In a huge setback to <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> Superstar <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword> has been held <keyword id="42742" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Guilty">guilty</keyword> by a <keyword id="242585" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mumbai-sessions-court">Mumbai Sessions Court</keyword> of killing a man in a 2002 hit-and-run crash case. Charges he has been found guilty of include, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, driving under the influence of alcohol and not possessing a licence. The sentencing is awaited. 
 The <keyword id="18182" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Judge">Judge</keyword>, reading out the verdict said that Salman Khan himself was driving the car that smashed into the six people, killing one and injuring the rest. The Judge also said that Khan was under the influence of alcohol when the incident occurred. Khan is now looking at a minimum jail term of 4 years and a maximum of 10 years. 
 The defence counsel of Salman Khan now get the chance to plead for leniency at the court seeking a lower jail term. They also have the chance of requesting the court to consider the statement of Khan’s <keyword id="6366401" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Driver">driver</keyword> that was earlier not admitted as an evidence by the court. If the court does agree to admit this new evidence, there is a possibility of some of his charges being struck down, or even facing a lighter jail term. Salman Khan also has the chance of now appealing to higher courts, the first would be at the <keyword id="48485" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bombay-high-court">Bombay High Court</keyword>. Khan is accused of driving his SUV into a group of homeless people sleeping near a Mumbai bakery, killing one of them. 
 
A string of prosecution witnesses, including survivors of the crash, have testified that Khan was at the wheel when his vehicle crashed at speed into a group of half a dozen men sleeping on the street in September 2002. 
The trial began in earnest last year after a series of court hearings and legal hold-ups. 
 
When Khan finally took the stand, he pleaded not guilty and told the court that his driver was responsible for mounting the pavement in Bandra West. 
 A constable attached to Khan's security detail said in his statement to police that the drunk <keyword id="271" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="actor">actor</keyword> lost control of the car while driving at about 90 kilometres (55 miles) an hour. 
 
"The people were sleeping on the footpath. Salman and (his cousin) Kamaal ran away from the spot," the constable, who died in 2007 of tuberculosis, had said. 
One of the sleeping labourers injured in the accident said in his statement that "Salman was so drunk that he fell. He stood but he fell again and then he... ran away." 
 
But Khan's lawyers said the actor had in fact been drinking water all evening and had climbed out of the driver's seat after the accident because the passenger side door had been damaged. 
 
They also said that the victim, Nurulah Mahbob Sharif, was killed during an operation to move the car, rather than the crash itself, when the bumper fell off and landed on him. 
Finally, last month, his driver took the stand and said he crashed after the front left tyre burst, making steering and braking difficult. 
 
The verdict is being awaited with baited breath, both by his fans and Bollywood studios who stand to lose millions if they have to cancel filming movies he has been signed up to. 
 
One report by PTI said that more than $31 million was riding on the verdict.

A Facebook account claiming to be of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi issued a threat to Salman Khan on Sunday, the police said. The post was directed at Punjabi singer Gippy Grewal, that said, "You consider Salman Khan a brother, but now it's time for your 'brother' to come and save you," read the Facebook post addressed to Gippy Grewal. "This message is also for Salman Khan - don't be in the illusion that Dawood will save you; no one can save you. Your dramatic response to Sidhu Moose Wala's death did not go unnoticed. "We all know the kind of person he was and the criminal associations he had. You've now landed on our radar. Consider this a trailer; the full film will be released soon. Flee to any country you wish, but remember, death doesn't require a visa; it comes uninvited," it added. Salman has been receiving death threats for a long time now. (ANI)

Salman Khan receives threat again; his security reviewed

Bollywood’s Dabbang superstar <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword> has been convicted in the 13 year old hit and run case. And this sure ain’t good news for the brands that he endorses. 
	 “This verdict impacts both brand Salman Khan and the brands that he is associated with differently. As far as the brand Salman Khan is concerned, it will definitely be adversely impacted,” said brand expert <keyword id="175362" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harish-Bijoor">Harish Bijoor</keyword>, CEO of Bijoor Consults. 
	 
	He explained that Khan’s huge fan following will be hit and his hero status will get affected. “A lot of his fans would have really preferred him to own up his mistake in the court of law. Instead, he has tried to fight it legally, which will not be taken down well by many of his followers,” added Bijoor. 
	 
