Plus, if you can't get outside, you can even find many of the same health benefits on a stationary bike indoors. </p><p>Here are five major health benefits of cycling and how to bike safely. </p><h2><strong>Cycling boosts cardiovascular fitness </strong></h2><p>The <a href="https://health.gov/sites/default/files/2019-10/PAG_ExecutiveSummary.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">U.S. Department of Health and Human Services</a> recommends that adults do 150 to 300 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity. Cycling is one way to get aerobic exercise — also known as <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-often-should-you-do-cardio" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cardio</a> — which gets your heart and lungs working. </p> <p>For example, a large 2017 <a href="https://www.bmj.com/content/357/bmj.j1456" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> looked at the benefits of "active commuting" and found that cycling to work was associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and death. In fact, the health benefits of cycling to work may be even greater than the <a href="https://www.insider.com/benefits-of-walking" target="_blank" rel="noopener">benefits of walking</a> to work.  </p><h2><strong>Cycling can help you lose weight </strong></h2> <p>Moderate or vigorous aerobic activity like cycling can help you lose weight. A 2019 <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/335088317_Health_Benefits_of_Indoor_Cycling_A_Systematic_Review" target="_blank" rel="noopener">research review</a> found that indoor cycling, when combined with healthy eating practices, was recommended to help people lose weight, reduce blood pressure, and improve lipid profile. </p><p>The amount of calories cycling burns depends on how hard you're working. For example, a 185-pound person can burn the following <a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/diet-and-weight-loss/calories-burned-in-30-minutes-of-leisure-and-routine-activities" target="_blank" rel="noopener">number</a> of calories per hour:</p><ul><li><strong>Walking</strong> (at a 15-minute-per-mile pace): 400 calories burned</li><li><strong>Hiking</strong>: 532 calories burned</li><li><strong>Moderate stationary cycling</strong>: 622 calories burned</li><li><strong>Light outdoor bicycling</strong> (at a 12 to 13.9 mph pace): 710 calories burned</li><li><strong>Mountain biking or BMX</strong>: 754 calories burned</li><li><strong>Running</strong>: (at a 11.5-minute-per-mile pace): 800 calories burned</li><li><strong>Moderate outdoor bicycling</strong> (at a 14-15.9 mph pace): 888 calories burned</li><li><strong>Vigorous stationary cycling:</strong> 932 calories burned</li><li><strong>Vigorous outdoor bicycling</strong> (at a 16 to 19 mph pace): 1,066 calories burned</li></ul><h2><strong>Cycling is easy on the joints </strong></h2><p>Because cycling is a low-impact activity, it's easy on the joints — even easier than walking. </p><p>"When we walk, and when our foot hits the ground, because of gravity, we hit with two to four times our body weight," says <a href="https://revolutionsinfitness.com/team/#curtis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Curtis Cramblett</a>, a licensed physical therapist and certified cycling coach, strength and conditioning coach, and bike fitting educator. </p><p>On a bike, there is still some force on the joints, depending on how hard you're pushing on the pedals, but cycling does not deliver the compressive force that walking does, Cramblett says. This makes it suitable for people who may have injuries, such as a knee or hip replacement, or a lower back problem. </p><p>"Because it's low impact and because you're sitting on a saddle, it can be as gentle as you like," Cramblett says. </p><h2><strong>Cycling improves balance and coordination</strong></h2> <p>A small 2013 <a href="https://www.hindawi.com/journals/jeph/2013/686412/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> found that bicycling can improve balance and even help prevent falls for older adults. However, these benefits likely apply only to cycling outdoors, and not for indoor stationary cycling. </p><p>"When you're trying to keep a bike upright, you're working on balance," Cramblett says. That's why cycling is often recommended for people with neurological disorders to train balance and coordination. In fact, a small 2015 <a href="https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/jpts/27/11/27_jpts-2015-576/_article" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> found that stationary cycling can improve balance in <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-recover-from-a-stroke" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stroke</a> patients. </p><p>"Once you learn to ride a bike, you can always do it. It really brings back some of the coordination that we learned as a kid around balance," Cramblett says. </p><h2><strong>Cycling offers mental health benefits</strong></h2> <p>It is <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5934999/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">well-proven</a> that exercise — such as cycling — can improve cognitive functioning, reduce depression, and enhance overall well-being. </p><p>Plus, when you ride a bike outdoors, it may enhance these benefits. A 2013 <a href="https://extremephysiolmed.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/2046-7648-2-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">research review</a> found that exercising in natural environments provides greater mental health benefits than indoor exercise does. </p><p>The most important benefit of cycling might be the same one you appreciated as a kid. "Think about the first couple of times you were on a bike: the freedom, the joy, the play, the smile, the laughter — there's an emotion that comes into that old memory," Cramblett says. </p><h2><strong>How to bike safely </strong></h2><p>For beginners, Cramblett recommends starting out slow — maybe once or twice a week for 15 or 20 minutes. </p><p>"Then you can work your way up, giving your tissues, your tendons, your muscles, your joints, an opportunity to get used to the activity," he says. People often jump into activities too fast and do too much, but that can cause injury and make it a chore rather than something you enjoy, he says. </p><p>Comfort is also important. If the position of your saddle or handlebars is off, "it puts undue stress on your joints," Cramblett says. Getting your bike professionally fitted can prevent pain and injury, and this applies to both outdoor bikes and stationary bikes.</p><p>If you're cycling outdoors, here's how to do it safely: </p><ol><li><strong> Light yourself up, no matter what time of day. </strong>Cramblett cautions against beginners riding at night, but he recommends "lighting yourself up like a Christmas tree," even in broad daylight. Blinking lights raise your visibility, so cars can see you from farther away, Cramblett says. </li><li><strong> Ride defensively. </strong>It's safest to assume that a car near you doesn't see you and might turn in front of you. "Over-communicate if you're on the bike, and use your hand signals," Cramblett says. </li><li><strong> Pick your streets. </strong>If you're new to cycling, avoid streets with heavy traffic and no bike lanes. "Now, more and more places have green lanes that are nice and wide, and cars can see there's a bike," Cramblett says.</li><li><strong> Learn the ropes. </strong>The <a href="https://www.bikeleague.org/ridesmart" target="_blank" rel="noopener">League of American Bicyclists</a> offers classes on how to ride safely with traffic, as well as how to improve skills.  </li><li><strong> Always wear a helmet. </strong>You might think you don't need a helmet if you're just going on a leisurely ride, but a large 2017 <a href="https://academic.oup.com/ije/article/46/1/278/2617198" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> found that helmets reduced the risk of serious head injury by 69%.</li></ol><h2><strong>Takeaways </strong></h2><p>Whether you head outdoors or use a stationary bike at home, you should do what works for you. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Chicago's cycling community has exploded in recent years, and the city plans to add 150 more miles of lanes to accommodate this growth.</li><li>However, the cycling boom has come with an increase in accidents and a spotlight on the lack of equal access between neighborhoods.</li><li>These initiatives are working in tandem to connect communities that were historically underserved and overlooked by city planners.</li></ul><p>Chicago has always been one of the most popular cycling cities in the country. However, it has not always been considered among the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bike-safety-policy-bicyclists-killed-streets-asking-congress-for-help-2023-4?_gl=1*16avjdz*_ga*MTY2OTYzOTU1Mi4xNjM5NTgwNzc4*_ga_E21CV80ZCZ*MTY4NzM3MzI4MC4yNjkuMS4xNjg3Mzc1Mjc2LjU0LjAuMA..">safest</a> US cities to bike in, nor among the most equitable, particularly on the South and West sides of the city. Just along Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago's "Hipster Highway," there have been 50 <a href="https://blockclubchicago.org/2022/11/29/life-and-death-in-chicagos-most-dangerous-bike-lane/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported crashes</a> and three deaths since 2020 due to an uptick in traffic, neighborhood density, and reckless driving.</p><p>A recent study found that on average, Chicago's white neighborhoods had 50% more <a href="https://grist.org/cities/black-chicago-biking-disparities-infrastructure/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bike lanes</a> than Black neighborhoods. In a September 2021 study, Jesus Barajas, an assistant professor of environmental science and policy at the University of California, Davis, found that from 2017 to 2019, cyclists riding in Chicago's Black neighborhoods were eight times <a href="https://jmbarajas.com/publication/biking-where-black/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">as likely</a> to be ticketed by police as those riding in white neighborhoods.</p><p>As a result, initiatives are underway to make cycling safer, more equitable, and fun for all Chicagoans.</p><h2>Chicago cycling boom prompts changes in strategy</h2><p>According to the Active Transportation Alliance, Chicago has experienced huge <a href="https://activetrans.org/busreports/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/2020regionalmodesharereport.