<ul><li><strong>Dr. <keyword id="16740519" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="samantha-ellison" source="Orion">Samantha Ellison</keyword> worked at Botox parties on her days off as a traveling physician.</strong></li><li><strong>She's given Botox to politicians, celebrities, lawyers, teachers, colleagues, and exotic dancers.  </strong></li><li><strong>Ellison wants to educate more people about the world of medical aesthetics and its benefits.</strong></li></ul><em>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Dr. Samantha "Sam" Ellison, a hospitalist and medical aesthetician in her 30s, who's based in Sebring, Florida. It's been edited for length and clarity. </em><br /><br />I was first introduced to <a href="https://www.glowday.com/blog/what-is-medical-aesthetics" target="_blank">medical aesthetics</a> during my residency at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. One of my friends was getting married and she had a Botox party for her bridal shower — I'd never been to anything like it. It was a night of laughs and camaraderie but instead of leaving with a typical party favor, I left with a very smooth forehead. <br /><br />I already knew I wanted to go into hospital medicine, but I wanted to add an aesthetic component to my work as well. I've always been immersed in beauty. My mom was a cosmetologist, my husband is one, and I have other family members who are makeup artists and stylists. I wanted to be a doctor to help people, but I didn't want to only focus on the internal parts of my patients. After that bridal shower, I knew I wanted to add Botox to my profession. <br /><br />I'm a freelance hospitalist physician, which means I take care of many kinds of conditions at multiple hospitals. When I first started doing Botox parties in 2021, I'd been practicing medicine for about three years. I worked a seven-days-on, seven-days-off schedule and I'd do two to three Botox parties a week. Most of these parties would happen after work hours or on my days off. <br /><br />Now, my husband and I own a salon and spa where we offer weight-loss and sexual-health services along with Botox and other aesthetic procedures.<br /><br /><h2><strong>Learning to do Botox injections was a matter of understanding the aesthetics </strong></h2>I got my certification to do injections under <a href="https://www.empiremedicaltraining.com/aesthetic-workshops/complete-botox-training/" target="_blank">Empire Medical Training</a>. The program is a two-day training event that costs about $7,000. It requires a lot of didactics then a day of hands-on learning where students are given models or bring their own to apply the principles in real time. <br /><br />After my initial certification, I trained with master injector, Dr. Lanna Cheuk at LC Medical Spa in <keyword id="72226" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-york-city" source="Orion">New York City</keyword>. The training was a six-month fellowship where I did beginning, intermediate, and advanced botox courses as well as other medical aesthetics courses. That training served as the most influential aspect of cultivating my skills, which I've done over years.<br /><br />In order to <a href="https://americanmedspa.org/blog/can-rns-inject-botox-in-florida-the-nursing-board-says-its-complicated" target="_blank">inject Botox in Florida</a>, you have to either be a medical doctor or a nurse practitioner, and an NP is not supposed to perform these injections without the supervision of a medical doctor. I got my medical degree at <keyword id="312495" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="howard-university" source="Orion">Howard University</keyword>, so I already had knowledge about the various muscles, nerves, and vasculature of the face. On the other hand, some people who do injections at Botox parties aren't trained and skilled.<br /><br />Getting injections from people who aren't properly trained can lead to complications, and sometimes clients come to me to reverse those issues. The complications and <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/treatments/botox-side-effects">side effects</a> are rare and typically resolve on their own. Usually, they're just things like mild bruising or pain at the injection sites, which can be treated with a cold compress. <br /><br />A less common issue is eyelid ptosis, which occurs when the toxin from Botox diffuses and reaches the muscle that elevates the eye, making the upper eyelid look droopy and the face look asymmetrical. Eye drops typically prescribed for glaucoma can be used to counteract the effect. <br /><br /><h2><strong>My Botox parties are requested by clientele whose primary concerns are privacy and exclusivity</strong></h2>My husband is also a politician, so a lot of his connections became my connections. Some of my clients have included national politicians and A-listers who sought out a more concierge medical-aesthetics experience. I also service nurses, business executives, lawyers, doctors, and lately a lot of teachers have been requesting Botox parties.