Forex traders said rupee is likely to trade with a negative bias on risk aversion in global markets. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened at 83.10 against the US dollar and moved in a range of 83.05 to 83.13 in the day trade. The rupee finally settled at 83.12 (provisional) against the US dollar, down 2 paise from its previous close. On Friday, the rupee edged lower by 1 paisa to settle at an all-time low of 83.10 against the US dollar, weighed down by a negative trend in domestic equities, and foreign fund outflows. The Indian rupee depreciated on a surge in crude oil prices and selling pressure by foreign investors. However, the weak tone in US dollar and positive domestic markets cushioned the downside, said Anuj Choudhary - Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas. The US dollar declined after the Chinese central bank reduced a key rate by 10 basis points to 3.45 per cent to stimulate the economy leading to risk on sentiments. "We expect the rupee to trade with a negative bias on rising global crude oil prices and overall strength in the US dollar amid the hawkish US Federal Reserve. However, positive domestic markets and any intervention by the Reserve Bank of India may support rupee at lower levels. USDINR spot price is expected to trade in a range of Rs 82.80 to Rs 83.50," Choudhary added. Most investors will be taking cues from the BRICS summit and the Jackson Hole Symposium, traders said. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.14 per cent to 103.23. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, advanced 0.64 per cent to USD 85.34 per barrel. On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share BSE Sensex closed 267.43 points or 0.41 per cent higher at 65,216.09. The broader NSE Nifty advanced 83.45 points or 0.43 per cent to 19,393.60. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital markets on Friday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 266.98 crore, according to exchange data. Meanwhile, India's foreign exchange reserves jumped USD 708 million to USD 602.161 billion for the week ended August 11, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said on Friday. This is the first increase in the kitty after declining for three consecutive weeks. In the previous week, the overall reserves had declined USD 2.417 billion to USD 601.453 billion.

Rupee falls 2 paise to close at all-time low of 83.12 against US dollar

At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 81.63 against the dollar, then gained ground to touch 81.55, registering a rise of 17 paise over its previous close. On Tuesday, the rupee declined 4 paise to close at 81.72 against the US dollar. Forex traders said investors will focus on the US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's speech and the release of key domestic macro economic data for further cues. "Market is looking forward to Fed Chair Powell's speech today. He is likely to signal a slowdown in the pace of rate hikes but push back against expectations of a pivot," IFA Global Research Academy said in a note. Domestic Q2 FY'23 GDP print, April-October fiscal deficit and October core sector data are scheduled to be released later in the day. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.15 per cent to 106.65. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, advanced 1.14 per cent to USD 83.98 per barrel. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 111.56 points or 0.18 per cent higher at 62,793.40 points. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty rose 36.30 points or 0.19 per cent to 18,654.35 points. Rupee gains 17 paise to 81.55 against US dollar

The <keyword id="6355302" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rupee" source="Orion">rupee</keyword> depreciated by 10 paise to 82.75 against the US dollar in early trade on Thursday amid negative trends in the domestic as well as global equity markets and continued outflow of foreign funds. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened weaker at 82.77 against the US dollar and traded in the range of 82.80 and 82.71. Later, the domestic unit was trading at 82.75 against the greenback, registering a fall of 10 paise. On Wednesday, the rupee settled at 82.65 against the US dollar. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was 0.10 per cent lower at 104.54. Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures rose 0.61 per cent to USD 74.14 per barrel. The 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 116.67 points or 0.20 per cent lower at 57,439.23 points while the broader NSE Nifty was down 34 points or 0.2 per cent at 16,938.15 points. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital markets on Wednesday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 1,271.25 crore, according to exchange data. Analysts said the failure of two banks in the US and crisis at Swiss banking major Credit Suisse have adversely impacted market sentiments. On the domestic front, India's exports contracted in February for the third consecutive month, falling 8.8 per cent to USD 33.88 billion against USD 37.15 billion in the same month last year. Rupee falls 10 paise to 82.75 against US dollar in early trade

