A <keyword id="22136971" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Swiss-Court" source="keywords">swiss court</keyword> on Friday found members of the UK's wealthiest family guilty of exploiting domestic workers at a luxury villa in Geneva. The court, however, acquitted the family members charged with <keyword id="19915705" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="human-trafficking" source="keywords">human trafficking</keyword> of their servants, The New York Times reported. On Friday, the court sentenced Prakash and Kamal Hinduja to four years and six months in prison, while Ajay and Namrata Hinduja were sentenced to four years. It also directed them to pay about USD 950,000 in compensation and USD 300,000 in procedural fees. Prosecutors had charged four members of the UK family - Prakash Hinduja; his wife, Kamal Hinduja; their son Ajay Hinduja; and their daughter-in-law, Namrata Hinduja with trafficking and exploiting several workers from India. The family members were accused of confiscating the passports of the employees and forcing them to work 16 hours a day or longer without overtime pay in the villa. Lawyers representing the Hinduja's had rejected the allegations. Najib Ziazi, a business adviser for the family who also faced charges, was found complicit in the exploitation. In a statement sent through email, Romain Jordan, a lawyer representing the Hinduja's members of the family said they were "disappointed" by the decision and had filed an appeal to a higher court, according to The New York Times report. The statement further reads, "The family has full faith in the judicial process and remains determined to defend themselves." According to the indictment, some domestic workers, who took care of children or housework, were paid as little as 10,000 rupees a month (about USD 120 currently). It said that many of the workers were from poor backgrounds in India and had toiled "from dawn until late in the evening" without getting paid for working overtime. The indictment said that they received salaries below Geneva's <keyword id="20147149" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="minimum-wage" source="keywords">minimum wage</keyword> for domestic workers and money was paid into Indian bank accounts that they could not easily get access to. Prosecutors had alleged that the Hinduja family had taken the passports of domestic workers and told them not to leave the villa, where they slept in bunk beds in a windowless basement room. According to the indictment, the workers were expected to be available at all times, including on trips to France and Monaco, where they worked under the same conditions. The Hinduja family's lawyer, Jordan, rejects the allegations, calling it "exaggerated and biased allegations." In a statement issued before the verdict, he said, "The members of the Hinduja family vigorously deny these allegations," The New York Times reported. He, however, said that the agreement was "confidential" and that the plaintiffs had withdrawn their complaints. Star power: Indian billionaires with Pisces zodiac sign had a good run last year

