<ul><li>For the financial year ending March 2023, the <keyword id="6359180" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sia" source="Orion">SIA</keyword> Group posted a record net profit of SGD 2,157 million (USD 1,598 million) for the year.</li><li>SIA's revenue rose 133.4 per cent or by SGD 10,160 million (USD 7,526 million) year-on-year to a record SGD 17,775 million (USD 13,167 million). </li></ul>Singapore, May 22 (ANI): Following consecutive quarters of standout financial results, many expected Singapore Airlines (SIA) to turn in a dazzling set of numbers last week when it announced its full-year results. Singapore's national carrier did not disappoint as it reported the highest annual profit in its 76-year history. <br /><br />For the financial year ending March 2023, the SIA Group posted a record net profit of SGD 2,157 million (USD 1,598 million) for the year, versus an SGD 962 million (USD713 million) net loss in the previous year, an earnings gain of SGD 3,119 million (USD 2,310 million).<br /><br />SIA's revenue rose 133.4 per cent or by SGD 10,160 million (USD 7,526 million) year-on-year to a record SGD 17,775 million (USD 13,167 million). Although capacity was ramped up by 94 per cent, it was outpaced by traffic which rose 449.9 per cent. This led passenger flown revenue to expand by SGD 10,560 million (or 376.3 per cent) to SGD 13,366 million. Revenue per available seat-kilometre (RASK) was 10 Singapore cents, the highest yearly RASK in the carrier's history.<br /><br />During the financial year under review, the two airlines in the SIA group, full-service Singapore Airlines and low-cost Scoot, together served a total of 26.5 million passengers, a six-fold increase from a year ago.<br /><br />With capacity at only 79 per cent of pre-COVID levels as of March 2023, there is still room for the airline to do better. It said that its capacity is projected to reach an average of around 83 per cent of pre-COVID levels in the first half of the current financial year.<br /><br />The outstanding results is mostly because of the way SIA responded to the crisis wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic on the airline industry.<br /><br />As borders closed, and airlines stopped flying, SIA with the support of shareholders and its lenders managed to raise over USD16 billion of cash to shore up its balance sheet. This enabled it to retain more than 80 per cent of its staff as well as keep most of its aircraft operational. Many regional competitors had to furlough or let staff go and sell aircraft and as a result, had a slower start once borders reopened again.<br /><br />During COVID, SIA redeployed cabin crew to other sectors including as "care ambassadors" in healthcare facilities and as "transport ambassadors" to help manage safe practices on public transport.<br /><br />The carrier also took the opportunity to upgrade some of its cabins and also merged regional carrier <keyword id="676010" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="silkair" source="Orion">Silkair</keyword> with its main full-carrier Singapore Airlines to save costs. Digital services were also upgraded and a lifestyle rewards app Kris+ was launched.<br /><br />As borders reported, SIA rapidly deployed services to meet the pent-up travel demand charging above-average fares as regional competitors played catch-up.<br /><br />At the moment, SIA is operating at over 80 per cent of its pre-COVID levels whereas the average passenger capacity of international scheduled services of Asia-Pacific airlines is at around 58 per cent.<br /><br />To prepare for the future, SIA is looking into several strategic initiatives including the continued expansion of its network through deeper collaboration with like-minded airlines. One of these initiatives is the proposed merger of <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword> and Vistara to strengthen SIA's presence in the fast-growing Indian aviation market.<br /><br />Through its ownership of Vistara and a further injection of USD 250 million in November last year, Singapore Airlines will be a 25.1 per cent owner of Air <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> once the merger is approved by the Indian authorities. <br /><br />When Tata Sons appointed Singapore Airlines (SIA) veteran <keyword id="5863894" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="campbell-wilson" source="Orion">Campbell Wilson</keyword> as chief executive officer in the middle of last year, it was probably with a view to trying to mirror the success of SIA at the newly acquired Air India.<br /><br />Wilson, a New Zealander, spent 25 years at SIA rotating through various roles including chief executive of Scoot, senior vice president of sales and marketing and worked for the airline in countries like Japan, Canada, and Hong Kong.