He said that Boeing is one of the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) that has coordinated most with India in this direction. <keyword id="20666703" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gupte" source="keywords">Gupte</keyword> said that a lot of discussion at the Indus X event -- which is being held on the sidelines of the Raisina Dialogue 2024 -- is around co-development and co-production. Speaking to ANI, Salil Gupte said, "Several products for defence, that are in the pipeline for co-development...Boeing has decided to specifically participate in those types of programmes, because in defence, under the 'self-reliance' theme, India is moving from being one of the largest importers of products to developing its own platforms here." "Some of it will be done totally with Indian companies and some of it will do in partnership with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM). Boeing has been one of the OEMs that has coordinated most with India," he added. Gupte said that Boeing is exporting worth of Rs 10000 crores per annum as part of 'Make in India' programme. "We have Rs 10000 crores per annum of sourcing that we export from India already as part of our 'Make in India' programme. And now we think that our new engineering centre in Bangalore, it is an opportunity to combine the strong engineering capability with manufacturing capability to give a fillip to the Make in India programme," he said. The Boeing India President further said that he is expecting over 2500 aircraft to come to India over the course of the next 20 years. "In civil aviation, we see over 2500 aircraft that will be coming in India over the next 20 years, which makes it more than 10 aircraft per month. Not just aircraft, but airlines are also growing very rapidly. Akasa Air, one of the fastest-growing airlines in history, is now going international and Air India is placing large orders in the last year as they spread their wings into long-haul flights," Gupte further said. India moving from one of largest importers to developing its own platforms: Boeing India Prez Salil Gupte

Mumbai, Mar 21 (PTI) US aircraft maker <keyword id="6357957" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="boeing" source="Orion">Boeing</keyword> has said India may require 31,000 pilots and some 26,000 mechanics over the next 20 years amid the growing order book of the aircraft original equipment manufacturers. Speaking on the sidelines of a CII event here, <keyword id="189173" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="boeing-india" source="Orion">Boeing India</keyword> President <keyword id="7317809" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="salil-gupte" source="Orion">Salil Gupte</keyword> also said the South Asian region is expected to remain the fastest growing market globally over the next 20 years. "India is going to need over 31,000 pilots and 26,000 mechanics over the next 20 years to take care of the aircraft coming in. This is as important a part of the Indian growth story as the aircraft (orders)," Gupte told reporters. He said considering India's air traffic growth, a lot of focus has to be on making infrastructure robust, both hard infrastructure which includes airports as well as critical infrastructure, which includes pilots, among others. It may be mentioned here that Tata Group-owned <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword> had last month announced placing orders for a total of 470 planes with both Boeing and European aviation major <keyword id="6356166" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="airbus" source="Orion">Airbus</keyword>. Last September, Boeing had projected India's air traffic growth at around 7 per cent through 2040. He also said that after coming out of the pandemic, the recovery in air travel demand has stunned the world and Boeing does not see any impact of the financial crisis on air travel growth. It is "too early to know what the consequences of the bank situation of the US and Europe and others are going to be. At this stage, we really see no slowdown in the demand for aviation," Gupte added. There is a huge market for narrow body aircraft for Boeing in India, he said and added that, " (as much as) 90 per cent of the market over the next 20 years is going to be a narrow body market and we expect we will be successful in competing for those every single campaign (aircraft order)." Gupte also emphasized that Boeing has a leadership position in the wide- body (twin aisle) aircraft segment globally and it will remain so in all the markets, including India.

