Not only did Lala mercilessly beat up her tormentor but also warned everyone against ill-treating his ‘rakhi sister’. After that, her rise to the top was meteoric as she developed contacts with police and other key people with power. During her reign, the red-light area was one of the most prosperous lanes as it had rich and powerful clients not to mention a steady stream of earnings from the underworld. So much so that Gangu would often wear sarees with golden borders and blouses with golden buttons. ‘Will you make me Mrs Nehru?’ Gangubai evoked so much awe that she became a rare woman to have her statue bust erected in the area. She also advocated the cause of her kind in the society. The plucky woman once took the stage at a woman empowerment summit amidst social workers and NGOs to advocate the need for prostitution belts in cities. Her speech was so widely reported that it won an audience with the Prime Minister. Jawaharlal Nehru was so impressed by her proposal to protect the red-light area that he asked why she ended up in this business when she could have found a nice husband. To this, she quickly asked him if he would marry her. Gangubai Kathiawadi tops technical awards at 23rd IIFA's music-loaded opening

Actor <keyword id="1623055" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sooraj-pancholi" source="Orion">Sooraj Pancholi</keyword> shook off the controversy clouding his life and career on Friday with a special <keyword id="6354572" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cbi" source="Orion">CBI</keyword> court acquitting him in the 2013 <keyword id="6356238" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="suicide" source="Orion">suicide</keyword> case of his girlfriend <keyword id="19566" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jiah-khan" source="Orion">Jiah Khan</keyword>. Pancholi, 32, the son of actors <keyword id="966" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aditya-pancholi" source="Orion">Aditya Pancholi</keyword> and Zarina Wahab, hasn't really been able to make a dent after his promising debut as the lead in the remake of "Hero" opposite Athiya Shetty in 2015. The film, which won him a Filmfare Award for best debut, was backed by Salman Khan and Subhash Ghai. It didn't do well and Pancholi's career has been moving in fits and starts since then. He has since worked in the little-known "Satellite Shankar" and "Time to Dance". Pancholi, who has also worked as assistant director on films such as Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Guzaarish" and Salman Khan-starrer "Ek Tha Tiger", hit the headlines when he was accused of abetting Jiah Khan's suicide. He was charged on the basis of a six-page letter purportedly written by Khan, who was found hanging in her Juhu home on June 3, 2013. In an interview to PTI in 2015, Pancholi had said, "My name will always be associated with her and I have no guilt for that. I am happy that something at least stays with me. I am sad that she ended her life. But at least her name is with me and I have no problems with it." On Friday, Pancholi was there with his mother when the judge read out the verdict. Special CBI judge A S Sayyad called him to the witness box and asked his name. When the actor said Sooraj, the judge asked him to state his full name. The actor then replied, "Sooraj Aditya Pancholi." The judge then said, "Due to paucity of evidence, this court holds you (Sooraj) not guilty... acquitted." Sooraj nodded with his head down and stepped out of the witness box. He didn't speak to reporters. Sooraj Pancholi, star son and actor gets an acquittal in Jiah Khan suicide case

This is the view held by five brokerage firms — ICICI Securities/Direct, Motilal Oswal, Prabhudas Lilladher and ShareKhan. They believe that good movies can help them replicate the March success which came with superhits like the controversial Kashmir Files; Rajamouli’s RRR, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period drama Gangubai Kathiawadi, followed up by KGF 2 in April. “They witnessed a March — which was the best ever in the history, led by superlative performances of movies,” ICICI Direct said in its views on PVR and INOX both. The March footfalls made up for half of the Jan-March quarters footfalls in theaters. But both these companies need more than a good month to turn things around. A strong recovery in footfalls and sales of these listed theatre companies will be driven by ‘strong content slate lines’, as per ICICI Direct. If all goes well, it estimates that both these companies can cross their pre-covid earnings in the current financial year. These companies are in desperate need of a ‘recovery worthy’ movie releases. INOX CEO Alok Tandon spoke of an influx of good releases in FY23, in a conversation with Business Insider India. “2022 or financial year 2023 will be one of the best for the Indian film industry… I feel like we have some very, very strong lineup,” Tandon said. However, it disappointed movie distributors as it was declared a theatrical flop. Singh’s Jayeshbhai Jordaar too did not live up to its expectations. Kangana Ranaut’s Dhakkad, Akshay Kumar’s Bachchan Pandey, Prabhas’ Radhe Shyam too failed to impress the audiences. Apart from 83, all the other movies were released after India had overcome the third Covid-19 wave. Pushpa and Spider Man in the Hindi belt — both released in December along with 83 — were among the few movies that managed to do well despite Omicron fears.