<br /><br />If investments committed to the new Air India are an indication, Tata is on the right track to turning Air India around to become a more modern airline, with a better on-time record, better in-flight service, better cabin environment and an all-around better customer experience. <br /><br />The new owners have committed USD 70 billion to aircraft, USD 200 million to IT, and USD 400 million to refit the existing fleet. In February this year, it made the largest single order for new aircraft worldwide by buying 470 planes from both Boeing and Airbus.<br /><br />To support the growth, the airline has recruited thousands of staff, including 10 times the number of cabin crew and 10 times the number of pilots that would have been typically recruited each year.<br /><br />Following years of under-investment, and lack of recruitment and training, it has already made good progress in less than a year according to Wilson.<br /><br />Speaking to Australian aviation blogger <keyword id="8281779" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sam-chui" source="Orion">Sam Chui</keyword>, he said, "We've changed all the menus. We've replaced seats, curtains, carpets, and seat cushions. We've repaired a lot of the inflight entertainment systems, particularly in first and business class that weren't previously working. We are making good progress in economy class despite supply chain constraints."<br /><br />Recently, the carrier also attained the number one ranking for domestic punctuality for the first time in eight years and has consistently been amongst the top two or three in India.<br /><br />"The biggest challenge for us at the moment is simply the scale and pace of growth. It is a sizable airline. We carry over 100,000 people a day already," he added.<br /><br />Although the impact of the changes will only be felt over time, Air India's CEO is confident that the changes he has implemented will bear fruit and lead the airline back to being a premium global carrier eventually.<br /><br />CEO Wilson said, "Air India was in the 1960s, one of the best airlines in the world. It's got a long 90-year history. The past few years have been a bit challenging with under-investment. But now under the Tata group, which took ownership in January of 2022, there is a very significant effort to get Air India back to the heights it once was." Can Air India emulate Singapore Airlines' record profits?

<ul class="summary-list"><li>2023 has been a busy year in the field of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-job-artificial-intelligence-ai-chatgpt-bing-google-2023-2">artificial intelligence</a>. </li><li>People are increasingly using the technology in both business and personal settings</li></ul><p>2023 has been quite the year for artificial intelligence.</p><p>Take ChatGPT. Even though OpenAI launched the chatbot just last November, nearly one hundred million people are now using it each week, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/multiple-versions-of-openai-ceo-sam-altman-emerge-2023-12">CEO Sam Altman</a> said a year after the chatbot's release.</p><p>Speaking of Altman, how about the long weekend of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-ousted-fired-openai-ceo-chatgpt-maker-2023-11">his ousting — and reinstatement — as head of OpenAI</a>, which made him even more of a household name and kept tech watchers glued to the news?</p><p>AI evolution and adoption doesn't seem like it's going to slow down in 2024. The world is only at the beginning of a revolution — especially in the corporate world, according to Michael Chui, a McKinsey partner who leads research on the current state of generative AI.</p><p>While "change is hard," companies will continue to have to grapple with how to teach their employees AI skills and implement the technology responsibly, he told Business Insider.</p><p>Joshua Builta, a research director at Omdia, also pointed to challenges ahead. <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/chatgpt-ai-mistakes-hallucinates-wrong-answers-edge-computing-morgan-stanley-2023-2">AI can still spew out wrong answers</a>, and there appears to be a lack of talent needed to build language models, amongst other concerns, he said at this year's NYC AI Summit.</p><p>But before we ring in 2024 and all it may herald in the space, BI took a look back over some key points from the last year in AI.</p><h2>The leadership tussles at OpenAI</h2><p>In mid-November, things appeared to boil over at ChatGPT owner OpenAI. On a Friday, Sam Altman was ousted as CEO after the board agreed that it was no longer confident in his ability to continue leading the company, shocking the tech community. But in the following days, hundreds of OpenAI employees signed a letter <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-workers-threaten-to-quit-over-sam-altman-firing-2023-11">threatening to quit</a> unless the board stepped down and Altman was reinstated as CEO.