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">growth in bicycle commuting</a> over the years, going from about 2,000 commuters in 1980 to nearly 24,000 commuters in 2018. Furthermore, Chicago saw a 34% <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-09-23/how-the-coronavirus-affected-biking-in-u-s-cities" target="_blank" rel="noopener">increase</a> in cycling amid the pandemic, and cycling continues to remain popular in the city, with<a href="https://bikethedrive.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> over 16,500</a> riders having attended the 21st Annual Fifth Third Bike the Drive in 2022.</p><p>The new, ambitious <a href="https://www.chicago.gov/content/dam/city/depts/cdot/bike/2023/2023_Chicago%20Cycling%20Update.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chicago Cycling Strategy</a> from the Chicago Department of Transportation, worth over $17 million, includes expanding Chicago's bike network by designing and implementing 150 miles of low-stress bikeways over the next several years.</p><p>"CDOT recognizes that neighborhoods will not experience the vast benefits of biking until people have safe and convenient access to the places they need and want to go," Gia Biagi, CDOT's commissioner, said. "This approach has already been implemented in several West-side communities, where CDOT was able to triple the mileage of bikeways in Belmont Cragin and North Lawndale in just two years."</p><p>But while residents feel the strategy is a step in the right direction, some point out that it's going to take more than an ambitious plan from the city to make cycling more equitable.</p><p>"I think it's great that CDOT wants to engage the communities in which they are working for input, even calling themselves out for being too top-down in the past," Kevin Womac, the owner of Boulevard Bikes in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood, said. "But it's also about changing attitudes and becoming more compassionate. Bikes are seen as not cool by too many folks. Cycling is seen as something rich white folks do on the weekend. And if you're cycling in the city as a commuter, you must be a loser/too cheap to buy a car. "I love cycling and use it as an escape," a 30-year-old Black cyclist who asked to remain anonymous said. "But I have to be careful when I'm out and very aware of my surroundings. It's always good to be aware of who and what is around you, in case you need an exit plan. Ride routes you know you'll be seen or heard if there's any trouble."</p><p>A 28-year-old Black cyclist agreed, adding: "Ride only in parts of the city you're familiar with. If you have friends that ride, ride together, if you have family members that are willing to ride, especially older ones, ride with them. And always share your location."</p><p>"I rarely see Black folks riding on our trails here," the 30-year-old cyclist added. Both cyclists asked to remain anonymous to maintain the privacy of their personal bike routes. Their identities are known to Insider.</p><h2>Bike giveaways to eligible residents encourage lifestyle change</h2><p>That said, data indicates that demand for bikes and adoption of the cycling lifestyle is expanding to more demographics in more regions of the city.</p><p>Earlier in the pandemic, Chicago launched a program to give away <a href="https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/sites/bike-chicago/home.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">5,000 bikes to eligible Chicago residents by 2026</a>.</p><p>"More than 19,000 residents applied to the Bike Chicago program, demonstrating a clear demand for bikes and interest in cycling in every Chicago neighborhood, but a majority of applications having come from areas where residents face higher mobility hardship in Chicago," Biagi said. "CDOT has given away nearly 1,000 free bicycles and safety equipment already."</p><p>Furthermore, initiatives such as <a href="https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/depts/cdot/supp_info/safe-ambassadors.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Learn To Ride</a> also help encourage new cyclists to adopt biking as a lifestyle by providing free classes every summer for both adults and children to learn how to ride. Streets Are For Everybody ambassadors provide education and outreach to program participants. Junior ambassadors engage with 6- to 12-year-olds throughout the city at camps and community events, teaching kids biking and safety skills.</p><h2>Green Corps provides an outlet for sustainable action</h2><p>These programs have an overall positive impact on the community beyond cycling itself. Green Corps is a summer jobs program that connects Chicago youth with career and service opportunities in sustainability, which includes cycling. Green Corps participants have helped to assemble the bikes in the Bike Chicago program. </p><p>Womac said, "I understand that the bikes are being assembled by young mechanics at the bike co-op Working Bikes in Bridgeport. Here on the north side, West Town Bikes is also training 'at-risk youth' how to work on bikes and how to work in a shop with others. I know many alumni have gotten jobs maintaining the Divvy fleet, which is just about the best example of getting the community involved."</p><h2>The future of Chicago cycling relies on an attitude shift</h2><p>The success and longevity of these programs will rely on not only funding — whether it's keeping up with demand from the Bike Chicago program or meeting the initiatives laid out in the Chicago Cycling Strategy — but also overall support. </p><p>"The strategy is full of things to spend money on," Womac said. "These efforts are great things to talk about and lobby money for, but an attitude adjustment needs to happen across the whole country to really make cycling safer and more equitable."</p>

I define style as the expression of your preferences and creativity through your clothes. It boils down to a simple question: do you like it, or do you not?</span></p><p><span>That sounds simple, but adopting that definition of fashion often means learning new skills, and addressing a lifetime of discomfort or even trauma around clothing. They decide to clean out their closets, but then they feel they have nothing to wear and panic, buying more clothes.</span></p><p><span>I aim to help people break that cycle and create lasting relationships with all their clothes. Often, you can reimagine and breathe life into items you already have without needing to buy new clothes. When there are gaps in your closet, I always recommend </span><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/classic-thrift-stores-worse-secondhand-clothing-market-popular-2024-3"><span>shopping secondhand</span></a><span> first.</span></p><h2 id="39f9d223-1a01-47c1-bee4-d8510c5a1c84"><span>Parents should have fun and experiment with fashion</span></h2><p><span>Fashion is very personal. But over time, negative comments about what we wear can break our trust in ourselves. That's why it's so important to let kids — especially teenagers — experiment with their clothes. It's one of the safest ways they have to show their autonomy.</span></p><p><span>I work with people of all ages and genders, but many of my </span><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hiring-postpartum-stylist-helped-me-find-identity-as-a-mom-2023-10"><span>clients are moms</span></a><span>. I hope they can connect with the fun in fashion, and model that for their kids. Don't worry about finding clothes that shrink your body. Ditch the fear and expectation that so many people carry around fashion. Instead, experiment and show your personality through your clothing.</span></p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A recent study found that drivers viewed cyclists wearing a helmet or safety vest as "less human."</li><li>This research could add fuel to the debate over bike helmet mandates in the US.</li></ul><p>Anyone who's bicycled on car-dominated streets knows how unwelcome drivers can make them feel. </p><p>But basic measures cyclists take to protect themselves in the case of an accident could actually be hurting them. A <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1369847823001018" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recent study</a> conducted in Australia by academics at Queensland University and Flinders University found that bicyclists who wear helmets or safety vests might be putting themselves more at risk than if they'd gone without safety attire.</p><p>Researchers found that cyclists wearing helmets or vests are viewed as "less human" than those without any safety gear on. They surveyed 563 people, asking them to answer a questionnaire using photos of people in both cycling-specific attire and regular clothes to assess perceptions of dehumanization. Eight different photos — four of a man and four of a woman — showed a model standing with a bicycle while wearing either no safety gear, a baseball cap, a bicycle helmet, or a high-visibility vest. </p><p>Respondents also rated bicyclists on a dehumanization scale, placing them somewhere between a bug and a human, and answered other questions relating to behavior and demographics. Those surveyed said that a man or woman wearing a high-visibility vest looked the least human, while those wearing no gear were seen as the most human. </p><p>And those who view cyclists as less than human are more likely to be a threat to cyclists on the streets. <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1369847818308593?via%3Dihub#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A 2019 study found a link</a> between dehumanization and aggressive driving around cyclists. </p><p>The 2019 study found that "respondents who rated cyclists as 89 percent human or less showed 1.87 times more direct aggressive behaviors to cyclists compared to the respondents who rated cyclist as more than 90 percent human." </p><p>Previous research <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26275525/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has found</a> that generally negative views about cyclists are also associated with more dangerous and aggressive driving. </p><p>The researchers initially hypothesized that both a helmet and baseball cap would make a cyclist appear less human by obscuring their head and hair. But the study, published in Transportation Research Part F: Traffic Psychology and Behaviour, found that both the helmet and the vest were more likely to dehumanize a rider than the baseball cap. </p><p>Overall, 30% of respondents viewed cyclists as less than fully human. </p><p>The survey respondents weren't representative of the Australian population — they were "more likely to be male, earn higher incomes, be employed full time, be middle aged, and more highly educated," the researchers noted. They were also much more likely to bicycle regularly — 72% said they rode at least once a week, compared to 12% of the Australian population that does the same. The researchers theorized that regular cyclists were more likely to self-select into a survey about cycling. </p><div type="image" title="West Side Bicycle Lanes and Cityscape, New York City, New York" height="640" width="1280" msid="101286374" hostid="261"></div><h2>Bike helmet mandates might do more harm than good</h2><p>The research could add fuel to the <a href="https://slate.com/technology/2023/01/bike-helmets-cyclist-deaths-do-you-need-to-wear.html?pay=1687545861564&amp;support_journalism=please" target="_blank" rel="noopener">debate</a> over <a href="https://www.vox.com/2014/5/16/5720762/stop-forcing-people-to-wear-bike-helmets" target="_blank" rel="noopener">helmet mandates</a>, which are in place in about 200 localities and more than 20 states across the US. There's no federal bike helmet law, but in 2019, the National Transportation Safety Board <a href="https://www.ntsb.gov/news/press-releases/Pages/NR20191105.