<br /><br />Most of the parties are requested by women and there are usually five to 10 people between ages 35 and 50, but my goal is to change that demographic. I want to introduce more people from all walks of life to the world of aesthetics, and educate more men about the benefits of toxin treatments.<br /><br />I also work with exotic dancers. Whenever I've serviced these beautiful ladies and entered into their spaces — the clubs where they work — it's not as quiet as I'm used to in someone's home. You have to deal with loud music or more people around and it's not as controlled an environment, but it's so much fun. <br /><br /><h2><strong>Botox parties are really laid-back </strong></h2>A lot of these Botox parties occur in the evening, so it's popular to have a sleepover where people come in themed pajamas. Hosts have provided pizza, charcuterie boards, or just desserts. Other clients have thrown ice-cream parties. <br /><br />I've noticed a lot of guests are less hesitant to get Botox at parties because it's not as scary and intimidating. A secretary from a major law firm hired me for a Botox party for five women. Three were prior recipients of Botox, one was new to it but super excited, and one was very apprehensive but didn't want to be the only one in the office who didn't show up.<br /><br />I was able to help the apprehensive guest move from a point of uncertainty to one of excitement because of my knowledge and the time I took to answer questions. Ultimately, she got the services and told a couple of friends. I ended up with four clients from her experience. <br /><br /><h2><strong>Botox parties can be a huge supplement to your income </strong></h2>The cost of a Botox party is based on the number of clients who want to be injected and the expectations of the host. I typically offer the host a promotional discount on their injections, but if the host wants me to do the party planning that's an additional cost. There are also fees if I have to travel — often to Miami, which is about 350 miles away from my home. The cost can range anywhere from $3,500 to $20,000. <br /><br />Doing Botox parties can be really fun and lucrative, depending on how you market yourself and how good your network is. Word-of-mouth has been my best marketing asset, but there's more competition in the field these days.  Because of safety guidelines, I didn't do Botox parties for a lot of the pandemic, but there was <a href="https://www.insider.com/florida-plastic-surgeon-dr-miami-drive-thru-botox-injections-2020-6?_gl=1*1m6vqwj*_ga*MjEzMjU3MDUxMS4xNjc0ODQzODc5*_ga_E21CV80ZCZ*MTY3NzcwMzMxNC41NC4xLjE2Nzc3MDM3NDguMC4wLjA.">an upsurge in requests</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-botox-maker-pharma-giant-allergans-in-house-ad-agency-2022-2">interest in Botox peaked</a> after the pandemic ended. <br /><br />The biggest challenge of working as both a hospitalist physician and doing Botox parties is the mental switch it requires. I'm very used to treating internal organs, but when I'm doing Botox parties in my spare time I have to focus on the skin.<br /><br />Moving forward, I plan to further expand my salon and spa business with Botox, PRP fillers, and other injectables.<br /><br /><b>Correction: March 7, 2023 </b><em>— This story was updated to clarify that Dr. Samantha Ellison completed a six-month fellowship in addition to her certification to do injections. </em><br /> <br /><br />

Inside Mark Zuckerberg's 1,380-acre oceanfront Kauaʻi estate

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="https://www.acast.com/howididit"></div><p></p></div></div>Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer always wanted to own a sports team.&#xa0;Ultimately, he bought the LA Clippers for $2 billion, out-bidding numerous other groups that wanted the NBA team, including Oprah and Oracle's Larry Ellison.<p>Ballmer revealed the negotiating tricks he used to beat out everyone else in&#xa0;<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/steve-ballmer-career-advice-from-clippers-owner-and-ex-microsoft-ceo-2017-7">Business Insider's podcast, "Success! How I Did It,"</a>&#xa0;They can be applied to most major deals, whether you're bidding on a house, or a sports team.</p><h3><strong>1. Do your research and&#xa0;learn the landscape.</strong></h3><p>One of the first things Ballmer&#xa0;did when he retired from Microsoft in 2014 was meet with the commissioners of the NBA and NFL.&#xa0;At first, no teams seemed to be on the market.</p><p><span>"It turned out the most difficult thing was actually figuring out how to get involved in the process," Ballmer said. "I had looked at the Milwaukee Bucks; they didn't want to sell to me. I had asked the commissioner who I should get to know. There was nothing that seemed like it was going to sell."