Mulayam Singh Yadav was 82 and had been on life support system since the past one week. He was admitted to the <keyword id="488355" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="medanta-hospital" source="Orion">Medanta hospital</keyword> in Gurugram on August 22. According to hospital sources, he breathed his last at 8.15 a.m. on Monday. The 82-year-old Samajwadi Party patriarch was facing difficulty in breathing and was under the supervision of an internal medicine expert at the Medanta Hospital, as per sources. Singh was suffering from a urinary infection as well, hospital sources had said. On Sunday, Medanta Hospital had put out a health bulletin stating that the veteran leader's condition was quite critical and that he was on life-saving drugs.

Four out of five elections in the bag ⁠— the first incumbent party in <keyword id="6357713" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uttar-pradesh" source="Orion">Uttar Pradesh</keyword> to win the state in 37 years ⁠— is enough for a delirious party (celebration). The Bharatiya Janata Party (<keyword id="14666" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bjp" source="Orion">BJP</keyword>) is not a new party, but it’s the only one that seems to have the strongest organisation among all political parties. But money and power may just be two of the ingredients that make it so effective. The result of the latest election in Uttar Pradesh (UP) has reinforced one fact about the state’s changing politics: identity politics, as we’ve come to know it, is passe. <div type="image" title="UP election results" msid="90135835" hostid="261"></div> The wave of anti-establishment leaders, who emerged in North India in the 1980s, saw India as a mishmash of several identities, based on religion, caste, language and so on, saw an opportunity in becoming individual power centres by representing one or more of these factions promising them clout along with affirmative action. Their fiefdoms seemed to have broken by the Narendra Modi wave in 2014 and haven't recovered since then. It’s not because those identities have suddenly dissolved into a larger national, or even a state level, group. Both caste-based oppression and religious discrimination is alive and well. The <keyword id="6354265" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="samajwadi-party" source="Orion">Samajwadi Party</keyword> gained a lot by tapping into the fear of persecution among Muslims this time and won the best ever-vote share in the party’s history. <div type="image" title="SP won back the vote share in Muslim dominated constituencies" msid="90135994" hostid="261"></div> However, on a larger scale, the issue hasn’t won them the election. It just seems like people don’t expect politicians to resolve these issues. After decades of broken promises, people don’t seem to be looking for anti-dynasty messiahs who, eventually, initiate their own dynasty. People want to hear something new from the challengers. So, parties fell back on the tried and tested issues like unemployment and inflation. But that hasn’t worked in UP either. <div type="image" title="Assembly Elections 2022" msid="90135864" hostid="261"></div> It’s not like there were no chinks in the BJP armour. Even what the government could do on its own, it hasn’t. Over 10 million young people who applied for a Railways recruitment exam have not received the results in over 2 years. A teacher eligibility test to be held by the government became a controversy after it <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/till-when-varun-gandhi-raises-unemployment-issue-in-latest-criticism-aimed-at-centre-up-govt-101638421572885.html">got cancelled just before the elections</a>. But these things have happened in UP even when the BJP was not in power. The fact is even in the Modi or <keyword id="43254" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="yogi-adityanath" source="Orion">Yogi Adityanath</keyword> era, UP has seen massive job losses, partly due to the pandemic. But they were able to offer some tangible solutions too: additional work for the unskilled, under the rural employment guarantee scheme (<a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/economy-policy/71-mgnrega-wages-not-paid-on-time-14-delayed-beyond-30-days-study-shows-121102901592_1.html">as flawed as it may be</a>), and free food for the poor. Essentially, BJP leaders and supporters can say <a href="https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1474456355163488268?t=Y7LhxIvK7syYZNglPJEdcQ&amp;s=19">any abhorrent thing</a> against religious minorities ⁠— Modi and other icons can continue to condone or ignore it ⁠— as long as the policies themselves aren’t discriminatory. Simply put, for example, as long as no one is denied free ration because of their religion or caste, the people are able to ignore the rhetoric. Does that mean that the BJP will remain in power forever? No. But the alternative has to be a new face, a new outfit that captures the imagination of the Indian youth in a way that existing leaders don’t. The Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) sweeping win in Punjab is proof of exactly that. AAP is a 7-year old political upstart that has become a credible political alternative in Delhi and Punjab, and broken ground in <keyword id="826" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="goa" source="Orion">Goa</keyword>. What works for it is Kejriwal’s crafty cocktail of welfare politics, anti-establishment posturing with a healthy dose of religious flattery. <div type="image" title="Punjab Election Results" msid="90136060" hostid="261"></div> In fact, it may even seem like what the voter wants isn’t exactly a new idea, but s/he surely doesn’t want to hear it from the same old flock of career/dynastic politicians. Even now, BJP has serious challengers in many states but none of them have any traction beyond their home states. Mamata Banerjee’s attempt to seek votes for Akhilesh Yadav in Uttar Pradesh hasn’t yielded much. Even the idea of a coalition of regional parties ⁠— from Arvind Kejriwal to MK Stalin, from Mamata Banerjee to Pinarayi Vijayan, from Jagan Reddy to Ashok Gehlot ⁠— taking on Modi seems jaded, if not flimsy. The way people vote for a state election is different from how they vote for the Parliament. This was the best chance for opposition to show some might and they’ve lost it. The opposition needs a new face to change the face of the government.