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recommended</a> that all 50 states mandate that adults wear helmets (many already require this for kids). </p><p>While helmets have been proven to <a href="https://academic.oup.com/ije/article/46/1/278/2617198?login=false" target="_blank" rel="noopener">significantly reduce head injuries and fatalities</a> in bicyclist accidents, many bicycling advocates and others <a href="https://www.calbike.org/resources/fact_sheets_and_faq_s/helmet_mandates_fact_sheet/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">oppose mandates</a> and argue they make streets less safe.  </p><p>Colin Browne, communications director for the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, told Insider recently that while wearing a bike helmet is a smart personal choice, helmet mandates are "terrible policy." He pointed to the fact that <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/apr/20/us-helmet-laws-police-citations-cyclists-of-colour-homeless" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Black cyclists and other minority groups are much more likely than white cyclists</a> to be cited by police for not wearing a helmet.</p><p>Research has <a href="https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/09/080903112034.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">found</a> that <a href="https://usa.streetsblog.org/2015/02/27/safety-in-numbers-biking-is-safest-in-nations-with-the-most-people-on-bikes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cyclists are also safer</a> when there are more of them on the road, in part because more riders is often associated with better infrastructure. Helmet mandates can <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-04-05/why-bike-helmet-laws-don-t-work" target="_blank" rel="noopener">discourage people from riding</a> in the first place, making the fewer who ride less safe. Advocates also fear mandates can discourage the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/16/nyregion/bike-helmets-arent-required-for-new-york-share-program.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">use of bike sharing systems</a>. </p><p>"Helmet laws as policy are counterproductive and, overall, make biking less safe because they keep a lot of people from biking," Browne said. </p><p>He also argued that there are a slew of other policies and personal choices that are more effective than wearing helmets at making biking safer. </p><p>"On the list of things to change to make bicycling or scootering safer, helmets are like number ten," he said. "From a policy standpoint, better infrastructure and lower speed limits and things like that are all going to keep people a lot safer."</p><p>Notably, <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/tanyamohn/2021/12/29/in-european-cities-bicycle-helmet-use-differs-but-wearing-them-saves-lives/?sh=75204a68436d" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bike helmet usage and mandates are rare</a> in cities with strong bike infrastructure and large numbers of cyclists, including in Europe. They love to use the word "freedom" as a shorthand explaining all the possibilities we enjoy as Americans: the freedom to do what you want in your private life, the freedom to raise your kids how you please, the freedom to start over fresh. America, they argue, is the freest place on earth, a land of liberty where nobody is encumbered or constrained by forces beyond their control.</p><p>It's a lyrical ideal - a story that has been passed down from the Founding Fathers.</p><p>But when you investigate our actual freedoms as Americans, that story begins to break down. How free can you truly be if, like four out of every 10 Americans, <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/10-americans-struggle-cover-400-emergency-expense-federal/story?id=63253846">you don't have $400 in the bank to cover an emergency expense</a>? Can you truly enjoy your freedom when you're <a href="https://news.gallup.com/opinion/polling-matters/260570/despite-economic-success-financial-anxiety-remains.aspx">not saving for retirement and your faith in the economy is eroding</a> at a rapid clip?</p><p>The truth is that in the modern world, economic security is key to freedom. If you don't have sufficient savings or a growing earning potential or the ability to help lay a foundation for your children, you're not free. If you can't leave your job for an exciting new possibility or get out from under a mountain of debt, you're not free - you're stuck in a cycle of increasing poverty that forces you to be reliant on your employer for (<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2018/06/15/for-the-biggest-group-of-american-workers-wages-arent-just-flat-theyre-falling/">a shrinking</a>) salary and (<a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2019/9/10/20858938/health-insurance-census-bureau-data-trump">if you're lucky</a>) health insurance.</p><p>Many young progressives online interpret this breakdown of American freedom as a failure of capitalism, and it's easy to understand why. When you've been fed the idea of "free market" capitalism, in which a shrinking menagerie of trickle-down "winners" keep growing their wallets at the expense of the bottom 90% of the economy for your entire life, it's easy to blame the whole system for failing you.</p><p>But what most people don't realize is that the rules of economies aren't inviolable. They're not constant everywhere in the known universe like physics. An economy is a choice, and it's possible to choose a better "flavor" of capitalism - one which provides more freedom and opportunity and choice to everyone. </p><p class="source"><span>Angela Ciccu</span></p><p class="caption">Paul Constant.</p><p>In this week's episode of "<a href="http://pitchforkeconomics.com/episode/re-imagining-capitalism-with-anu-partanen-and-trevor-corson/">Pitchfork Economics</a>," Nick Hanauer and David Goldstein interview two experts about the most stable, safest, and best-governed nation in the world - a country that always ranks near the top of international surveys of individual wealth, lack of corruption, progressiveness, and social justice. That nation is Finland. </p><p>And before critics roll out the "S" word, let's make it clear that while Finns enjoy an expansive social safety net, good pensions, and robust sick and family leave protections, their economy cannot be characterized in good faith as a socialist. Finland is a thoroughly capitalist nation: Some people make lots of money, and others make very little. But Finland has chosen a more inclusive form of capitalism that ensures that the wealthiest Finns pay their fair share in taxes while the poorest Finns don't suffer for lack of access to food, clothing, shelter, and medical care. In so doing, they've redefined what freedom means in the modern world.</p><p>In her brilliant and accessible book "<a href="https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780062316554">The Nordic Theory of Everything</a><em>,</em>" author Anu Partanen argues that Finland offers a blueprint to any nation interested in embracing a more compassionate capitalism, which she describes as the "Nordic theory of love." In a New York Times editorial titled "<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/07/opinion/sunday/finland-socialism-capitalism.html">Finland Is a Capitalist Paradise</a>," Partanen and her coauthor Trevor Corson take the argument even further, arguing that after one year living in Finland together, they have experienced "an increase in personal freedom" over the United States.</p><p>In Partanen's book, she claims that the economies in Nordic nations like Finland are "intentionally designed to take into account the specific challenges of modern life and give citizens as much logistical and financial independence as possible." Through universal healthcare, affordable childcare that's capped at $300 per month, free college, and copious paid vacations, the authors have enjoyed the freedom to live their lives unencumbered by worries about a sudden large expense destroying their lives.</p><p>The only question that matters is this: Which kind of freedom is most important to you? The freedom for corporations to avoid taxes by lobbying to change the tax code, or the freedom for you to start a new career in your 40s? The freedom to deregulate pollution or the freedom to take a paid vacation? When you decide that the goal of your economy is to create more happiness for everyone rather than to optimize shareholder value, it's amazing to see how your definition of freedom can change for the better. </p><p class="tagline">This is an opinion column. My siblings and I didn't get many new toys or surprise treats, because there was never much money to spare. However, my parents were always willing to spend money on bikes, probably because having wheels kept my three siblings and me occupied from sun-up till sun-down. </p><p>"Will that be cash or credit?" the cashier asked my dad. </p><p>My dad turned to us kids. </p><p>"Credit? No plastic here," he said, for our benefit, not the cashier's. "Cash is the only way to go."