Future of Work 2023 ⁠— a confluence of the brightest minds reimagining the new era of work, workplace and workforce

Global online higher education provider <keyword id="2008319" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Upgrad">upGrad</keyword> on Monday became another unicorn from the country, after it announced to close a total of $185 million funding round at a market valuation of $1.2 billion. The company raised fresh funds from Temasek, IFC (International Finance Corporation, a sister organisation of <keyword id="6354424" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-bank">World Bank</keyword>) and IIFL. "We are very focused on our path to being in the top three-five companies globally in edtech and serving the one billion workforce across the age group of 18-60. We are pleased with the investor interest ever since we opened up for a fundraise, and had our maiden raise from Temasek, followed by IFC and IIFL in the last 60 days," said <keyword id="25725" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ronnie-Screwvala">Ronnie Screwvala</keyword>, Chairperson and Co-founder, upGrad. In April, UpGrad had raised $120 million from Temasek, a global investment company headquartered in Singapore. "We will announce further updates on M&amp;As, and unlocking value as they unfold. Recent reports suggested that company is in advanced talks for a $400 million fundraise at a valuation of $4 billion. upGrad has earmarked $250 million for mergers and acquisitions (M&amp;As) over the next seven-nine months, as it strengthens non-linear growth strategy. upGrad is set to cross $500 million annual revenue run rate by March 2022 and is looking to raise close to $400 million at a $4 billion valuation. upGrad has built out a strong tech platform and deep immersive learning experience with high touch-points to capture close to 70 per cent of the Indian higher education market for working professionals. The opportunities are available across departments like learning experience, delivery, marketing and programme, along with sales which will remain predominant. The edtech leader said that it will also hire people from its own learners' talent pool through its subsidiary upGrad Rekrut, which is a recruitment and staffing solutions firm. Online higher education platform upGrad to hire 1,000 people in India in next three months from more than 100 campuses

Online higher education company <keyword id="2008319" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Upgrad">upGrad</keyword> on Monday announced it has acquired video-enabled learning <keyword id="11309728" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="solutions-provider-impartus">solutions provider Impartus</keyword>, committing over ₹150 crore towards the buyout as well as to boost its growth. Impartus, now a 100 per cent subsidiary of upGrad, has been rebranded as 'upGrad Campus'. 'upGrad Campus' will target higher education institutions and college students, with its learning tools and world-class content, in an integrated solution, the company said in a statement, aiming to close the <keyword id="44623" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Financial-Year">financial year</keyword> 2022 with nearly ₹85 crore revenue. "The synergy of Impartus and upGrad will pave the way for augmenting college education by helping learners upskill with new-age courses, thus elevating their candidature for better career prospects," said Amit Mahensaria, CEO, upGrad Campus. Online higher education company upGrad acquires learning solutions provider Impartus for ₹150 crore in search of growth