Air India, Air India Express and Vistara pause to pay special inflight homage to Ratan Tata after his passing

New Delhi/Mumbai, At least 50 requests to take back as many leased planes from two Indian airlines in less than two weeks. Petitions from lessors seeking to enforce rights under international norms and concerns over a possible spike in the risk premium for leasing aircraft for domestic carriers. Cash-strapped <keyword id="11252024" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="go-first" source="Orion">Go First</keyword> being admitted for insolvency resolution proceedings on a voluntary plea and subsequent moratorium has left a trail of concerns and uncertainties for aircraft lessors with respect to India, the world's third-largest aviation market. Currently, Indian carriers have around 700 planes and some of them, including Air India, are expanding their fleet. Most of the commercial aircraft in the country are operated through the sale and lease-back model, and there are concerns that developments related to Go First could push leasing costs higher. Indian carriers are projected to require more than 2,200 aircraft in the next 20 years. Advisory firm Primus Partners' Co-Founder &amp; CEO, Public Policy Realisation, Nilaya Varma said the perception of India as a high-risk jurisdiction could translate into higher risk premiums to other local airlines. "This means higher lease rentals for domestic carries and increase in the cost of doing business implying higher costs being passed onto passengers in the form of high-ticket prices, thereby making it more difficult for Indian airlines to compete with their international counterparts," Varma noted. Regional airline Star Air's CEO Simran Singh Tiwana said the NCLT (National Company Law Tribunal) ruling in favour of Go First may not be very pleasing for the lessors and that is the challenge Indian aviation could face at the international level. "Some ruling will hurt some lessors... those concerns will be voiced (by them)". A senior aviation industry executive said that lessors might think that airline companies in India could make their life miserable by going to court. There is also the possibility of more lessors putting in requests for deregistration of planes leased to some other airline thinking that they get stuck in litigation, the executive said on the condition of anonymity. So far this month, lessors have approached the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for deregistration of 45 Go First planes and five SpiceJet planes under the Cape Town Convention. Under the Cape Town Convention (CTC), if a lessor has invoked the Irrevocable De-registration and Export Request Authorisation (IDERA), then the plane concerned has to be deregistered. The same has to be done in five working days but due to the NCLT imposing moratorium under insolvency proceedings, lessors cannot take back Go First planes at least for now. Citing that the <keyword id="17305212" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="go-first-insolvency" source="Orion">Go First insolvency</keyword> proceedings are a material development that implicates CTC compliance in India, the Aviation Working Group (AWG) has put the country on the watchlist with a negative outlook. "The DGCA's failure to process IDERA deregistration applications for aircraft whose leases were terminated prior to the imposition of the moratorium within the timetable set forth in its SOP results in a negative outlook for India's scoring...," the AWG said in an update on May 11. The AWG is a not-for-profit legal entity comprised of major aviation manufacturers, leasing companies and financial institutions. It includes Boeing and Airbus. Go First Lessors are ruffled by the Go First crisis, which started when the carrier decided to file for voluntary insolvency resolution proceedings before the NCLT on May 2. The lessors sought deregistartion and repossession of 45 planes of Go First, which also suspended operations from May 3. Soon after the NCLT admitted the airline's plea, leading lessor SMBC Aviation moved the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) against the NCLT ruling. On May 11, SMBC Aviation told the appellate tribunal that the Indian aviation sector is being seen as a risky jurisdiction in light of the fate of Kingfisher and Jet Airways. Two other lessors -- G Y Aviation and SFV Aircraft Holdings -- also moved the appellate tribunal. These lessors have around 21 planes that have been leased to Go First. The NCLAT is to continue the hearing on Monday. Go First has around 55 aircraft in its fleet and 28 of them are grounded due to non-availability of Pratt &amp; Whitney engines. The grouding of the planes resulted in fund crunch and forced the airline, which has been flying for more than 17 years, to file for insolvency proceedings. SpiceJet The budget carrier is facing deregistration of at least five aircraft by lessors and one lessor has also filed an insolvency plea against the airline. "We want to scotch any speculation that may have arisen due to the filing by another airline. The airline is firmly focussed on its business and remains in active talks with investors to raise funds," the airline said on May 11. In the last week, lessors have requested DGCA for deregistration of five SpiceJet aircraft. On May 8, the NCLT issued a notice to the carrier on the insolvency plea filed by lessor AirCastle (Ireland) Ltd and the matter is scheduled for a hearing next week. The airline has around 70 planes in its fleet and is looking to revive 25 grounded Boeing 737 and Q400 aircraft. Many of its planes are grounded due to various reasons. Soon after Go First filed for voluntary insolvency resolution proceedings on May 2, Civil Aviation Minister <keyword id="29632" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jyotiraditya-scindia" source="Orion">Jyotiraditya Scindia</keyword> on Tuesday said "It is prudent to wait for the judicial process to run its course". And on May 12, Boeing India President Salil Gupte said the crisis at Go First will not change the trajectory of the Indian civil aviation market in terms of growth and macro trends while legislative clarity on aircraft leasing aspects will provide more comfort to the lessors. Meanwhile, WadiaGroup in a statement on Sunday alleged that AWG's recent warning to India