</p><p>My dad went on and on about his cash-only philosophy, long enough that I was paralyzed with embarrassment. I don't remember what bike I got that day, but I do remember being mortified at my dad proselytizing about the evils of debt. </p><p>The thing is, my dad wasn't someone who should be giving financial lessons. He may not have used credit cards, but he never managed his cash responsibly, in part because of his untreated bipolar disorder. Still, his lesson was clear: cash was good, debt was bad. In our family, it was as simple as that. </p><p>I recognized that my dad wasn't someone whose financial footsteps I wanted to follow. Still, as a young adult I internalized his attitude about debt, to my detriment. Here are three things about debt and credit cards that I wish I could tell my 20-year-old self. </p><h2><strong>1. There's no shame in using credit</strong></h2><p>Despite my dad's strong options, I got a credit card soon after I turned 18. It was an impulse decision at college orientation, where the bank required only my signature to give me a credit card with a $500 limit. </p><p>It was a small amount, but since I was supporting myself through college, that extra $500 made a big difference. I used it as a cushion between paychecks, when I needed food or books.</p><p>Despite the fact that I was using the card responsibly and making on-time payments, I was ashamed to be using credit. I had internalized my dad's message, no matter how misguided it was, so I felt embarrassed by this financial decision. </p><p>A few years later, I needed a car for the first time. My fiancé mentioned getting a loan, and I bristled. Debt was bad, after all. </p><p>My fiancé pointed out that my family always had unreliable cars with mechanical trouble. Financing a more reliable car was the responsible choice, he argued. It was then, at 23, that I started to really see the issue with my dad's teaching about debt. </p><h2><strong>2. It's spending choices, not methods, that are important</strong></h2><p>Credit cards get a bad rap because they can allow people to live beyond their means. Of course, spending more money than you make is problematic, especially if you're spending on frivolous purchases. </p><p>However, irresponsible spending can happen with cash, credit, or debit. My dad would regularly spend cash on expensive clothes for himself, but not budget for bills. He would invest in his hobby (writing children's books), while ignoring the interior painting business that put food on the table. </p><p>I wish he had taught me about responsible spending, rather than simply labeling credit as bad. </p><h2><strong>3. Debt is a tool</strong></h2><p>When my dad finished railing against credit cards, he would switch to debt in general. "Debt-free is the way to be," he'd proclaim. I wish I could have countered that point, telling my young self that debt is actually an important tool. </p><p>I'm only 30, but I've had a lot of debt at various points in my life. Right now I have two mortgages, many student loans, and a few thousand dollars of lingering credit card debt. </p><p>However, I'm also in a more financially stable position than I've ever been in. Those student loans let me earn a degree that has lead to a lucrative career that I love. My mortgage on a fixer-upper let me cut my monthly housing expenses in half. Credit cards let me fix up that property (which is now a rental), building equity that I used to purchase a wonderful family home. </p><p>Like any tool, debt can be dangerous. But, when it's used cautiously, it can pay off big time. </p><p>It's hard to unlearn problematic financial beliefs, especially if they've been reinforced throughout your life. I'm thankful that my husband was raised in a family where he learned about responsible use of debt and credit cards. <ul class="summary-list"><li><strong><keyword id="6374076" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="finland">Finland</keyword> came in first in the <keyword id="2480076" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="World-Happiness-Report">World Happiness Report</keyword> from Gallup for the fourth year running.</strong></li><li><strong>Finland has universal healthcare and a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/finland-education-beats-us-2017-5#1-competition-isnt-as-important-as-cooperation-1">successful school system.</a></strong></li><li><strong> I visited Finland and spoke to people there to see what it's like to live in the happiest country.</strong></li></ul><p>For the <a href="https://worldhappiness.report/news/its-a-three-peat-finland-keeps-top-spot-as-happiest-country-in-world/">fourth</a> year in a row, <a href="https://happiness-report.s3.amazonaws.com/2021/WHR+21.pdf">Finland</a> topped the list of the <a href="https://s3.amazonaws.com/happiness-report/2019/WHR19.pdf">World Happiness Report</a>.</p><p>If this is surprising to you -  after all, Finland is known for its brutally cold winters and limited daylight - know that some of the people of Finland are just as amazed.</p><p>"Finland is not an overtly happy-go-lucky or worry-free place," said Tom Lippo, founder of <a href="http://www.factlaw.com">Fact Law</a>, a law firm with offices in Finland and the US. "Finns are reserved. For example, the <keyword id="54650" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Finnish">Finnish</keyword> language has a common phrase that's loosely translated as 'one who smiles for no good reason,' and that is <em>not</em> a compliment. So Finns have been shocked to learn that they are so happy!"</p><p>The annual survey from Gallup looks at six key factors: GDP per capita, social support, life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and corruption levels. Finland scores well in all of these categories, although it does particularly well with the generosity factor.</p><p>The study has a lot of people wondering what it is that gives Finns such a positive outlook and what life is really like in the Land of the Thousand Lakes.</p><p>I visited Finland and spoke with the people there to see what it's like to live in the world's happiest country.</p><p><strong><em>Editor's Note: This article was originally published in June 2019. </em></strong></p><h2>Parents love that their children can get an excellent education in Finland</h2><div type="image" title="strollers" height="3648" width="4864" msid="80034421" hostid="261"></div><p>Just like with the World <keyword id="6358439" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="happiness">Happiness</keyword> Report, the education system in Finland has repeated success in national rankings, <a href="https://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-0318-doyle-finnish-schools-20160318-story.html">according to the Los Angeles Times</a>.</p><p>Additionally, people highly regard anyone working as a teacher - including the country itself, who ensures teachers get top-notch training and excellent pay, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/education/2015/jun/17/highly-trained-respected-and-free-why-finlands-teachers-are-different">according to The Guardian</a>.</p><p>Jonathan, a taxi driver from the United Kingdom, relocated to Finland after he met his wife there. Although he eventually plans to return to the UK, he told Insider the top reason for staying is because he wants his children to go to school in Finland and get the best education possible.</p><p>Sami Hero, the chief operating officer of <a href="https://www.happy-or-not.com/">HappyOrNot</a>, a Finnish company that makes customer satisfaction measurement terminals, lives in Tampere, Finland, explained that the education is meritocracy-based, which encourages students at a young age to work hard.</p><p>"When people graduate from a program like med school, they don't have debilitating debts. At the same time, even high school is meritocracy based," Hero told Insider.</p><p>He continued, "After 9th grade you have apply to high school and the acceptance is based on your GPA and sometimes they have exams similar to universities. This early triage helps kids formulate their future path pretty early and they learn early on the hard work necessary to reach goals, and also how it feels to fail or miss your goals."</p><h2>Finland was ranked <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/books/2016/mar/11/finland-ranked-worlds-most-literate-nation">the most literate nation</a> in 2016, and the Finns love their libraries</h2><div type="image" title="Oodi library Finland" height="750" width="1000" msid="80034423" hostid="261"></div><p>One thing was for sure - it didn't matter at all that I could speak zero words of the Finnish language.</p><p>In Finland, many people speak English, as well as Swedish. And both Finnish and Swedish are official languages taught in schools, as Finland is <a href="https://finland.fi/life-society/schools-help-keep-finland-bilingual/">officially a bilingual country</a>.</p><p>"Quite a large percentage of Finns speak more than two foreign languages. They also <keyword id="6354692" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> quite a bit for vacations so they are exposed to other cultures," Hero said.</p><p>Many Finnish people also grow up going to the library.</p><p>"The library is a major part of life for the people here," <a href="https://www.hanigo.eu/">Hanna-Leena Halsas</a>, a tour guide in Finland, told Insider. "They might do schoolwork there or their hobbies. It's a safe environment."</p><p>Perhaps the best example of this in practice is the <a href="https://www.oodihelsinki.fi/en/">Oodi</a> <a href="https://www.oodihelsinki.fi/en/">Helsinki Central Library</a>, which opened in 2018.</p><p>The bright, open space is a mishmash of a lot of different areas, from books and desks to audio recording booths and sewing stations.</p><p>It was built to be a work space, but also a living room for the people of Helsinki, and when I visited it was filled with people enjoying the area.</p><h2>Finland is also an incredibly safe country</h2><div type="image" title="Helsinki, Finland with ferris wheel and Uspensky cathedral" height="800" width="1200" msid="80034424" hostid="261"></div><p>"It's a good place to raise a family," the taxi driver Jonathan said, explaining that he never worries when his young kid cycles around the neighborhood alone.</p><p>Of course, in any city there's going to be some level of crime, but even in the capital city of Helsinki there are no major safety issues, <a href="https://www.tripsavvy.com/safety-in-finland-1626263">according to TripSavvy</a>.