The hidden woes of being in a relationship with a startup founder

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Private equity giant Carlyle just promoted 32 people to partner and 39 to managing director.</li><li>A quarter of the promotions were women, who are traditionally underrepresented on Wall Street.</li></ul>These 71 Carlyle execs have a lot to be thankful for this holiday season.The Washington, DC-based buyout firm, which boasts $369 billions in assets, <a href="https://www.carlyle.com/media-room/news-release-archive/carlyle-announces-2022-partners-and-managing-directors">promoted 32</a> of its 2,100-person workforce to partner, the highest status one can achieve at the firm. Some 39 other employees were named managing director, also on Tuesday. The annual promotion process is a closely watched rite of passge on Wall Street because it tends to signal who are the biggest earners and power players. Goldman Sachs kicked off the process earlier this month <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meet-5-of-goldman-sachs-newest-partners-2022-11">when it promoted 80 people</a> to partner status, its largest class since 2016.Carlyle's promotions took place across 26 of its 29 offices around the world and will go into effect on January 1. All three of its main business segments were represented, including global private equity, global credit and global investment solutions, according to a spokesperson. Roughly 25% of the promotions were women, and 4% were from underrepresnted groups, the spokesperson said. This year's group included eight real estate executives, two working on human capital, and one focused on DEI, or diversity, equity, and inclusion. The ultra-strong fibers outperform the mechanical characteristics of many synthetic materials as well as steel," Urbas said in the release. Military researchers think spider silk may keep US troops lighter and cooler in combat

"Like Under Armour, for real," she <a href="http://gazette.com/air-force-academy-cadets-gravy-like-goo-is-a-bullet-stopping-marvel/article/1602586" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a>.The materials <a href="http://gazette.com/air-force-academy-cadets-gravy-like-goo-is-a-bullet-stopping-marvel/article/1602586" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">reminded her</a> of Oobleck, a non-Newtonian fluid - which thickens when force is applied - made of cornstarch and water and named after a substance from a Dr. Seuss book, and she <a href="https://www.airforcetimes.com/articles/air-force-academy-cadet-creates-goo-that-stops-bullets" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">became interested</a> in producing a material that would stop bullets without shattering. An adviser <a href="https://www.airforcetimes.com/articles/air-force-academy-cadet-creates-goo-that-stops-bullets" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">suggested</a> swapping in a thickening fluid for the epoxy, which hardened when it dried."Up to that point, it was the coolest thing I'd done as a cadet," Weir, set to graduate this spring, <a href="https://www.airforcetimes.com/articles/air-force-academy-cadet-creates-goo-that-stops-bullets" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">told</a> Air Force Times.But soon thereafter she <a href="https://www.usafa.edu/cadet-professor-improve-body-armor-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">had to switch</a> majors from materials chemistry to military strategies. That presented a challenge to continuing the research, but she eventually teamed up with Ryan Burke, a military and strategic studies professor at the Academy.Burke, who served as a Marine, was familiar with the cumbersome nature of current body armor, and he was enthused about Weir's project. "When she came to me with this idea, I said 'let's do it,'" he <a href="https://www.usafa.edu/cadet-professor-improve-body-armor-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a>. "Even if it is a miserable failure, I was interested in trying."<a href="http://www.9news.com/news/local/next/watch-this-fabric-invented-by-an-air-force-academy-cadet-stop-a-bullet/438654258">NBC/KUSA 9 News</a>Bullets flattened during tests of Weir and Burke's prototype.The science behind the material is <a href="http://www.9news.com/news/local/next/watch-this-fabric-invented-by-an-air-force-academy-cadet-stop-a-bullet/438654258" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">not new</a>, and Burke <a href="https://www.airforcetimes.com/articles/air-force-academy-cadet-creates-goo-that-stops-bullets" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">expected</a> the vast defense industry to have pursued such a substance already. But a search through previous studies found no such work, and researchers and chemists at the Air Force Civil Engineer Center said the idea was worth looking into.They began work during the latter half of 2016 using the Academy's firing range, weapons, and a high-speed camera. Burke <a