<ul class="summary-list"><li>The $330,000 <keyword id="925742" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Rolls-Royce-Ghost">Rolls-Royce Ghost</keyword> sedan recently underwent a full redesign for the first time in 10 years, complete with starlight patterns twinkling across its ceiling and dashboard. </li><li>The car's Austin debut was my first time in a Rolls-Royce. My test car had a full $100,000 in optional features, bringing its sticker to $430,000.</li><li>The experience was a clash of two realities: the Rolls-Royce I'd fabricated in my mind and the Rolls-Royce that surrounded me.</li></ul><p>To most, a Rolls-Royce is more an idea than a car. It might have four wheels, seat belts, and a steering wheel, but those are secondary to the abstraction: a land yacht that doesn't roll across roads but <a href="https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=695979107489036">slides across glass</a>, floating on a cloud of affluence and ostentatious display. Few have the status or wealth necessary to climb through its coach doors, which automatically open outward at the tug of a switch or push of a button, yet it's hard to imagine anything other than a cloud of opulence waiting for passengers on the other side. </p><p>That's the thing about a Rolls-Royce. It comes with expectations — nay, conceptions — whether you're at the wheel or your chauffeur is. </p><div type="image" title="Rolls-Royce Ghost." height="2384" width="3996" msid="79153569" hostid="261"></div><p>That includes the $330,000 Ghost, a sedan introduced in 2009 as a smaller, less expensive choice for those not quite in the ballpark of the $460,000 Rolls-Royce Phantom yet. The Ghost can be optioned up toward the Phantom's starting price, of course, but not everyone wants to spend that extra cash. </p><p>The Ghost went relatively unchanged for a decade after its debut, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2021-rolls-royce-ghost-compared-outgoing-model-2020-9">aside from a few tweaks and a 2014 refresh</a>. But earlier this year, Rolls teased the all-new Ghost along with its all-new identity: "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rolls-royce-ghost-post-opulence-luxury-sedan-minimalist-new-design-2020-7">post opulence</a>," aka displays of exorbitant wealth that don't "shout, but rather, whisper."</p><p>Minimalism, you might call it. You might also call it "trying to blend in amid the inevitable peasant uprising."</p><div type="image" title="Rolls-Royce Ghost." height="3105" width="2132" msid="79153575" hostid="261"></div><p>Rolls-Royce said the new Ghost, like the old one, is designed to "resonate with clients for the next 10 years." But today's Rolls-Royce is different from the one of 2010: Between then and 2019, the average age of the company's customers <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rolls-royce-ceo-says-customers-younger-2010-2019-1">dropped from 56 to 43</a>.</p><p>There wasn't just an age shift. Rolls noticed a character shift, too. </p><div type="image" title="The Rolls-Royce Ghost." height="2142" width="3911" msid="79153580" hostid="261"></div><p>"Due to Ghost's energetic, dynamic personality, clients came to realise that the Rolls-Royce brand could offer more than a chauffeur-driven experience," the company said upon announcing the new car. "Indeed, in the United States of America and areas of Europe, clients were self-driving their Ghost from the very early stages of its introduction."</p><p>That's why you might notice the Phantom to be more back-heavy and the Ghost to be more even — one is meant for chauffeur duty and the other for shared responsibility.</p><div type="image" title="rolls royce ghost phantom" height="1008" width="1532" msid="79153586" hostid="261"></div><p>The only things that would be carried over from the old Ghost into the new one, Rolls said, were the automaker's Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament and its <a href="https://jalopnik.com/the-incredible-majesty-of-a-rolls-royce-umbrella-1795441489">famous umbrellas</a>.</p><p>Yet the final product, which debuted in Austin in September, took <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2021-rolls-royce-ghost-compared-outgoing-model-2020-9">strong cues from the last car</a>.</p><div type="image" title="The Rolls-Royce Ghost." height="2328" width="4016" msid="79153591" hostid="261"></div><p>Stepping into a Rolls-Royce for the first time, as I did at the Ghost launch, was a clash of two realities: the Rolls-Royce I'd fabricated in my mind and the Rolls-Royce I was actually inside. It was both this distant idea and this thing that was right in front of me, at the same time. The extraterrestrial became the terrestrial, with me sitting right in the center of it as the carmaker's famed starlight headliner (now with shooting stars!) glowed above me.</p><p>It might be noon and clear as day outside, but in a Rolls-Royce, you remain a star among stars. At least, I think that's what they're trying to tell you. It's what I'd want to hear from someone on the other side of my $500,000 check. </p><div type="image" title="The Rolls-Royce Ghost." height="2381" width="3986" msid="79153595" hostid="261"></div><p>My first trip in the new Ghost came with a chauffeur, who drove me to a launch event as I sat in the back seat poking and handling everything I could. I now regret leaving finger grease all over the car.</p><p>"Have you felt the floor mats?" the driver asked. </p><div type="image" title="The Rolls-Royce Ghost." height="2451" width="4733" msid="79153599" hostid="261"></div><p>I had, in a way. Immediately upon getting in, the ground below me became soft. Pillowy. How I imagine every billionaire's white, ethereal movie room — or whatever the most comfortable area of their house is — would be like to sit in.