The Indian rupee opened on a cautious note and fell 11 paise to 71.33 against the US dollar in early trade on Thursday amid sustained rise in crude oil prices and foreign fund outflows.
 Forex traders said the rupee is trading in a narrow range amid lack of directional cues from the global market.
 At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 71.27 then fell to 71.33 against the dollar, showing a decline of 11 paise over its previous closing.
 The Indian rupee on Wednesday had closed at 71.22 against the dollar.
 Traders said rise in crude oil prices weighed on the domestic unit, while sustained positive opening in domestic equities supported the rupee and restricted the fall.
 Meanwhile, brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, rose by 0.30 per cent to USD 66.20 per barrel.
 Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net sellers in the capital markets, as they sold shares worth Rs 58.87 crore on Wednesday, as per provisional data.
 Domestic bourses opened on a positive note on Thursday with benchmark indices Sensex trading 90.10 points up at 41,396.12 and Nifty higher by 34 points at 12,216.50.
 The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.11 to 96.54.

Rupee trades flat against US dollar

Weighed down by a strong dollar, Rupee falls 11 paise to 82.60/USD

Rupee falls 10 paise to 82.75 against US dollar in early trade

Recovering from its record low, the <keyword id="6355302" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rupee" source="Orion">rupee</keyword> appreciated 13 paise to 78.90 against the <keyword id="6368584" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="us-dollar" source="Orion">US dollar</keyword> on Thursday. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 78.92 against the American dollar. In initial trade, the local currency witnessed a high of 78.90 and a low of 78.94 against the US dollar. In the previous session, the rupee had closed at its all-time low of 79.03 against the US dollar. According to Sriram Iyer, Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities, the range for the rupee today is 78.65-79.05. "Asian currencies have started mixed, but currencies could remain under pressure after Fed Chair Jerome Powell said there is a risk the US central bank's interest rate hikes will slow the economy considerably," Iyer said. On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share Sensex was trading 337.14 points or 0.64 per cent higher at 53,364.11, while the broader NSE Nifty advanced 84.00 points or 0.53 per cent to 15,883.10. Rupee recovers from its record low, gains 13 paise to 78.90

Forex traders said the rupee is likely to trade with a negative bias on risk aversion in global markets and a rising US dollar. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 83.10, then touched a high of 83.05 against the American currency, registering a rise of 5 paise over its last close. On Friday, the rupee edged lower by 1 paisa to settle at an all-time low of 83.10 against the US dollar, weighed down by a negative trend in domestic equities, and foreign fund outflows. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital markets on Friday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 266.98 crore, according to exchange data. Meanwhile, India's foreign exchange reserves jumped USD 708 million to USD 602.161 billion for the week ended August 11, the <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) said on Friday. This is the first increase in the kitty after declining for three consecutive weeks. In the previous week, the overall reserves had declined USD 2.417 billion to USD 601.453 billion.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened weak at 82.44 against the dollar, then fell to 82.46, registering a decline of 25 paise over its last close. On Friday, the rupee settled at 82.21 against the dollar. The <keyword id="75201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dollar-index" source="Orion">dollar index</keyword>, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.48 per cent to 102.99. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, advanced 5.50 per cent to USD 84.28 per barrel. "... Appreciation in rupee shall remain limited to 81.50-81.80 zone where importer can target buying and upside shall for now remain protected towards 82.70-82.90 region for this week," CR Forex Advisors MD-Amit Pabari said. "With a holiday shortened week, highlights would be the RBI policy due on April 6 and US payrolls due on April 7," Pabari added. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank will be meeting for three days on April 3, 5 and 6 to take into account various domestic and global factors before coming out with the first bi-monthly monetary policy for fiscal 2023-24. The RBI has already increased the repo rate by a total of 250 basis points since May in a bid to contain inflation though it has continued to remain above the central bank's comfort zone of 6 per cent for most of the time. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 64.56 points or 0.11 per cent lower at 58,926.96. The broader NSE Nifty declined 9.60 points or 0.06 per cent to 17,350.15. Weighed down by crude prices, Rupee falls 25 paise to 82.46/USD

At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened lower at 82.27 against the dollar and rose to 82.24 before slipping to 82.35. On Monday, the rupee settled at 82.23 against the US dollar. The <keyword id="75201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dollar-index" source="Orion">dollar index</keyword>, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies rose 0.26 per cent to 103.86. Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures fell 1.08 per cent to USD 79.90 per barrel. On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 36.50 points or 0.06 per cent higher at 58,274.35 points while the broader NSE Nifty was up 38.85 points or 0.23 per cent to 17,193.15 points. Rupee falls 12 paise to 82.35 against US dollar in early trade

The <keyword id="6355302" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rupee" source="Orion">rupee</keyword> gained 18 paise to 81.93 against the US dollar in early trade on Thursday tracking the broad weakness of the American currency in the overseas market. Forex traders said foreign fund inflows also supported the local unit. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 81.99 against the dollar, then climbed to 81.93, registering a rise of 18 paise over its previous close. On Wednesday, the rupee closed at 82.11 against the US currency. "Overall USDINR has strong support around 81.75-80 levels, as the RBI is intervening to protect from steep appreciation. Adding to it, the ongoing geopolitical concerns and Fed's hiking process are likely to weigh on investor sentiment and the USDINR could bounce back to 82.50-82.80 levels," CR Forex Advisors MD-Amit Pabari said. Meanwhile, the <keyword id="75201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dollar-index" source="Orion">dollar index</keyword>, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.06 per cent to 101.55. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, declined 0.22 per cent to USD 87.14 per barrel. "Brent has risen to USD 87.25 per barrel as weak US CPI could mean that the Fed could sound less hawkish," IFA Global Research Academy said in a research note. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex declined 43.95 points or 0.07 per cent to 60,348.82. The broader NSE Nifty declined 1.05 points or 0.01 per cent to 17,811.35. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital market on Wednesday as they purchased shares worth Rs 1,907.95 crore, according to exchange data. On the domestic macroeconomic front, retail inflation in March fell to a 15-month low of 5.66 per cent and came back to the Reserve Bank's comfort level of 6 per cent. India's industrial production growth rose marginally to 5.6 per cent in February from 5.5 per cent in January 2023, mainly due to good performance of the power, mining and manufacturing sectors, according to official data released on Wednesday.