</p><p>Once you get to the more rural areas of the country, crime is almost nonexistent: Finland was named the safest country in the world according to a 2017 World Economic Forum report.</p><p>"According to <a href="https://www.controlrisks.com/-/media/corporate/files/riskmap/maps/travel-risk-map-2019-ed1.pdf">the 2019 Travel Risk Map</a>, which assesses the world across three categories - medical risks, security, and road safety - Finland has the lowest overall threat level," according to <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/finland/articles/reasons-to-visit-finland/">The Telegraph</a>.</p><h2>Universal health care is a given in Finland</h2><div type="image" title="finland happy" height="996" width="1329" msid="80034425" hostid="261"></div><p>"Universal health care is seen by Finns as 'the right things to do' as a moral issue, with the underlying economics as a secondary issue. Debate about it is ongoing, but the focus is mostly on how to achieve goals rather than how to eliminate it, or whether such benefits are deserved by those who use them," Lippo said.</p><p>Merja Herrala, who does marketing and communications for <a href="https://www.visitfinland.com/?gclid=CjwKCAjwtYXmBRAOEiwAYsyl3GyiHVPxZLJwyCaenz41kx4HlSUc39FxYgdq5YtbhusVxPYIyaDdaBoCJFcQAvD_BwE">Visit Finland</a>, grew up in Lahti and is now based in Helsinki. She said that not having to worry about potential medical bills relieves a lot of stress for the Finnish people.</p><p>"It's wonderful that when you get injured or sick, you go to the hospital and you know you will get good treatment, but it won't cost you a fortune," she explained.</p><h2>Finns are big on getting outside and exploring nature</h2><div type="image" title="finland 2" height="1200" width="1600" msid="80034427" hostid="261"></div><p>The people of Finland love exploring the outdoors, from <a href="https://www.nationalparks.fi/nationalparks">their 40 national parks</a> to the <a href="https://www.visitfinland.com/article/aland-a-special-piece-of-finland/">islands of the Baltic Sea</a> to northernmost Lapland. It's no wonder the population loves to go hiking or biking - the Finnish landscape is spectacular.</p><p>"The country is sparsely populated on average, which means there is a lot of nature to enjoy and even private lands are accessible to everyone as long as you don't go to someone's backyard to pick up mushrooms and berries," Hero said.</p><p>Even in the cities, though, it's possible to stay in touch with the outdoors.</p><p>"I love the open spaces in the cities and the well-maintained walking, trekking, and biking paths that make exercise very accessible," Hero added.</p><h1>Finland is a winter wonderland</h1><div type="image" title="finland cross country skiing" height="1000" width="1333" msid="80034430" hostid="261"></div><p>The cold-averse like myself may find it difficult to believe, but the Finns love their home in winter just as much - if not more - than during the summer.</p><p>Hero explained that life in the chilly months doesn't change too much from summertime. Instead, Finns adjust to the cold and still get around on bicycles. To them, winter just means added activities, such as ice skating, cross-country skiing, and dog sledding.</p><p>"You learn to live with the seasons," Halsas said.</p><p>Lapland remains a popular destination during the winter, and all the snow makes it a perfect destination for skiing or snowboarding.</p><p>Plus the chances of seeing the Northern Lights are high - in Lapland they <a href="https://www.visitfinland.com/article/on-the-hunt-for-the-northern-lights/#:~:text=In%20northern%20Lapland%20the%20lights,the%20northern%20lights%20are%20good.">can</a> grace the sky <a href="https://www.visitfinland.com/lapland/">dozens of nights a year</a>.</p><h2>Finns love their saunas, which are proven to increase immunity and well-being</h2><div type="image" title="Sauna Finland" height="2742" width="3655" msid="80034435" hostid="261"></div><p>"Be careful," Halsas warned me before I made my way to <a href="http://www.loylyhelsinki.fi/en/front-page/">Löyly</a> sauna in Helsinki. "It's addictive."</p><p>I laughed this off, of course, but after one jump from the steamy sauna to freezing cold water outside, a Finnish tradition, I had to do it again and again.</p><p>Finns love their saunas, and pretty much every home or apartment complex will have one. Finland has a population of about <a href="https://www.stat.fi/til/vrm_en.html">5.5 million people</a>, and it's estimated that there are <a href="https://finland.fi/life-society/bare-facts-of-the-sauna/">well over 2 million saunas in the country</a>.</p><p>"Pretty much every house has a sauna, and there are more saunas than cars here," Päivyt Tallqvist, senior vice president of corporate communications at <a href="https://www.finnair.com/">Finnair</a> said. "In the summertime, I go every day."</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/health-benefits-saunas-medical-review-2018-8">Sauna usage has been linked to</a> improved heart health, better immune system function, fewer blood pressure problems, and more, <a href="https://www.mayoclinicproceedings.org/article/S0025-6196(18)30275-1/fulltext">according to a Mayo Clinic review summary</a>.</p><p>But the best reason to go? It just feels <em>good</em>.</p><p>You sit in a room sweating profusely as a plump Finnish man tosses water onto a pile of hot rocks, and just when you don't think you can take it anymore, you dunk your body up to your neck in freezing cold water. While this might not sound appealing, it feels blissful.</p><h2>Finland's New Nordic cuisine is impressive</h2><div type="image" title="New Nordic Finnish food cuisine" height="3648" width="4864" msid="80034438" hostid="261"></div><p>If you think that Finns rely on fish and potatoes alone, you're in for a big surprise.</p><p>"The <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-and-worst-pasta-dishes-to-order-at-restaurant">restaurant scene</a> has grown in the past 20 years," Herrala said. "We've always had a lot of Chinese, Indian, and Nepalese food, and now you can also get Thai, Mexican, and Japanese. But the most popular trend now is New Nordic."</p><p>New Nordic food uses local ingredients and relies heavily on seasonality, incorporating berries, herbs, and wild vegetables. </p><h2>Finns firmly believe in honesty</h2><div type="image" title="finland finnish women" height="1533" width="2044" msid="80034441" hostid="261"></div><p>"If you ask a Finn 'How's it going?' be ready to receive an honest answer, and be prepared to listen. It took me a while to tone down the American pleasantries that don't really mean anything.</p><p>"People are really earnest," Hero said.</p><p>When I talked to people in Finland, they seemed completely engaged and present, and spoke in a friendly yet straightforward manner. What it's like to live in Finland, the happiest country in the world

<ul class="summary-list"><li>As Americans are urged to self-isolate during the coronavirus pandemic, many are ordering groceries online for delivery or curbside pick-up to minimize their risk of infection. </li><li>But that's not an option for Erica, mother to an 8-month-old son, who lost a month's worth benefits when she stayed home with symptoms of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.</li><li>Her story is similar to others on federal food assistance nationwide, who have to choose between shopping in person (often with children in tow) and risking potential infection, or staying home with an empty kitchen. </li><li><a href="https://www.insider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>These days, every grocery trip is a balance of risk assessment and hygiene for Erica, a mother in rural Oklahoma with a eight-month-old son.</p><p>They drive 45 minutes to the nearest Walmart. Once there, Erica picks out as many essential items as many as she can get. Throughout the trip, she sanitizes everything repeatedly — her hands, the cart handle — and tries to stay a safe distance away from other people, avoiding every occupied aisle, circling the store until she has everything she needs. Then she check outs with a cashier. </p><p>Online grocery shopping <a href="https://www.digitalcommerce360.com/2020/03/30/online-grocery-shopping-soars-during-the-coronavirus-crisis/">is soaring</a> in the US, but Erica relies on <keyword id="2613914" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="WIC">WIC</keyword> (Women, Infants, and Children) benefits, the federal assistance program that provides financial resources for nutritional purposes to low-income, nutritionally at-risk mothers of young children.</p><p>In Oklahoma, those benefits require that she be physically present inside the store to use her monthly $80 allotment to stock her kitchen. Curbside pickup, delivery, and even self-checkout aren't options for Erica, who has been relying on WIC since January 2019. </p><p>With the coronavirus pandemic spreading across the US — and talk that it could hit Southern states hard — Erica is nervous <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-coronavirus-travel-through-air-droplets-aerosols-2020-3">about so much personal contact</a>, and bringing her infant son in with her, which she usually has to do unless she can get a family member to babysit. </p><p>"There's no provision in place for someone to do my shopping for me. I tried self-checkout once, when I first got the card, and it basically crashed their computer," Erica, who asked that her last name not be used to protect her family's privacy, told Insider via email. "My immune system isn't great. I'm confused, concerned, scared to death that my baby will get sick. They can be used to buy specific staple foods that are rich in nutrients, including infant formula, dairy products, bread, and vegetables.</p><p>But when Erica starting feel ill, there was no provision for someone else to do her shopping for her — the current system forced her to chose between going to the store with possible coronavirus symptoms, or forfeit her benefits for the month. </p><p>In early March, Erica started feeling ill with a fever, dizziness, digestive issues, and a persistent cough. Eventually, she called a COVID-19 hotline in mid-March and was advised to stay home, which she did until her symptoms began to ease at the end of the month. </p><p>But benefits on WIC cards don't roll over month to month, so if you're unable to get to the store or find eligible food, that month's assistance is lost. Erica missed the deadline and as a result, forfeited her monthly $80 allotment of groceries. </p><p>Since the end of March, Erica has been feeling better. Even so, grocery trips feel risky, especially with her baby. </p><p>Evidence suggests children aren't at a high risk of coronavirus infection, but infants under a year old could be susceptible because <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cdc-children-coronavirus-infants-boys-may-face-higher-risk-2020-4">they haven't yet developed</a> a strong immune system.