</span></p><p>But soon, the LA Clippers became an option after tapes of then-owner Donald Sterling making racist comments became public. Ballmer was ready to pounce.</p><h3><strong>2. Find a mutual connection to introduce you to the seller</strong></h3><p>Ballmer had never met the Sterlings, but it dawned on him that he knew Disney CEO Michael Eisner, and the Eisners had a Clippers box right next to the Sterlings. He asked for an introduction, and was quickly given Shelly Sterling's contact information.&#xa0;</p><p><span>"[Eisner] called me on a Saturday morning, 7 o'clock," Ballmer said. "He says, 'Call Shelly Sterling right now at this number, she'll be available.'"</span></p><h3><strong>3. Make the seller get to know you so&#xa0;the deal feels more personal</strong></h3><p>Ballmer spent a day with Shelly Sterling and came prepared with a bank statement to prove he could afford the team. At first, she had no idea who Ballmer was. By the end, she liked him better than any of the other bidders, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/steve-ballmers-road-past-donald-sterling-to-nba-clippers-helm-1409020228">The Wall Street Journal reported </a>at the time of the Clippers sale.</p><p>Ballmer met with Shelly Sterling's lawyer that same evening to make sure he was prepared to bid&#xa0;a proper amount.</p><h3><strong>4. Make your bid as hassle-free as possible, and don't try to nickel and dime&#xa0;</strong></h3><p>Ballmer says the fact that he was a sole bidder for the team rather part of a group (like in Oprah's case) proved to be an advantage. Given the "legal wrangling" the Sterlings had&#xa0;to endure regarding the scandal,&#xa0;Sterling's lawyers thought Ballmer&#xa0;would be more likely to stick through the process as a&#xa0;stand-alone.</p><p>Additionally, Ballmer was upfront about how much he was willing to pay. He didn't want to drastically overpay, but he didn't want to nickel and dime the Sterlings either.</p><p>"<span>I had told them, 'This is what I'd like to pay, this is the maximum I'd pay and, oh by the way, you have to understand, I don't want to look stupid in front of my wife for being a guy who dramatically overpays,'" Ballmer said. One of those steps that I wanted to talk about more in depth is the Clippers. It was not easy for you to own the team and, like you said, you met with the commissioners and they were like, "Eh, there's not much available." Then all of a sudden, this Donald Sterling scandal happens where there was this tape of him coming out saying these racist things and he got eventually pushed out and there was this opportunity to buy the Clippers but you were not the only bidder. Oprah was interested and Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle was interested. What did you do to eventually be able to own the team? What were your negotiating tricks? I hear you buttered up Mrs. Sterling quite well. How did that work?</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Ballmer</strong>: Well, it turned out the most difficult thing was actually figuring out how to get involved in the process. I didn't know Shelly Sterling, nobody was quite sure who was selling the business. I was talking to the commissioner, but things were very vague because, while they had banned Donald, Shelly and Donald hadn't stepped up to agree to sell the business and then she eventually gets involved. There was no obvious banker to talk to, but I knew Michael Eisner from Disney for a number of years and a lightbulb went off.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">The Eisners have had season tickets to Clipper games for years, right next to the Sterlings. So Michael Eisner made an introduction for me to Shelly Sterling. He called me on a Saturday morning, 7 o'clock. He says, "Call Shelly Sterling right now at this number, she'll be available for your call." She said, "Well, what's your number?" Then she said, "Ah, it's OK, why don't you come see me?" So I went down, had a meeting with Shelly. I actually brought my brokerage statement, I never ended up showing her but a friend of mine had said, in some businesses, they want to see whether you can really afford the asset. I got through that without actually showing her the brokerage statement.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">And then I met with her lawyer again later that evening and the process was really to try to ensure that I bid an appropriate amount of money. What I learned later, the fact that I was a sole bidder was of importance because her lawyers knew she was going to go through a set of legal wrangling with her husband over this, and they wanted a buyer who they could count on to stay with them through the process and they were worried about groups of buyers being tougher to do that with.