href="http://gazette.com/air-force-academy-cadets-gravy-like-goo-is-a-bullet-stopping-marvel/article/1602586" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">got in touch</a> with Marine Corps contacts who provided testing materials. In the lab, Weir would <a href="http://www.9news.com/news/local/next/watch-this-fabric-invented-by-an-air-force-academy-cadet-stop-a-bullet/438654258" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">make</a> the mixture using a KitchenAid mixer and plastic utensils. It would then be placed in vacuum-sealed bags, flattened into <a href="http://gazette.com/air-force-academy-cadets-gravy-like-goo-is-a-bullet-stopping-marvel/article/1602586" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">quarter-inch layers</a>, and inserted into a swatch of Kevlar.At first, during tests with a 9 mm pistol, they made little headway. "Bullets kept going straight through the material with little sign of stopping," Weir <a href="https://www.airforcetimes.com/articles/air-force-academy-cadet-creates-goo-that-stops-bullets" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">told</a> Air Force Times. After revisiting their work and redoing <a href="https://www.airforcetimes.com/articles/air-force-academy-cadet-creates-goo-that-stops-bullets" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">the layering pattern</a>, they returned to the firing range <a href="https://www.usafa.edu/cadet-professor-improve-body-armor-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">on December 9</a>.<a href="http://www.9news.com/news/local/next/watch-this-fabric-invented-by-an-air-force-academy-cadet-stop-a-bullet/438654258">NBC/KUSA 9 News</a>The bullet-stopping material developed by Weir and Burke, during the mixing process.Apprehensive, Weir fired on the material. "Hayley, I think it stopped it," Burke <a href="https://www.usafa.edu/cadet-professor-improve-body-armor-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a> after reviewing the video. It was the first time their material had stopped a bullet.This year, they traveled to the Air Force Civil Engineering Center to present their work and up the ante on their tests.Weir's material was <a href="https://www.usafa.edu/cadet-professor-improve-body-armor-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">able to stop</a> a 9 mm round, a .40 Smith &amp; Wesson round, and eventually a .44 Magnum round - all fired at close range.During <a href="https://www.airforcetimes.com/articles/air-force-academy-cadet-creates-goo-that-stops-bullets" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">the tests</a>, 9 mm rounds went through most the material's layers before getting caught in the fiber backing. The .40 caliber round was stopped by the third layer, while the .44 Magnum round was stopped by the first layer.The .44 Magnum round - which has been used to hunt elephants - is "a gigantic bullet," Weir <a href="https://www.airforcetimes.com/articles/air-force-academy-cadet-creates-goo-that-stops-bullets" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">told</a> Air Force Times. "This is the highest caliber we have stopped so far." Because it could stop that round, the material <a href="http://www.afcec.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/1170093/usafa-cadet-develops-potential-life-saving-material/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">could be certified</a> as type 3 body armor, which is usually worn by Air Force security personnel.The harder the impact from the bullet, the more the molecules in the material responded, <a href="http://gazette.com/air-force-academy-cadets-gravy-like-goo-is-a-bullet-stopping-marvel/article/1602586" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">yielding better resistance</a>. "The greater the force, the greater the hardening or thickening effect," Burke <a href="https://www.airforcetimes.com/articles/air-force-academy-cadet-creates-goo-that-stops-bullets" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a>."We're very pleased," <a href="http://www.afcec.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/1170093/usafa-cadet-develops-potential-life-saving-material/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a> Dr. Jeff Owens, a senior research chemist with the Air Force Civil Engineering Center's requirements, research, and development division. "We now understand more about what the important variables are, so now we're going to go back and pick all the variables apart, optimize each one, and see if we can get up to a higher level of protection."GettyThe model Weir and Burke created uses <a href="https://www.usafa.edu/cadet-professor-improve-body-armor-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">75% less fabric</a> than standard military-style body armor. It also has the potential for use as a protective lining on vehicles and aircraft and in tents that would <a href="https://www.airforcetimes.com/articles/air-force-academy-cadet-creates-goo-that-stops-bullets" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">protect their occupants</a> from shrapnel or gunfire."It's going to make a difference for Marines in the field," Burke <a href="http://gazette.com/air-force-academy-cadets-gravy-like-goo-is-a-bullet-stopping-marvel/article/1602586" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a>.On the civilian side, the material could aid emergency responders in active-shooter situations."I don't think it has actually set in how big this can get," Weir <a href="http://www.afcec.