh is Beijing Guoan's London-born Nico Yennaris, who became China's first naturalised footballer when he made his debut last year and is now known as Li Ke.</p><p> The 26-year-old former Arsenal and England youth midfielder, whose mother is Chinese, was named alongside Elkeson and debutant Aloisio in the squad that is now in Shanghai for a training camp.</p><p> It is the first time in Chinese football history that three naturalised players have been called up.</p><p> The squad will be limited to practice matches because international games -- among them World Cup qualifiers -- are suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic.</p><p> Although football success, including hosting and even winning the World Cup, is a stated ambition of President Xi Jinping, China's hopes of reaching Qatar 2022 are in real jeopardy.</p><p> Italian World Cup winner Lippi quit for a second time in November after China lost 2-1 to Syria, despite the presence of Elkeson -- Chinese name Ai Kesen -- and Yennaris.</p><p> The defeat left China trailing the Group A leaders by eight points, albeit with a game in hand.</p><p> The top team in each group automatically reaches the next stage of qualifying, along with the four best runners-up.</p><p>- 'Sense of belonging to China' -=================================</p><p> Recruiting foreign-born players is not unique to China but it is a new approach for the country and some experts, fans and former players have voiced concern about the quick-fix policy.</p><p> Chinese state media has generally taken the line that as long as they improve the national side and win their places on merit, they deserve to play.</p><p> China are desperate to get to the World Cup again having made it only once, in 2002, when they were dumped out after failing to score a goal or win a point.</p><p> That the Brazilians are all attacking players reflects how badly China have struggled for goals in recent years.</p><p> China's approach also mirrors a trend seen at Chinese clubs, including Guangzhou Evergrande whose eight national titles and two Asian Champions League wins have relied heavily on South American talent.</p><p> Ahead of giving the 31-year-old Aloisio his call-up, Li signalled that he will take a pragmatic approach.</p><p> "Undoubtedly, naturalised players can make the national team stronger," he said.</p> "As long as you have the ability, a sense of belonging to China and a sense of collective honour, you can be selected for the squad." There were 19,236 tweets using the hashtag "#BoycottMulan" on Twitter from September 1 to September 9. </p><p>43.73% of tweets about "Mulan" in that time frame expressed negative sentiment, according to SEMrush. 40.39% were positive and 15.88% were neutral. The company uses machine learning models to identify whether a tweet is positive, negative, or neutral in tone. For a tweet to be negative, it had to contain a word or phrase considered negative by the model, such as "terrible," "disaster," or in this case, "boycott Mulan."</p><p>Calls to<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mulan-boycott-calls-gain-steam-as-movie-available-disney-plus-2020-9"> boycott the movie</a> were reignited ahead of its release last week because its star, Liu Yifei, had shared a post to Chinese social network Weibo last August <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boycott-mulan-trends-disney-actress-liu-yifei-hong-kong-police-2019-8">in support of Hong Kong police</a> during the city's pro-democracy protests. At the time, "#BoycottMulan" was trending on Twitter.</p><p>A new controversy erupted after the movie's release, as the end credits thanked government entities in China's Xinjiang region that had been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/disney-mulan-thanks-china-filming-xinjiang-uighur-muslims-detained-2020-9">implicated in human-rights violations against Muslim Uighurs</a>. Parts of the movie were filmed in the region.</p><p>Amid the controversy, "Mulan" was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/viewership-data-for-mulan-premiere-weekend-on-disney-plus-2020-9">viewed by 1.12 million US households</a> over the Labor Day weekend from Friday to Monday, according to analytics company Samba TV, which measures connected TV devices like smart TVs and Roku, but not mobile or laptop viewing. </p><p>Disney Plus subscribers could purchase the movie at an additional $30 fee (it will be available to all subscribers at no additional cost in December).
