Diwali delights: 'Pippa', 'Ghoomer', 'Valatty' to sparkle on OTT

New Delhi, "<keyword id="486655" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gangs-of-wasseypur" source="Orion">Gangs of Wasseypur</keyword>" may be credited for making the catchphrase "Tum Se Na Ho Payega" popular, but writer-director <keyword id="368516" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nitesh-tiwari" source="Orion">Nitesh Tiwari</keyword>, whose new film draws its title from the line, believes it was already a part of the audience's conscience. Spoken by Tigmanshu Dhulia's character <keyword id="2183828" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ramadhir-singh" source="Orion">Ramadhir Singh</keyword> in Anurag Kashyap's 2012 cult classic, the phrase has come to reflect loss of faith in someone's ability and competence. <br /><br />Written by Tiwari and directed by Abhishek Sinha, "Tum Se Na Ho Payega" is a "light-hearted take on the modern-day challenges faced by today's youth, and their dilemma in standing up to these rules laid by the society". <br /><br />Asked if the title of his film is a hat-tip to "Gangs of Wasseypur", Tiwari said that wasn't the case. <br /><br />"'Tum Se Na Ho Payega' has become a popular phrase because of 'Gangs of Wasseypur'. But I like to believe that 'Tum Se Na Ho Payega' existed in our conscience before 'Wasseypur'. 'Wasseypur' also used something that already existed. This (the title of our film) probably exists in the lingo of the youth and what better than something that, (which) not only encapsulates the flavour of the film and feel of the youth," the writer-director told PTI in a virtual interview. <br /><br />"Tum Se Na Ho Payega" was previously named on its source material: <keyword id="183303" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="varun-agarwal" source="Orion">Varun Agarwal</keyword>'s novel "How I Braved Anu Aunty and Co-Founded a Million Dollar Company", he added. <br /><br />Tiwari, best known for directing "Chillar Party", "Dangal" and "Chhichhore", said they decided to change the title as they had "fundamentally deviated" from certain aspects of the 2012 book. <br /><br />"There were many more elements in the film than just 'the aunty bit'. We went back to this and asked if this was the best way to summarise the film as 'Bas Karo Aunty'. The answer came back 'no'. <br /><br />"The best way to explain the film was through the philosophy of the film -- the voices of the film which constantly keep telling us that the moment you try to do something different. At the same time, the flavour of the film is fun and about banter between friends. It has a lot to do with the life of youngsters," he added. <br /><br />The director, an engineering graduate from IIT-B by educational qualification, describes himself as someone who doesn't have many dreams and takes life as it comes. Before foraying in films, Tiwari was in the field of advertising, where he also crossed paths with his wife and filmmaker Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari. <br /><br />"I take life as it comes. I don't plan too much. That's why you see my movies come once every three years. Never following a set pattern but everybody says I should," said Tiwari, whose latest film as a director was 2023's "Bawaal". <br /><br />He, however, has a dream for EarthSky Pictures, a production house he co-founded with his wife. Tiwari said they aim to tell diverse stories and nurture younger talent through their banner. <br /><br />"We were fortunate that somebody believed in us and gave us a break. This is our way of paying back. If at all, you can call it a dream, which is not so much at a personal level, but what kind of stuff I'll be doing going forward. That will happen as it has to happen. Despite the legal trend moving the US closer to full acceptant of pot, evidence shows marijuana smoking and vaping makes the lungs more vulnerable to infection and makes smokers and vapers <a href="https://www.insider.com/regular-cannabis-smoking-may-increase-covid-19-risk-lung-experts-2020-4">more susceptible to COVID-19,</a> a possible deterrent to lighting up this 4/20.</p><p>Despite the medical risks, legal marijuana sales <a href="https://www.insider.com/regular-cannabis-smoking-may-increase-covid-19-risk-lung-experts-2020-4">are booming</a> during quarantine, and <a href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/scaachikoul/weed-dealers-weed-smokers-coronavirus">BuzzFeed News reports</a> that cannabis enthusiasts in non-legal states are treating their dealers like essential workers, if they can. </p><p>"True stoners who have been consuming this plant for a long time are probably consuming it more than normal given that we're all home," Kate Miller, co-founder of Miss Grass, told Insider. "But I also think there's an opportunity for new consumers. In California and other states where there's a regulated cannabis program, it's considered an essential business during this pandemic. It's easier for me to get weed right now than it is to get toilet paper."