</p><p>During that period, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-has-hired-former-openai-ceo-sam-altman-2023-11">Altman also got offered a role at Microsoft</a> — a large OpenAI stakeholder — leading the software giant's new AI department along with Greg Brockman, the president of OpenAI.</p><p>Then, on the following Tuesday and after much outrage in the business community, Altman returned to his position as CEO of OpenAI. A new board was also created following his return. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-did-openai-board-fire-sam-altman-interview-2023-11">Altman has been very tight-lipped</a> about the reasons behind the drama (though disagreements about <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-sam-altman-openai-drama-ai-silicon-valley-debate-spotlight-2023-12">the speed of AI development</a> may have factored into it), but one thing everyone can agree on: It was a very long five days for all involved.</p><h2>The AI chatbot wars heated up</h2><div type="image" title="Gemini and ChatGPT both displayed on phone screens" height="2250" width="3000" msid="106293220" hostid="261" sizebytes="70004"></div><p>OpenAI wasn't just contending with leadership upheaval: It's also faced a slew of rival chatbots.</p><p>In February, Microsoft unveiled its new Bing search engine with generative AI capabilities. That same week, Google announced its AI chatbot it calls <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-gemini-ai-model-release-ultra-pro-bard-openai-tpu-2023-12">Bard. That's now powered by Gemini</a>, the search engine's AI model that the company claims will be more powerful than OpenAI's GPT-4 model.</p><p>Then, in November, xAI, an AI company started by Elon Musk, launched Grok. The tech billionaire calls it the "anti-woke" alternative to ChatGPT. (<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-use-grok-elon-musk-ai-chatbot-2023-12">BI tested Grok, and it's… spicy</a>.)</p><h2>Money poured into the AI space…</h2><p>Microsoft kicked off 2023 by pushing an additional <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-shows-off-smaller-ai-models-after-openai-chaos-2023-12">$10 billion</a> into OpenAI. In September, Amazon said it'll invest <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-invests-4-billion-in-anthropic-2023-9">$4 billion into Anthropic</a>, another OpenAI rival. That same month, Ernst &amp; Young, unveiled plans to teach its 400,000 employees how to use AI in the workplace as part of its $1.4 billion investment in the field.</p><p>It's not just big companies trying to take part in the AI gold rush. Venture capital firms have placed eight-figure bets on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-most-promising-artificial-intelligence-startups-of-2023-2023-8">AI startups.</a></p><h2>…and companies spent big on AI talent…</h2><p>Tech titans like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hinge-meta-nvidia-amazon-walmart-offering-high-salaries-ai-jobs-2023-8">Meta, Amazon, and Netflix</a> have been hiring workers — some for as much as $900,000 a year — who can build AI models. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-jobs-pay-non-tech-companies-how-to-find-2023-7">Non-tech companies</a> in the legal, healthcare, and education sectors have also been looking to fill roles that seek experience using ChatGPT for six-figure salaries.</p><p>Generative AI is also creating new opportunities. Jobs like prompt engineer, chief AI officer, AI ethicist, generative AI strategist, and AI data trainer have emerged. There's also a cottage industry of new side hustles like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chatgpt-courses-instruction-academic-lucrative-side-hustle-2023-4">ChatGPT courses</a>, AI-content editing services, and AI-focused newsletters.</p><h2>…but we saw there's a very real human cost to AI development</h2><div type="image" title="A remote worker looking at his computer in a dark room" height="2880" width="5120" msid="106293223" hostid="261" sizebytes="170912"></div><p>Behind the impressive capabilities of some AI chatbots: contract labor.</p><p>In January, Time published an investigation detailing the brutal working conditions that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-kenyan-contract-workers-label-toxic-content-chatgpt-training-report-2023-1">Kenyan data labelers</a> faced when training ChatGPT to generate safe responses. Workers reported going through troves of potentially illegal content that includes child sexual abuse, bestiality, and rape for less than $2 an hour.</p><h2>Concerns about AI job replacement have grown</h2><div type="image" title="A robot kicks back with its feet on an office desk" height="5008" width="8500" msid="106293225" hostid="261" sizebytes="1768718"></div><p>Workers' fears of robots taking their jobs is nothing new, but the advent of ChatGPT has only deepened their concerns.