Warming of groundwater can adversely impact ecosystems relying on them, they said. "Rivers rely on groundwater to keep flowing during dry times. Warm waters hold less dissolved oxygen," explained study co-author Gabriel Rau from the University of Newcastle, UK. Based on how heat spreads in water, the researchers modelled current groundwater temperatures and also projected changes between 2000-2100 around the world. Groundwater is present beneath the Earth's surface in pore spaces in rocks and soils. "We show that groundwater at the depth of the water table (excluding permafrost regions) is conservatively projected to warm on average by 2.1 degrees Celsius between 2000 and 2100 under a medium emissions (scenario)," the authors wrote in the study published in the journal Nature Geoscience. Under this scenario, emissions trends do not markedly change from historical patterns. The model, however, showed that under a high-emissions scenario, or fossil fuel-driven development, the groundwater temperature could rise by 3.5 degrees Celsius. The warming of groundwater can be a cause for concern, although it depends on whether the climate change issue can be mitigated by cutting down greenhouse gas emissions, the researchers said. Warmer groundwater can also impact water quality by affecting its chemistry and microbiology, they said. "If temperatures increase, we may see significant impacts to our local aquatic animals, including their spawning processes which will impact industries and communities that are reliant on these ecosystems," said co-author Dylan Irvine, Charles Darwin University, Australia.

The report comes during an especially turbulent time for Boeing after a door plug on one of its 737 Max 9 planes <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alaska-airlines-boeing-flight-blowout-nstb-recovers-cellphones-door-plug-2024-1">blew off in the middle of an Alaska Airlines flight</a>. A National Transportation Safety Board preliminary report recently determined bolts that would have held the door in place weren't attached before the plane took off on January 5 — or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alaska-airlines-boeing-737-blowout-missing-bolts-ntsb-investigation-2024-2">before it was even delivered by Boeing.</a>From March 2023 to February 2024, the FAA's expert panel of investigators reviewed Boeing documents, visited its facilities, and interviewed employees at all levels to determine the strength of the company's safety culture. They focused specifically on the engineering employees whose job it is to make sure the company is complying with FAA guidelines under an agreement that allows Boeing to self-certify its own aircraft, which the FAA granted in 2009.Here are just a few of the more damning findings outlined in the FAA's report.<h2>Major faults in Boeing's safety management systems, according to the FAA:</h2><ul><li>The same bosses in charge of employees' salaries were also overseeing those staffers' safety concerns, creating a culture where the employees hesitated to speak up for fear of retaliation, the panel found.</li><li>The expert panel found that many of Boeing's employees, at all levels of the company, did not have a clear understanding of the company's safety culture efforts and procedures, nor did they grasp their purpose. Staff also did not know their role in the safety management systems, and were skeptical of the systems' lasting power.</li><li>The panel said it could not pinpoint a consistent and clear process for employees to report safety concerns. Not only did employees not understand how and when to use the proper reporting channels, but they also chose not to use them altogether. Instead, they simply brought their concerns to their managers, which doesn't allow for a systematic way to address and fix the concerns.</li><li>The experts found Boeing's documentation of its safety management systems overly complex and constantly changing, which created a culture of confusion among the employees.</li><li>Boeing has not been successful at retaining key staff members who oversee the self-certification process, and has not been filling open roles quickly enough, the panel said.</li></ul>The report orders Boeing to come up with an action plan within the next six months to "comprehensively address each recommendation."The FAA made 53 total recommendations for how the company should not just improve its lackluster safety practices, but bring them up to the legal requirement.In a statement sent to Business Insider, Boeing said that it has implemented a number of "fundamental changes" since 2019 "to strengthen product safety," but added that "There is more work to do.""We will carefully review the panel's assessment and learn from their findings, as we continue our comprehensive efforts to improve our safety and quality programs," the statement continued.

