Akash Ambani’s keeping up the family tradition of breaking into global lists

Mumbai, Jul 15 () Tata Motors' luxury car subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) on Wednesday said it has unveiled its MY (Model Year) 21 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models, including cars with new mild hybrid electric vehicle engine. The 2021 MY offering also includes 50th-anniversary special editions and India-specific cars. For India, MY 21 Range Rover will be available in standard wheel base (SWB), long wheel base (LWB) and special editions; and will be offered with a choice of either a 3-litre MHEV petrol or 3-litre new mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) diesel engine, the company said in a release. The MY 21 Range Rover Sport will be available in six derivatives and will be offered with 2-litre petrol and 5-litre supercharged petrol as well as 3-litre diesel engine options, it said. The company, however, did not announce the launch date for the latest offering or the prices. Special editions of Range Rover for India, which are available only on LWB, include Westminster, Westminster Black and Range Rover Fifty, it said. The models available on SWB include Vogue, Vogue SE and Autobiography, while on the models on the LWB are Vogue, Vogue SE, Autobiography and SV Autobiography. To celebrate 50 years of a motoring icon, the limited-run Range Rover Fifty will be restricted to just 1970 vehicles globally, in recognition of the year the original Range Rover was launched, the company said in the release. Nobody is going to buy Tesla - the company is now on its own

Vogue magazine <a href="http://www.vogue.com/1415025/apple-design-genius-jonathan-ive">profiled Apple's design leader, Jony Ive</a>. 
In the profile, we get a sense of what things he likes. As one of the most influential designers in the world, it's always interesting to learn about what influences him. 
According to the story, he likes suits from British tailor Thomas Mahon. He drives a Bently, an Aston Martin, or a Land Rover. He hates the design of American cars.
The thing that stood out the most to use was that he likes Castiglionis' Snoopy lamp. He also likes, "another Castiglioni that's a parabolic glass that sits quite low."
This is the Snoopy lamp on display at Sotheby's last year. This lamp shade is red since it was part of Ive's charity auction for Product Red. He made a custom version of the lamp. Normally, the lamp shade is black.

The lamp was designed by Italian brothers Achille and Pier Castiglioni in 1967. The lamp shade was inspired by the Snoopy cartoon character. The base of the lamp is Italian marble. Stardust calls it, "one of the undisputed mid century modern lighting classics."

This lamp is the Taccia Lamp, designed by Achille in 1958. It <a href="http://www.stardust.com/FLOSTACCIA.html">sells for $2,995</a>. The lamp is quite large, 21.25-inches tall. Stardust Modern, which sells the lamp says, "As far as classics go; the Flos Taccia lamp is the most beautiful lamp ever created."
It also quotes Castiglioni as saying, "We consider it the Mercedes of lamps, a symbol of success: perhaps because it looks like the shaft of a classical column."

Apple's Design Guru Jony Ive Really Likes This $1,100 Lamp From A Famous Italian Designer

The company's revenue growth<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/time-to-question-tim-cook-2014-4"> looked like it was going to grind to a halt</a> as consumers skipped the iPhone 5S. 
Tim Cook <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/is-tim-cook-going-to-break-his-promise-2014-4">promised new products "across 2014,"</a> but there was nothing new. There weren't even reliable rumors new products were coming until the end of the year.