</p><p>A Goldman Sachs report from March found that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/generative-ai-chatpgt-300-million-full-time-jobs-goldman-sachs-2023-3">generative AI could disrupt around 300 million full-time jobs</a>, especially in white-collar professions. ChatGPT can do things like develop code, generate marketing materials, create lesson plans, and write legal briefs. The potential for AI job replacement is, in part, why thousands of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hollywood-writers-strike-over-technology-ai-netflix-streaming-studios-2023-7">Hollywood writers went on strike</a> earlier this year.</p><p>But while some business leaders like Elon Musk predict that AI will create <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-predicts-ai-will-lead-to-future-no-jobs-2023-11">a world without jobs,</a> others believe that's a little far fetched. "AI won't take your job," economist Richard Baldwin said during a panel at the 2023 World Economic Forum's Growth Summit. "It's somebody using AI that will take your job." "</p><h2>And concern over how AI is used has also grown</h2><p>Ilya Sutskever, a cofounder of OpenAI, predicts that AI could create new problems like a rise in fake news and cyberattacks, automated AI weapons, and even "infinitely stable dictatorships."</p><p>Some bad actors are already using AI to deceive others for personal gain. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-voice-generator-phone-scam-imposter-crime-money-cash-2023-6">AI phone scams</a>, where would-be criminals use voice changers to impersonate peoples' loved ones in an attempt to steal money, have gotten more sophisticated. Spam bots have tried to scam some people into investing in fake cryptocurrencies.</p><p>And generative AI is blurring the line between fiction and reality. This year, some <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chatgpt-essays-college-cheating-professors-caught-students-ai-plagiarism-2023-1">college students were accused of plagiarism</a> after professors accused them of submitting essays they believed were AI-generated. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/universities-ditch-ai-detectors-over-fears-students-falsely-accused-cheating-2023-9">Content detectors</a> have been found to be unreliable.</p><p>False information has only become more rampant as a result of generative AI. NewsGuard, a site that tracks online misinformation, identified 614 unreliable AI-generated news websites as of December 18. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/what-is-deepfake#how-are-deepfakes-used?">Deepfakes</a>— AI-generated images, videos, and audio designed to be indistinguishable from the real world — now appear to be more convincing and harder to detect than ever before.</p><p>And as of July, major firms like Apple, Deutsche Bank, Amazon issued bans or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chatgpt-companies-issued-bans-restrictions-openai-ai-amazon-apple-2023-7">restrictions on using ChatGPT at work</a> due to data privacy concerns.</p><h2>That's prompting governments to seek to regulate AI</h2><p>In October, US President Joe Biden signed a new <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/white-house-advisor-catching-up-on-ai-biden-executive-order-2023-10">executive order</a> urging the most influential tech companies to be more transparent about how they're developing their AI.</p><p>Two months later, the European Union reached a provisional agreement on its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/eu-reaches-provisional-agreement-on-landmark-ai-act-a-global-first/articleshow/105854979.cms">AI Act</a>. Dubbed "the world's first rules on AI," it aims to establish legal guidelines around how companies can develop the technology to ensure that it's safe and environmentally sustainable.</p><p>The Brazilian government is also working on a policy to oversee AI risks.</p><h2>People are also using generative AI in their personal lives</h2><p>Curious users have flocked to ChatGPT to help them <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chatgpt-travel-itenerary-vacation-costa-rica-errors-logistics-advisors-2023-3">plan trips</a>, find an apartment, overcome learning challenges, and lose weight.</p><p>AI aficionados are even pushing to new extremes. Some have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/when-your-ai-says-she-loves-you-2023-10">fallen in love with AI chatbots</a>; others have used it to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/soulmate-users-mourn-death-ai-chatbots-2023-10">mourn the death of loved ones</a>. Earlier this year, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-is-coming-for-tinder-and-other-dating-apps-2023-8">Match Group</a>, the parent company behind popular dating apps like Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge, announced its plans to integrate AI to help singles flirt, land more dates, and eliminate ghosting.