The chairman of Reliance Industries Mukesh Ambani surged to the top spot as India’s richest man. India has added 38 <keyword id="6393637" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="billionaires" source="Orion">billionaires</keyword> to its rich list, taking the total tally to 259. Even as the developed world is staring at a recession, India is cementing its position as an economic powerhouse. Nearly 65% of people in the rich list amassed a combined wealth of close to $1 trillion. This is akin to the combined GDP of Singapore and the UAE, Hurun said. Mukesh Ambani surpassed Gautam Adani, who dropped to the second spot, in spite of only a 2% growth in his wealth in the last one year. After Adani’s wealth more than halved in the last year, the gap between Ambani and Adani wealth widened by ₹3,30,000 crore. The top 10 has seen a lot of upheaval in the last one year – as only Shiv Nadar and Cyrus Poonawala were able to hold on to the positions they held last year. Gautam Adani’s brother Vinod Shantilal Adani who was the sixth richest Indian last year, exited the top 10 list this year. He is now the twelfth richest Indian after his wealth dropped by 37%. The other notable exit is Uday Kotak, the chairman of Kotak Mahindra Bank who is now the 11th richest man in the county after his wealth dropped 6% last year. However, their average wealth has decreased by 9.3%. The India Rich List added 273 new entrants and 38 new billionaires over the last year. The number of dollar billionaires also went up to 259, up 38 as compared to last year. “The trends prove that India is a shining moon in a world that is staring at recession. While the China Rich List has dropped 10% for each of this year and last year, both in terms of average wealth and in terms of the number of people that make the list. India is closing the gap,” said Anas Rahman Junaid, MD and Chief Researcher, Hurun India. India has 259 billionaires, up 38 compared to last year. While industrial products, metals &amp; mining added the greatest number of new entrants to the list. Pharma still holds the numero uno position and contributed 133 entrants to the list. “Over the past five years, many entrepreneurs have witnessed extraordinary wealth growth, some experiencing an astonishing 1,000% surge. Construction and engineering emerge as the top gainers in the top 100 list, followed closely by pharmaceuticals which has a cut-off of ₹20,000 crore,” said Anirudha Taparia, co-founder and joint CEO, 360 ONE Wealth. Funding winter &amp; founders’ wealth While 264 in the Indian rich list saw their wealth drop in the last one year, there were as many as 55 dropouts. The most notable of the dropouts is Byju Raveendran. The founder of edtech Byju’s exited the list on the back of investor markdowns. The funding winter and its ripple effects led to startup founders on the list experiencing a collective wealth dip of ₹85,000 crore. Recent policies, like the retrospective GST imposition on gaming companies and the angel tax and so on, could potentially hinder long-term wealth generation by startups, Hurun said. However, a few IPOs that stumbled last year did make a comeback. As new-age internet companies gain in value, entrepreneurs like Deepinder Goyal of Zomato and Yashish Dahiya of PB Fintech have seen their wealth increase by over 70%. Startup wealth creation will persist, albeit within a changing landscape, Junaid said. The IPO stars: Public issues and rich list debuts The stock markets also rewarded many public debuts and made their founders into billionaires. Ramesh Kunhikannan’s Kaynes Technology made a strong stock market debut. And he entered the list with a wealth of ₹8,200 crore. The spectacular listing gains provided by stock market debuts of many companies have pulled their owners into the rich list. Some of them include Jagdish Prasad Chowdhary of Titagarh Wagons, Ranjit Pendurthi of Archean Chemical Industries and Ajay P Thakker &amp; family of Jupiter Life Line Hospitals. Pavan Kumar Bajaj and Karan Bajaj of Electronics Mart India and Harsha Engineers’ Harish Rangwala and Rajendra Shantilal Shah too entered the coveted list of richest Indians after their stocks skyrocketed on debut. But there is money to be made in private markets too. Manish Kejriwal of Kedaara Capital became the first Indian Private Equity fund manager to enter the list.

Adani Enterprises Ltd, the flagship firm of <keyword id="21718" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="asia" source="Orion">Asia</keyword>'s richest person, will raise funds through the issue of fresh equity shares, it said in a stock exchange filing. The public offering will help Adani Enterprises Ltd (AEL), which is the business incubator for the group and currently houses businesses from civil aviation to data centres, diversify the shareholder base and build its credibility and acceptance among investors. Promoters currently hold 72.63 per cent shares of AEL. Of the remaining 27.37 per cent, almost 20 per cent is held by insurance companies and foreign portfolio investors. Shares of AEL have more than doubled in the last year, giving it a market value of Rs 4.46 lakh crore. Benchmark S&amp;P BSE Sensex index has risen just 5.4 per cent over the same period. In the stock exchange filing, AEL said its board of directors met on Friday and approved the "raising of funds by way of a further public offering through a fresh issue of equity shares by the company aggregating up to Rs 20,000 crore." The company will seek shareholder approval for the offering through a postal ballot. The Adani group has previously stated that it is working on plans to increase the free float. Adani started AEL in 1988 with the commodity trading business and used it as an incubator of new businesses before spinning them off into separately listed firms. The group now has a significant presence in ports, airports, roads, power, renewable energy, electricity transmission, gas distribution, real estate, FMCG, cement and financial services. Recently, the group also entered the media business. Ports, power, transmission, green energy, gas and edible oil businesses are separately listed companies. The group has made forays into a diverse array of businesses with dealmaking in recent months. It recently acquired Holcim Ltd's India cement units for USD 10.5 billion, India's second-biggest deal of the year. Leading industrialists to take part in Punjab investors' summit starting Thursday