Google <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-buying-nest-for-35-billion-2014-1">bought Nest</a>. Facebook bought WhatsApp, and Oculus. Apple bought... Apple shares. It announced in the Wall Street Journal that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-share-purchase-2014-2">it spent $14 billion on share buybacks</a>.
Pundits started getting antsy. Eric Jackson, a fund manager, who writes at various business sites <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-needs-to-be-aggressive-2014-2">implored Apple to do something</a>. 
"Apple needs to start picking off strategic assets as if their life depends on it, rather than continuing on with a plodding attitude that doesn't match the speed of their competitive environment," <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/ericjackson/2014/02/20/the-folly-of-stand-pat-apple/2/">said Jackson</a>. "It's time for Apple to get aggressive."
<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>A few months later, Apple listened. Sort of. It <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-buys-beats-2014-5">paid $3 billion for Beats</a>, which helped silence the critics that wanted Apple to do something.
However, it wasn't Beats that shut people up. It was these five things: The iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, Apple Pay, the Apple Watch, and Apple's stock rising ~54% from its low point on the year. The Apple Watch and Apple Pay are new product categories. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, are blockbusters that are selling like crazy. And stock price, well, duh.
So, all is good for Apple right now! Nobody is antsy, nobody is unhappy. Nobody wants Apple to make crazy acquisitions. 
Nobody, except for me. I still think Apple should make one crazy acquisition. 
I think it should buy Tesla. 
Why would Elon Musk want to sell Tesla to Apple? For one, I am assuming Apple offers a nice price for Tesla. After all, Apple has ~$155 billion in cash, and access to the debt markets if it wants to raise more cash. Tesla's market cap is ~$30 billion, so even at twice the price Apple could easily afford it.
There are other, more nuanced reasons for Tesla to sell, and Apple to buy. 
I started thinking about this again after Tesla reported earnings last week. During the company's earnings call, Tesla CEO Elon Musk was asked by analysts if Tesla had a problem stimulating demand for Teslas. Musk said the demand is not a problem, but supply, and manufacturing is. 
"People don't quite appreciate how hard it is to manufacture something. It is really hard," said Musk. "I have great respect for people who manufacture large numbers of complex objects because there's like several thousand unique parts in a car."
Oh, really? Hmmmmm. Who manages to manufacture large numbers of complex objects? Who, who, who? 
I know! Apple! Apple makes millions of iPhones, millions of iPads, and millions of Macs. 
<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>In fact, this is a specialty of Apple CEO Tim Cook. He's an operations and supply chain genius. Years ago, an industry <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/if-it-werent-for-tim-cook-the-ipad-would-have-cost-5000-2012-3">executive at one of Apple's rivals told us</a>, "If it weren't for Tim Cook the iPad would cost $5,000." 
Imagine what he could do to streamline and fix Tesla's manufacturing process. 
So, Apple buying Tesla could unlock Tesla's potential to manufacture more cars. But there's more to it. 
Elon Musk is a man of many interests. He's CEO of Tesla. He's also CEO of SpaceX, and he wants to go to Mars. He's chairman of Solar City. He has five children. He's going to send hundreds of satellites to outer space.
By selling to Apple, he gets one thing off his plate. Apple will still want Musk around to run Tesla, but he won't have to be as involved in the day-to-day of the company. Manufacturing problems will no longer be Musk's problems, they will be Cook's problems. 
<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>There's a lot of overlapping interest between the two companies.
Apple is a great software company. Tesla's software could use some work. Apple has been studying battery technology for years. Same with Tesla, so they could work on that for Tesla's cars, and Apple's gadgets.
From Apple's perspective, buying Tesla is a far-out idea. But it's less crazy than buying Beats. At least Tesla is trying to create a significantly better future for consumers. 
Here's why I think Apple should buy Tesla.
First and foremost, Apple gets Musk, one of the boldest, most imaginative, future-thinking entrepreneurs in the world. In this fantasy acquisition scenario, Musk is put on Apple's board, giving Cook access to Musk's bright mind on a permanent basis. 
Secondarily, but obviously of equal importance, Apple gets Tesla, which makes a premium product. The Model S is the iPhone of cars. It's much more expensive than its rivals, but its owners think it's worth the premium. The Model S, like the iPhone, is a product that combines hardware and software. 
<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Tesla's sales, expected to be around $4 billion, are still a drop in the bucket for Apple, so they probably won't move the needle all that much. For context, Apple sold $6.6 billion worth of Macs in the September quarter alone. Its total sales were $42 billion. 
However, Telsa has strong sales growth. Sales are expected to be up 86% this year compared to last year. And, as we established earlier, Tesla could sell more cars if it could produce more cars. Apple should be able to increase production, and thus, sales.
Why would Apple want to own a car company? Why does it want to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-introduces-the-apple-watch-2014-9">make a watch</a>? Why do people want <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apples-tim-cook-says-tv-is-stuck-in-the-70s-2014-9">Apple to make a TV</a>? Because this is what Apple does. It takes the most highly used devices in our lives and it makes them much better. 
Besides, Apple is interested in cars.
Steve Jobs wanted to make a car before he died, according to Apple board member Mickey Drexler. "Look at the car industry; it's a tragedy in America. Who is designing the cars?" Drexler said in 2012 at <a href="http://www.fastcompany.com/1837636/j-crew-ceo-apple-mickey-dexler-steve-jobs-icar-living-room-plans?partner=rss&amp;utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+fastcompany%2Fheadlines+%28Fast+Company+Headlines%29" target="_blank">a conference</a>. "Steve's dream before he died was to design an iCar." 
Jobs wasn't the only Apple executive interested in cars.
Eddy Cue, Apple's SVP of internet services, is on the board of Ferrari. Phil Schiller, Apple's SVP of marketing is really into cars. His Twitter bio reads, "Apple, Sports, Cars, Science, Scuba, Drums, Photography. It's racing season!" The tweet he has pinned to the top of his profile isn't an Apple product, but a photo of a Porsche.

He owns a "fleet of cars" including an Aston Martin, Land Rover, and a Bentley, <a href="http://www.vogue.com/1415025/apple-design-genius-jonathan-ive/">according to a recent profile in Vogue</a>. 
In that Vogue profile, Ive's good friend Marc Newson said American cars are on the list of "shit we hate ... It's as if a giant stuck his straw in the exhaust pipe and inflated them ... when you look at the beautiful proportions in other cars that have been lost."
Newson is an industrial designer who is now working in a part-time capacity for Apple. Newson <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-marc-newson-could-influence-apple-2014-9">once designed a car for Ford</a>.
Obviously, the auto market is something of interest to Apple's executives. Will Apple eventually make a car? I would guess that Apple will eventually make a car in the next 20 years. So, it could wait and let the market shake out, then build its own from scratch. Or, it could be bold and buy Tesla right now. 
Is Tesla going to be a bigger or a smaller company in 20 years? The future is somewhat difficult to predict, but I would guess it's going to be a bigger company in 20 years. So, Apple should get Tesla now while it's still small and affordable. 
Now is the time to be bold. Apple has boatloads of cash, investors are happy. Tim Cook should seize the future and buy Tesla. It's a lot better than just buying more and more Apple shares.
