New Delhi, Apr 21 () Having access to just the bare essentials in isolation is no longer doing the trick for those who shop online as they are now craving for luxuries like hair trimmers, board games and even automatic roti makers amid the ongoing lockdown, a new survey has revealed. The survey by e-commerce company Snapdeal noted that there has been a whopping "24 times" increase in the number of products being added to customers' shopping carts and wishlists, since the nationwide lockdown began on March 25."On average, buyers had nine items in their carts and wishlist," it said, adding that the price of these products range anything between Rs 68 to Rs 18,200. Unlike most online shopping portals that had temporarily stopped taking orders for non-essential items owing to the restrictions imposed during the lockdown, Snapdeal continued to receive and accept orders for all kinds of products, promising to ship them as soon as the restrictions are lifted.Four days after allowing e-commerce firms to also deliver non-essential items such as electronic goods and readymade garments, the government on April 19 said sale of non-essential items will continue to be prohibited during the lockdown period which last week got extended till May 3.Apparel, including t-shirts, bermuda shorts and lounge wear, accounted for nearly 40 per cent of the products being ordered, emerging as the clear favourite in the colossal non-essential category."Reflecting the current lifestyle of users, casual wear items like track pants and nightwear products including top and pyjama sets and nighties figured high on shopping lists. "Open sandals and flip flops priced between Rs 300 - 900 were another popular pick with buyers," said the survey.With salons and parlours shut, it is no surprise that "personal grooming products" are also high in demand at the time, followed closely by "household products".The survey noted that personal grooming products -- hair trimmer, epilator, beauty products and waxing strips -- were picked by over "80,000" customers, while household products saw an "80 per cent growth over usual demand trends". "Pressure cookers, roti makers, egg boilers, kitchen tools like multi-function scissors and automatic mops reflected the efforts on the parts of the users to manage their households with limited or no domestic help," the survey said.The current state of affairs have also given rise to a new category of products - work from home essentials, which have turned out to be a major attraction with customers.These range from headphones, laptop tables, home printers, and wi-fi routers to USB chargers, data cables, extension cords and back support pillows.Lockdown and the great Indian hankering for 'non-essentials' -- pyjama set, roti-maker, ludo and what not According to the survey, over "75 per cent" of the shopping lists were being generated by customers in non-metro cities, with Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh topping the charts."Bedsheets, towels, wall decorations, planting accessories and vegetable seeds for home gardens were other items in high demands. And the twitterati are enraged over the photo, criticising it for the regressive message it sends. At the center of it all it is the graffiti that endorses protecting girls by saying, ‘Kaise khaoge unke haath ki rotiya, jab paida hone nahi doge betiyan’. That translates to, ‘If you don’t let daughters come into the world, who’s going to cook for you?’ ‘Beti’ means daughter in Hindi and thus, the first part of the slogan reads, ‘Save your daughter’, which is simple enough. It’s the second part where things get sticky. "That's what your freezer is for."<h2>Chauhan skips the cheapest spices on the shelf</h2>If she's not making spices from scratch, she looks to Indian spices because they have a high potency.She also recommends that home cooks look for higher-quality spices to give their dishes more robust flavors."The cheaper the ingredient, the lesser the potency of the flavors is going to be," Chauhan said.But you don't have to buy the most expensive item on the shelf. Instead, she recommends looking for options in the middle.<h2>She also skips truffle oil and creamy dressings</h2>Chauhan <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/judges-share-ingredients-they-want-people-to-stop-using-on-cooking-shows">avoids truffle oil</a>, a polarizing artificially flavored ingredient. "Instead of putting on the oven and preheating and stuff, you just put things in the air fryer. Apart from the taste, it is 18 per cent GST that can be imposed on Parotas (or Parathas) because these need to be heated before consumption. Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra took to Twitter on Friday after the Karnataka bench of Authority for Advance Rulings (AAR) ruled that Parotas are not rotis and, therefore, can be taxed at higher 18 per cent GST compared to 5 per cent for rotis because they need to be heated before consumption. "With all the other challenges the country is facing, it makes you wonder if we should be worrying about an existential crisis for the 'Parota.' In any case, given Indian jugaad skills, I'm pretty sure there will be a new breed of 'Parotis' that will challenge any categorization," Mahindra tweeted. The Karnataka bench's order comes after a Bengaluru-based ready-to-cook food maker sought the authority for more clarification on GST rates for variants of parotas. As the post went viral, Twitterati flooded the social media with their reactions. One Twitter user said: "According to new GST ruling, Roti &amp; Chapatti : 5 per cent GST Tax, Porotta : 18 per cent GST Tax. 18% GST ruling on 'Parotas' cooks up storm on social media

