Mulayam Singh Yadav was 82 and had been on life support system since the past one week. He was admitted to the <keyword id="488355" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="medanta-hospital" source="Orion">Medanta hospital</keyword> in Gurugram on August 22. According to hospital sources, he breathed his last at 8.15 a.m. on Monday. The 82-year-old Samajwadi Party patriarch was facing difficulty in breathing and was under the supervision of an internal medicine expert at the Medanta Hospital, as per sources. Singh was suffering from a urinary infection as well, hospital sources had said. On Sunday, Medanta Hospital had put out a health bulletin stating that the veteran leader's condition was quite critical and that he was on life-saving drugs.

His surprising remarks right when exit poll predicted BJP could win with majority in the state. While some of the survey predicted BJP emerging as the single largest party in UP, other gave them a clean majority. 
 Despite <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> alliance with the ruling Samajwadi Party, the alliance seems to have failed in gaining desirable results. 
 
Notably, Times Now's exit poll gives the BJP a sharp edge, saying it will win between 190 and 210 seats in Uttar Pradesh; 201 seats will obviously give the BJP a majority. Times Now expects the SP-Congress alliance to win between 110 and 130 seats, while the BSP may get anywhere between 54 and 74 seats, it says. 
 
VMR's exit poll predicts as many as 200 seats for the BJP, 120 for the SP-Congress alliance and 64 for the BSP.

The election dates are out and poll bugle has been sounded. All the parties such as <keyword id="6354265" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="samajwadi-party">Samajwadi Party</keyword>, Bahujan <keyword id="164879" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samaj-Party">Samaj Party</keyword>, the Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress have been holding massive rallies to woo voters. 
 As the poll dates were announced, several experts projected heavy victory for the BJP in UP. The poll conducted by India Today from October to December has projected that the BJP will win assembly elections in crucial states, banking on Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>'s demonetisation. 
 
Demonetisation was announced in mid of the survey period. 
 
According to the survey, BJP's vote share increased from 31% in October to 33% in December. In terms of seats, it highlights that 206-216 seats for the party in the 403-member UP assembly. 
 
It also highlighted that Samajwadi Party is likely to emerge as the second largest party with a vote share of 26%. 
 
Bahujan Samaj Party is neck-and-neck with SP in terms of vote share, and is projected to win 79-85 seats. This shows that despite repeated reminders of Mayawati asking Muslim voters to shun SP, it has had little impact as the community remains loyal to the SP even as party remains a divided house. 
 
According to the report, Congress continues to struggle in the state as party is projected to win barely 5-9 seats with only 6%vote share in the state. 
 
The other parties in the state - Rashtriya Lok Dal, Apna Dal, the Left and others - might win 7-11 seats.

Opinion polls project clear majority for BJP in UP, other crucial states

However, he went on to join the Congress in April 2019, while his wife, <keyword id="28668" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Poonam-Sinha">Poonam Sinha</keyword>, joined the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh. Poonam Sinha is pitted against another central minister, Rajnath Singh, in Lucknow and she is trailing too.

"<keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword>'s welfare schemes, Yogiji's tight grip on administration, and party's organisation have done their best. I am sure, we are set for a handsome win and on the way to create history," Pathak told IANS on the sidelines of the counting of votes going on since 8 a.m. Pathak also said the party organisation carried out outreach programmes over the last one year in the run up to the polls, including '100 days 100 programmes' talking about the government's welfare schemes for poor to relevant sections of the society and in general preparing a favourable atmosphere for the party. When asked about the manner in which the party carried out booth management, especially in view of the massive campaign launched by Samajwadi Party, perceived adverse impact due to farmers' agitation and the opposition by Brahmin voters, he said, "It is necessary to talk about your good work, the welfare schemes to the beneficiaries. And for it, we need the organisational cadre." The <keyword id="43771" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Exit-polls">exit polls</keyword> conducted by various news channels have unanimously projected that NDA will get the magical figure of 272 or at least be in striking distance of forming the next government. 
 The exit polls also indicate that the <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> is all set to come up with its best ever performance. In contrast, the <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> is headed towards its worst ever performance, with its total number of seats projected to be in the range of 100, as per the exit polls. 
 Four channels – <keyword id="2238539" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="NewsX">NewsX</keyword>, <keyword id="211456" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="India-TV">India TV</keyword>, <keyword id="1739243" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="ABP-News">ABP News</keyword> and <keyword id="60050" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="CNN-IBN">CNN-IBN</keyword> – have projected comfortable majority for the NDA. NewsX and India TV have projected 289 seats for the NDA while ABP News estimated that the NDA would capture 281 seats. However, Times Now was the most conservative in its projections, giving the NDA 249-265 <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> seats, while CNN-IBN gave it 279-282 seats. 
 
