Tamil drama "<keyword id="10477675" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="koozhangal" source="Orion">Koozhangal</keyword>" ("Pebbles"), directed by filmmaker Vinothraj PS, has been selected as <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s official entry for the 94th Academy Awards. The movie follows an alcoholic abusive husband who, after his long-suffering wife runs off, sets out with his young son to find her and bring her back. It stars newcomers --Chellapandi and Karuththadaiyaan -- and is produced by <keyword id="2571616" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vignesh-shivan" source="Orion">Vignesh Shivan</keyword> and Nayanthara. "India's official entry for Oscars this year is 'Koozhangal'. It was picked by a 15-member jury, headed by filmmaker Shaji N Karun, in a unanimous decision," Supran Sen, Secretary General, Film Federation of India, told PTI. A total of 14 films, including Malayalam feature --"Nayattu", Tamil film "Mandela", filmmaker Shoojit Sircar's "Sardar Udham", Vidya Balan-starrer "Sherni", Farhan Akhtar's "Toofan", Captain <keyword id="188665" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vikram-batra" source="Orion">Vikram Batra</keyword> biopic "Shershaah" and Marathi film "Godavari", were in the race. Vinothraj said he was grateful for all the love and support. "Could not be more happier to receive this news," he tweeted. "Koozhangal" had won the top honour, the Tiger Award for best film, at the 50th International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), earlier this year. Following the announcement, filmmaker Hansal Mehta sent his best wishes to the team behind "Koozhangal". "All the best to this little gem! What is important is that this film's onward journey gets solid support both strategic and financial or else these selections only remain a local cause for celebration," he tweeted. Director Onir also congratulated the cast and crew and said he is looking forward to watch the film in theatre. "Congratulations@PsVinothraj@VigneshShivN@AmudhavanKar. The last Indian film that made it to the final five in the best international feature category was Ashutosh Gowariker's Aamir Khan-starrer "Lagaan" in 2001. Tamil drama 'Koozhangal' is India's official entry for Oscars 2022

Streaming platform <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword> on Friday announced that the much-awaited <keyword id="9920285" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="series-adaptation">series adaptation</keyword> of "A Suitable Boy" from filmmaker <keyword id="7999" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mira-Nair">Mira Nair</keyword> will premiere on October 23. An official adaptation of acclaimed author <keyword id="196246" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vikram-Seth">Vikram Seth</keyword>''s classic novel of the same name, the six-part drama has already aired on BBC in the UK and Ireland. Seth's novel charts the fortunes of four large families in North India of 1951, a time when the country was carving its own identity as an independent nation by planning to go to the polls for its first democratic general election. The story focuses on 19-year-old university student Lata, portrayed by newcomer Tanya Maniktala, who struggles with her life being mapped out thanks to old traditions and an overbearing mother who wants to find her a suitable husband. In the series, Khatter plays Maan Kapoor, the wayward son of a politician, Tabu as his love interest Saeeda Bai, a courtesan. Apart from Maniktala, Khatter and Tabu, the show also features Rasika Dugal as Lata's sister, Ram Kapoor as minister Mahesh Kapoor and Maan's father, Mahira Kakkar as Rupa Mehra, Vivaan Shah as Varun Mehra, Shahana Goswami as Meenakshi Chatterji Mehra, Namit Das as Haresh Khanna and Danesh Razvi as Kabir Durrani. Irrfan Khan’s inspiring journey from Chandrakanta to Macbeth to a father struggling to get his child into a school

For lovers of cinema, 23rd September was a momentous day. The 17-member Film Federation of India (FFI) jury headed by veteran director and actor Amol Palekar was about to announce India’s official entry for the 2016 <keyword id="6376611" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="oscars">Oscars</keyword>. Close to 30 films were in the running. 
 Social media transformed into a world of speculation, with critics and movie-buffs debating the merits and demerits of all the films in contention and predicting which movie would infact get the distinction of proving its mettle and be selected as the <keyword id="1282732" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Foreign-Film-Category">Foreign Film Category</keyword> at the Oscars. It was really a matter of the right pick. 
 The favourites were the usual- Masaan, <keyword id="6355578" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Court">Court</keyword>, Killa, Kaaka Muttai, and surprisingly even Baahubali. (Though, a majority, including me, fervently wished Baahubali wouldn’t make the cut) 
 