	Talking about his brand endorsements, he feels that the brands he endorses will not be impacted much as consumers are mature and realise that it is advertising. “I see over 90% of the brands moving away from Salman Khan,” averred Bijoor. 
	 However, adman <keyword id="132751" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Naresh-Gupta">Naresh Gupta</keyword>, managing partner with Bang in the Middle feels otherwise. I don’t see the brands dumping Salman Khan immediately, for all of them signed him up knowing fully well that he has cases pending against him. His equity will be impacted in long term, as the news of his sentencing starts to build up. He would have a small phase of sympathy, but it will start to peter out. Long term his equity will definitely take a knock This is not the only case pending, the blackbuck one too is pending,” he said. 
	 It should be noted that currently, Salman Khan has over Rs 200 crore riding on him through his film projects. According to market estimates, his brand endorsements are pegged at nearly Rs 50 crore. “On <keyword id="1432297" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Times-Celebex">Times Celebex</keyword> , Khan is among the top 5, so he has a very strong following. His following in mass market will be even higher looking at how his movies do,” suggested Gupta. 
	 
	As per Times Celebex 2015 list, Salman Khan has the highest box office collections and is also the most searched Bollywood star online. Among the brand endorsements, Salman Khan ranks fifth with 10 brands in his kitty.

#SalmanVerdict: Salman Khan's hit-and-run case will surely knock brand Salman!

Convicted of killing one person and injuring 5 others, a <keyword id="2838854" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sessions-Court-in-Bombay">Sessions Court in Bombay</keyword> today sentenced <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword> to 5 years in jail, with no more compensation required to be paid to the victims’ families. Given that the jail term exceeds 3 years, there will be no immediate bail provided. Salman’s team of defence counsel will have to appeal to the <keyword id="48485" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bombay-high-court">Bombay High Court</keyword>. It is unlikely that the Bombay High Court will be able to hear the bail plea today. The Bombay High Court is also expected to go on vacation in a few days, while the <keyword id="166190" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="vacation-judge">vacation judge</keyword> has limited powers. At best, it could be a few days to weeks for Salman behind bars before he manages to get out on bail. 
Salman Khan, now, is likely to be taken for finger printing, followed by a medical check-up, post which he will be sent behind bars. But this is not Salman’s last legal resort. Post securing the bail, he has the option of appealing against the <keyword id="6366930" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Session-Court">Session Court</keyword>’s judgement at the Bombay High Court. Even after that, the last resort would be an appeal at the country’s apex court, the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword>. 
Salman has been found guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Salman’s counsel is expected to move the Bombay High Court now, having already come prepared for the worst. This despite his counsel trying its best to ensure that Salman didn’t get sentenced to more than 2 years in jail. Earlier in the day, Salman’s defence pleaded for a lenient jail term of 2 years with a hefty fine/compensation for the affected peoples’ families. The pleas that the superstar’s counsel made were primarily on two grounds. First, that this incident was mainly an aberration to the ‘human’ personality that Salman Khan is. The counsel pleaded to the Judge to consider the ‘humanitarian’ work that Salman has been doing bringing about such positive changes to several lives. The counsel even pleaded, “Don’t punish him more just because he is an <keyword id="271" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="actor">actor</keyword>.” 
The second and more important plea being made pertains again to two very high profile hit and run cases similar to this one. The first being the 1998 Sanjeev Nanda BMW case where Nanda ran over and killed six people including 3 police officers in Delhi and the second one being the Alistair Pereira case in Mumbai, where the latter mowed down and killed 7 people on the pavement. In both cases the Supreme Court handed out jail terms of 2 and 3 years respectively, despite the accused being under the influence of alcohol and behind the wheels when the incidents occurred. In the meanwhile, the court dismissed any perjury case to be filed against Salman’s <keyword id="6366401" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Driver">driver</keyword> <keyword id="167070" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ashok-Singh">Ashok Singh</keyword>.

In major reprieve for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=salman+khan">Salman Khan,</a> the <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> superstar has been acquitted of all charges in the <keyword id="1473269" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="2002-hit-and-run-case">2002 hit-and-run case</keyword> for lack of incriminating evidence against him. 
	
		"On basis of evidences produced by the prosecution, the appellant cannot be convicted, no matter how differently the common man thinks," the Bombay High Court ruled on Thursday.
	 