</p><p>Miss Grass is <a href="https://www.missgrass.com/">an online cannabis magazine</a> and e-commerce platform started in January 2018. Once Americans started being encouraged to self-quarantine, its leaders gathered – virtually, of course – to come up with a 4/20 plan.</p><p>The result is the "Get Good At Weed" summit, a day of free programming on Zoom starting at noon PST that includes a workshop with comedian Chelsea Handler, a panel discussion about how cannabis derivatives can be used for sex and sexual <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="health">health</keyword>, and a cannabis-infused butter tutorial presented by "Bong Appétit" co-host Vanessa Lavorato. </p><h2>'4/20' is a holiday intended for all cannabis users, but the rapidly growing movement could have a diversity problem  </h2><p>There's also a recommendation that summit attendees donate to the <a href="https://www.lastprisonerproject.org/">Last Prisoner Project</a>, a restorative justice advocacy group seeking clemency for the nearly 40,000 US citizens incarcerated for marijuana-related offenses. The group, founded by Steve DeAngelo – who <a href="https://www.canna-tech.co/speakers/steve-deangelo">was dubbed</a> "the father of the legal cannabis industry" – also seeks to acclimate newly freed individuals by helping them get jobs in the legal cannabis industry if they wish. </p><p>The advocacy group has recently begun fundraising for a COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund for additional support for what it believes are wrongfully incarcerated individuals, who face <a href="https://www.themarshallproject.org/2020/03/19/this-chart-shows-why-the-prison-population-is-so-vulnerable-to-covid-19">a greater risk</a> in prison due to the coronavirus.</p><p>While Miss Grass seeks to educative modern cannabis consumers about restorative justice, its also an organization founded by white women, and many of the marijuana enthusiasts-turned-influencers and celebrities who are proudly, publicly celebrating 4/20 are white women, too. The problem is representative of a <a href="https://www.adweek.com/brand-marketing/influencer-marketing-has-an-implicit-bias-problem/">lack of diversity</a> seen in US influencer spaces across the mainstream internet. </p><p>When asked about the disparity, Miller noted that there was gender and race gap in the <a href="https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/yw4pkw/weed-industry-equity-black-business">legal marijuana industry</a>, which began in the US in 2012, when Colorado and Washington became <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-marijuana-legalization/colorado-washington-first-states-to-legalize-recreational-pot-idUSBRE8A602D20121107">the first two states</a> to legalize the recreational use of cannabis. California passed its ballot measure to legalize recreational cannabis in 2016. </p><p>"I feel like when I first entered this industry, every headline I read was like, 'This will be the first multi-million dollar industry that women are going to lead,' which is obviously a very exciting proposition," Miller told Insider. "But I think if you look at that today, it's declining month over month. It's a direct effect of being influenced by a market represented by predominantly white men in this capitalist system."</p><p>In terms of front-facing racial diversity, when stoner influencers and the cannabis industry reflect the historically marginalized groups <a href="http://www.drugpolicy.org/issues/race-and-drug-war">who have been affected most</a> by the plant's criminal status, Miller is optimistic. </p><p>"As it relates to race, it's not even what the industry looks like today, it's what the legal industry has looked like from day one," she said. "The war on drugs back in 1971 when it started, it was the biggest failure, it ruined so many lives, and it disproportionately impacted the lives of black and brown bodies. Those effects are very visible today."</p><p>"I do feel like there's a shift happening in the world right now in a good way toward diversity and inclusivity in all industries, which is especially important in cannabis given its history."</p><p>Koala Puffs told Insider her fanbase is largely women like her, in her mid-twenties age range, who are "girls like me who wanted someone to smoke with and all found somebody so we don't feel so alone." She has male fans – and those younger and older than her, too – and is observing a lot of rapid growth among cannabis enthusiasts. </p><p>"Personally, I believe cannabis has come really, really far in even the last couple of years that I've been involved, I've seen it grow so much and I'm really trying to add onto that and break down the stigma and judgment behind it," she said. "Dispensaries are opening, billboards are going up showing people that it's okay, it's acceptable, just like a bar, just like a party. And more importantly, why?