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/1170093/usafa-cadet-develops-potential-life-saving-material/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a> in early May. "I think this is going to take off and it's going to be really awesome."While the ultimate use of the material remains to be seen, the US Army and Marine Corps are reportedly looking for ways lighten the body armor their personnel are currently using.A study by the Government Accountability Office, <a href="https://www.armytimes.com/articles/gao-study-looks-at-body-armor" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">noted</a> by Army Times, highlighted joint efforts to lower the weight of current body armor, which on average weighs 27 pounds. Including body armor, the average total weight carried by Marines is 117 pounds, while soldiers are saddled with 119 pounds, according to the report.The Army and Marines have looked into several ways to redistribute the weight currently carried by soldiers and Marines, including new ways to transport their gear on and around the battlefield. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Paul Gilham / Getty ImagesOscar Pistorius competed in both the Paralympics and Olympics in 2012.</div></div></div>On August 21, the streets of Rio de Janeiro will begin to empty as the Olympic Games draw to a close.But it's not until September 7 that the world's best disabled athletes - many of whom have overcome medical difficulties and <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/wheelchair-racer-samantha-kinghorns-route-to-rio-2016-8" target="_blank">shocking family tragedies</a> to represent their country - will gather in the same Brazilian stadiums to compete in the Paralympics. Once there, the competitors will receive far less exposure and recognition than their able-bodied counterparts.Many qualifying Paralympic athletes may even miss the 11-day event, as organisers have failed to hand over promised travel grants to competitors from over 50 countries, <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-08-15/rio-2016-budget-fiasco-threatens-paralympic-athletes-ambitions" target="_blank">according to Bloomberg</a>. $8 million (£6 million) of the money reserved for the Paralympics has reportedly been used to pay for last-minute construction crises at the Olympic village and the diving pool, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/aug/14/paralympic-committee-to-hold-budget-crisis-talks-with-brazil" target="_blank">The Guardian reports</a>.Some leading Paralympians, including six-time gold medalist David Weir, have <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/disability-sport/33673311" target="_blank">previously suggested combining disabled and non-disabled events</a> in athletics competitions to increase the exposure of disabled athletes.The President of the International Paralympic Committee, Sir Philip Craven, has also entertained the idea of merging the events. "It's really a logistical problem at the moment but I'm not dead against the idea, in principle, of [the Olympics and the Paralympics] coming together at some time,'" <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18174501" target="_blank">he told the BBC in 2012</a>. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Ryan RaghooRyan Raghoo, a British record holding long jumper who suffers from Cerebral Palsy.</div></div></div>Is it time to end the segregation of disabled athletes from their Olympic peers?Ryan Raghoo, the British long jump record holder for his T36 disability category, told Business Insider that combining the two events could be an opportunity to give disabled athletes the same status, media exposure, and sponsorship opportunities as Olympic athletes."I've got Paralympian friends who are world record holders and gold medalists across events and they're not household names," Raghoo said. "The same value is not given to the same achievement."So why are the two events separate?"It's two different things: the International Olympic Committee [IOC] represents able-bodied athletes, while the International Paralympic Committee [IPC] represents Paralympic athletes," Craig Spence, director of communications at the IPC, told Business Insider. "That's the simple fact."Spence pointed out that the modern Olympic movement was founded in 1894, while the first Paralympics did not take place until the summer of 1960. <a href="https://www.paralympic.org/the-ipc/history-of-the-movement" target="_blank">Disability