This came after the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her latest budget speech said that the government will launch a full-fledged ‘degree-level’ online courses in India and that too by top 100 national ranking institutions. This is aimed at providing quality education to the underprivileged. The edtech startup said that it is eyeing ₹1,000 crore revenue in 2020-21, thanks to the growing average revenue per user (ARPU). Screwvala said that India is among the countries with the lowest ARPU across sectors like media, telecom, content, retail and others. "The last three years at upGrad, owing to our high investment in content, learning experience, diversity of programmes, deep tech, strong university alliances and a high over 80 per cent completion rates, have put us at a clear inflection point for this decade," he said. He noted that there are multiple aspects to saying whether automation is going to replace humans in their jobs. The first of those aspects is whether artificial intelligence (AI) is ready for it. According to Garg, AI is not developed enough to be at that stage, however it has the potential of getting there in the future. Again, some jobs may have to work in alignment with this deeptech technology. “I can put it on autopilot and be feasibly comfortable. So things are improving a lot. Now let's take sales as an example. I'm trying to hire a salesperson, I will start evaluating this person based on their emotional touch. Are they going to be able to close the deal or not, can they negotiate with the buyer or not?” he noted. According to a PwC <a href="https://www.pwc.com/hu/hu/kiadvanyok/assets/pdf/impact_of_automation_on_jobs.pdf">report </a>which estimates that 40% of jobs can be automated in the next 15 years, digital and softer skills are going to be the demand of the new age businesses. In 2017, <a href="https://www.deakinco.com/uploads/Whitepaper/deloitte-au-economics-deakin-soft-skills-business-success-170517.pdf">Deloitte</a> also reported that "soft skill-intensive occupations will account for two-thirds of all jobs by 2030." According to a<a href="https://www.muchskills.com/blog/soft-skills-skills-of-the-future"> blogpost </a>by Sweden-based HR-tech platform MuchSkills, the new age technologies — like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) or robotics — can automate a number of human tasks, they will not be able to replicate emotional, social and cognitive skills imbibed by humans. “Between 1980 and 2012, jobs requiring high levels of social interaction grew by nearly 12 percentage points as a share of the US labour force. Math-intensive but less social jobs – including many STEM occupations – shrank by 3.3 percentage points over the same period,” wrote David J Deming in a paper titled<a href="https://scholar.harvard.edu/files/ddeming/files/deming_socialskills_may2017_final.pdf"> The Growing Importance Of Social Skills In The Labor Market</a>. <ul><li>Amid the outbreak of <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword>, the only way ahead for every kind of business — including education — is online. </li><li>In an interview with Business Insider, <keyword id="25725" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ronnie-Screwvala">Ronnie Screwvala</keyword>, co-founder of <keyword id="23248" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Online-learning">online learning</keyword> platform <keyword id="2008319" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Upgrad">upGrad</keyword> explained how the pandemic will spark an online learning roar. </li><li>Screwvala also agrees that the completion rate for online courses is high at 80% — and is set to grow.</li></ul>The outbreak of Coronavirus has declared a health emergency across the globe. If pandemic continues to spread, the only way ahead for every kind of business — including education — is online. In an interview with Business Insider, Ronnie Screwvala, co-founder and chairman of online learning platform upGrad explained how the pandemic will spark an online learning roar. “From school closures to indefinitely postponed exams, the first thing that is affected when any kind of riots, climate change, pandemic hits a country is education,” he said. In a world like that, the future of learning has gone online with the technology and innovation taking the centre stage. “That is going to be more in the future than ever,” he said. Disruption in the education space Screwvala says that disruption in learning can be detrimental. “If we don’t go to work for two days, it's one part. But in learning, there has to be a certain sense of discipline. If the access to faculty and learning is not there and the exams that students are preparing to get postponed by three months — that’s a major setback,” he said.

 This is where upGrad is trying to bridge the gap. He said that the edtech platforms are collaborating with universities to roll-out degree level courses. “It's not replacing universities, but the infrastructure of universities is still very limited with a certain number of seats available. Any university starts courses around June. On the other hand, edtech platforms like upGrad offer courses four different times a year and nothing gets disrupted,” he said. This has given edtech a major push. Screwvala also agrees that the completion rate for such courses has also witnessed a growth. upGrad offers online degree in undergraduate and postgraduate courses and all fields of management. “upGrad has an 80% completion rate — and it is going to be higher. It's not a choice factor, it is a part of the degree course. Today, you can get a degree from university of Mumbai without coming to Mumbai. You can be in a small town and aspire to have a degree from top notch universities,” he said. From the employer’s point of view The pandemic has gone so deep that many companies asked employees to work from home and restrict travel. The virus has already affected people in over 75 countries and is showing few signs of slowing down. “More companies are asking their employees to work from home, believing that productivity won’t get affected — which means that this is the future of work and interaction where the companies no longer need to assemble people in places,” Screwvala said. Given the concerns around coronavirus, the shares of video conferencing platforms — Zoom video and Skype also soared while the stocks of those mandating face to face interaction for business are plummeting, including automobiles and airlines. This explains how offices are leveraging online platforms. According to Screwvala, the companies can also trade off the flexi work opportunity with office training. For instance, “Now that I have allowed you flexi hours, I need you to complete this online course. So work will get more demanding over time — and that is where efficiency will go up,” he explained.