	
		He was convicted of all charges by a sessions court earlier this year in the case relating to 2002 when Salman’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Toyota+Land+Cruiser">Toyota Land Cruiser</a> had crashed into five men sleeping outside a bakery on Hill Road in Bandra in the early hours of September 28. One person was killed and four others were injured. <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword>'s lawyers had argued that his driver Ashok Singh was behind the wheels. He had then been sentenced to five years in jail. But later, the <keyword id="44554" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bombay-HC">Bombay HC</keyword> suspended the sentence after the actor appealed against his conviction.On Wednesday, the HC said three important things: The prosecution had failed to bring material on record that could prove beyond reasonable doubt that Salman was driving the car in the incident; the prosecution failed to convince the court that he was under the influence of alcohol; <keyword id="519556" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ravindra-Patil">Ravindra Patil</keyword>, who was Salman’s bodyguard when the incident happened (died in 2007), was a ‘wholly unreliable witness' and the credibility of his statement that the actor was driving drunk and had ignored his warnings repeatedly was questionable. 
	
		"If the witness is partly reliable, then corroboration is required. Ravindra Patil cannot be considered as a wholly reliable witness," the court said, asserting that the sessions court had made a mistake by relying on his statement.
	 
	
		Also, not examining singer Kamaal Khan, who was also in Salman Khan's car that night, was an error, the court observed.

Excitingly, Priyanka Chopra is leading the race with a monthly search volume of more than 4.2 million, however, Salman Khan has over 2 million monthly searches. The study has two segments bifurcated into Indian actors and actresses. Considering segments individually, the top three most popular actors are Salman Khan, Amrish Puri and Shahrukh Khan. The latter two were searched an average of 1.7 million times respectively. On the other hand, Priyanka Chopra, Sunny Leone, and Deepika Padukone are the leading ladies on the list. Another fascinating fact revealed in this case study is that Madhubala is the 6th most eminent actress with 1.3 million monthly global searches wherein Leone and Padukone have been searched over 3 million and 1.8 million times respectively. Katrina Kaif, Alia Bhatt, Imran Khan, and Ranveer Singh are the other prominent names in the search list of international audiences. Amitabh Bachchan stands at the top 7th position with a monthly search average of 720K. Fernando Angulo, Head of Communications, SEMrush, said, “It is always exciting to know about the film industry and surprisingly India and all other countries slightly have similar preference as Salman Khan is equally popular all around.  The beverages major broke the four year association with Salman Khan, saying Salman Khan was committed to an existing relationship with a daily TV show, which this year was to be sponsored by a brand that competes with the <keyword id="6385848" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coca-Cola-India">Coca-Cola India</keyword> product portfolio. 
 
"In light of this, both parties have mutually decided not to renew the current contract," the joint statement by Salman Khan and the company said. 
 
A source said that the company is in talks with young star Ranveer Singh to replace Salman. 
 
The company's decision to not to renew the contract with the 50-year-old actor is more to do with the image of Coca Cola, which is seen as a young brand, the source said. 
 
"That explains why Coca Cola is talking to a much younger star like Ranveer Singh," the source added. 
 
Khan has been among the top celebrity endorsers reportedly charging Rs 5 crore per year per brand. Recently, he had courted controversy when he supported Pakistani artists saying "they were not terrorists" in the wake of a debate on whether they should be allowed to work in Indian movies after the Uri attack. 
 
Coca-Cola India had roped in Khan as its brand ambassador for the second time to endorse its Thums Up brand in October 2012 replacing another Bollywood star Akshay Kumar. He had earlier endorsed the brand in early 2000s.