</p><p>So as a breastfeeding mom, Erica feels constantly vulnerable. She worries every time her child coughs. </p><p>"We are at risk. If we could completely avoid going in the store, most of us would. And we definitely would rather not bring our kids in with us. It's not like we can leave them in the car. We can't leave them home," she said.</p><h2><strong>Others have shared similar stories of risking grocery trips</strong></h2><p>Erica is hardly the only person grappling with red tape.</p><p>"Every time you walk out of your house and go somewhere, the potential of bringing it back is there again," David Hensel, a single father-of-six who, like Erica, had to risk in-person trips to the store to feed his family, told the <a href="https://www.chicagotribune.com/coronavirus/ct-coronavirus-online-food-stamps-grocery-delivery-20200407-b3xj3m6qvjaadj6s7bjubfk3oy-story.html">Chicago Tribune</a>. </p><p>Michigan resident <a href="https://twitter.com/wrightj29/status/1248699527055507463">Joe Wright</a>, whose family uses WIC, took to Twitter, urging the state to allow WIC-only shopping hours or online-ordering options to help keep WIC recipients and their children safe. </p><p>Politicians are taking issue with the current policies, too.</p><p>Michelle Andrews, who is running for a position in the Baltimore City Council in November, <a href="https://medium.com/@michelleandrewsbaltimore/online-snap-and-wic-grocery-ordering-and-delivery-is-needed-in-baltimore-city-79e3db8660a3">shared in a Medium blog post</a> that her city was facing the same problem. </p><p>"Real talk: Baltimore's low-income families are hurting. They need access to healthy and nutritious food," Andrews wrote. "If there are already programs in place in other states that show promising results, why not implement them here in Baltimore?"</p><h2><strong>Federal policy limits WIC to retail-only in most states</strong></h2><p>Currently, almost every state requires that WIC services are used in a traditional retail setting — clients must shop in-person for their groceries, then check out with a cashier, according to Brian Dittmeier, senior public policy counsel with the National WIC Association.</p><p>"We hope that USDA will work with state WIC agencies to implement innovative strategies – such as curbside pickup – to streamline the shopping experience for WIC families," he told Insider. </p><p>State WIC programs could opt to change that, but would need federal approval, since the programs vary by state and even by retailer, Dittmeier said. "The decision is always with the USDA. If states or retailers are interested in exploring this, they still need USDA to sign off on it," Dittmeier said. </p><p>In a few states, other food assistance programs are available online. SNAP (Supplemental Food Assistance Program) and EBT (financials benefits accessible via a card) recipients are eligible for grocery delivery on Amazon, and for delivery or curbside pickup services at <a href="https://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/online-purchasing-pilot">as part of a pilot program</a> in <a href="https://thefern.org/ag_insider/online-purchasing-expands-to-one-third-of-snap-recipients/">select states</a>.<a href="https://thefern.org/ag_insider/most-snap-recipients-cant-buy-groceries-online-now-some-states-push-for-change/?fbclid=IwAR0y1Q1Lb5qzv8PwnEdNnOi_oh4mPXeXKJCTHTnksTlqRaQ_Pnj5wcZwjbM"></a></p><p>There have been some changes to WIC policies in light of the coronavirus. The USDA now allows states more flexibility when screening new candidates — they can conduct screenings remotely, or allow recipients to defer in-person assessments without losing benefits.</p><p>But a workaround for in-person shopping presents a different logistic challenge, which could take a while, judging how much time and effort went into getting the SNAP pilots up and running.</p><p><div type="image" title="health weightloss greens vegetables veggies fruits vegan vegetarian grocery groceries fitness nutrition scale farmer’s market wellness" height="1667" width="2223" msid="75148708" hostid="261"></div></p><h2>There are many cracks for WIC recipients to fall through</h2><p>Some things are especially hard to adjust for in the new world of coronavirus.</p><p>WIC packages can vary from family to family based on the number of children and their ages. Typically, grocery store staff aren't specially trained on what is or isn't eligible for WIC, or how to substitute if things are out of stock, so there's not an easy one-size-fits-all grocery list for WIC delivery or pick up. And despite <a href="https://twitter.com/ShaunChavis/status/1244816889928351746">social media rumors</a> about WIC starting on the first of the month, benefit cycles vary depending on state and when individual families signed up for the program.</p><p>All of this can make it a logistical challenge for WIC providers, representatives, and retailers to coordinate a transition to contact-less services. </p><p>"We continue to encourage participants to stay in constant contact with local agencies about developments in their community to expand allowable food options, and streamline the shopping experience," Dittmeier said.</p><p>Erica appreciates efforts to make things easier, but that doesn't change the fact that her options are extremely limited right now.</p><p>"Every other person has the option to order online and to pick up their groceries and not have to go in person into the store at all. Everyone, except us. They have a choice. A mom who relies on federal benefits can't get her groceries online, even though she had a fever and a cough: 'I'm confused, concerned, scared to death'

You can read the other <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/cool-jobs-at-tesla" target="_blank" rel="noopener">profiles here</a>.</em></p><p><br />It's a sunny afternoon at Tesla's factory in Fremont, California - and the facility is under drone attack.</p><p>Small camera drones routinely appear in the skies above the world's most interesting carmaker. Everyone - spies, the curious, people who just want to fly their drones over the most challenging target - wants a look.</p><p>The scene outside is a marked contrast to what's going inside the Tesla Learning Center, a large room where a dozen new hires are methodically studying how to assemble a vehicle. Employees who previously might not have been able to tell a bumper from a fender or a motor from an instrument panel are learning Tesla's manufacturing process. The vibe is cheerfully didactic.</p><p>The man in charge of all this is the production training manager, Andre Rivera, a Tesla veteran of seven years who got his start in the auto industry on the assembly line at this same factory when it was known as New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., or Nummi, jointly operated by General Motors and Toyota. (GM wanted to learn about Toyota's "lean" manufacturing system, and Toyota wanted to better understand the US car business; Rivera spent 19 years working there before leaving to become a consultant in the industry.)</p><h2>The guru at work</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Benjamin Zhang/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">Tesla's factory in Fremont, California.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Wearing a blue Tesla cap, a white Tesla shirt, and jeans, Rivera, 47, tells a story about an early hire, a young man who was an impressive interview - until talk turned to his work background.</p><p>"He sank into his seat. His energy was gone," Rivera recalled. "He said: 'OK, now you're going to ask me about my experience. But I don't have any with automobiles. I'm a server at the Olive Garden.'"</p><p>Rivera knew where the kid was coming from; he was once in his 20s with no idea how to build a car in a modern factory - and he was later put in charge of an entire assembly line to launch new vehicles.</p><p>"That's a very tough job," Rivera told the young man, seeking to ease his anxiety.</p><p>Then Rivera asked him what he had to handle every day. He got exactly the response he wanted: dealing with different attitudes, multitasking, working on a clock, communicating, problem-solving.</p><p>"That's what I want you to do for me here," Rivera told him. "I can teach you how to build a car. I can teach you how to use a tool. But I need what you're bringing."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Robert Galbraith</span></p><p class="caption">Rivera started in the industry when Tesla's factory was called Nummi.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Rivera often uses that story to illustrate how Tesla is a place of boundless opportunity, free of conventional restraints and nurturing of elevated expectations.</p><p>The company has grown significantly since then, when Rivera was one of just four supervisors still assembling the original Tesla Roadster. But even though its entire workforce is now over 30,000, Tesla is still vastly smaller than Toyota or Ford.</p><p>"If you have two boxers of equal ability and one's much smaller, the big guy's going to crush the little guy, obviously," Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, said last year during the company's third-quarter earnings call. "So the little guy better have a heck of a lot more skill. That is why our standards are high ... They're high because if they're not high, we will die."</p><h2>The man who trains everybody in the Tesla way</h2><p>This is the crux of Rivera's job, which, in the grand scheme of Tesla, is huge. He oversees the training of everybody who comes to the Fremont factory.</p><p>All hires have orientation for a day. Next comes a day of "manufacturing essentials," where employees learn their way around the factory. Production workers then get two days of "manufacturing fundamentals," and people destined to work on the Model 3 mass-market vehicle train for two additional days.