<keyword id="150205" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="amartya" source="Orion">Amartya</keyword> Chakraborty, a 19-year-old three-time former national para-swimming champion, passed away at the GB Pant Hospital here on Wednesday due to "sudden cardio-respiratory arrest". Amartya, who hailed from <keyword id="314667" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="salkia" source="Orion">Salkia</keyword> in Howrah district in West Bengal, was undergoing treatment at the hospital for a spinal cord disorder, which had left his lower body almost paralysed. The champion swimmer, who won around 30 medals at the national level, made his mark in the sub-junior and junior levels between 2015 and 2017 after he was classified under temporary disability category. But he was not allowed to compete in the Asian Youth Para Games in Dubai in December 2017 following a protest over his disability. He was disqualified soon after and declared "ineligible" by the <keyword id="381222" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="international-paralympic-committee" source="Orion">International Paralympic Committee</keyword> (IPC). A report in saachibaat.com had said days before the champion swimmer's death that Amartya's condition was serious and his father wasn't able to afford his treatment in a private hospital. The report said that, Amartya's spinal cord had become "completely unbalanced" and the lower part of the body had stopped working. "In medical terms, this is called arteriovenous malformation (AVM). As a result, he is lying on the bed," the report had said. His father, Amitosh, had been quoted as saying that the treatment of his son was only possible at AIIMS (Delhi) or in hospitals in England and the US, and it would cost around Rs 50 lakh to treat him abroad. Kolkata, Apr 9 () A top official and a health worker at a state-run hospital in neighbouring Howrah district tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, officials at the state health department said.Both of them have been shifted to MR Bangur Hospital in south Kolkata, one of the four facilities earmarked in the city for treatment of COVID-19 patients, they said."The medical superintendent-cum-vice principal (MSVP) of the Howrah district hospital was under home quarantine since Monday, as he had developed symptoms of coronavirus infection. After his swab tested positive this morning he was taken to MR Bangur Hospital," an official said.Some doctors at the Howrah hospital have been placed under quarantine, and the process of identifying all those who came in contact with the MSVP and the medical staff member was underway, he said.According to the official, the MSVP had come in contact with a COVID-19 patient from Salkia in the district, who died due to the disease on March 30. Kolkata/ Siliguri, Apr 26 () The inter-ministerial central teams visiting West Bengal to take stock of situation relating to COVID-19, toured several areas of Kolkata and Siliguri on Sunday to inspect if lockdown restriction were being followed.The team stationed in Kolkata, which is led by senior bureaucrat in the Ministry of Defence Apurba Chandra, visited Garden Reach, Ekbalpur, Khidderpore, Mominpur, Chetla and Kalighat areas in the south and southwestern parts the city. They were escorted by sleuths of the Kolkata Police.They went around in a convoy and did not interact with anyone, including the press. The team also inspected certain pockets of Howrah, such as Salkia and Golabari to see for themselves enforcement of the lockdown.In Siliguri, the central team led by senior official Vineet Joshi visited Bidhan Market and some other adjoining areas, and interacted with shopkeepers and locals. The team enquired if the people were wearing masks and using sanitisers."It seems some people are not taking the lockdown seriously. Kolkata, Jul 2 () He has blurry vision and finds it difficult to walk without support, but 98-year-old Sripathi Nayaben in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district has shown the world how to beat all odds with positivity, as he recovered from coronavirus and returned to normal life. Nayaban is probably the oldest man in the country to have recovered from the deadly disease. He returned home on Wednesday evening, with doctors saying that the "man had been able to pull through as he had no comorbidities". "Nayaban had been very positive about his recovery since the day he was brought here for treatment. And it actually did the trick. We did put in our best efforts, but his determination was commendable. Also, he had no comorbidity," Soumyadeep Chakraborty, who treated him in a private nursing home in Kankurgachi here, said. Nayaban, a resident of Diamond Harbour area of South 24 Parganas, was taken to hospital on June 22 after his test results showed that he had contracted the disease, his son Kanakkanti said. When approached, the 1922-born said, "I am totally fine... I am feeling better." In Howrah, too, a 95-year-old man was discharged from a hospital on Wednesday after he emerged victorious in the war against the viral disease. Gobindo Halder, a resident of Salkia area in the district, was taken to a nearby hospital on June 21, after he complained of COVID-like symptoms. He tested positive for the highly contagious disease the same day. He was, however, discharged from the hospital as he tested negative twice for the disease. "Halder has recovered fully, but he is still weak as he had pneumonia. Mentally, however, he is very strong. His recovery has been quick partially because of his willpower and determination," a senior doctor at an Uluberia hospital, where he was treated, said. A senior official of the state health department said the fight put up against the disease by Nayaban and Halder should inspire one and all, amid the ongoing crisis. "If men of their age can defeat the virus with their positivity and strength of will, others, too, should keep their hopes high. There is nothing to worry or hide. (Eds: Combining related stories, adding IMA reaction) New Delhi/Indore, Apr 9 () A 62-year-old doctor, who had tested positive for COVID-19, died in Indore on Thursday, as authorities in many parts of the country put medical professionals under quarantine after they tested positive for the virus and in some cases as a preventive measure given their vulnerability to catch the fast-spreading infection.Though there is no separate figures to show how many medical professionals have been afflicted or quarantined in India so far, these isolation measures by state authorities were taken for the frontline warriors as the nationwide tally of conformed cases of COVID-19 neared 6,500 and the death toll inched towards 200 mark.Working in dire conditions, the medical professionals, who have also been subjected to sporadic assaults in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, came for a huge praise from several leaders for their contribution with Union minister Jitendra Singh lauding them as "corona warriors" for putting all efforts to ensure the safety of people.Concerned over incidents of assaults against doctors, Indian Medical Association (IMA) demanded a law to deal with such crimes while Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal warned of strict action against those misbehaving with healthcare personnel, a day after two women resident doctors of Safdarjung Hospital were assaulted following rumours that they are "spreading COVID-19"."It's a feeling of disgust. Nothing can justify the attacks on medical professionals who are battling the deadly disease as frontline warrirors.