On Wednesday, the rupee settled at 82.49 against the US dollar. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 11 per cent to 104.59. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, advanced 0.04 per cent to USD 83.34 per barrel. Weighed down by a strong dollar, Rupee falls 11 paise to 82.60/USD

The rupee has strengthened in offshore trading on broad-based dollar weakness. It is likely to trade in a range of 81.55-81.85 with sideways price action, IFA Global Research Academy said in a research note. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.41 per cent to 105.63, post the weak US data and dovish Fed minutes. "Minutes of the latest Fed meeting indicated that most Fed members were in support of slowing the pace of rate hikes but 'various' Fed members saw rates peaking at higher levels," IFA Global Research Academy said. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, declined 0.21 per cent to <keyword id="54123" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="usd" source="Orion">USD</keyword> 85.23 per barrel. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 180.14 points or 0.29 per cent higher at 61,690.72. Rupee gains 26 paise to 81.67 against US dollar

Besides, surging crude prices in the international market impacted the domestic unit, traders said. At the interbank foreign exchange, the local currency opened weak at 81.65 against the dollar, then lost further ground to quote at 81.78, registering a loss of 38 paise over its previous close. The rupee settled 33 paise higher at 81.40 against the dollar on Friday. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, slipped 0.04 per cent to 112.08. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, surged 2.77 per cent to USD 87.50 per barrel. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 66.60 points or 0.12 per cent lower at 57,360.32, and the broader NSE Nifty fell 12.90 points or 0.08 per cent to 17,081.45. After infusing funds in the last two months, foreign investors turned sellers again in September, and pulled out Rs 7,600 crore from the Indian equity markets amid a hawkish stance by the US Fed and sharp depreciation in the rupee.

Rupee falls 38 paise to 81.78 against US dollar

The <keyword id="6355302" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rupee" source="Orion">rupee</keyword> opened on a flat note against the US dollar on Thursday as softening crude oil prices in the global markets supported the local currency. Traders said the domestic unit is trading in a narrow range as muted domestic equities and sustained foreign fund outflows capped the appreciation bias. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 82.77 against the dollar, then gained ground to quote at 82.76, registering a rise of 4 paise over its previous close. On Wednesday, the rupee gained 7 paise to close at 82.80 against the US dollar. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.10 per cent to 104.35. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, declined 0.31 per cent to <keyword id="54123" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="usd" source="Orion">USD</keyword> 83 per barrel. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 346.35 points or 0.57 per cent lower at 60,563.93. The broader NSE Nifty fell 103.10 points or 0.57 per cent to 18,019.40. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital markets on Wednesday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 872.59 crore, according to exchange data. "Rupee has been in the 82.40-82.91 range for 13 sessions now. It ended flat at 82.86 yesterday. There were dollar bids to fix on account of expiry yesterday but USD/INR eased post fix. USD/INR is likely to trade in a 82.65-82.95 range with sideways price action," IFA Global Research Academy said in a research note. The report further noted that risk sentiment has been dampened on fears that China reopening could result in a rise in cases around the world. The US will require travellers from China to furnish a negative COVID report.