</p><p>I then took another look at my black heeled combat boots, which seemed fashionable and appropriate just minutes ago, and remembered I'd last worn them to trudge around New York City in January. They now seemed dirty. Unworthy to grace this pristine white lambswool. As if I should take them off immediately. </p><p><em>But if I take them off</em>, I thought, <em>will I look like a weirdo trying to dig her stinky toes into this fancy car's fancy amenities?</em> The classic lose-lose situation. </p><div type="image" title="The Rolls-Royce Ghost." height="1866" width="4014" msid="79153603" hostid="261"></div><p>So, no, I hadn't felt them physically. But I'd felt them, socially and emotionally. I took the driver's words as a cue to reach down and actually feel them without looking like a total nerd, my fingers getting lost in what must have been inches of wool. </p><p>I don't remember what I said in response, but I do remember feeling even worse about the shoes.</p><div type="image" title="The Rolls-Royce Ghost." height="2360" width="4014" msid="79153605" hostid="261"></div><p>Actually driving the car came with a host of other crises. "Get in and familiarize yourself," the team at the launch told us. After a few minutes, someone came to my window. "Any questions?" </p><p>A few. <em>What does this button do? What about the fancy dial thingy in the center-console area? How do I adjust the mirrors? How did someone like me, a lowly Criss Angel stan who happens to write about cars, get on this invite list?</em> </p><p>As to not look too stupid, I boiled my list down to one question — the existential question, which I'd never really asked before and didn't think to research beforehand. "How do I put it in 'drive'?"</p><div type="image" title="The Rolls-Royce Ghost." height="2661" width="3992" msid="79153609" hostid="261"></div><p>And off we went. Some of the first entries in my meticulous drive notes on the Ghost went like this: </p><ul><li>WHERE ARE THE CLIMATE CONTROLS </li><li>Keep reaching to pull the door closed, but you have to use the button so the car will close the door for you! I am a sucker for manual labor!</li><li>THE VOLUME KNOB WAS RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME THE WHOLE TIME </li></ul><div type="image" title="The Rolls-Royce Ghost." height="1583" width="3982" msid="79153611" hostid="261"></div><p>You see, a Rolls-Royce interior is its own species, not to be bothered with silly things like "labels" or "familiar placement of controls," because labels and familiarity are for those unworthy of a $430,000 car like this one — complete with its $332,000 starting price and $100,000 in optional features. A Rolls-Royce interior is one you have to adjust to, where the buttons and knobs aren't in the same place as they usually are and where the climate controls don't show the interior temperatures in blocky, alarm-clock looking numbers. </p><p>Everything inside of a Rolls is delicately integrated into a silky design, meant to be beautiful to the eyes and easy to the touch. If you're used to driving cars not in the half-million price range, that makes it hard as hell to find anything. </p><div type="image" title="The Rolls-Royce Ghost." height="3992" width="2661" msid="79153767" hostid="261"></div><p>After several rounds of "Damn it! Damn it! It's cold in here!" at stoplights, I finally found the most important object on my search: the climate dials. Their red and blue colorations were so faint that I hadn't picked up on them, and their designs so smooth that it never occurred to me that those dials did anything. </p><p>I slid the smooth dial all the way red, sat back, and found peace. </p><div type="image" title="The Rolls-Royce Ghost." height="1656" width="2846" msid="79153772" hostid="261"></div><p>The peace wasn't long for this world. I hadn't cared much about the radio up until that point, but you know what they say about life: When you solve one problem, you discover three more. </p><p>Soft snaps from the intro to 2 Chainz's "It's a Vibe" began to bump through what I can only assume were the fanciest speakers I've ever listened to, at volume levels far too low for such a tune.</p><p>I instinctively reached for a volume knob near the bottom corner of the infotainment screen, to be met with nothing. I poked around the screen. Nothing. I twisted and tugged every knob I could reach. Nothing. I zoomed in and out of the navigation map with one knob. No luck.</p><div type="image" title="The Rolls-Royce Ghost." height="2342" width="3992" msid="79153775" hostid="261"></div><p>All the while, 2 Chainz bragged through my still-quiet speakers: <em>OK, so I got the ambiance just where I want it.</em> </p><p>Lucky you, 2 Chainz. </p><p>I found the volume knob about 10 minutes after the song ended, tucked so perfectly into the dashboard's open-pore wood that I thought it was there for decoration. The radio was, finally, a vibe. I was obviously not.</p><div type="image" title="The Rolls-Royce Ghost." height="2411" width="3981" msid="79153788" hostid="261"></div><p>The Ghost, once you learn its alien rituals and control knobs, is a mystical being. It's a staple of not only the wealthiest among us, but what awaits them: a vertical-slat grille that's iconic in design alone, yet has a warm backlight to make the car glow at night. Rolls' staple starlight headliner, made not from stamping the parts through a factory but by cutting fiber optics by hand to create individual stars in a "random but uniform" imitation of the night sky. A 6.75-liter, twin-turbocharged V12 engine whose claimed 563 horsepower has an unmatched duality: slick and quiet for chauffeurs, yet able to rocket up to speed with a punch of the gas pedal.