<br /><br />Believe it or not, the way we use like can be traced back as far as the late 19th century. Right here on the pages from the 1886 Scottish novel "Kidnapped" by Robert Louis Stevenson. But it wasn't until the 1950s that a certain group brought the word to spotlight: The Beat Generation.<br /><br />The young, rebellious Beat Generation soon picked up the interjection as a sign of cool, and it was used so frequently that it turned into a trope for any beatnik characters in pop culture.<br /><br /><strong>Spook</strong>: Like, how should I know, Jazz? Like, he never tells me nothing.<br /><br /><strong>Dobie</strong>: What's that on your chin?<br /><br /><strong>Maynard</strong>: Can't you tell, man? It's, like, a beard.<br /><br /><strong>Shaggy</strong>: Like, next time, signal!<br /><br /><strong>Scooby</strong>: Sorry!<br /><br /><strong>Narrator</strong>: The Beats played an important role in introducing the new use of like to a larger audience, especially the younger generations. And 20 years later, when the word rose to prominence once again, it wasn't from the rebellious Beat writers in bars, but from the young girls in the malls of San Fernando Valley. And they had a name for themselves.<br /><br /><strong>Reporter</strong>: They're high-school girls with a lingo, style of dress, and philosophy all their own. They are: Valley girl!<br /><br /><strong>Narrator</strong>: The Valley girl was a socioeconomic stereotype referring to the young, upper-class white girls living in the San Fernando Valley. These girls were known for spending days at the mall and dressing head to toe in pink, but what stood out the most was the way they spoke.<br /><br /><strong>Moon</strong> <strong>Zappa</strong>: And think of the muscles straining and the jaw being, like, pulled out. Make it seem as if it's rolling off your tongue. Let's try: Barf out, I am sure!<br /><br /><strong>Narrator</strong>: It even had its own name: Valley speak. It was what linguists call a sociolect, a set of dialect, slang, and words used by a specific class of people. It includes words and phrases like tubular, totally, grody, gag me with a spoon, some of which are still used today. And, of course, the word like. But it was still just a regional phenomenon, until a single record changed all of that.<br /><br />♪ Valley girl ♪ ♪ She's a Valley girl ♪<br /><br /><strong>Narrator</strong>: In 1982, musician Frank Zappa and his daughter Moon Zappa released their single "Valley Girl," a novelty song written to mock and satirize the Valley girl culture. To their surprise, the song was a massive hit, peaking at No. 32 on the Billboard chart, and was even nominated for a Grammy. The song that was meant to be a parody had ironically turned Valley girls and Valley speak into a national phenomenon.<br /><br /><strong>Frank</strong> <strong>Zappa</strong>: I've been doing this for almost 20 years, and this is the most successful record that has ever occurred, and the only reason that it's successful is because it's an accident.<br /><br /><strong>Narrator</strong>: The Valley girls had turned from a stereotype that symbolized Southern California's shallow materialism into a cool, idolized icon. And the Californian <keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="entertainment">entertainment</keyword> industry only fueled its spread, this time in movies and TV shows. A year after the song's release, films like "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" and "Valley Girl" were made to quickly take advantage of the trend, which then led to other movies and shows, like "Clueless," "Mean Girls," and "Beverly Hills, 90210," all targeting a younger demographic. Although pop culture has contributed to the word's widespread popularity, linguists have come to believe that it might also be because of how we use the word.<br /><br /><strong>Abby:</strong> Yeah, everyone says like. It's just the way people, like, talk.<br /><br /><strong>Narrator</strong>: The word originally began with just two definitions, the verb from the Old English "lician" meaning, to feel attracted towards, and the adjective from the Old English "lich," meaning similar to. But over time, it's not developed one, but four more definitions, each serving an entirely different purpose. Like the quotative, used to quote our own or someone else's words.<br /><br /><strong>Medha</strong>: She was just like, "Hey, do you have PayPal?" And I was like, "I don't have PayPal, I have Venmo."<br /><br /><strong>Narrator</strong>: A filler mainly used for pause and flow.<br /><br /><strong>Irene</strong>: It was really just amazing. Like, I kept thinking about it afterwards.<br /><br /><strong>Narrator</strong>: An adverb, also known as a hedge, that's used for approximation.<br /><br /><strong>David</strong>: This happened, like, five minutes ago.<br /><br /><strong>Narrator</strong>: And what's known as a discourse particle, to emphasize a point.<br /><br /><strong>Abby</strong>: She has this bananas phobia of blood. Like, it's... she's completely, like, debilitated.<br /><br /><strong>Narrator</strong>: And that's not all. Recent studies have suggested that the word might also have a social function, acting as a cue to seem informal and friendly, another reason why it's so prevalent among young girls. Over the years, the way we use like has been used as a prime example of how younger generations are destroying the English language. The internet is full of advice on how to stop saying the word, and schools have gone as far as to ban their students from saying it. But chances are, they won't work. If history has proven one thing, language evolves and spreads, no matter what we want. Warner Bros. is letting fans sign up to see the 'Batman V Superman' trailer in theaters Monday