Rupee trades flat against US dollar

Forex traders said the rupee opened stronger tracking gains in the non-deliverable forward (NDF) markets. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 81.24 against the dollar, then gained further ground and touched 81.15, registering a rise of 21 paise over its previous close. On Thursday, it settled at 81.36 against the dollar. Meanwhile, the <keyword id="75201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dollar-index" source="Orion">dollar index</keyword>, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.09 per cent to 102.15. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, advanced 0.65 per cent to USD 86.72 per barrel. According to Sriram Iyer, Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities, the rupee opened stronger on Friday tracking gains in the NDF markets. The NDF settled at 81.1650 on Thursday."However, stronger crude oil prices, risk-off sentiments amid mounting global growth concerns and weak start for the Asian and emerging market peers this Friday could keep gains in check," Iyer said. The currency could eke small gains for the week supported by dollar inflows and weaker dollar index, Iyer said. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 94.17 points or 0.15 per cent lower at 60,764.26. On Friday, it depreciated by 8 paise to close at 81.38 against the US dollar. Meanwhile, the <keyword id="75201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dollar-index" source="Orion">dollar index</keyword>, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.32 per cent to 101.87. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, fell 0.53 per cent to USD 84.83 per barrel. According to Sriram Iyer, Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities, the Indian rupee opened stronger on Monday, tracking a weak dollar and a possibility of smaller rate hike from the US Fed in February. Rupee gains 9 paise to 81.29 against US dollar

Forex traders said weak domestic markets, surge in crude oil prices and foreign fund outflows weighed on the rupee. However, a decline in the US Dollar index prevented the local unit from declining sharply. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened at 83.94 and touched an intraday low of 83.97 and a high of 83.93 against the dollar during the session. It finally settled at 83.96 (provisional) against the American currency, down 1 paisa from its previous close. On Wednesday, the rupee consolidated in a narrow range and settled for the day lower by 3 paise at 83.95 against US dollar. The local unit had slumped 37 paise to settle at an all-time low of 84.09 against the US dollar on Monday. "We expect the rupee to trade with a negative bias on selling pressure from foreign investors and weak domestic markets. Ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East may also pressurise the rupee," said Anuj Choudhary - Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas. However, weak US dollar may support the rupee at lower levels. Any intervention by <keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI" source="keywords">RBI</keyword> may also support the rupee. "Traders may take cues from weekly unemployment claims data from the US. USDINR spot price is expected to trade in a range of Rs 83.75 to Rs 84.20," Choudhary said. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.12 per cent to 103.07 points. <keyword id="20025497" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brent-crude" source="keywords">Brent crude</keyword>, the global oil benchmark, was trading 0.78 per cent lower at USD 77.72 per barrel in futures trade. On the macroeconomic front, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank kept the benchmark repurchase or repo rate unchanged at 6.50 per cent. Announcing the bi-monthly monetary policy review RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said Indian rupee remained largely range-bound so far this financial year. The panel also decided to retain a policy stance at "withdrawal of accommodation" to aid MPC's focus on bringing inflation towards its 4 per cent target. The status quo by RBI comes amid varied central bank action in advanced economies. While the Bank of England reduced interest rates last week, the Bank of Japan hiked rates to their highest levels since 2008. Also, fears of a US recession have risen on the back of weak employment numbers, piling up pressure on the Federal Reserve to start cutting rates to support the economy. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex fell 581.79 points, or 0.73 per cent, to close at 78,886.22 points, while the Nifty declined 180.50 points, or 0.74 per cent, to 24,117.00 points. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital markets on Wednesday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 3,314.76 crore, according to exchange data. Moreover, a negative trend in domestic equities and firm American currency sapped investor appetite, forex traders said. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 82.68 against the greenback, then slipped further to 82.69, registering a fall of 39 paise over its previous close. On Friday, the rupee depreciated further by 13 paise to hit a new lifetime closing low of 82.30 against the US dollar. "The double whammy of higher US rates and higher crude prices is back to haunt the rupee. While the <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword> was able to defend the rupee successfully through the last round of simultaneous stress on current and capital accounts by spending its reserves, this time around things are likely to be different," IFA Global Research Academy said in a note. India's forex reserves dropped by USD 4.854 billion to USD 532.664 billion as on September 30, the <keyword id="50847" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="reserve-bank" source="Orion">Reserve Bank</keyword> said on Friday. The reserves, which have been dipping as the central bank deploys the kitty to defend the rupee amid pressures caused majorly by global developments, had declined by over USD 8.134 billion to USD 537.518 billion in the previous reporting week. "After having exhausted a significant portion of its reserves, RBI seems concerned about the burn rate of reserves and appears to be spending them very judiciously. This has resulted in the rupee adjusting and aligning itself with fundamentals and its peer group currencies," IFA Global Research Academy's note said. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.02 per cent up at 112.81. Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures fell 0.87 per cent to USD 97.07 per barrel. On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 646.25 points or 1.11 per cent lower at 57,545.04, while the broader NSE Nifty fell 192.10 points or 1.11 per cent to 17,122.55. Foreign institutional investors were net sellers in the capital market on Friday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 2,250.77 crore, as per exchange data. Rupee falls 39 paise to a fresh lifetime low of 82.69 against the USD