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">So I know there were at least three other bidders, two others who got bids in. There was a local Angeleno, there was a group that did include David Geffen and Oprah, and at least rumored, there was a group from the Mideast. I knew what my walkaway price was. I had actually told her lawyer, I wasn't a great negotiator. I had told them, "This is what I'd like to pay, this is the maximum I'd pay and, oh by the way, you have to understand, I don't want to look stupid in front of my wife for being a guy who dramatically overpays." But I, I laid it out there, I wasn't trying to be some tough, get the last 3%, 5% out of the deal, I just wanted to own the team.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Shontell</strong>: Of course.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Ballmer</strong>: And that was my negotiating approach. And then I had to hold on for the ride as the Sterlings went through their legal wrangling about whether Donald was competent to participate in the management of their trust.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Shontell</strong>: I remember that. And also, at the time, it sounded like you structured it like a venture-capital deal where you had a valuation on the team, and what you were willing to pay. No one had bought a team for $2 billion within the NBA before, but now it seems like you set the bar and other teams would be that valuable at this point.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Ballmer</strong>: Yeah, I think the thing people miss is in a business sense you'd say, it's not sort of a fluid market. Assets are limited, figuring out what the price is in that kind of calcified market is hard to do, and particularly in LA. LA and New York are different places. No matter what else is going on, buying land is more expensive in LA, and buying basketball teams is more expensive in LA. The baseball team the Dodgers had sold for about $2.1 billion, but they also had a lot of parking and they owned their stadium, so what was the right price for the basketball team? I wasn't the only one. </p><p id="92bb6858-bac6-4c7b-becd-34d9c3757d14">Scarlett Johansson, who voiced the AI Samantha in that movie, said last week that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/scarlett-johansson-angry-chatgpt-voice-declined-offer-openai-sam-altman-2024-5"><u>she had hired lawyers</u></a> after she heard GPT-4o using a voice that sounded "eerily similar" to her own. This was after Sam Altman tried to hire her to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/scarlett-johansson-angry-chatgpt-voice-declined-offer-openai-sam-altman-2024-5"><u>voice the AI bot, and she declined. </u></a></p><p id="92bb6858-bac6-4c7b-becd-34d9c3757d14">OpenAI paused the voice, saying a different actress was behind it, and that the voice was cast before Altman reached out to Johansson. That one of the AI voices sounds a great deal like a Hollywood star who declined to work with OpenAI is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-scarlett-johansson-voice-defense-sam-altman-washington-post-chatgpt-2024-5"><u>purely coincidental</u></a>. Neighborhoods have really dumb names these days

I'm Alexei Oreskovic, Business Insider's West Coast Bureau Chief and Global Tech Editor.</p><p>From Silicon Valley to Capitol Hill, it's been an incredibly busy few days of news. And just as the impeachment process in Washington is sure to unfold in dramatic fashion over the coming weeks and months, so too will several important tech industry storylines that are underway.</p><h3>This week: It's shake-up season for tech CEOs</h3><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/adam-and-rebekah-neumanns-ties-to-jared-kushner-and-ivanka-trump-2019-9">Adam Neumann</a>, WeWork's tequila-loving, long-haired surfer CEO agreed to step down on Tuesday <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meet-weworks-board-of-directors-thatll-advise-ceo-adam-neumann-2019-9">under pressure from the board</a>. Neumann will remain chairman of WeWork, but the chief executive reins will pass to a pair of tech industry old hands who will run the company as co-CEOs in a presumably more staid (read: boring) manner.</p><p>What WeWork didn't address however, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wework-has-6-billion-incentive-to-complete-ipo-this-year-2019-9">is the timing for its beleaguered IPO </a>- if, by this point, there is to be an IPO at all.</p><p>As Troy Wolverton writes, even with the company unburdened of Neumann's reputational baggage, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wework-faces-few-barriers-to-ipo-despite-its-ceo-shakeup-2019-9">WeWork's biggest obstacle to an IPO</a> remains the one it's had to contend with since making its offering paperwork public in August: investor demand.</p><p><strong><em><a href="http://newsletter.businessinsider.com/join/4np/trending">If you're not yet a subscriber to Trending, BI Prime's tech newsletter, you can sign up here.