</p><h2>There was a rise in AI hardware</h2><div type="image" title="Humane's AI pin projects a blue image onto someone's hand during a demonstration." height="1015" width="1908" msid="106293228" hostid="261" sizebytes="48474"></div><p>Many tech aficionados expect new generative AI gadgets to be the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-devices-openai-next-apple-iphone-jony-ive-humane-meta-2023-10">iPhones of the AI era</a>.</p><p>In September, Meta launched its second version of its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-ray-ban-smart-glasses-gen-z-friends-review-photos-2023-11">Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses</a>, which the company says can livestream footage onto Facebook or Instagram. Owners of the shades can speak to Meta's conversational AI assistant using their voice.</p><p>Two months later, Humane.ai announced the waitlist for its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-pin-humane-keynote-video-features-price-order-2023-11">AI pin</a>. It's a wearable device the company claims can project text onto your hand, search through your phone using voice commands, and even calculate how many grams of protein are in a handful of almonds.</p><p>Plus, OpenAI's Altman is reportedly in talks with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chatgpt-head-iphone-designer-jony-ive-ai-device-openai-report-2023-9">Jony Ive</a>, the designer of the iPhone, to create an AI-powered device.</p><h2>And the world moved closer to achieving AGI — at least according to some leaders</h2><p>Artificial general intelligence is the ability for AI to perform complex cognitive tasks like the ability to make decisions without human intervention.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-ceo-jensen-huang-agi-ai-five-years-2023-11 ">Jensen Huang</a>, the cofounder and CEO of Nvidia, the chip giant helping power the AI revolution, says that AGI will be achieved in just five years. John Carmack, an ex-Meta exec, believes AGI will be reached by the 2030s and be worth trillions.</p><p>Still, hat doesn't mean AI will takeover the world. Instead, business leaders say that in the next decade, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-deepmind-cofounder-mustafa-suleyman-everyone-will-have-ai-assistant-2023-9">everyone will have AI assistants</a>, as well as access to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-could-mean-free-doctors-lawyers-openai-vinod-khosla-prediction-2023-12">free doctors and lawyers</a>.</p>

From Sam Altman's ousting as OpenAI's CEO to ChatGPT entering the workforce, here's a look at the year in AI 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>An airline founder faces a fine after allowing an influencer into the cockpit. </li><li>Influencer Sam Chui posted a selfie with Starlux Airlines founder Chang Kuo-wei on Instagram. </li></ul><p>The founder of a Taiwanese airline is facing a $2,000 fine after letting an influencer take a selfie in the cockpit, according to various reports including the <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/airline-influencer-plane-cockpit-fine-b2339684.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Independent</a> and local news outlets <a href="https://news.ltn.com.tw/news/life/breakingnews/4296795" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Liberty Times Net</a> and <a href="https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/4887551" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Taiwan News</a>. </p><p>Chang Kuo-wei, the chairman of luxury airline Starlux Airlines who is also a pilot, flew the company's first flight from Taipei to Los Angeles on April 26, Liberty Times Net reported. Kuo-wei invited <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CrgpgjISzYD/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">internet influencer Sam Chui</a> into the cockpit for a photo without first getting approval from the Civil Aviation Administration (CAA).</p><p>Chui, who operates an aviation experience YouTube channel with over three million subscribers, posted the photo with Kuo-wei on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CrgpgjISzYD/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Instagram</a> saying: "What a great inaugural flight of @starluxairlines from Taipei to Los Angeles. Not everyday the chairman of an airline flies his passengers personally!" </p><p>The post currently has over 20,000 likes. Chui was among other influencers and members of the press invited on board to experience the flight, per the Independent. </p><p>Regulators deemed Kuo-wei's actions as violating Taiwan's Aircraft Flight Operation Regulations, which <a href="https://law.moj.gov.tw/ENG/LawClass/LawAll.aspx?pcode=K0090041" target="_blank" rel="noopener">say</a>: "No person may be admitted into the flight crew compartment of an aircraft except for the authorized personnel and Flight Dispatchers of the operator."</p><p>The CAA is now investigating the situation and Kuo-wei was summoned for questioning, per Taiwan News. </p><p>Insider reached out to the CAA and Starlux Airlines but did not immediately hear back. </p><p>Kuo-wei could be issued with a warning or fined the equivalent of around US $2,000 if he is found in breach of violations, per Liberty Times Net.