Hindi news channel News24 gave NDA a thumping majority and predicted it to bag 340 seats. On the other hand, Aaj Tak predicted the NDA figures in the range of 261-283. Even if the party gets 261, getting the support of 11 more MPs should not be too difficult, given the fact that the AIADMK chief Jayalalitha is said to be close to Narendra Modi and has extended her support to the coalition in the past during the tenure of the Vajpayee government. 
 
Most of the exit polls showed the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) getting between 101 and 148 seats. NewsX gave the UPA 101 seats, India TV 107 seats, ABP News 97 and CNN-IBN 92-102. 
 
‘Others’, including regional parties like the Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samajwadi Party, JD (U) and the Left Front, are estimated to get between 146 and 156 seats. 
 
The exit polls also forecast that the BJP would not be able to open its account in the southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. However, in the North, the Narendra Modi wave is projected to sweep away regional identity-based heavyweights like the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party in Uttar Pradesh, and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in Bihar. 
 
The BJP is likely have the biggest gains in Uttar Pradesh where two surveys expect it to bag 54 seats, just three less than its all-time high of 57 in 1998. Similarly, the exit polls ruled out the possibility of RJD’s revival. 
 
The debutant Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is projected to get an average of only five seats, with a total vote share of about 4%.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief <keyword id="260213" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arvind-Kejriwal">Arvind Kejriwal</keyword> had spent about half-a-crore rupees during his election campaign against <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>, even though he claimed that his party was cash-strapped. 
 
According to the details submitted to the district administration, Congress candidate Ajay Rai spent Rs 54.45 lakh, Arvind Kejriwal spent Rs 50.10 lakh and Narendra Modi spent Rs 37.62 lakh. 
 
Varanasi’s Chief Treasury Officer Ramamurthy Dwivedi said that Samajwadi Party’s (SP) Kailash Chaurasiya spent Rs 24.54 lakh while Indira Tiwari of Trinamool Congress spent Rs 14.58 lakh. 
 
According to Varanasi officials, the BJP spent the most (Rs 9.41 lakh) on publicity material, such as handbills, pamphlets, posters, CDs and cassettes. 
 
Samajwadi Party put in Rs 13.20 lakh on publicity while Congress topped the publicity expenditure list, spending a whopping Rs 24.92 lakh on digital media channels, such as SMS, cable network, the Internet and social media. 
 
AAP’s Purvanchal zone convenor Sanjeev Singh claimed that the BJP’s actual expenditure was much higher. “They distributed lakhs of T-shirts and saffron gamchhas (towels) throughout Varanasi. There was unaccounted publicity material funded by corporate houses and then there was publicity material in disguise. The best examples are, perhaps, the huge hoardings for Gujarat Tourism in Varanasi,” he said.

The BJP had won 251 seats and was leading in 31 constituencies, making its total tally to 282 as per the latest update. The Congress had won only 41 and was leading in five, managing just a total of 46, as per the latest update. 
 <keyword id="41281" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="NDA">NDA</keyword>’s tally stood at 337 (lead+win), while <keyword id="6355364" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="UPA">UPA</keyword>’s tally stood at modest 59 (lead+win). 
 
Several Congress heavyweights – Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, PK Bansal, Kapil Sibbal, Sandeep Dikshit, Ajay Makan, Madhsudan Mistry, Sanjay Nirupam and Priya Dutt had to bite the dust. 
 
All the BJP-ruled states - Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh headed the BJP way. 
It remains to be seen what Modi does with this degree of political authority.