</p><p>Rivera is a teacher, a mentor, and, as his story about the insecure new hire shows, a guru. The objective isn't simply to staff the production lines - it's to set employees on a path to grow with the company.</p><p>"Back in Nummi days, it was a cool culture, and they gave me a good foundation, but a lot of people hit the ceiling," he said.</p><p>"There's no ceiling here. This group of people is very passionate about these cars because they're changing the environment and they're changing that way people think about <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword>."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Benjamin Zhang/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">Tesla vehicles on the assembly line.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Like many professionals involved in auto manufacturing, Rivera gets off to an early start.</p><p>He could be at the factory by 6 a.m., then into meetings or consultations about additional training that could be needed out on the floor, especially on the new Model 3 line. ("Model 3 is a high priority for us now," he says.)</p><p>Then the new hires start rolling in. They've just wrapped up basic orientation, and, according to Rivera, they're pretty pumped up on the Tesla story, even if they did their homework beforehand.</p><p>"I haven't seen one week when we don't have people coming in, except maybe Thanksgiving week," he said.</p><p>In total, Rivera could be coordinating training from Monday to the following Monday with his staff of about 50, while also managing requests for additional training for workers already on the job.</p><p>There's an intense focus on safety, Rivera says, noting that Tesla doesn't want anybody getting injured because, for example, they don't know the proper way to use a tool.</p><p>Tesla came under scrutiny last year after several employees <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-factory-workers-detail-grueling-conditions-fremont-2017-5">said they had injuries</a> from long hours of repetitive movements. The company says it has since <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-reveals-new-safety-measures-policies-at-fremont-factory-2018-2">implemented new policies</a> designed to improve working conditions, and its new safety chief, Laurie Shelby, recently announced Tesla's intention to become the <a href="https://www.tesla.com/blog/becoming-safest-car-factory-world">safest auto factory in the world</a>.</p><h2>Teaching people to change the world</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Tesla</span></p><p class="caption">Rivera says the Model 3 is a high priority.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>With over 20 years of experience under his belt, Rivera has seen a lot in the auto industry. But he's never seen anything like Tesla before.</p><p>"The way that we think about the car is totally different from how people have always thought about cars," he said, citing some of <a href="https://www.tesla.com/blog/master-plan-part-deux">Musk's ideas</a> about how to reinvent the automobile.</p><p>"It wasn't anything that was crazy," Rivera said. "It was just common sense. Why doesn't everybody think like this?"</p><p>He points to Tesla's lack of model years in favor of over-the-air software updates that can improve a vehicle overnight. Rivera, who worked with the traditional industry's five-to-seven-year cycles for introducing new versions of cars, says Tesla is satisfying a deeply felt customer need. Why should they have to wait so long for something new?</p><p>That speed, Rivera says, generates the new ideas Tesla will need to be successful. He also scoffs at the notion of "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/gm-could-put-tesla-out-of-business-tomorrow-if-it-wanted-2015-1">Tesla killers</a>" coming to market over the next few years.</p><p>"Our mission is to transition the world," he said. "And we know we can't do that ourselves."</p><p>In the end, Rivera's lifetime in the industry has enabled him to appreciate his luck.</p><p>"To be able to come in at the ground level to launch the Model S was right in my wheelhouse," he said.</p><p>"I was in the right place at the right time," he added. The man who trains Tesla's workforce reveals how his job goes beyond staffing production lines

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Oscar B. Castillo, a documentary photographer, had extraordinary access to Venezuela's PGV prison during an extended period when it was controlled by inmates.</li></ul><p>One of Venezuela's hottest venues for musicians and sports stars was, for part of the last decade, a maximum-security prison run by its own inmates. </p><p>"Party at the PGV tonight," local DJs would announce over the radio. Visitors would come from the nearby towns, or all the way from the capital, Caracas, 100 miles away. </p><p>The PGV, or the General Penitentiary of Venezuela, was a place where inmates mostly roamed freely. The cell blocks had been torn out and there was no "behind bars." But there was also a rigid, if convoluted, code of conduct that was maintained by gangs and an arsenal of heavy weapons. Infractions were met with brutal punishments.</p><p>Visitors were considered sacred, and off-limits. The PGV was at its best on Visitors' Days — which could run for weeks since there wasn't a formal limit.  </p><p>Christmas, Mother's Day, or the birthdays of gang leaders who ran the place were always a good excuse to put on concerts, or bring in bouncy castles, clowns, and hot dog carts for visiting kids. As night fell, DJs would be brought in to perform in the penitentiary's central square with electronic music, laser shows, and fireworks. </p><div type="image" title="A couple is seen dancing." height="1000" width="1500" msid="93668288" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="Kids are seen on a huge bouncy castle" height="1000" width="1500" msid="93668289" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="A woman sings in front of a band of Mariachis." height="1000" width="1500" msid="93668290" hostid="261"></div><h2>Outside/Inside </h2><p>From the outside, there were vestiges of ordinary prison infrastructure: High fences heavily crowned with barbed wire, control towers, and checkpoints manned by military officers armed with rifles and machine guns. Long lines of relatives, mostly women and kids, carrying large bags of goods and tired expressions on their faces, lined up under the scorching heat to submit to searches — or be made to pay bribes — before being allowed through. </p><p>But look closer, and you would have seen a thin fence. On one side were guards, employed by the state and confined to the prison's perimeter. On the other side, manning the PGV's entrance, a select group of prisoners held far more powerful guns, and many more of them. </p><p>Once inside, most inmates — everyone here was an inmate — walked around freely through the maze of corridors, pavilions, and wards. In some areas, shacks and other private dwellings had been erected.  </p><p>From the alleyways and through the prison's windows, the rugged mountain landscape, which lent the town of San Juan de Los Morros its name, could be seen in the distance — beautiful, but also painful, for how it reminded prisoners of their lost freedom. </p><p>The PGV first opened in 1948, billed as a model South American prison where prisoners could work the soil, care for animals, and live in the relative open. </p><p>But starting around 2007, as the institutional structure of Venezuela crumbled and mafia activity and corruption spiraled out of control, prison gangs amassed weapons and drugs and, with it, leverage. After years of continuous abandonment and failed policies, police and soldiers were often interchangable with criminals, and human rights groups documented their abuses.</p><p>Around 2009, the criminal group called "El Carro" (The Car), under the command of El Principal, had taken over the daily workings of the PGV. There, entrepreneurial prisoners filled tables with basic items, like bread and DVDs, or marijuana joints that were artfully arranged to look like a bouquet of flowers. </p><p>More stands lined the prison's narrow corridors, which reverberated with the rhythms of Salsa and Reggaeton. You might find barbeque meat, or rum or vodka-based cocktails spun in blenders and served with a lime twist. </p><p>Even in those times when extreme shortages plagued Venezuela, here at the PGV, people could find practically anything they wished to buy. On visitor days, you might see free Venezuelans shopping for toilet paper, flour or cooking oil — basic products that had completely disappeared from supermarkets shelves.</p><p>All of this happened under the attentive eyes of Los Luceros. Select members of the gangs that ran the PGV, they answered to orders from the Principal. </p><p>Armed with revolvers, rifles, and even hand grenades, Los Luceros made sure that everything ran smoothly. They also enforced the payment of an obligatory weekly tax, called "La Causa," which officially paid for prison maintenance and security (more weapons), as well as parties and other activities. </p><p>For inmates, life at the PGV was like walking a tightrope over a pool of sharks. </p><p>Abiding by an unwritten code known as La Rutina was obligatory, and prisoners lived under the constant threat of ruthless punishment if they stepped outside of it. </p><p>A minor offense, or the wrong look, might make you into a pariah, or lead to a punishment that could be the last thing seen in this world. Stealing a cigarette could result in a bullet through your hand. On Mondays, in an improvised arena called the Coliseum, dozens of inmates were compelled to settle their debts or other disputes over knife fights. </p><p>Ordinary words like egg, milk or water — that in Venezuelan slang might carry a vague sexual connotation — were banned because of their potential to offend other inmates. Saying them could get you banished to dirty and trash-filled corners of the prison, far from the markets and the fun.