Finally, at 4 pm, the verdict was out. 
 The film chosen was the multi-lingual dramedy ‘Court,’ helmed by first time director <keyword id="1254212" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Chaitanya-Tamhane">Chaitanya Tamhane</keyword> and produced by <keyword id="1354966" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Vivek-Gomber">Vivek Gomber</keyword> (who also acted in the movie) 
The unanimous exaltation of ‘Yes, this movie might have a chance’ by movie-buffs, film critics and the general public alike, proved more than anything how deserving of this Court really was. 
 
As Amol Palekar later admitted, the decision to choose Court was unanimous. 
 
 
 
 
And, as India waits until 14 January, 2016 when the Oscar nominees would be out to find out whether or not Court finds a place in the Foreign Film Category, here’s an all you need to know about the film that needs to be watched- 
 
Plot: As the name suggests, Court is centred on a court case against a singer-activist accused of assisting a sewer worker’s suicide. The accused in question also has a reputation of being a thorn in the authorities’ side in the past. Through the case, the film has gives us an insight into the contrasting lives led by the prosecution, defense, judge and finally, the accused. 
 
Critical acclaim: Court released across India on the 17th of April and gained immense critical acclaim, mainly due to its sharp-eyed, satirical screenplay and its painstaking detailing. It recently released in the United States, as well where too critics heaped praise on how the movie lays bare the workings of the Indian bureaucracy, 
Awards: As of now, Court has more than 20 awards to its credit, including Best Feature Film at the 62nd Indian National Film Awards this March, the Lion Of The Future and Best Film in the Orrizonti category at last year's Venice International Film Festival. Court thus also holds the record of being an Indian film with the maximum number of awards. 
 
Reaction: Soon after the news broke, the director-producer duo who were in Japan sent across their statement over Whatsapp describing their happiness. It reads as follows- 
“At every juncture of the film's journey, we have felt that is has given us more than we could ever imagine. Once again, this has come as a genuine surprise to both Vivek and me. Ever since we started making the film, we kept our expectations low. Especially in this case, since these results tend to be so unpredictable, it just felt like a wise thing to not expect too much. Now that it has actually happened, we would like to thanks the jury for their decision and everyone who has supported the film so far." 
 
A place in history: If Court does manage to garner a nomination in the Foreign Films category at the 88th Academy Awards (of which it has a really good chance), it’ll go down in history as the fourth Indian film to have attained that honour, after Mother India (1957), Salaam Bombay! (1988), and Lagaan (2001). 
And, if it does manage to win an Oscar in the Foreign Film Category, it’ll be the first Indian film to do so. 
 
The 88th Academy Awards are slated to take place on 28th February, 2016.

All you need to know about Court, India’s entry for the Oscars

​The Oscar fights never go out of fashion in India. We have not made our mark there yet in spite of many Indian connections with movies like Life of Pi and <keyword id="32892" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Slumdog-Millionaire">Slumdog Millionaire</keyword>. But when it comes to selecting India’s official entry for the Foreign Language Film category at the <keyword id="9344" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Academy-Awards">Academy Awards</keyword>, the heat is full on. This time, there were as many as 22 contenders and some entries like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, English Vinglish, Celluloid, Shabdo, Ship of Theseus and <keyword id="6354603" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Kamal-Haasan">Kamal Haasan</keyword>’s Vishwaroopam created a lot of buzz. But the final battle royal seemed to have boiled down to just two – Mumbaikar <keyword id="1539946" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ritesh-Batra">Ritesh Batra</keyword>’s <keyword id="1678680" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="The-Lunchbox">The Lunchbox</keyword> and Goa-born <keyword id="1602536" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gyan-Correa">Gyan Correa</keyword>’s <keyword id="1602537" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="The-Good-Road">The Good Road</keyword>. However, The Lunchbox lost to The Good Road, which earlier bagged the national award for the best Gujarati feature film. Correa’s flick was picked by a 19-member jury, appointed by the <keyword id="291689" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Film-Federation-of-India">Film Federation of India</keyword> (FFI).

