Around 40 per cent of Indians surveyed have been defrauded when shopping online during the festive season, finds a study. The study was conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of <keyword id="179697" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="norton" source="Orion">Norton</keyword>, a global leader in Cyber safety, which released the Indian findings that explored attitudes toward cyber security and online shopping during the festive season. According to the findings, two-thirds of Indian adults surveyed were concerned about their personal details being compromised (78 per cent), being defrauded by a third-party retailer (77 per cent), buying or receiving a refurbished device as a gift (72 per cent), and a device they receive as a gift being hacked (69 per cent). "Recently, there has been an increase in the number of online shoppers, and with that the rise in online shopping scams, gift card frauds, postal delivery frauds," said <keyword id="2022067" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ritesh-chopra" source="Orion">Ritesh Chopra</keyword>, Norton Director India and <keyword id="497507" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="saarc-countries" source="Orion">SAARC Countries</keyword> at NortonLifeLock. About 78 per cent of Indian adults surveyed agree that spending time online via their connected devices helps them feel more connected during the festive season, and 74 per cent say that it helps their mental well-being. Sixty-five per cent of Indian adults say their mental well-being would suffer if they could not access their connected devices during the festive season, the report mentioned. "Our Norton report also suggests that many Indian adults have been defrauded while doing online shopping, the average loss of those surveyed is Rs 6,216," he added. His actions were registered as a sign of protest over the presence of Pakistan’s minister for Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), Muhammad Saeed, at the event. PoK has been a hot-button issue between India and Pakistan due to its strategic importance to both nations. And never before, at least during a SAARC summit, has the PoK minister been invited to attend the negotiations since its underlying mission is to achieve regional cooperation and the PoK issue is in direct contradiction of that directive. Singh reportedly left the meeting as soon as Saeed was invited to speak at the dais during the event’s Chambers of Commerce and Industry meeting. The doom of SAARC? Prior to this, the most recent incident where Pakistan reportedly tried to ‘legitimise’ PoK in the eyes of the international community was when Pakistan’s new Prime Minister, Imran Khan, was sworn in. India maintains that Kashmir is an integral part of the country and doesn’t recognise the authority of a ‘minister’ for the people in PoK. This SAARC meeting was the first to be initiated in a long time. In 2016, India pulled out of the 19th SAARC summit that was also supposed to hosted by Islamabad in retaliation of the terrorist attack in Uri on an Indian Army base. After India pulled out, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Afghanistan also pulled out <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/world/neighbours/story/uri-terror-attack-now-bangladesh-slams-pakistan-terms-india-friend-since-1971-342238-2016-09-21">stating</a> that, “We are against terror, against terrorist country and against any country that supports terror.” There have been no subsequent SAARC summits since then. Pakistan has been accused of repeatedly trying to derail international negotiations by bringing up the issue of PoK during international summits, especially those presided over by the United Nations. India’s stance has been that while it too agrees with the gravitas of the situation, its repeated resurgence on international platforms undercuts a lot of other important policy decisions that have be addressed.

"I appreciate the role of governments, UN agencies, NGOs and civil society for the improvements made by the SAARC region over the years in reducing <keyword id="22387194" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="teenage-pregnancy" source="keywords">teenage pregnancy</keyword>," said Ambassador Golam Sarwar, the Secretary General of SAARC. "But the region still has a long way to go. I call upon everyone to resolutely address the root causes including child marriage, access to adolescent health education, and removing social stigma in managing the teenage population of the SAARC region," he said. Every year, nearly 6,500 adolescent girls die in childbirth in South Asia, according to the analysis by UNICEF, WHO and UNFPA. Most of them are child brides who have limited or negligible power and autonomy over their reproductive health or lives. When young girls give birth, their lives can be at risk as they are not yet physically ready to give birth. Thousands more girls are forced to drop out of school, face stigma, rejection, violence, unemployment as well as lifelong social challenges. Forty-nine per cent of young girls in South Asia are not in education, employment or training - the highest in the world, the press release said. "We must do better for adolescent girls, particularly those who are married, pregnant or parents. In addition to hurdles to learn, get good healthcare and eat nutritious food, they are denied the opportunity to build skills and start businesses -- everything they need as parents to thrive and fulfil their potential," said Sanjay Wijesekera, UNICEF Regional Director for South Asia. "We must work together and invest in opportunities to unleash the promise of more than 170 million adolescent girls in South Asia. Doing so would be transformative for this region," he said. Government and UN officials, adolescent girls, as well as civil society representatives from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have participated in the dialogue and reaffirmed their commitment to providing better services to support pregnant adolescent girls and young mothers. This includes opportunities to learn, set up their businesses, and earn a living. The event held in Kathmandu over July 11-12 was jointly organised by SAARC, WHO, UNICEF, and UNFPA and was inaugurated by the Secretary General of SAARC, Ambassador Golam Sarwar. Adolescent mothers have a much higher risk of dying from maternal causes, compared to women in their 20s and 30s. "It is high time that we reverse this trend. The unique physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and sexual development during adolescence necessitates special attention in national and international policies. Effective strategies to tackle adolescent pregnancy require cross-sectoral collaboration and equitable access to a variety of services," said Saima Wazed, Regional Director, WHO South-East Asia.