New Delhi, Mar 17 () As many as 14 power plants with total power generation capacity of 13,830 mega watt (MW) have been issued show cause notices by the central pollution control board (CPCB) for not complying with environment norms, Parliament was informed on Tuesday.The CPCB has also issued directions to another four power plants with total generation capacity of 1,495 MW for not obliging to environmental provisions, Minister of Power R K Singh said while replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha.While 14 power plants having total generation capacity of 13,830 MW were issued show cause notices by the CPCB on January 31, 2020, another 11 units of four power plants with total generation capacity of 1,495 MW were issued directions on February 26, 2020, he said.Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&amp;CC) notified new environmental norms for particulate matter, sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), water consumption and mercury for thermal power plants (TPPs) on December 7 December 2015, the minister said. In order to ensure uninterrupted power supply position in the country, he said, a phased implementation plan to be rolled out by 2022 for installation of Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) in plants for a capacity of 1,61,402 MW and upgradation of electrostatic precipitator in plants for a capacity of 64,525 MW was prepared by Central Electricity Authority (CEA) in consultation with the stakeholders and this plan was submitted to MoEF&amp;CC on October 13, 2017.Accordingly, on the directions of MoEF&amp;CC, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) issued directions under section 5 of Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 to TPPs. CPCB has informed that those TPPs which fail to comply with new emission norms by the specified timelines are considered to be non-complying and are liable for penal action including closure of the plant and imposition of environmental compensation, Singh said.The CEA has also sent letters to thermal power stations for strict compliance of existing Environment norms within the stipulated time given by MoEF&amp;CC/CPCB.Singh said, "So far, CPCB has issued show cause notice on 31.01.2020 under Section 5 of Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 to 31 units of 14 TPPs as to why non-complying units of the plant should not be closed and environmental compensation be imposed for continuing non-compliance of CPCB directions. CPCB has also issued directions/show cause notice for closure under Section 5 of Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 on 26.02.2020 to 11 units of 4 TPPs."The list of those served with show cause notices included Vizag Hinduja TPP, HNPCL, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, Sri Damodaram Sanjeevaiah TPP, APPDCL, SPSR Nellore, Rajiv Gandhi TPP, HPGCL, Hisar, Haryana, National Capital Thermal Power Station, NTPC Dadri, Gautam Budh Nagar, U.P, Harduaganj Thermal Power Station, UPRVUNL, Aligarh in U P, among others. 14 power plants get notices for not complying with environment norms

According to the Hurun Global Rich List India, the demonetisation drive which started on November 8, 2016 eroded the wealth of 11 individuals to below the threshold limit of $1 billion. 
 
The report featured 132 Indian-origin billionnaires with a wealth of $1 bilion or more. 
 
"India had a tough year because of disruptive government policies such as demonetisation drive," said Anas Rahman Junaid, Managing Director and Chief Researcher, Hurun Report India. 
 
"However, on a long term perspective, we do believe that such transparent currency economics will have a positive impact for the entrepreneurs." 
 The list ranked <keyword id="6355199" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries">Reliance Industries</keyword> Chairman <keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>, 59 as the richest Indian. Ambani topped the list of 132 individuals with a fortune of Rs 175,400 crore ($26 billion). 
 
"In addition to his aggressive plans for his oil business, Mukesh Ambani is now focusing on his new telecom venture, Jio, which has acquired more than 100 crore customers in less than 6 months," the report said. 
 "This aggressive price war has dragged down other local players such as Idea, Airtel; In fact Idea registered a record loss of Rs 384 crore in Q3 2016 and is planning on a merger with <keyword id="15492" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vodafone">Vodafone</keyword> to survive the competition."