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Back in April, we revealed that reality TV star <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/khloe-kardashian-messaging-app-regroupd-2015-4">Khloe Kardashian was working on a new messaging app</a> that was loaded with social polling features to help take the hassle out of making plans with your friends.<p>The app&#xa0;used to be called Regroupd, but that name has changed in the past few months to "Begroupd," and Business Insider got an exclusive first look at the app, which launches later today for iPhone.</p><p>"The main problem the app really solves is that it streamlines the decision-making process," Begroupd founder Lindsey Cummins told Business Insider. "Because right now, while group chat does solve one problem, it creates another, where making plans and decisions and just getting what you're after is nearly impossible. And that's what Begroupd does for you, it simplifies that."</p><p>Cummins and Kardashian are betting that enough people are annoyed with the current system&#xa0;of texting, calling, and circling back to confirm plans that they'll jump ship for Begroupd, with introduces a host of social polling features to streamline the planning process.</p><p>Cummins, who <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/khloe-kardashian-messaging-app-regroupd-2015-4">first thought up the idea for Begroupd shortly after graduating from Cornell</a>, still gets cagey when asked how she and Kardashian first met and connected, saying "she can't get into the specifics of that." But Kardashian says Cummins approached her with the idea for Begroupd, and since then Kardashian has&#xa0;teased and promoted the app on her Instagram.&#xa0;</p><p><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">"I've always wanted to get involved in the tech industry, but hadn't come across anything that really clicked for me," Kardashian told Business Insider in an emailed statement. "When Lindsey approached me with Begroupd I fell in love. Messaging is such an integral part of our lives and Begroupd will help solve problems everyone can relate to."</p><p>Begroupd looks a lot like a traditional messaging app like iMessage or WhatsApp, but there's an entire section of the app devoted to decision-making tools.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>In a few seconds, you can&#xa0;conduct a poll, ask a simple Yes/No question, seek a star rating on a photo, or send out RSVPs for events that will automatically sync with your calendar.&#xa0;The creator of the poll can also decide whether or not to make the responses public or private.</p><p>By offering these polling features within the app, Cummins and Kardashian&#xa0;want to allow people to send out feelers to their friends, receive feedback, and nail down plans all without leaving their app.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>"The beauty of the app is that it's totally customizable, you can use it however you want," Cummins said. "You can do any combination of photos and text. You could do a yes/no for something as simple as 'Are you going out tonight?' or 'Should I buy this pair of shoes?' and put a photo in. The RSVP feature is more for planning meetings with people, planning birthday parties, planning get-togethers where you're sending multiple people and you want it to actually go into your calendar with a specific time."</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>While you can send out these polls to a specific friend or create a group chat and poll them all at once, Begroupd also saves any poll you create and you can recycle and send them to others at a later time.</p><p><span>Kardashian fans will also be happy to know that Khloe and the Begroupd team also have access to a "blast" feature of sorts that allows them to send a one-way message or poll to the app's users. This allows them to get feedback from fans without having to worry about people spamming them with thousands of messages - users can only respond to the poll, but they can't message back.</span></p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>During my&#xa0;brief time using the app, I found the social-polling features surprisingly useful, especially for getting responses that were more than just a simple yes or no.