The electric cars, based on the Avinya concept, will now be developed on JLR's Electrified Modular Architecture in exchange for a royalty fee, according to the press release issued on Thursday. "Avinya stands for 'Innovation' and represents our vision for a new paradigm in personal mobility. Being built on an architecture that is equipped with the latest advances in new-age technology, software and artificial intelligence, Avinya will spawn a new breed of world-class EVs, with global standards in efficiency and range. Tata Motors' subsidiary signs MoU with Jaguar to develop premium EVs

The exports of smartphones from India is expected to cross $1.5 billion (by value) this year -- constituting 98 per cent of the <keyword id="10319571" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="total-mobile-phones">total mobile phones</keyword> exported from the country, a new report said on Monday. A total of 12.8 million mobile phones were exported from India from January to September this year and of these, 10.9 million units were smartphones, according to <keyword id="10319572" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="market-research-firm-techarc">market research firm techARC</keyword>. Samsung led the overall mobile exports with 11.6 million units, followed by <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword> at 0.6 million shipments, in the January-September period. The South Korean giant exported 9.8 million units of smartphones, followed by Xiaomi at 0.6 million and Lava at 0.2 million smartphones. The other smartphone exporters in the top 5 were Vivo and <keyword id="2210217" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="oneplus">OnePlus</keyword>. "Lava has emerged as the 'torchbearer' Indian brand which is not only the lone domestic brand exporting mobiles but also pecks in top 5 brands," the report said. Indian brands are now exporting to extended markets like the US. Seven brands are exporting mobile phones from India to the US. <keyword id="8442396" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung-A51">Samsung A51</keyword> is the most exported smartphone from India. "India has been exporting mobiles to destinations like the UAE and neighbouring <keyword id="8470" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SAARC">SAARC</keyword> countries for quite some time. However, 'Make in India' initiative has made India a truly global exporter of mobile phones," said Faisal Kawoosa, Founder and Chief Analyst, techARC. "Today, India is exporting to 24 countries, some of which are further re-exporting, like the UAE, to other markets, making India-made phones available to millions of users," he added. Covid-19 had a severe impact on the exports, with volume sharply falling to 1.2 million in the April-June quarter from 7.4 million in the January-March period. The production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme worth around Rs 1.45 lakh crore in favour of 16 electronics companies including 10 mobile handset manufacturers will further strengthen the country's positioning in the global mobile market, according to the report.

India smartphone exports touch 11 million till September 2020 – Samsung leads with 9.8 million units

New Delhi, Mar 18 () Infrastructure firm KEC International on Wednesday said it has secured new orders worth Rs 1,047 crore across various business verticals. The company has secured orders worth Rs 669 crore for transmission and distribution projects in India, South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries, Middle East and the Americas, KEC International said in a regulatory filing. Its civil business has secured orders of Rs 153 crore for defence and residential projects in India. "The solar business has secured orders worth Rs 104 crore for solar projects in India and Middle East," it said. The cables business, has secured orders of Rs 121 crore for various types of cables/cabling projects, it added. "We are delighted with the new order wins secured across our business verticals amidst the current market scenario. "The orders in transmission and distribution (T&amp;D) will enable us to further strengthen our portfolio in the international markets. We are particularly encouraged by the second order in the defence segment secured by our civil business," KEC International Ltd MD and CEO Vimal Kejriwal said. Eurosport India secures rights to broadcast Tokyo 2020 Summer Paralympic Games

New Delhi, Jan 6 () Godrej Consumer Products on Monday said demand in the third quarter for this fiscal continued to be challenging, impacted by a general consumption slowdown, stressing that it expects gradual improvement in consumer demand in the upcoming quarters.
 "During the quarter (ended December 31, 2019), we witnessed relatively mixed demand across some of our geographies of operations... In India, demand continued to be challenging, impacted by a general consumption slowdown," Godrej Consumer Products (GCPL) said in a filing to BSE. 
 Despite weak demand conditions, we continued our marginally higher than mid single digit volume growth trend during the quarter," it added.
 The uplift in volume growth, it said, was led by gradual recovery in household insecticides, new product launches, effective marketing campaigns and tactical consumer offers.
 The sales value growth also mirrors the trend of past few quarter's sales value growth.
 "We look forward to a gradual improvement in consumer demand in the quarters ahead driven by good monsoon and government stimuli," it added.
 In Indonesia, the company recorded close to high single digit constant currency sales growths, amidst an improving demand environment in home and personal care space.
 The growths, it said, are driven by new product launches and gradual expansion of general trade distribution (project rise).
 "In GAUM (Godrej Africa, USA, Middle East), we saw a good recovery with higher than mid single digit constant currency sales growth, thus reversing the trend of the past few quarters," it said.
 The performance was driven by improved performance in South Africa and rest of Africa and Middle East cluster.
 "We continue to drive scale up of wet hair care and the relaunch of Darling brand in dry hair category along with expansion in distribution to deliver sales growth for the year," it added.