Desperate patients have been traveling hundreds of miles, searching helplines and social media, to find hospitals with enough capacity. The worsening situation forced British Prime Minister Boris Johnson this week to cancel a visit to the country. The UK and the US have also issued strong travel advisories for India.On Saturday, when 261,394 new cases were reported in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi <a href="https://twitter.com/ndtv/status/1383419909128933377?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1383419909128933377%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bloombergquint.com%2Fcoronavirus-outbreak%2Fhope-and-heartbreak-on-indian-covid-twittertter">boasted</a> about the size of his election rally in West Bengal, where a huge crowd was crammed together.Rallies have taken place in West Bengal and three other states, with thousands attending, without much adherence to COVID-19 precautions.This reflects how dramatic India's turnaround has been with the coronavirus. Early this year, experts hypothesized that this country of 1.3 billion people had reached herd immunity as cases steadily fell. The government's own modeling study suggested the country's outbreak would be over by February. In January, a health minister <a href="https://www.livemint.com/news/india/india-has-flattened-covid-19-curve-no-new-cases-in-one-fifth-of-country-govt-11611824857809.html">said</a> India had "successfully contained" COVID-19.Weddings, functions, and political rallies resumed as politicians encouraged a return to normal.Now, India has more than 2 million known active cases, compared with 200,000 in January. Daily reported cases are three times as high as the peak of the first wave in September, with 314,835 announced on Thursday.<div type="image" title="COVID Daily cases India graph" height="2400" width="3400" msid="82202329" hostid="261"></div>A "double mutant" variant - which contains notable mutations that had been separately identified in two previous variants of the original virus - has taken hold.Insider spoke with people on the ground about the extent of devastation this wave has caused as well as the constant challenge of enforcing restrictions at mass gatherings."Things have worsened this time around," said Dr. Sonali Vaid, who previously worked for the World Health Organization and is now helping patients find beds in New Delhi."Many patients with severely low oxygen-saturation levels have had to manage at home, some with dire consequences, due to lack of beds," Vaid added. "Things weren't as bad last year."Despite this, the country's largest religious gathering went ahead. The centuries-old Kumbh Mela sees tens of millions of Hindu pilgrims travel to bathe en masse in rivers in a ritual meant to cleanse them of their sins. D. Rajaram saw his personal fortune rise six-fold, to Rs 17,800 crore. His ranking has risen 127 spots to No. 38, according to the Hurun India Rich List for 2015. There are 76 new faces among the 296 who made it to the Hurun India Rich List this year, with the cut-off level being personal wealth of Rs 1,600 crore. 	Most of these technology and internet companies have raised significant amounts of private equity capital at substantial valuations over the past year. Flipkart's latest fund raise valued the firm at $15 billion, and Snapdeal's valued it close to $5 billion. Most of the new-age startup founders are also exceptional in that they are self-made; 85% of those in the list are part of family businesses.
 

	"Despite the weakening of the stock market and the rupee, the Hurun India Rich List expanded by 76 entrepreneurs, showing the resilience and dynamism of the Indian private sector," said Anas Rahman Junaid, India head, Hurun Report. The Hurun Report was started by researcher Rupert Hoogewerf. The first report, in 1999, was on the rich in China, and Hoogewerf has since been regularly bringing out a China rich list. The India initiative began two years ago.
 At the top, Mukesh Ambani was followed by Dilip Sanghvi of Sun Pharma, S P Hinduja &amp; family of the Hinduja Group, Shiv Nadar of HCL, and Pallonji Mistry of the <keyword id="261354" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shapoorji-Pallonji-Group">Shapoorji Pallonji Group</keyword>. For the first time, Wipro chairman <keyword id="6419840" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Azim-Premji">Azim Premji</keyword> fell off the top 5 rankings. He's now at the seventh spot, with his net worth plummeting 59% to Rs 51,900 crore.