But it goes to show, why we completely lack the understanding to make films that can travel across borders… I hope and pray I am wrong and it actually is a film that knocks the socks off everyone… We should then make a clean policy, you want to send the best film, then send the national award winner. Or send the one most likely to win... Anyway, disappointment and anger aside… let’s go back to make cinema…

The Good Road and The Lunchbox: Head-to-head 
Some industry experts are not too enthusiastic and feel that The Lunchbox would have been a better Oscar choice for several reasons. So here is a head-to-head for our readers, along with some lesser-known facts. 
 
Auteur cinema is gaining prominence. Written by Correa himself, The Good Road is a documentary-style collage of stories woven around the highway where the protagonists lose their way, struggle on their personal quests and evolve in a way that touches the heart. The Lunchbox, on the other hand, brings to life the ever-present Mumbai dabbawalas (tiffin carriers) and a bitter-sweet story of bonding that starts with a misplaced lunchbox (according to a Harvard University study, the delivery system is so excellent that just one in a million lunch boxes will go to a wrong address). Each film reflects its director’s vision instead treading the beaten path. 
 
Both Correa and Batra did it hands-on. It was real-life research for both the directors. Correa got into a truck and went on a journey, getting to the core of things before he created his story. Batra worked as a <keyword id="415857" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dabbawala">dabbawala</keyword> for a week to get the hang of it. 
 
But they come from different industries. That’s right. Batra studied Economics and worked as a consultant for Deloitte. He left the job to join the Graduate Film Program at New York University, but dropped out after a year and a half due to fund crunch. Correa is from the advertising space but decided to have a go at film-making. 
 
In spite of debacle, The Lunchbox gets a bite of the global pie. According to media reports, it has already been sold to 30 different territories globally and could be the first Indian film with 3 foreign producers – ASAP Films of France, Rohfilm of Germany and Cinemosaic of America, along with <keyword id="66984" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="NFDC">NFDC</keyword>, Sikhya <keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="entertainment">Entertainment</keyword>, Dharma Productions and DAR Films from India. It can also be the first Indian movie to be released across 100 screens in Germany. Incidentally, the film was made on a shoestring budget of $1.5 million. On the other hand, NFDC produced The Good Road, but it doesn’t have an <keyword id="1878880" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="American-distributor">American distributor</keyword> yet. 
 
But what about Oscar compatibility? The Lunchbox might have got a favourable push at the Oscars, had it been chosen. For one, <keyword id="16207" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Irrfan-Khan">Irrfan Khan</keyword> is a familiar name (his roles in The Warrior, Mighty Heart, Slumdog Millionaire and The Amazing Spider-man certainly helped) and the movie has already received some rev reviews at Cannes, Telluride, Toronto and India. Moreover, <keyword id="6411012" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sony-Pictures">Sony Pictures</keyword> Classics will be distributing the film in the US and that could have been another plus. The Good Road has one Oscar connection, though. Its sound designer Resul Pookutty has already won an Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire in 2009. 
 
Bottom line: Till date, only three <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> movies made it to the nomination stage of the Oscar. These include Mehboob Khan’s Mother India (1957), <keyword id="7999" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mira-Nair">Mira Nair</keyword>’s Salaam Bombay (1988) and <keyword id="17233" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ashutosh-Gowariker">Ashutosh Gowariker</keyword>’s Lagaan (2001). The Good Road belongs to the art house pack, but going by the poor track record of other ‘arty’ films (Salim Ahamed’s Abu, Son of Adam in 2011, <keyword id="82569" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Anusha-Rizvi">Anusha Rizvi</keyword>’s Peepli Live in 2010 and <keyword id="33044" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Kalpana-Lajmi">Kalpana Lajmi</keyword>’s Rudaali in 1993), will Gollywood’s (a concoction of Gujarat and Bollywood) tryst with Oscar produce something more fruitful this time? Also, will it be possible for the Lunchbox team to push the movie at the Oscars even without the government’s backing? Let us wait and watch how ‘independent’ our independent cinema is in reality.