Godrej Consumer Products expects gradual improvement in demand in upcoming quarters

By Yoshita Singh New York, May 12 () India has shown leadership in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and has been on the "front foot" in helping other countries combat the disease, the country's Consul General here has said, noting that the ingenuity and skills of its people will help the country's economy to bounce back.Sandeep Chakravorty was speaking during a virtual discussion organised by Indian-American community leader Jagdish Sewhani here on India's response to the COVID-19."From a policy point of view, India is very clear that we have to stop the virus and not let it spread" and the government is undertaking all efforts to contain the virus," Chakravorty, India's Consul General in New York, said.Addressing members of the Indian-American community and organisations participating in the discussion, he said India has been on the "front foot" in helping other countries, including by sending shipments of essential medical supplies to various nations, including the US."We have shown leadership in the G-20 and the SAARC countries," in efforts to fight the pandemic, he said.Chakravorty said India's strategy for combating COVID-19 has several elements - lockdown, medical preparedness, support to those who have been affected by disruption in their lives as well as international cooperation.He noted that though the economy will be impacted, "it is really going to be our ingenuity, our skills, our ability in how quickly we can bounce back." "Our priority was in saving lives," Chakravorty said, adding that the economy can rebound but lives lost once will never be able to recover."I think the way India has tackled with the COVID-19 crisis will really provide India with leadership in the world because we can really bounce back. For a promoter-based company, this is a big big issue. No promoter will put money unless he can come to India to supervise, monitor and manage his investments," he said.Sewhani stressed that with changes in the tax law, such visits are quite restrained and prohibitive as a foreign investor cannot stay in India for more than 180 days."This is exactly what China has tackled well," he said, adding that in order to encourage foreign investors, China changed the tax laws to allow them to stay for six years and only if they stay in China for more than 183 days in any one of those six years, are they taxed on global income. "We must adopt something similar to encourage promoter driven companies to invest in India. Such encouragement will make a success out of 'Make In India' policy, helping the country become not only a five trillion dollar economy but a 10 trillion economy in future," he said.Commenting on the massive repatriation exercise 'Vande Bharat' to bring back stranded Indians from abroad, Chakravorty said the government is working very hard to ensure those most in distress, such as people with serious medical conditions, are brought back home as a priority. Talking of other subjects, Modi, who secured a first class in his course of MA (Political Science), had scored 237 out of 400 marks in the first level exam. He scored 61, 48, 60, and 68 marks in 'Indian Politics', 'International Relations', 'Recent Political Thoughts' and 'Comparative Politics'. 
 
In the second level of his MA exams, he went on to score 262 out of 400 marksm with 64, 62, 69 and 67 marks in 'European and Social Political Thoughts', 'Modern India', 'Political Analysis', and 'Concept Tools/Political, Psychological, Social'.

The premier technological education institutes, <keyword id="55119" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Technology">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword> (IIT) is going international. No not by expanding the campuses but inviting foreign nationals to be a part of the programmes. As planned, IITs will be holding entrance examinations outside India and there would be a 10% additional seats to accommodate foreign students. 
 
"Foreign candidates will have to qualify the JEE advanced examination for an IIT seat. The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) for entry to MTech courses will be held in these six countries as well," an official informed the Economic Times. Foreign candidates, however, will not have to take the JEE main examination. 
 
The official clarified that the there would be no decrease in the number of the seats for Indian students. "The 10% intake is in addition to the existing seats available in each of the 23 IITs,” he added. 
 Also, 20,000 more candidates will be eligible to write the exam after clearing JEE main, thus taking the total number to 2,20,000. The examination will be held in six countries outside India - Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, UAE, Nepal and <keyword id="6356662" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Singapore">Singapore</keyword>. The number of foreign students can't exceed 10% of the total seats in each course offered by the IITs and ISM-Dhanbad, as per the news report on the ET. There is no quota in this category. Also the cut-off for the aggregate marks in Class XII for SC and ST candidates has been reduced from 70% to 65% in JEE advanced 2017. 
 
Increase in fees Candidates who register for entrance exams after due date would be allowed to fill up the forms after paying a late fee of Rs 500. There has been an increase in registration fee from Rs 1,200 from Rs 1,000 for girls and reserved category students and to Rs 2,400 from Rs 2,000 for others. Students coming from <keyword id="8470" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="SAARC">SAARC</keyword> countries will need to pay $135 (Rs 9000) and those from the other countries would pay $270 (Rs 18000).