When asked about the manner in which the party carried out booth management, especially in view of the massive campaign launched by Samajwadi Party, perceived adverse impact due to farmers' agitation and the opposition by Brahmin voters, he said, "It is necessary to talk about your good work, the welfare schemes to the beneficiaries. And for it, we need the organisational cadre." BJP set to return in UP with 'handsome win aided with pro-incumbency'

<ul><li>There are three clear sides in the ongoing electoral race in India for the Lok Sabha. </li><li>However, in the case of a fractured mandate a bunch of regional parties will play a key role in deciding the country’s next Prime Minister. </li><li>Regional satraps, from 3 states with 86 out of 543 Lok Sabha seats in all, will have an outsized say in government formation. </li></ul> The polls are all but coming to a close, but party machinations are very much at hand. Ahead of the last phase of polling, Rashtriya Janata Dal <a href="https://www.bbc.com/hindi/amp/india-48275180?__twitter_impression=true">(RJD) has alleged</a> that Nitish Kumar, the current Chief Minister of Bihar and leader of the Janata Dal (United), will do a backward flip-- and break away from its alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The basis of this speculation comes from JD(U)’s party secretary, K C Tyagi’s statement seeking special status for the state,which is one of Modi’s undelivered promises from 2014. While striking a dissonant chord with ally BJP, JD(U)’s Tyagi has also tried to woo rivals in Odisha ( Biju Janata Dal’s (BJD) Naveen Patnai), and in Andhra Pradesh (YSR Congress’s Jaganmohan Reddy and his immediate rival <keyword id="83019" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telugu-Desam-Party">Telugu Desam Party</keyword>’s (TDP) Chandrababu Naidu), who have similar demands from the centre. A motley crew of regional satraps ahead of the last phase of polling may be a crucial political manoeuvre. On May 19, 60 seats in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh are going to the polls. The Kingmakers Apart from its traditional rival, the Congress Party-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA), the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is challenged by Mahgathbandhan or a Grand Alliance that includes 12 political parties. It is led by Mayawati of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), and <keyword id="6355031" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="akhilesh-yadav">Akhilesh Yadav</keyword> of <keyword id="6354265" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="samajwadi-party">Samajwadi Party</keyword> (SP), who were former foes turned friends; proving yet again politics makes strange bedfellows. These are the clear sides in the election so far and one of the leaders is likely to become the next Prime Minister. However, the BJD, the YSR Congress, its state rival TDP, and the Telegana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) led by K Chandrashekhar Rao who are yet to pick sides, will have fewer seats but an outsized say in deciding the winner of this Lok Sabha election, in the case of an utterly fractured mandate. The three states put together have 86 seats at stake in the Lok Sabha. Even half of those seats will wield significant power in case any of the other three national coalitions fail to cross the halfway mark. ‘Special’ unity The one factor binding four out of the five regional parties is the demand for ‘special status’ for their respective states. Special status is given to states with historic disadvantages be it geographic issues like tough terrains or unviable state finances. It provides them with autonomy like the ability to establish development boards, and decide on reservations. Special status has also been the bone of contention between BJP and TDP. TDP head Chandrababu Naidu broke away from the NDA, after BJP refused the status, as Naidu re-builds the state after Telangana split from AP. What is bringing these parties together is a recent comment from the union finance minister and BJP leader Arun Jaitley that categorically dismissed the demand for <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/business/2019/apr/04/arun-jaitley-against-special-status-special-financial-packages-for-states-1960238.html">special status for AP</a>, saying the ‘time for seeking special status is over’. While JD(U) has denied any attempt to break away from the NDA, it has enough common ground with the other four parties that can influence government formation. This may be the prelude to hectic parleys after the results on May 23.

