Prabhas' Kalki 2898 AD enters 700 crore club in first week; eyes spot of biggest Hindi hit of 2024!

India's largest cinema exhibitor, <keyword id="19986619" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pvr-inox" source="keywords">PVR INOX</keyword>, on Wednesday reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 12.8 crore in the third quarter of the current fiscal. The company, earlier known as <keyword id="19898945" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="pvr" source="keywords">PVR</keyword> Ltd, posted a net profit of Rs 165 crore in the October-December period a year ago, according to a regulatory filing. Its revenue from operations stood at Rs 1,545.9 crore in the second quarter of the current fiscal. In the year-ago period, the same was at Rs 940 crore. The December quarter results came after the merger of rival Inox into PVR, hence it is not comparable, the company said. "Consolidated financial results for the quarter and nine months ended December 31, 2023 are not comparable to those reported for quarter and nine months ended December 31, 2022 due to the amalgamation of PVR INOX Limited (formerly known as PVR) with INOX Leisure Ltd with effect from January 1, 2023," it said. Over the box office performance of the films, PVR Inox said: "December emerged as the highest grossing month of 2023 with stellar performance of films released during the month." Hindi film 'Animal', which grossed over Rs 650 crore, became a phenomenal success. 'Salaar' grossed Rs 480 crore, 'Dunki' earned Rs 270 crore and Sam Bahadur Rs 110 crore. Managing Director Ajay Bijli said, "It is really heartening to see that in the year 2023, India stands out as the sole major market worldwide to surpass the pre-pandemic peak in box office collections." For the upcoming months, PVR Inox has a line up of movie releases which includes 'Teri Baaton Main Aisa Uljha Jiya' and 'Article 370' in February. 'Yodha', 'Laapataa Ladies' and 'The Crew' are coming in March. Similarly from South, it has a line up of some big films in February like 'Lal Salaam' in Tamil starring Rajinikanth, and 'Eagle' in Telugu starring Ravi Teja. While from Hollywood, the line up includes 'Argylle' and 'Madame Web' in February; 'Dune Part 2', 'Kung Fu Panda 4' and 'Arthur the King' in March. Shares of PVR INOX Ltd settled at Rs 1,455 on the BSE on Wednesday, down 0.47% from previous close. PVR INOX's total expenses in December were at Rs 1,587.2 crore. Its total income in the December quarter was Rs 1,604.7 crore. During the quarter, the company recorded 3.65 crore admissions with an ATP (average ticket price) of Rs 271, registering a 14% growth year on year, PVR Inox said an earnings statement. The SPH (spend per head) was Rs 132 in the December quarter, up 8% year on year. "This led to a 14% increase in ticket sales, an 8% rise in food &amp; beverage sales, and a 23% boost in ad sales when compared to pro forma figures from Q3 FY23," it added. During the quarter, PVR INOX added 29 new screens by openings in 7 cinemas during the quarter. Currently, PVR Inox screen portfolio includes 1,712 screens spread across 113 cities in India and Sri Lanka.

Animal, Salaar help PVR INOX post Q3 revenue at over Rs 15,000 crore

Mumbai, Filmmaker Prashanth Neel says movies like his "<keyword id="6400922" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kgf" source="Orion">KGF</keyword>" franchise that organically travel across the country do well, a phenomenon he hopes is repeated with his latest directorial "<keyword id="10367331" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="salaar" source="Orion">Salaar</keyword>: Part 1 - Ceasefire". Neel and Yash, the lead star of "KGF" series, rose to national prominence after the success of "KGF: Chapter 1", the 2018 Kannada period action film. Its 2022 follow-up, "KGF: Chapter 2" also starred Bollywood actors Raveena Tandon and Sanjay Dutt in key roles. The director, who made his debut with 2014's "Ugramm", said he never plans his films as pan-India projects. "I've written a story and I've executed it. I don't know if it ('Salaar') is going to be a pan-India movie or not. But if it becomes a pan-India movie, then that's an absolute bonus for all of us. Like, 'KGF' happened very organically. "Movies that happen organically always do well. You can't plan to make a pan-India movie, you can't plan and say that I'm going to bring these actors from this industry to make it a pan-India movie. It doesn't work like that," Neel told PTI in an interview here. "Salaar" revolves around two friends Deva and Vardha, played by <keyword id="104063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="prabhas" source="Orion">Prabhas</keyword> and <keyword id="572189" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="prithviraj-sukumaran" source="Orion">Prithviraj Sukumaran</keyword>, who end up becoming arch rivals. It will be released on Friday. The 43-year-old director said the journey of the film started over 15 years ago. "It was an idea that was in my head. But it needed a very big budget. So, I made my first film 'Ugramm', then I made 'KGF'. I was occupied with 'KGF' for almost eight years. During COVID-19, I narrated this subject ('Salaar') to Prabhas sir and he agreed to do it," he recalled. The USP of "Salaar" is an emotion between two friends and how this emotion translates to violence forms the core of the story, Neel said. According to the director, equal importance should be given to the story and the characters in big-budget films. "We make a movie to tell a story and we want the right characters, right actors to portray every role. There's a commercial aspect with a star and we get bigger budgets to do what we want. But the criteria is the same that this is the character, it is not the hero who is playing the hero because if we think like that then we have lost the battle," he added. With "Salaar", Neel said his aim was for Prabhas ("Baahubali") to shed his superstar persona. "There was never a pressure to make 'Salaar'. The idea is to make sure that the actor looks like a character. You don't want to show Prabhas as Prabhas, you want to show him as a character and I tried our best to do something like that," he said. While the director acknowledged that Prabhas has had a difficult run at the box office with his recent releases "Adipurush" and "Radhe Shyam", he said a star can always bounce back after a hit film. "Prabhas is a big star. After 'Baahubali', he became the biggest star. People are not going to forget something like that. Stars have always been stars; they can have one flop or 20 flops, they just need to give one hit. Recently, <keyword id="1671" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shah-rukh-khan" source="Orion">Shah Rukh Khan</keyword> showed us that a star is always a star, there's no denying that," Neel added. A box office showdown is expected between "Salaar" and Rajkumar Hirani's "Dunki". The latter, starring Shah Rukh Khan, will hit the screens a day before "Salaar" on Thursday. About the release, Neel said he doesn't meddle in the business aspect of a movie. "I don't get involved in the logistics of what happens after the movie is ready. My brief is I've to make a movie on a given budget and I've to give it to them at a time that they want to release," he said. The filmmaker said he has utmost respect for Hirani and Shah Rukh. "I loved whatever they put out (referring to assets of 'Dunki'). People always want to see the most human thing in any trailer or teaser, so we try to do that. Stars are always stars, says Salaar director on Prabhas' recent box office run