Superstar <keyword id="6354583" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="salman-khan">Salman Khan</keyword> has (finally) been convicted of poaching two blackbucks back in 1998. A <keyword id="6357685" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="jodhpur">Jodhpur</keyword> trial court sentenced the actor to five years in jail and a fine of Rs 10,000. However, all the co-accused -- <keyword id="333" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Saif-Ali-Khan">Saif Ali Khan</keyword>, <keyword id="6380080" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sonali-bendre">Sonali Bendre</keyword>, Neelam and <keyword id="6358125" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tabu">Tabu</keyword> -- have been acquitted. The actors were shooting of the movie Hum Saath Saath Hain in Kankani village near Jodhpur. Witnesses from the unwavering <keyword id="69006" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="bishnoi">Bishnoi</keyword> community saw the actor shoot the protected species of the rare antelope on the intervening night of 1st and 2nd October, 1998. They even jotted down the number plate of the jeep they were on. Later a case was filed by the Bishnoi community who worship the animal. (This is the <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/magazines/panache/how-a-committed-and-inspired-bishnoi-community-did-salman-khan-in/articleshow/63625066.cms">same community that was the inspiration behind the Chipko movement</a>.) The main witness, Poonamchand Bishnoi, said he saw the actor shoot the <keyword id="53463" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="blackbuck">blackbuck</keyword> while his co-stars egged him on. However, Salman claims the animal died of ‘natural causes’ and that he is being ‘framed’. This is not the only case of poaching against the actor. He has also been accused of killing a couple of chinkaras (a gazelle species) and a blackbuck in September of 1998 by the very same community. Here’s a timeline of accusations and acquittals. 26 September 1998: Mr Khan is accused of <a href="http://indianexpress.com/article/india/salman-khan-convicted-in-blackbuck-poaching-case-a-timeline-5124186/">shooting two chinkaras</a> at <keyword id="6404940" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="bhawad-village">Bhawad village</keyword> near Jodhpur. 28 September 1998: Salman Khan allegedly hunted two more chinkara near Ghoda Farm area in Osian region of Jodhpur. 2 October 1998: A police complaint was lodged against the five actors -- Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Neelam and Tabu -- by the Bishnoi community. 12 October 1998: Salman Khan is arrested, only to be granted bail and released 5 days later. 17 February 2006: Salman Khan is convicted by a trail court under the Wildlife Act and sentenced to one year in jail for poaching a chinkara at Bhavad village in September 1998. This is overturned after an appeal. 10 April 2006: A trial court convicted Salman Khan in the blackbuck case under the Wildlife Protection Act and sentenced him to <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/magazines/panache/1998-2016-a-timeline-of-the-blackbuck-killing-case/articleshow/53377957.cms">five years in jail, alongside a fine of Rs 25,000</a>. However, he spent less than a week in jail before getting bail. 24 August 2007: The Session Court upheld the conviction doled out in April 2006 and dismissed Salman Khan’s appeal. 31 August 2007: The Rajasthan High Court sentences the actor to five years in prison and then suspends the same on appeal after a week - the actor spent a week in jail. He was, however, ordered to not leave the country without permission. The High Court later dropped the charges levied against the actor under the Arms Act. December 2012: The Rajasthan High Court revised the charges against the actor and levied fresh charges against him under <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/nation/2017/jan/18/all-you-need-to-know-about-the-black-buck-case-1560878.html" data-type="tilCustomLink">Section 9/51 of the Wildlife Protection Act</a> - hunting or poaching of the protected blackbuck species is a punishable offence under the law. 12 November 2013: The Rajasthan High Court suspends the five-year sentence given in April 2006. 25 July 2016: The Rajasthan High Court <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/magazines/panache/1998-2016-a-timeline-of-the-blackbuck-killing-case/articleshow/53377957.cms">acquits Salman Khan in the 1998 chinkara and blackbuck poaching case</a>, claiming lack of evidence that the animals were shot by the actor’s licensed gun. 11 November 2016: The Rajasthan Government’s plea challenging his acquittal in the blackbuck poaching case and to fast-track the case is approved by the Supreme Court. Salman Khan is issued a notice. 18 January 2017: A Jodhpur <a href="https://www.firstpost.com/entertainment/salman-khan-acquitted-in-arms-act-case-by-jodhpur-court-but-his-legal-troubles-are-far-from-over-3209118.html">court acquits Khan</a> in the Arms Act Case wherein he was charged with possessing weapons with an expired licence while hunting the animals. 28 March 2018: Final arguments of the case were completed in the trial court. April 5, 2018: A Jodhpur court convicts Khan to serve a 5-year jail term and pay Rs 10,000 penalty. In the meanwhile, Khan has made myriad movies while the various trials were on, becoming one of the biggest celebrities in the country. According to Forbes, Khan’s net pre-tax earnings in 2017 amount to $37 million, earning him a spot on the publication’s 2017 Celebrity 100 List of World’s Highest Earning Entertainers.