</a></em></strong></p><p>WeWork could still go public this year, despite a challenging calendar. Even Box and its affable founder-CEO Aaron Levie <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/box-starboard-value-acquisition-undervalued-2019-9">are under siege by activist investors.</a> And then there's Oracle, which announced earlier this month that co-CEO Mark Hurd was stepping away for an unspecified medical leave.</p><p>Check out Julie Bort's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/larry-ellison-oracle-board-candidates-next-ceo-2019-9">reporting on who's in line to replace Hurd at Oracle.</a> Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison has a short list of 5 internal candidates that he's promised to give the board.</p><p>Interestingly, Oracle intends to stick with the dual CEO structure, Bort notes. Why does Oracle need two CEOs? Safra Catz, the other co-CEO has previously said she doesn't want the sole CEO job and that she plans to retire when the 75-year-old Ellison retires - <em>if</em> he ever retires.</p><p>More importantly, as Ellison himself said last week <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/oracle-customers-partners-larry-ellison-amazon-web-services-fight-2019-9">at the company's annual conference</a>:<br /><br />"I believe in a dual CEO structure. The normal case [at Oracle] would be dual CEO here for obvious reasons. That it's good to have capacity and good to have specialization. And then, God forbid, if something untoward should happen, you have capacity, you are not incapacitated."</p><p>No matter how many CEOs Oracle has, Ellison ultimately calls the shots. Tech CEOs are slipping and sliding, and WeWork's fireworks are just the start

President &amp; CEO  Marissa Mayer.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>There are a limited range of hairstyles considered "professional" in the workplace - especially for women.</strong></li><li><strong>For example, the majority of women leaders are blonde, and the majority of female news anchors have short- to medium-length straight hair.</strong></li><li><strong>People's associations of hairstyles with being professional (or not) are likely linked to stereotypes around gender and race.</strong></li><li><strong>Fortunately, there's evidence that the definition of a professional hairstyle is expanding.</strong></li></ul><p><br />Mary Lou Andre, a <a href="http://www.dressingwell.com/about/team/79-dressing-well-home/about/105-mary-lou">corporate image consultant</a>, recently worked with a woman who was considered a "rockstar" at her financial-services company. The woman had been tapped to act as a spokesperson for her organization - but when Andre watched the recording of her first TV appearance, she grew concerned.</p><p>The woman wore heavy makeup and a high ponytail that was "flipping around" while she spoke. "It really came across as young, inexperienced, not quite as knowledgeable as she was," Andre told Business Insider. "It was so distracting."</p><p>Andre, who is the founder and president of Organization By Design, coached the woman to tone down the makeup, trim her hair, and put the ponytail at the base of her neck. The next time the woman appeared on TV (she'd also received speech coaching), Andre said, she seemed like a "different person," like more of an expert.</p><p>In an ideal workplace, we'd judge people by their performance, and by the value they bring to the company. But the modern workplace is hardly ideal, and the reality is that people almost always take appearance into account - even subconsciously - when they evaluate someone's suitability for a particular job.</p><p>As <a href="http://www.ucdenver.edu/academics/colleges/business/about/Faculty-Research/FacultyDirectory/Pages/Traci-Sitzmann.aspx">Traci Sitzmann</a>, an associate professor of management at the University of Colorado Denver Business School, put it to Business Insider, "if you look the part, it increases the chances that you're going to get the part."</p><h2>Most female news anchors have a similar hairstyle</h2><p>Broadcast journalism is a prime example of this phenomenon. A <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/14680777.2017.1415950">recent study</a> led by Mary Angela Bock at the University of Texas at Austin, cited in <a href="https://www.instyle.com/hair/secret-beauty-rules-of-television-talking-heads">InStyle</a>, looked at more than 400 publicity images for local broadcast journalists and found that most of the female reporters and anchors had similar hairstyles.</p><p>Results showed that 98.5% had smooth hair; about two-thirds had short or medium-length hair; and about half were blonde. And as for men? Six were losing their hair.</p><p>The ideal look for women, the study authors wrote, "is stereotypically heteronormative, not overly sexy, and predictable."