"We had extensive deliberation and the final conclusion was that Molnupiravir has certain risks that warrant caution in its use. Experts present in the meeting opined that there is a rampant and irrational use of Molnupiravir. Efforts should be made to restrict its use as known and unknown harms far outweigh its claimed benefit," he said on Wednesday. "The currently available synthesised evidence was reviewed and the members unanimously agreed that it does not merit the inclusion of Molnupuravir in the national treatment guidelines for COVID-19," Bhargava said. The emerging evidence will constantly be reviewed, he added. "And lastly it was further highlighted the current clinical window of application appears extremely narrow for Molnupiravir with relevance only to the following --elderly, unvaccinated, with other comorbidities. ICMR experts reject inclusion of Molnupiravir in COVID-19 treatment guidelines for fourth time citing safety concerns

In one case, the makers of the Titanic followed and even went beyond the safety regulations at the time the ocean liner was built — it was the safety regulations that fell short. In another, OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush <a href="https://www.insider.com/missing-titanic-sub-ceo-told-reporter-safety-pure-waste-2023-6">pushed back</a> on <a href="https://www.insider.com/submersible-expert-oceangate-ceo-hull-defect-will-only-get-worse-2023-6">warnings</a> his <a href="https://www.insider.com/submersible-expert-worried-oceangate-stockton-rush-spurred-on-by-criticism-2023-6">submersible might not be safe</a> and OceanGate <a href="https://www.insider.com/lost-titanic-sub-maker-innovation-vessel-not-classed-industry-standards-2023-6">didn't have the sub classed</a> before it started taking passengers to see Titanic's wreckage — <a href="https://www.insider.com/titanic-titan-sub-5-key-mistakes-lead-up-catastrophic-implosion-2023-6">to a tragic result</a>. In fact, it was made to withstand flooding in multiple compartments, <a href="https://www.vox.com/videos/23587972/titanic-lifeboats-disaster-safety-regulation-solas">Vox reported</a>. But its creators never prepared for the extent of damage and resulting flooding caused by that fateful iceberg, a rare sideswipe collision that cut across multiple compartments and flooded the ship. And while the number of lifeboats aboard the ship was far too few to suitably fit all passengers, they weren't supposed to. The lifeboats were meant to be ferries to other nearby vessels where passengers could go if they had to flee the water-logged Titanic while it floated. The Titanic actually had more lifeboats than was required by — admittedly substandard — safety regulations at the time. <a href="https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/Vict/57-58/60/contents/enacted">The Merchant Shipping Act of 1894</a> called for all ships weighing more than 10,000 to carry at least 16 lifeboats.The Titanic, which weighed a whopping 45,000 tons and made its fateful maiden voyage in 1912, carried 20. Rush's Titan, on the other hand, wasn't certified to check if it was following guidelines for safe submersibles. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/titan-sub-red-flags-safety-likely-feature-investigation-oceangate-2023-6">As Insider previously reported</a>, submersible experts raised plenty of red flags about the build of the Titan sub before it embarked on its recent mission to the Titanic. In 2018, former OcenGate employee David Lochridge sued the company over concerns with the sub, which was not independently certified. He alleged it needed more testing. He <a href="https://www.insider.com/lost-titanic-sub-maker-oceangate-warned-hull-safety-2018-2023-6" rel="">also warned</a> the company about inadequate "quality control and safety" protocols. He said Rush asked him to carry out a quality inspection of the sub.Rush, in his own words, pushed back on safety regulations, saying they stifled innovation and that at a certain point, "safety is just pure waste." OceanGate insisted on its website that although the sub wasn't classed, it was still safe.OceanGate didn't respond to Insider's request for comment.Rush's cofounder on Friday <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/oceangate-co-founder-defends-titan-submersible-safety-record-2023-6">defended Rush</a> and said that any submersible is prone to risk at that level of the ocean.

The guidance has led to <a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/05/18/997638745/as-mask-mandates-disappear-business-owners-left-to-make-and-enforce-their-own-ru">confusion for US businesses</a>, a call to clarify "vague language" <a href="https://www.aiha.org/press/workplace-health-and-safety-organizations-urgent-clarification-needed-on-cdc-guidance-for-fully-vaccinated-people">from the American Industrial Hygiene Association</a>, and <a href="https://www.nationalnursesunited.org/nnu-urges-cdc-to-revise-its-mask-guidance">a strong condemnation</a> from National Nurses United (NNU)."This dangerous guidance," NNU said in a statement, "puts nurses, other essential workers, children, and medically vulnerable people at risk." Instead of muddled recommendations from the CDC, America's workers and employers need uniform, enforceable protections against COVID-19. It's time to hear from the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). After months of delay, OSHA finally drafted a <a href="https://oshadefensereport.com/2021/04/27/fed-oshas-covid-19-emergency-temporary-standards-officially-submitted-to-omb-for-final-approval/">COVID-19 Emergency Temporary Standard</a> in late April, submitting it to the Office of Management and Budget for final review. The budget agency must approve this life-saving rule as soon as possible. The US is one of the most vaccinated countries in the world. But <a href="https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#vaccinations">only 39%</a> of Americans are fully vaccinated, and barely half have had one dose - which means we are not even close to herd immunity.After months of isolation and nearly 600,000 deaths, we're all eager to return to some kind of normalcy. But we can't return to normal or fully rebuild our economy until our