</p><h2>Free Convict </h2><p>For three years, from the beginning of 2014 until Venezuelan authorities finally shut the place down in 2016, I had extraordinary access to the PGV as a Venezuelan documentary photographer. </p><p>At that point, the PGV had a population of around 5,000 people — more than six times its intended capacity. Most of the inmates were still in legal limbo; many hadn't yet been tried for their alleged offense, or given an exact sentence. It was also extraordinarily violent: In 2014, there were at least 309 homicides in Venezuelan prisons, where some 60,000 prisoners were held, according to the Venezuelan Prisons Observatory. </p><div type="image" title="The words &quot;Free Convict&quot; are seen on the wall." height="1000" width="1500" msid="93668295" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="A prisoner does a motorcycle stunt in an open area." height="1000" width="1500" msid="93668296" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="Two men are seen on either side of a wall. One is seated on the floor and the other sits at a desk." height="1600" width="2400" msid="93668297" hostid="261"></div><p>I was at the PGV with Free Convict, a Hip Hop collective formed by 12 inmates and to try to understand their lives in all of their  complexities. These men had survived gang life, street violence, drugs, and now this bizarre penitentiary existence. They were now looking to chart a new path for themselves, making rhymes around the themes of non-violence, self-improvement, and redemption. </p><p>In the early days, Free Convict would gather in a Freestyle circle in the prison's central square. The meetings became bigger and more frequent, and eventually even the PGV's toughest bosses began to show them respect. (It helped that their leader, Ray Martinez, was part of the "El Carro" gang that controlled the prison.) </p><p>Through the same cracks by which drugs and weapons flowed into the PGV, Free Convict managed to smuggle in  a recording studio, where they recorded a full album and produce music videos. In time, they got to be good enough, and famous enough, to attract collaborators both from inside the prison and beyond its walls. </p><p>Only in total chaos, as Venezuela was of those years, would a place like the PGV be possible. Out of that anarchic landscape, Free Convict offered the possibility of a different way of life, a fresh start, and an oasis in the midst of madness. </p><h2>Héctor</h2><p>One of the inmates behind Free Convict was a man named Héctor. </p><p>Like a few of the others, he had arrived at the PGV as something of a stereotype of the hardened criminal. By the time I met him, he was much more interested in self-reflection and finding redemption. </p><p>Born in 1992, Héctor came up in the Pinto Salinas neighborhood of Caracas. As a kid, he was a promising basketball player. But his future in the sport was cut short in 2010. His gang was fighting for control of the area, a notorious staging ground for drug distribution, and he got caught in a hail of bullets that nearly killed him and tore up one of his arms at the elbow. </p><div type="image" title="A man is seen, wide-eyed, looking directly at the camera." height="1000" width="1500" msid="93668298" hostid="261"></div><p>By 2012, the year Héctor was sent to the PGV for being an accomplice to a homicide, his two brothers had been killed. Humberto, the oldest, was gunned down near their home in Pinto Salinas in 2008. Junior, the youngest, died a similar death in 2011. Now, another son seemed to be heading down the same inexorable path.</p><p>Like most prisoners at the PGV, Héctor depended on his family, outside, to bring him things to sell at the market. In good times, he might make enough to pay La Causa, take care of his needs, and even send some profits home. </p><p>The best bet for making money was to set up a table selling crack, cocaine, base paste, marijuana and blunts. But even in this environment, where drugs could be sold and consumed out in the open, this line of work could be unpredictable and dangerous. Héctor liked the money; the money was useful to him. But selling drugs brought problems. So Héctor mostly avoided it. </p><p>At one point, he sold nails, screws, wires, and pieces of wood to inmates — coveted objects that inmates used to build improvised shacks. If he got his hands on some flour, he might set up a stand selling banana cake or Venezuelan arepas.</p><div type="image" title="A man lies on a bed with his mother." height="1000" width="1500" msid="93668300" hostid="261"></div><p>Whenever possible, he'd hoped to make enough money so his mother, Rosalia Rivero, who worked as a janitor and whom he playfully called "La Pucha," could travel from Caracas for a Visitors Day. On these visits, she would head straight to her son's room, willfully ignoring the strangeness she passed along the way. She was used to seeing drugs and weapons, and she associated both with losing two of her sons, and almost losing a third. </p><p>At the PGV, she found Héctor a changed man. Héctor was never an angel; nobody in Free Convict was. But now he was searching for something different. </p><p>Together with the rest of Free Convict, Héctor had resolved to take control of his life, and break the cycle that had put him on the frontlines of the street wars that were tearing apart Venezuela and that nobody had asked for. To do that, Héctor had to sharpen his talent, and believe in himself.</p><div type="image" title="Men are seen seated in what used to be a bell tower high up on a building." height="1000" width="1500" msid="93668301" hostid="261"></div><h2>Boom!</h2><p>By 2016, the situation in Venezuela had become catastrophic. Inflation was out of control and finding basic items had become nearly impossible. At the PGV, families were barely able to send help. </p><p>Inmates went from drinking good rum at parties to making their own alcohol, from fermenting banana skin, in plastic Gatorade bottles. Instead of manning tables piled high with drugs, inmates like Héctor scraped together money selling single cigarettes or hot chocolate. </p><p>La Causa had to be paid first. There was barely any money for food. </p><p>The beginning of the end of the PGV came in September of 2016. </p><p>Musicians and sports players had been brought in, along with the usual flood of friends and family from the outside, to celebrate the birthday of the PGV's big boss, Franklin "Viru Viru." </p><div type="image" title="An outdoor display of pictures and trophies." height="1000" width="1500" msid="93668302" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="Inmates at seen sleeping in makeshift hammocks and on the ground below." height="1000" width="1500" msid="93668303" hostid="261"></div><p>Then, suddenly, BOOM, a hand grenade explosion caused the prison's foundation to tremble. Smoke was everywhere. Some people screamed in agony, others ran in all directions. In the confusion, Los Luceros pointed their guns at each other, looking for signs of treason.</p><p>When the black cloud had cleared, there was a hellish scene of wounded people and dead bodies. Visitors and prisoners alike were among the almost 20 victims. </p><p>Afterwards, tension and fear were everywhere, and the prison divided into warring factions. Punishment, including murder, was more common, and even more random. </p><p>Seeing an opening, forces from the state finally stormed the prison. For two weeks, there was fighting, leading to an estimated 80 deaths. There was no water or electricity. Starving inmates killed their pets for food, or consumed whatever drugs they could find to fight off hunger. Tuberculosis was plaguing the prison and infected prisoners were dying daily. </p><p>When it was finally over, government soldiers emptied the PGV and inmates were sent to other detention centers around the country. Free Convict scrambled to stay in touch, but finding out who had ended up where was almost impossible.</p><p>Free Convict, which by then was better and more popular than ever, seemed to be dying. </p><p>Héctor ended up at Tocuyito, another prisoner-controlled prison, where he stayed for another two years.</p><h2>Caracas</h2><p>One day in 2020 — six years after I began documenting Free Convict at the PGV — I went to a recording studio in Caracas to meet up with the collective. Nearly all of them had been released, and they were trying to keep Free Convict's work alive from the outside. </p><p>Free in Caracas, there was still so much to navigate. The immediate problem was Héctor. </p><p>His family hadn't heard from him in three days. At first, the police said they had no record of him being arrested. Now, thanks to pressure from his family, they were saying he <em>had</em> been arrested, and would be released soon. We predicted he'd come to the studio directly, and were waiting for him there. </p><p>When he finally arrived, fear, rage, and frustration filled his eyes. He told us that he had been in his neighborhood with his cousin, known as "The Cat," when police arrived and shot his cousin dead. They'd then arrested Héctor, who now told us he'd been spared only thanks to a divine intervention.</p><div type="image" title="A man is seated with young boys seated all around him." height="1000" width="1500" msid="93668304" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="People are seen clustered together on a narrow strip above a passing river and beneath a bridge." height="1000" width="1500" msid="93668305" hostid="261"></div><p>We couldn't confirm Héctor's story, but there were plenty of others like it. Later that year, the United Nations would call on President Nicolas Maduro to disband various police units that had been behind extrajudicial killings and "crimes against humanity."</p><p>It was possible that Héctor had actually been spared because, since his release, he'd become relatively well-known both for his work with Free Convict and for his anti-violence and community-building work in prisons, schools, and other areas affected by violence and exclusion.</p><p>Having overcome so much in an upside-down Venezuela where police forces could turn their guns on civilians and prisoners controlled the prisons, Héctor is a survivor.  After so many close calls with death and so much adversity, he had done so much to rebuild his life and forge a new path. His mistakes were part of who he was, but the actions he had taken in his life because of those mistakes, and his skill in communicating the things he'd learned, made him a valued mentor to so many Caracus youths who were in a desperate search for new paths to walk away from violence.</p><p>But for all the progress Héctor had made in his life, he was still at the mercy of the arbitrary violence of Venezuela. Together, we all wondered where Héctor was safest: In Caracas, trying to contribute to his community while at the mercy of the arbitrary violence of Venezuela, and possibly at the hands of Venezuelan police, or back under La Rutina. </p><div type="image" title="A man is seen in reflection." height="1000" width="1500" msid="93668306" hostid="261"></div><p><em>Oscar B.