Mumbai, First part of Prabhas-led action film series "<keyword id="10367331" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="salaar" source="Orion">Salaar</keyword>" will hit the theatres on December 22, the makers announced Friday, setting up stage for a <keyword id="25892" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="box-office" source="Orion">box office</keyword> clash with superstar Shah Rukh Khan's "<keyword id="13651161" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dunki" source="Orion">Dunki</keyword>" releasing on the same day. Producer Hombale Films shared the release date of the much-anticipated film, titled '"Salaar Part 1: Ceasefire", on the banner's official page on X. "#SalaarCeaseFire Worldwide Release On Dec 22, 2023," the post read. The movie was originally scheduled to premiere on September 28 but earlier this month the release was pushed by the makers due to "unforseen circumstances". The first part of the pan-India film series is billed as a big-budget action adventure. It is directed by Prashanth Neel of the "KGF" franchise fame and produced by Vijay Kiragandur. The film will also feature Prithviraj Sukumaran, Shruti Haasan, Eshwari Rao, Jagapathi Babu and Sriya Reddy. "Dunki" is directed by Rajkumar Hirani from a script he co-wrote with Abhijaat Joshi and Kanika Dhillon. The film will be Shah Rukh's third release of 2023 after "Pathaan" and "Jawan". Both the films have crossed Rs 1000 crore mark at the global box office.

Vijay Kiragandur, the founder of Hombale Films, said the company is planning to produce movies in all south languages. "We intend to invest Rs 3,000 crore for the next five years in the entertainment industry in India. We believe the entertainment industry will grow more and more. "It will be a mixed bag of stories. Every year there will be five-six films including one event movie. As of now we have plans of making movies in all south languages," Kiragandur told PTI in an interview. The goal, the producer said, is to reach out to a wider audience through culturally rooted stories. "We want to make something that is liked by the global audience, but we want it to be rooted in our culture and tradition. We want to leave something behind for the younger generation. We also want to contribute towards the Indian economy," he added. In order to expand their viewership, the Bangalore-based production banner has decided to join hands with writers and filmmakers from the Hindi film industry. Without divulging details, Hombale Films partner Chaluve Gowda said they have roped in two leading writers from Bollywood to pen movies for the banner. "We are working with a couple of writers in Hindi... Once the story is ready then we will look for directors and then actors. We first concentrate on writers because they are the ones who create the story," he said. The company's upcoming movie slate includes pan-India Prabhas-starrer "Salaar", set to be released on September 28. The action adventure film is directed by Prashanth Neel. They are also backing multilingual film "Dhoomam", Kannada action movie "Bagheera" and <keyword id="6356629" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tamil" source="Orion">Tamil</keyword> film "Raghuthata" with Keerti Suresh. "For the next year we have four to five movies and for another two years we will have 12 to 14 movies," Kiragandur added. In 2024, there is a social thriller "Tyson" in pipeline with Prithviraj Sukumaran, "Richard Anthony" with Rakshit Shetty and a movie with director Sudha Kongara of "Soorarai Pottru" fame. Hombale Films, which was founded in 2013, tasted pan-India success in 2018 with period action "K.G.F: Chapter 1" starring Yash. The first film produced by the company was Puneeth Rajkumar-led "Ninnindale". This year the banner had a golden run at the global box office with "KGF: Chapter 2" and "Kantara" emerging as big successes. Both the movies have reportedly earned over Rs 2,000 crore worldwide. "We were able to beat some records that we created, like 'Kantara' became the highest grossing film in Karnataka. For 'KGF 2' the footfalls were six crore and for 'Kantara' it was about two-and-half to three crore," Kiragandur said. Also in the pipeline is the third part of "KGF", which Gowda said will become their focus after director Neel completes "Salaar". "There are plans to make 'KGF 3'. Currently, Prashant is busy with 'Salaar' and once he has completed the movie then he will work on the script (for 'KGF 3'). He has a storyline... It can happen next year or after that," the producer said.