workplaces are safe. Right now, workers know that's not the case. <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-other-reason-the-labor-force-is-shrunken-fear-of-covid-19-11618163017">A recent US Census survey</a> found that more than 4.2 million workers are not going back to work due to fear of getting or spreading COVID-19. That accounts for half of the 8.4 million jobs that have gone unfilled since the start of the pandemic. <h2>Workers need clear guidelines for protection</h2>Workers' fears are well founded, based on research from <a href="https://www.claimsjournal.com/news/national/2021/03/09/302453.htm">California</a>, <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/ajim.23227">Massachusetts</a> and <a href="https://www.iwh.on.ca/newsletters/at-work/101/what-research-can-do-estimating-role-of-workplaces-in-covid-19-transmissions">Ontario. </a>Frontline workers who are exposed on the job are more likely than others to get infected and account for a significant share of COVID-19 illnesses and fatalities. A disproportionate number of those in harm's way are Black and brown workers, <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/covid-data/investigations-discovery/hospitalization-death-by-race-ethnicity.html">who have suffered higher rates of illness and death</a> during the pandemic. Absent a clear workplace standard from OSHA, the confusing CDC guidance creates new problems for frontline workers. They'll now face increased exposure to unmasked people who may or may not be vaccinated. How are workers supposed to know which is which? To get our economy up and running again, workers and businesses need to be sure our workplaces are as safe as possible. OSHA's Emergency Temporary Standard, which is still pending is the first step towards creating permanent rules to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. The contents of the Standard are not public during the review, however, it is expected to be consistent with <a href="https://www.osha.gov/coronavirus/safework">voluntary guidance issued in January</a>. If so, every employer will be required to have a COVID-19 prevention plan, with full input from workers.Having workers involved in every step of the process is crucial. Workers know where the hazards are in their workplaces and how to reduce or eliminate them. Any plan to confront the spread of infectious disease - or any other occupational risk - that does not give workers a seat at the table will not succeed. A strong COVID-19 safety rule, backed by rigorous enforcement, will save workers' lives. Businesses will have an easier time finding people to fill key positions and save money on medical costs. COVID-19, like other preventable hazards, is very expensive. A mild case of coronavirus <a href="https://www.claimsjournal.com/news/national/2021/03/09/302453.htm">can cost an employer $4,300 for workers' compensation claims; a serious case, more than $1 million. </a>Those of us who were able to stay at home during the pandemic relied on frontline workers to keep our lights on and our refrigerators full - and to take care of us when we got sick. A worker-centered, enforceable COVID-19 safety standard is the least we can do for all of them - and for millions of people who are justifiably hesitant to return to unprotected workplaces. For the health and sanity of workers, the federal government needs to stop issuing head-scratching COVID work guidelines

<ul><li>The Indian government has issued a directive mandating <keyword id="201519" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="vpn" source="Orion">VPN</keyword> service providers to retain user data.</li><li>India currently has over 270 million <keyword id="13886361" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vpn-users" source="Orion">VPN users</keyword>, a majority of whom use it to connect to their company network.</li><li>VPN service providers may leave India as it’s not possible to comply with the government’s directive.</li></ul>The Indian government <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/it-ministry-orders-vpn-providers-to-store-user-data-for-five-years-tech-news/articleshow/91334830.cms">released new guidelines</a> on April 28 directing companies offering virtual private network (VPN) services in the country to record and store the details of their users. The <a href="https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1820904">directive</a> was issued by the country’s cyber watchdog - the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). The new guidelines come into effect after 60 days of issue, which is around June end. The directive has come under criticism from various sections of society, including <keyword id="1601135" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vpn-providers" source="Orion">VPN providers</keyword>, consumers and rights activists. The Internet Freedom Foundation <a href="https://internetfreedom.in/cert-in-guidelines-on-cybersecurity-an-explainer/">said</a>, “The directions were released by CERT-In without any public consultation with technology and cyber security experts, which has led to the inclusion of multiple unwarranted provisions.” <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="What is the directive from the Indian government?" comment="subhead" text="What is the directive from the Indian government?">What is the directive from the Indian government?</cmsannotation> The directive issued by the government mandates VPN providers to maintain the following data as part of the know your customer (KYC) policy for a period of five years – <ul><li>Validated name of subscribers/customers</li><li>Period of hire</li><li>IPs allotted to the user</li><li>Email address, IP address and time stamp used at the time of registration.</li><li>Purpose of hiring services</li><li>Validated address and contact numbers</li><li>Ownership pattern of the subscribers</li></ul>Essentially, this will eliminate one of the major benefits and use cases of VPN – anonymity. According to the directive, CERT-In can at any time ask these service providers to furnish this data. A failure to furnish the data will result in punitive action under the IT Act, 2000 and other applicable laws. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Impact on users" comment="subhead" text="Impact on users">Impact on users</cmsannotation> In addition to removing anonymity, this may have a much larger impact on the country. According to a VPN adoption Index maintained by AtlasVPN, India recorded over 270 million VPN users in 2021, which is around 20% of the population. This number has likely increased by now. The increase in VPN users in the country has been due to an increase in people working from home due to the pandemic. There are several uses of VPN, including employees using it to connect to company networks securely while working from home, accessing geo-restricted content or simply staying anonymous. VPN companies are against the directive from the government as recording user data goes against the main principles of VPN as they are designed to protect user privacy. NordVPN, one of the largest VPN service providers in the world, is <a href="https://entrackr.com/2022/05/exclusive-nord-vpn-may-pull-servers-from-india-following-it-ministry-order/?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=exclusive-nord-vpn-may-pull-servers-from-india-following-it-ministry-order">reportedly</a> considering pulling its servers out of India in response to the directive from the government. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="VPN service providers may have to leave the country" comment="subhead" text="VPN service providers may have to leave the country">VPN service providers may have to leave the country</cmsannotation> “We are committed to protecting the privacy of our customers therefore, we may remove our servers from India if no other options are left,” Patricija Cerniauskaite, an official from NordVPN told Entrackr. The company reportedly has 28 servers in the country, which cater to both Indian and international users. “PureVPN is a no-log VPN, user anonymity and security is a central priority but if that is compromised by this policy then we will have to consider our position in India,” Uzair Gadit, chief executive officer of PureVPN told Business Insider India in a statement. “PureVPN stores no identifiable information, nor does it record or store user activity so this presents a significant risk for our users. More widely, this will impact the wider VPN industry,” Gadit added. “VPNs are critical for user safety and the preservation of user's right to online privacy and are fundamentally opposed to any efforts to undermine such technologies,” ExpressVPN said in a statement to <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/cons-products/electronics/uncert-in-times-for-vpn-services-providers-in-india/articleshow/91454501.cms">Economic Times</a>. Indian government's VPN guidelines will impact over 270 million users as VPN providers have no option but to leave the country

Since Hamas militants launched a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/11-israel-hamas-dramatic-images-surprise-attack-israel-2023-10?r=US&amp;IR=T">surprise attack</a> Saturday from the Gaza Strip into Israel by paragliders, boats, and other vehicles, posts sharing false and misleading information continue to circulate on the platform. One video, still making the rounds on X at the time of writing, shows children in cages and has been shared by multiple accounts."Israeli kids being held in cages by Hamas Terrorists," a caption on the <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/drmonika_langeh/status/1711031781099786721?s=20">video</a>, viewed more than 359,000 times, said. The post did not have a Community Note underneath at the time of writing to clarify that the video was not recent, nor did two other posts that shared the video.A YouTube link posted by another user showed the video dated back to at least 2020, although the streaming platform has since removed that link for violating its community guidelines.BBC Verify journalist Shayan Sardarizadeh, who reports on misinformation, <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/Shayan86/status/1710707264988868848?s=20">debunked</a> several misleading posts on X, which have since been appended with Community Notes to clarify they are inaccurate. Another posted photos of a fireworks display in Algeria and claimed it was Israel striking Hamas. Another <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/rose_k01/status/1711234393489227916?s=20">video</a> shared on X Sunday shows a man with a baby alongside a caption that said it's a "Hamas terrorist with a kidnapped Jewish baby girl in Gaza." The post now has a Community Note that says the video was posted a month before the attack on Saturday, but it still remains on the platform. Ben Goggin, deputy tech editor at NBC News, <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/BenjaminGoggin/status/1711862096655241725?s=20">said</a> Monday that he reviewed 120 posts on X that shared fake news. "Only 8% had community notes, 26% had unpublished notes, and 66% had neither," he wrote.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-ceo-elon-musk">Elon Musk</a> laid off between five and 10 trust and safety workers in September, Insider's Kali Hays <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-twitter-layoffs-hit-trust-and-safety-workers-again-2023-9?r=US&amp;IR=T">reported last month</a>, after he cut hundreds of employees working in that department when he took over X, previously known as Twitter. Large language models like the ones powering <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chatgpt-changed-everything-and-was-a-black-swan-event-2023-5">ChatGPT, Bard, and Anthropic's Claude</a> are extensively moderated by tech companies. The models are fitted with wide-ranging guardrails to ensure they can't be used for nefarious means, such as instructing users how to make a bomb or writing pages of hate speech.In a <a href="https://llm-attacks.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report released on Thursday</a>, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and the Center for A.I. Safety in San Francisco said they had found ways to bypass these guardrails.The researchers found they could use jailbreaks they'd developed for open-source systems to target mainstream and closed AI systems.