is aweak and desperate attempt to influence NCLAT ahead of the hearing. "AWGshould hold its own members accountable for failing the Indian Aviation industry, as opposed to issuing a warning to India," it said. Pratt &amp; Whitney, in essence, has abused international conventions and contractual obligations by refusing to comply with the ruling of the international arbitrator to which all reputable companies are bound, including AWG's members. "AWG should focus on ensuring that its own members abide by international arbitration awards. Rather than issuing threatening watchlist notices to India and quoting the Cape TownConvention (CTC) to influence the proceedings which are currently being heard in the NCLAT," it stated. "AWG should first address the root cause by advising Pratt &amp; Whitney to comply with the law and abide by the award issued by the emergency arbitrator appointed in accordance with the 2016 Arbitration Rules of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) to which, Pratt and Whitney voluntarily submitted themselves," the statement said. "The Airbus NEO(new engine options) with P&amp;W engines, sold on the plank of fuel efficiency failed leading to 100 aircraft currently lying idle in India and many more around the world. The entire Indian aviation sector is hit due to sub-standard products supplied by the engine makers," said Wadia Group vice chairman <keyword id="459296" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="varun-berry" source="Orion">Varun Berry</keyword>. "P&amp;W cannot wash their hands off their liabilities after supplying sub-standard engines which has led to huge losses for all airlines. 18 per cent of Indian aviation capacity is currently grounded due to non-supply of engines by P&amp;W. "The issue is rampant and several airlines across the world are severely affected by the engine failures by P&amp;W and hence the claim by Go First of failure due toP&amp;W engines has huge credence. Go First maintained profitability comparable to the industry leader for approximately 5 years until COVID and beyond including in the year 21-22" he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration expects civil aviation to play a crucial role in its ambitious goal of making <a href="https://www.narendramodi.in/pm-modi-s-aspirational-call-for-5-trillion-dollar-economy-in-5-years-547486">India a $5 trillion economy </a>by 2024."We can expect huge growth in the next five to 10 years," Sanjay Kumar, chief strategy and revenue officer of IndiGo, told Insider of the Indian aviation market. IndiGo is India's market leader in domestic traffic <a href="https://www.ibef.org/industry/indian-aviation/showcase/indigo">with 55% share.</a>"The growing middle-class population will start traveling as the Americans or Chinese do. We've so far not seen this [in India] at all," Kumar added.<h2>A volatile market</h2>Until the second half of 2018, India was home to the fastest-growing aviation market in the world, with passenger numbers ballooning.Growth nosedived in 2019 due to factors including crew shortage, taxes on jet fuel, and unsustainable business models.At the heart of India's spiraling airline crisis was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jet-airways-shuts-down-after-running-out-of-money-2019-4">the collapse of Jet Airways</a>, the country's oldest and first successful private airline. Mounting debts, poor acquisitions, and cheaper prices offered by rivals killed the 26-year-old Jet Airways.The Indian aviation market is so volatile that about <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_defunct_airlines_of_India">50 players have shut shop</a> in the past three decades and changed billionaires into millionaires.And this was all before the pandemic decimated the industry.But a troubled industry also means abundant talent in the market for hire, low asset costs, and weakened competitors, factors that could play a role in Jhunjhunwala's favor.<h2>A market dominated by low-cost carriers</h2>Unlike the aviation markets of the western world, where the segment is multi-layered and caters to a wide range of travelers, carriers in India need to keep a close watch on ticket costs. About 80% of <a href="https://www.dgca.gov.in/digigov-portal/?page=jsp/dgca/InventoryList/dataReports/aviationDataStatistics/handbookCivilAviation/HANDBOOK2018-19.pdf&amp;main4252/4205/sericename">the market share</a> in India is cornered by low-cost carrier models (LCC), which make a profit through volume by selling seats at cheap rates.Six large airlines dominate the domestic skies in India: IndiGo, SpiceJet, GoAir (which rebranded as GoFirst), AirAsia India, Vistara, and Air India. While Vistara and Air India are classified as no-frills carriers, the rest operate as LCC.Unlike all other existing market players, Akasa is an ultra low-cost carrier (ULCC), which means every little space inside the plane – from paper cups or luggage bins — is for sale for advertising. Further, Akasa can cut back on all expendable costs and fly more hours a day while keeping the seat fares separate from all other related services like food. To be successful, Akasa must get the combination of these correct, industry experts said."Akasa's bet is on the fragility of one or more carriers and as a well-capitalized new entrant, it may very well be able to gain a strong foothold," said Satyendra Pandey, managing partner at India-based aviation services firm AT-TV.Rival carriers are bound to match Akasa's fares from day one of its operations, Pandey said – which means it'll be entering a profitless growth environment. A careful assessment of the market should incorporate both business and behavioral trends, Pandey said."Force-fitting western frameworks just does not work. Getting this wrong has meant that even extremely well-funded airlines have consistently failed to turn a profit and witnessed continuous margin deterioration. Levers that worked pre-pandemic may not quite work the same," Pandey added."If the ULCC model is implemented, Akasa Air may expand the overall market by stimulation due to low airfares," said Manvi Hooda, chief of consulting and research at the aviation consulting firm, CAPA India."India remains an under-penetrated air travel market. Given India is a value-sensitive market, low airfares can significantly stimulate the market," said Hooda.
