In a major push to induct indigenously developed weapon systems, the <keyword id="15141" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="indian-air-force" source="Orion">Indian Air Force</keyword> has moved a proposal worth over Rs 1,400 crore to the government for acquiring <keyword id="7766600" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rudram" source="Orion">Rudram</keyword> next-generation anti-radiation missiles (NGARM) to search and destroy enemy radar locations, informed defence officials. "A proposal for acquisition of advanced missiles developed by the <keyword id="152819" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="defence-research-and-development-organisation" source="Orion">Defence Research and Development Organisation</keyword> is with the <keyword id="43909" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="defence-ministry" source="Orion">Defence Ministry</keyword> and a high-level meeting would soon be taking a call on it," defence officials told <keyword id="21936" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ani" source="Orion">ANI</keyword>. The next-generation anti-radiation missiles have already been tested by the Indian Air Force from its Sukhoi-30 fighter aircraft fleet and can destroy enemy radar locations during conflicts, they said. The destruction of radar systems can help the Indian Air Force to strike targets without detection, the officials said. The NGARM can be fired from IAF fighters like the Sukhoi-30 and the Mirage-2000. It is accurate and has been developed with the capability to even track a radar system even if it is not operating. NGARM is India's first indigenously developed anti-radiation missile that has a speed of <keyword id="1548525" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mach" source="Orion">Mach</keyword> two or twice the speed of sound. The tactical, air-to-surface anti-radiation missile is equipped with a passive homing head that tracks sources of radiation of a wide range of frequencies. It can lock into a target not only before launch but also after it has been launched. The NGARM induction would be a big boost for the Indian Air Force as it would help the force prepare for future wars with indigenous weapon systems. India on Friday successfully flight tested the indigenously-developed <keyword id="7261203" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anti-radiation-missile">anti-radiation Missile</keyword> (Rudram), which can hit any radio frequency emitting target. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the Defence Research and Development Organisation and other stakeholders for the successful test of the first indigenous anti-radiation missile for the <keyword id="15141" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Air-Force">Indian Air Force</keyword>. "New generation Anti-Radiation Missile (Rudram) was successfully flight tested onto a radiation target located on Wheeler Island off the coast of Odisha," the <keyword id="6355142" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="DRDO">DRDO</keyword> said in a statement. The missile was launched from a Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft. The missile is integrated on the Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft as the launch platform, having capability of varying ranges based on launch conditions. "It has INS-GPS navigation with Passive Homing Head for the final attack. It hit the radiation target with pin-point accuracy," the DRDO said. The Passive Homing Head can detect, classify and engage targets over a wide band of frequencies as programmed. The missile is a potent weapon for the IAF for suppression of enemy air defence effectively from large stand-off ranges. With this, the country has established indigenous capability to develop long-range, air-launched anti-radiation missiles for neutralising enemy radars, communication sites and other radio frequency emitting targets. Earlier this month, the DRDO tested the anti-submarine weapon system, in a boost to naval warfare capabilities. In a significant boost for the capabilities of its Su-30 combat aircraft fleet, the <keyword id="15141" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="indian-air-force" source="Orion">Indian Air Force</keyword> is equipping them with a new missile which can take down ground-based targets from a distance of over 250 kilometres. The new missile has been acquired by the Indian <keyword id="6354954" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="air-force" source="Orion">Air Force</keyword> under emergency provisions and will further enhance the capabilities of the Su-30 fighter jets which are now the mainstay of the force for at least the next 20 years. "The new high-speed low drag missile can hit targets at over 250 kilometres and is going to boost the capability of the aircraft," defence sources told ANI. The capability would allow the Indian Air Force to strike down enemy military camps and terrorist infrastructure as it did during the Balakot operations in 2019 from well within its own territory. "The new missile would be important for the Su-30 fleet of the <keyword id="6355075" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="iaf" source="Orion">IAF</keyword> as integrating long-range missiles from European or American origin would not be easy in view of the global situation," the sources said. The IAF is also upgrading the Su-30s in an upgrade programme expected to cost over Rs30,000 and would begin with 85 planes. The IAF currently has around 260 of these heavy air superiority fighter jets which are now flying in sync with the most modern Rafale fighter planes of the force. The IAF has strengthened the capabilities of the Su-30s in a big way with the addition of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles which can hit targets at over 500 kilometres. The air-to-air missiles have also seen an upgrade while the made-in-India Astra - all weather beyond-visual-range air-to-air, and Rudram anti-radiation next-generation missiles have been added to the fleet. The BrahMos capability can help the Air Force to tackle any long-range tracking radar like that of the S-400 air defence systems.