Mumbai, The <keyword id="6355302" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="rupee" source="Orion">rupee</keyword> edged lower by 1 paisa to settle at an all-time low of 83.10 (provisional) against the US dollar on Friday, weighed down by a negative trend in domestic equities and foreign fund outflows. Forex traders said the rupee is likely to trade with a negative bias on risk aversion in global markets and a rising US dollar. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 83.03 against the dollar and moved in a range of 83.02 to 83.13 in the day trade. It finally ended the day at 83.10 (provisional), registering a fall of 1 paisa from its previous close. On Thursday, the rupee settled lower by 1 paisa at a record low of 83.09 against the US dollar. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.11 per cent to 103.46. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, declined 0.32 per cent to USD 83.85 per barrel. The rupee declined marginally on weak domestic markets and foreign fund outflows, said Anuj Choudhary - Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas. However, the softness of the US dollar cushioned the downside. The US dollar eased as the Chinese central bank intervened after the Yuan fell to a 16-year low. The US dollar gained on Thursday as US weekly unemployment claims declined to 239,000 as compared to 250,000 in the previous week showing a tight labour market. "We expect the rupee to trade with a negative bias on risk aversion in global markets and overall strength in the greenback. Recovery in crude oil prices may also weigh on Rupee. However, any intervention by the <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> may support Rupee at lower levels. <keyword id="238223" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="usdinr" source="Orion">USDINR</keyword> spot price is expected to trade in a range of Rs 82.80 to Rs 83.50," Choudhary added. On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share BSE Sensex closed 202.36 points or 0.31 per cent lower at 64,948.66 points. The broader NSE Nifty declined 55.10 points or 0.28 per cent to close at 19,310.15 points. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital markets on Thursday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 1,510.86 crore, according to exchange data.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the local unit opened at 83.08, then touched an intra-day high of 83.05 but soon pared the gains and settled for the day lower by 4 paise at 83.14 (provisional) against the American currency. On Friday, the rupee rallied for the fourth consecutive trading session and settled with a sharp gain of 19 paise at 83.10 against the US dollar. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading at 104.67, lower by 0.05 per cent. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, advanced 0.47 per cent to USD 82.51 per barrel. "We expect the rupee to trade with a positive bias on positive domestic equities and expectations of fresh foreign inflows. However, a strong US dollar and a recovery in crude oil prices may cap sharp upside," Anuj Choudhary - Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas said. US markets will remain closed on Monday on Memorial Day holiday. Investors may remain cautious ahead of core PCE price index data later this week. USD-INR spot price is expected to trade in a range of Rs 82.80 to Rs 83.30, Choudhary added. On the domestic macroeconomic front, India's forex reserves jumped USD 4.549 billion to a new all-time high of USD 648.7 billion for the week ended May 17, the Reserve Bank said on Friday. This is the third consecutive week of increase in the overall kitty, which had increased by USD 2.561 billion to USD 644.151 billion in the previous reporting week ended May 17. On the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex declined 19.89 points, or 0.03 per cent, to close at 75,390.50 points. The broader NSE Nifty settled 24.65 points or 0.11 per cent lower at 22,932.45 points. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital markets on Friday, as they offloaded shares worth Rs 944.83 crore, according to exchange data.