sport was widely introduced after World War II</a>, as a means to encourage exercise among those injured in the conflict."We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the IOC, which is basically to extend our co-operation to 2032, so nothing will change between now and then," he said. This <a href="https://www.olympic.org/news/ioc-and-ipc-sign-long-term-agreement-supporting-the-paralympic-movement" target="_blank">agreement</a> between the Olympics and Paralympics allows the events to run concurrently, and promises that the two bodies work together to promote the "Paralympic brand." According to the document, they do this by "deepening existing cooperation," and guaranteeing the "financial stability and long-term viability of the IPC." It makes no mention of a possible merger.However, the Olympics and the Paralympics aren't only separate because of tradition. There are also more practical reasons, according to Spence."If we combine the two, then we would have 15,000 athletes," he said. "We would need a far bigger athlete village. Logistically, the event would take probably five weeks to complete and it just doesn't logistically make sense to bring the two together."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Ryan RaghooDoctors said that Raghoo would never walk after a complicated birth.</div></div></div>Despite comfortably making the qualification distance for the Rio Paralympics, Raghoo was not selected by Team GB because the number of places for disabled athletics competitors at Rio was limited to 55. In comparison, 80 athletes were selected for the British athletic team in the Olympics."It was very disappointing for me," Raghoo said. "It would have been a special moment for me, but also for the sport because Britain has never qualified for the event before."One reason Raghoo was not selected is because of large funding disparities between the Olympics and Paralympics. During the period between 2012 and 2016, <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> Sport increased its investment in Paralympic athletes by 43%, <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/disability-sport/20774792" target="_blank">according to the BBC</a>. However, this brought the total figure to just £70.2 million, which is considerably less than the £276.8 million that was spent on Olympic athletes in the same period."We send nine guys to the four-by-100 metres team in the Olympics," Raghoo said. "Only six of the guys can run, so three of those guys can't race." The three extra relay athletes he refers to go to Rio in case one of the other sprinters is injured."Everyone selected has worked damn hard and deserves to be there," he said, but "if those three slots were given to the Paralympic squad, you could have won three gold medals."But Raghoo is unsure whether the Olympics and the Paralympics should be merged at this stage. "I don't honestly know is the answer," he said. "What I'm saying is the Paralympics needs to be brought up to the same level as the Olympics."One argument against merging the two events, <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18174501" target="_blank">put forward by former British wheelchair racer Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson,</a> is that much of the Paralympics would "disappear off the face of the earth" because only very few disability events would be incorporated.British Paralympian Hannah Cockroft has also expressed that she is against combining the two events. "I don't want the Olympics and Paralympics to merge because I am proud of what we have made of that name," <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/disability-sport/33673311" target="_blank">she told the BBC</a>. The athlete said she worries that losing the separate Paralympics brand would leave disabled athletes overshadowed by other Olympic stars.Paralympians do not necessarily need to be boosted by merging the Paralympics with the Olympics. Meanwhile, <a href="https://twitter.com/C4Press/status/241098164738879490" target="_blank">Channel 4 gained 11.2 million viewers during its broadcast of the Paralympic opening ceremony </a>- the channel's biggest audience in a decade.Despite the success of the last Paralympics, mainstream media interest in disability sport has waned since 2012. The Diamond League - a 14-leg series of athletics events - gets regular coverage on networks like the BBC, but disability sport outside of the Paralympics is hardly covered.During the IPC Athletics European Championships, there were "people becoming European champions and their family back home could not even watch them on television," Raghoo said.British wheelchair racer David Weir has been outspoken about the need to give disabled sport more exposure."I am a big believer we need to be in the public's faces all the time," <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/disability-sport/33673311" target="_blank">the British athlete told the BBC in 2015</a>.