</p><p>Kuo-wei recently <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airline-founder-flew-airport-apologize-delayed-passengers-starlux-2023-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">flew to Tokyo Narita Airport in Japan</a> to personally apologize to passengers the morning after a Starlux flight was canceled. The flight, which was supposed to depart on May 6 at 3:45 p.m. was delayed for hours then cancelled and passengers had to sleep at the airport overnight. </p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://samchui.com/2017/11/14/inside-worlds-private-dreamliner-bbj-b787/#.WhVh4rTQrm2">Sam Chui</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>Allen &amp; Co's exclusive business conference for tech, finance and media moguls is about to kick off next week in Sun Valley, Idaho.</strong></li><li><strong>It's a badge of honor just to be invited.</strong></li><li><strong>For those that made the grade and scored an invite, hobnobbing at the conference means one pretty specific: flying private.</strong></li><li><strong>There are so many private jets, one operator described the scene as "chaotic."<br /></strong></li></ul><p><br />The mogul event of the season will take place next week as the rich and powerful in the tech, media and finance worlds descend on Sun Valley, Idaho, for the Allen &amp; Co.'s secretive annual conference.</p><p>This year's attendee list includes Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon's Jeff Bezos, GM's Mary Barra, Slack's Stewart Butterfield, Apple's Tim Cook, Walt Disney's Bob Iger and Rupert Murdoch and his sons, to name a few <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2018/06/charlie-rose-allen-and-co-sun-valley-guest-list">according to Vanity Fair</a>. Both Shari Redstone and Leslie Moonves are invited, which will be interesting as the two are still locked in battle for control for CBS. Most controversial, perhaps, is that disgraced broadcast journalist Charlie Rose has scored an invitation, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-06-01/moguls-converging-on-sun-valley-could-be-in-for-awkward-moments">reports Bloomberg.</a></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psfG0-PnwRA">YouTube/Octaviation100</a></span></p><p class="caption">A jet at Friedman Memorial Airport in Sun Valley</p></div><p></p></div></div>Attendance is by invitation only so it is considered a badge of honor just to be asked.</p><p>And in order to impress your fellow elite moguls, one simply doesn't travel by commercial airline.</p><p>Private jets are considered the ultimate symbol of success in tech these days, as essential to the image as a devil-may-care pair of jeans, a $400 pair of sneakers and hoodie or a vest (the standard Allen &amp; Co mogul uniform).</p><p>And so, even though there are plenty of daily flights from, say, San Francisco to Sun Valley, bookings for private charters for the show are through the roof this year, one of them tells Business Insider.</p><p>The fixed-based operator in Sun Valley, Atlantic Aviation, expects 350 to 465 private jets this year, private-jet charter company XOJET tells Business Insider. An FBO is responsible for things like fueling airplanes. Parking of private jets is always a problem for this conference because the area is set up for about 100 of them, XOJET tells us.</p><p>Those that don't have their own jets have chartered.</p><p>"We are seeing a large increase in volume as compared to previous years; currently up over 30% on inbound flights and over 60% on outbound flights and we expect this number to grow as we tend to see last-minute bookings," Gregg Slow, chief client officer of XOJET, told Business Insider.</p><p>The influx of everyone's jet can be "chaotic," Slow says, telling us: "We will continue to have members of our team on the ground to assist our clients and crews as it can get a bit chaotic with multiple aircraft arriving and departing at the same time."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty / Drew Angerer</span></p><p class="caption">Drew Houston in Sun Valley in 2017.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Residents in Sun Valley say they always know when the secretive conference is going on because private jets are double-parked at Friedman Memorial Airport, reports Mark Dee of the <a href="https://www.mtexpress.com/news/sun_valley/hear-that-hush-allen-co-returns-to-sun-valley/article_f9c68760-80a1-11e8-9d05-db1273719e2f.html">Idaho Mountain Express local newspaper.</a></p><p>The only big name attendee that likely won't be flying his own plane is Warren Buffett.</p><p>Warren famously owns his own plane named "the Indefensible" because the notoriously frugal Buffett used to criticize corporations for buying private planes for their execs' use. He also owns NetJets, which lets people share ownership of planes.