A handful of small parties will play a key role in picking India’s next Prime Minister

 As per various reports, the Ramayana museum in Ayodhya will cost Rs 154 crore and will be a part of the <keyword id="980432" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ramayana-circuit">Ramayana Circuit</keyword> for which the Modi government has sanctioned Rs 225 crore, with Rs 151 crore exclusively for Ayodhya, which is the hub of the circuit. 
 
The move to build a museum also comes after the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=supreme+court&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Supreme Court</a> advised an out of court settlement for Ayodhya Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute. 
 
The Modi government had increased the Ramayana museum grant from Rs. 175 crore to Rs. 225 crore so that a state of the art museum can come up in the ancient town celebrated in Hindu epics as the seat of Lord Rama’s birthplace and kingdom. 
Sources told Times Now the formalities will be completed within the next seven to ten days. 
 
The Government is planning to complete the construction of the Ramayana museum within 18 months. 
 The decision to build the museum had triggered a fierce political battle then, with the <keyword id="6354265" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="samajwadi-party">Samajwadi Party</keyword> simultaneously announcing that it will construct a Ramlila Park in Ayodhya.

The Congress is showing a comeback in Punjab after almost a decade, fighting neck and neck in Goa and performing decently in Uttarakhand, despite a bunch of defections. 
 
Electoral alliance with the SP in Uttar Pradesh benefitted it, but ended up marring SP's performance. 
 
In Manipur, meanwhile, the BJP made impressive gains, but the exit polls show the Congress managed to fight back some as the battle is still neck and neck. 
 
 
As for AAP, in Punjab, it has gone from non-existent in 2012 to between 60-70 seats according to exit polls. 
 
As per exit polls, the Congress or AAP will take Punjab, the BJP is leading - by a lot - in Uttar Pradesh, and the BJP or the Congress will take Goa, Uttarakhand and Manipur. 
 
Pretty impressive showing by the BJP which didn't project chief ministerial candidates in any of the states it contested - except for maybe in Goa. 
 
Exit poll results 
Uttar Pradesh is staring at the prospect of a hung Assembly, as most exit polls predict huge gains here for the BJP but not an outright majority needed to form the government. 
 
In Punjab, the race between the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is too close to call. 
 
Three exit polls give the BJP a clear majority in the 70-member Uttarakhand assembly. 
 
The CVoter survey predicted that the BJP will emerge as the largest single party in Manipur, dethroning the Congress for the first time in 15 years. On the other hand, the Axis exit poll gives Congress the lead in the state, with a cautious prediction that it will remain in power. 
 
The CVoter exit poll predicts a close-fought battle between the Congress and the BJP to gain control of Goa, with both parties unlikely to gain a clear majority in the 40-member state assembly.

Notably, Times Now's exit poll gives the BJP a sharp edge, saying it will win between 190 and 210 seats in Uttar Pradesh; 201 seats will obviously give the BJP a majority. Times Now expects the SP-Congress alliance to win between 110 and 130 seats, while the BSP may get anywhere between 54 and 74 seats, it says. 
 
VMR's exit poll predicts as many as 200 seats for the BJP, 120 for the SP-Congress alliance and 64 for the BSP.