</p><p>To be sure, other industries beyond broadcast journalism place a premium on employees - especially those in leadership positions - looking the part. It's what Andre called an "ugly fact of life": Your appearance matters at work. "People are sizing you up, and sizing you down," she said.</p><h2>Hairstyle associations are likely linked to gender and racial stereotypes</h2><p>The association of smooth, straight hair with looking "professional" is likely influenced by both gender and racial stereotypes.</p><p>An <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2017/02/06/512943035/new-evidence-shows-theres-still-bias-against-black-natural-hair">NPR article</a> highlighted the "<a href="https://perception.org/goodhair/">Good Hair Study</a>," conducted by Perception Institute, which reported that most people display some bias towards women of color based on their hair. White women in particular rated textured hair as "less beautiful," "less sexy/attractive," and "less professional" than smooth hair.</p><p>What's more, the study found, black women experience more anxiety around hair issues and spend more time on their hair than their white counterparts.</p><p>Research presented at an Academy of Management meeting in 2016, by professors at the University of British Columbia's Sauder School of Business, found that <a href="http://jberdahl.blogspot.com/2016/02/women-leaders-unnaturally-blonde.html">many women</a> in leadership positions <a href="https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/blonde-leaders-sexism_us_57bdd4f5e4b00c67eca12176">are blonde</a>. Among female CEOs of S&amp;P 500 companies (admittedly a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fortune-500-companies-women-ceos-2018-8">small sample size</a>), that number is 48%. But only 2% of male CEOs in the S&amp;P 500 are blonde, according to a <a href="https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/blonde-leaders-sexism_us_57bdd4f5e4b00c67eca12176">previous study</a>.</p><p>The UBC researchers explained in the presentation that blonde women leaders may come across as warmer and more attractive - and therefore more socially acceptable - than brunettes.</p><h2>Facial hair can communicate confidence - or it can be inappropriate</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Oracle</span></p><p class="caption">Oracle executive chairman Larry Ellison.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Facial hair in the workplace presents its own set of challenges.</p><p>A 2014 <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/14/business/international/facial-hair-style-executives.html">New York Times</a> article reports that "facial hair is back in style in business settings" - but those who sport it have to learn to get the look just right. The appropriateness of facial hair, The Times reported, depends on factors including your age and your industry.</p><p>The Times cited the example of Larry Ellison, the 74-year-old founder of Oracle, who typically has a beard and/or mustache. One personal brand and style strategist told The Times that he worries the Ellison look "could be perceived as being abrasive to some."</p><p>Andre said she recently met a bearded man who was an executive in a conservative field. He was "impeccably groomed," she said: The beard communicated confidence, and that "he knows how to take risks." Indeed, <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0191886908001748">a study</a> published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences found that the more facial hair a man has, the more mature and more dominant he seems - at least as perceived by female undergrads.</p><p>Still, in some cases, Andre said of men with beards, "the whole look is wrong."</p><h2>The workplace may be more accepting of different types of hair than it has been in the past</h2><p>It's unclear what a single individual can do if they feel they're not being taken seriously at work because of their hairstyle.</p><p>Sitzmann, the University of Colorado Denver professor, co-authored <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0749597814000715">a study</a> that found simply acknowledging that your appearance is atypical for that company, but that you can do the job anyway, can help the hiring manager overcome their stereotypes. Still, Sitzmann pointed out, this strategy has only been tested in the lab, so it's unclear whether it would work in a real job interview.</p><p>There's also evidence that the tide may be turning when it comes to the definition of "appropriate" hair in the workplace. More people are choosing to leave their hair in its natural state, as evidenced by the <a href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/lifestyle/2014/05/28/chemical-free-black-hair-not-simply-trend/kLVdugv5MChUejSkDXoO3J/story.html">decline in sales</a> of hair relaxer.</p><p>Meanwhile, reporters and consultants told InStyle that they've seen more black women wearing natural hair on air recently.