By Yoshita Singh New York, May 13 () Michelin-Star chef Vikas Khanna, who has successfully distributed four million dry ration meals to the needy across 79 cities in India amidst the COVID-19 crisis, has called for solidarity and unity among the people to defeat the pandemic. Khanna, living in New York City, started an initiative in April to create a supply chain to ensure dry ration is procured and distributed to orphanages, old-age homes and leprosy centers as the coronavirus cases increased in India and the government implemented a lockdown to control the spread of the virus.In less than a month, the 48-year-old world-renowned chef, author and film-maker has been able to procure and distribute landmark four million dry ration meals or more than 3,100 quintals of ration, including rice, lentils and wheat flour, to orphanages and old-age homes and other needy individuals across 79 cities in India.Khanna expressed his deep gratitude to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), its Director General Satya Narayan Pradhan and the force's personnel who he says have been working tirelessly on the ground to collect, package and distribute the ration across India."My hope is solidarity. Solidarity is everything. We can beat corona and we should all be united to figure out how to defeat this virus," Khanna told here.He said in the current time of deep suffering, people have to support each other. "I'm focused on ensuring how to reach as many more people as possible to help them in these challenging times," he said."I'm not doing any favour. I'm giving back to my country. Apart from the kitchen, a chef has a huge responsibility and this gave an opportunity to me" to fulfill my responsibility.Khanna recalls that his massive exercise to provide dry ration and meals was triggered by a spam email that he received. Khanna made a donation through the email but was later made aware that it was spam.However, Khanna realised that places such as old-age homes and orphanages would face difficulty in procuring their ration and food supplies due to the restrictions that had been put in place because of the lockdown."These places usually don't have ration or food supply that can last months and many depend on daily donations," he said.Khanna, who could not travel to India due to COVID19-related international travel restrictions, used social media to convey his message that he is creating a supply chain to help feed millions of people across India and will provide dry ration to old-age homes, orphanages and hospitals.He recalled that he faced challenges as he began coordinating with vendors and suppliers in India to procure and distribute the ration. "I burnt my fingers at the outset," he said adding that he was duped by a supplier in Bangalore who took money from him for the ration but did not supply the goods.The incident left him disheartened and demoralised but his mother motivated him to not let one setback stop him from helping hundreds of thousands of people in need. "My mother said that I burnt my fingers several times during my culinary journey and that I should not let this one incident come in the way of my focus to help others in this difficult time."He was then advised to approach the NDRF to help him in the distribution of the ration. "Everyday I receive images of NDRF personnel, working on the ground and distributing the dry ration across districts, small towns and cities," Khanna said, adding that he could expand the reach of his initiative to many cities due to the efficiency and capability of the specialised force.He said the process grew and now more than 350 people are working on the ground in India to provide ration and meals to those impacted by the COVID19 crisis. "I learnt the technique of Dibba Roti by watching him years ago. Plz help me reach out to him asap. This is the true heritage of our country and we have to protect these treasures," Khanna had tweeted. He was soon able to locate Satyam and Khanna supplied him with a year's worth of ration, a "Guru Dakshina" to the elderly person.Khanna says it is very important to support people like Satyam, who are treasures of Indian cuisine but are reeling from the impact of the coronavirus crisis. His job these days at least partially consists of traveling the world giving public talks on Amazon's tech and privately meeting with customers, from insurance giant Allianz to tiny startups, he tells Business Insider."The best point of my life absolutely is meeting with customers and understanding the kind of things that they're trying to achieve," he said. "The fact that I get to travel the world."He loves the job - so much so that he produced a new TV series called "Now Go Build," available now on Amazon <keyword id="46801" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="prime">Prime</keyword> Video, where he trots the globe showcasing startups who are saving the world with tech. The pitch: Think Anthony Bourdain, but about tech instead of food.(By the way, Amazon Web Services CEO Andy Jassy is also listed as producer on the show, as are others. When we asked about what being a producer entailed, he laughed and said, "There's a lot of waiting.")So why a TV show?"So I've been traveling the world...of course you meet many enterprises, but you also meet many startups and quite a few of these startups are really tackling hard problems, right? Not just trying to find the next consumer thingy that people may like," he said.<h2>The first episode</h2>He offers for example, the first episode of "Now Go Build," about a Jakarta-based startup called Hara Token.Indonesia has many small landholder farmers that produce important crops like rice. But many of those farmers are below the poverty line, and stay there, in large part because they have no government-issued ID. Hara Token uses blockchain to record the farmers' identities, crops, and the land they own "so that they can actually get bank loans. Before that they had to go to a loan shark who will charge them 60%, and they have to mortgage against their crop before it is even grown," he said.Other episodes feature companies like Singapore startup Zimplistic, makers of a bread machine that uses AI to produce perfectly-baked roti, an Indian flatbread. Another episode showcases Aquabyte, a computer vision startup that monitors fish for salmon farmers; Africam, a video streaming wildlife startup funding conservation organizations; and the ReDi School, an German organization teaching refugees to code.<h2>Not intended as advertising</h2>While these startups clearly all use Amazon's cloud, the TV show doesn't specifically hawk the company's wares.Instead, it features Werner interviewing founders, employees, or customers. He wanted to share his favorite part of his job while also helping these startups get more "exposure," he says. There's another, not so subtle message going on here too. Amidst calls to regulate and break up big tech, executives at Amazon are constantly talking about how technology should not just be feared; it can be used to save the world.And a techie like Vogels is a true believer - who also happens to have access to Amazon's massive video production resources."So why don't we do something together to show the world what really cool things technology is doing, solving hard problems?" he explained. So tell us about Youwecan ventures 
I wanted to start a few business opportunities. The online world is quite big and I want to invest in some future ventures. I would be helping young entrepreneurs to expand the business and make India a better place. We have plans to invest Rs 40-50 crores over next few years. We expect to raise Rs 250-300 crores from other investor by 2020.

Tell us about your everyday fitness regime? 
My regime is mostly off-season, because that’s when I can put in the extra hours. It’s very difficult to put in that time when the season starts. Of course, then it is about maintaining fitness by doing weights in the gym and very light running. But running is something that is always required. 
 
What is your diet routine like? 
I concentrate on eating good carbs and more of protein. I take brown rice instead of normal rice and use gluten-free atta instead of wheat roti. Sticking to this diet helps me maintain good health and stay fit. 
 
What is your motivation factor? 
My motivation comes from within. I am one of those who believe in fighting hard and never giving up. My mother is my biggest strength and gives me immense courage.