</p><p>Features so intricate that each fold-away tray table, cupholder, and emblem can slide into various positions so gracefully, they're more reminiscent of ballet performers than anything belonging in a car. A hood emblem so fancy that should you fear theft, it'll fold into the bonnet and hide away until you've returned to your gated community. </p><p>The Ghost is defined by its extras — unnecessary in theory, yet magical in practice. But much like Disneyland or whatever <a href="https://www.popularmechanics.com/space/moon-mars/a34525209/spacex-laws-mars-elon-musk-starlink-app/">loosely governed</a> hellscape Elon Musk wants to create on Mars, I guess anything can be magical at a certain price point. </p><div type="image" title="The Rolls-Royce Ghost." height="2317" width="4008" msid="79153791" hostid="261"></div><p>Before I stepped into one, a Rolls-Royce was more of a concept than anything concrete: a floating, mystical being unconnected to the road or world around it, because the world around it simply isn't worthy. It still largely is a concept — a big, sparkly cloud in my mind labeled "fancy."</p><p>But driving the Ghost came with the realization that it's more of a car than I ever imagined. The road below and the world around it don't disappear, they're simply numbed — with surrounding cars heard and potholes felt, ever so faintly, to remind its owners that they aren't in Heaven yet, but they could definitely afford the penthouse suite when they get there. </p><div type="image" title="The Rolls-Royce Ghost." height="3996" width="2387" msid="79153803" hostid="261"></div><p>As for me, a humble blogger cosplaying a Rolls-Royce driver for the day, I learned a few things about myself as well. Namely, I learned there are two types of people in this world: those whose $430,000 Rolls-Royce Ghosts include fancy lambswool floor mats, and bystanders who just want to dig their crusty appendages into them. </p><p>"Oh dude," my colleague Kristen Lee said. Driving a $430,000 Rolls-Royce Ghost reminded me that opulence has no limits and neither does my mediocrity

<ul class="summary-list"><li>This week, Rolls-Royce debuted its new Ghost, its roughly $332,000 sedan. </li><li>Rolls calls the new Ghost "designed, crafted and engineered from the ground up," and said it takes a more minimalist approach to luxury.</li><li>But the new car takes a lot of cues from the outgoing model, which debuted in 2009 and underwent a 2014 refresh. </li></ul><p>The <keyword id="925742" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Rolls-Royce-Ghost">Rolls-Royce Ghost</keyword>, which just got its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2021-rolls-royce-ghost-new-specs-features-2020-8#open-pore-wood-is-available-14">first full overhaul</a> in a decade, doesn't need much of an introduction. It's the $300,000 sedan people often buy to be driven around in — not by a computer, but by a human chauffeur, because a computer won't make a show of opening the doors for you when you get in and out. </p><p>But those looking for an all-new ride won't find one in the new Ghost. While the second-generation Ghost is distinct from the outgoing car, Rolls tweaked, rather than overhauled, a lot of style and comfort elements.</p><div type="image" title="rolls royce ghost" height="638" width="2054" msid="77916865" hostid="261"></div><p>The Ghost debuted in 2009, a smaller and less expensive (lol) option for folks who had $300,000 to spare but couldn't quite commit to a $450,000 Rolls-Royce Phantom. You know, everyday problems. It underwent a few facelifts and changes afterward, including the most recent 2014 "Ghost Series II" refresh pictured in the above comparison, and a switch to an <a href="https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/car-technology/news/a27810/rolls-royce-to-switch-to-aluminum-space-frame-underpinning-over-steel/">aluminum space-frame platform</a> announced in 2016.</p><p>The idea of appealing to the $300,000 sedan market turned out to be a good one: Rolls calls the Ghost the "most successful product in the company's 116-year history."</p><div type="image" title="The new Rolls Royce Ghost_14" height="1667" width="2500" msid="77916867" hostid="261"></div><p>Rolls-Royce said in creating the first entirely new Ghost in a decade, the only things the designers carried over were the famous Spirit of Ecstasy emblem and the umbrellas. </p><p>The new, <a href="https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/2021-rolls-royce-ghost-official-debut/">$332,000</a> Ghost thus prides itself on a few things: a more minimalist approach, updated exterior and interior styling, illuminating its branding even more luxuriously, eliminating panel lines, all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering, and a 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine in place of the outgoing 6.6-liter one. </p><p>Rolls says this more minimalist approach — which it has dubbed "Post Opulence" — is "perfectly in tune with the times." Take that as you will.</p><div type="image" title="rolls royce ghost" height="640" width="2054" msid="77916870" hostid="261"></div><p>But Rolls kept the vibe and shape of the Ghost the same, because everyone knows a Rolls-Royce when they see one. Exterior changes came in a few main areas, including more squared-off headlights with sharper illumination lines; a single black grille opening that wraps up and around, kind of like a 64-bit handlebar mustache; and an all-around, slightly more square appearance. </p><p>With the updated styling, the new Ghost slots itself right in as a mini Phantom: big, flashy, and extremely rectangular.</p><div type="image" title="rolls royce phantom" height="3712" width="5568" msid="77916875" hostid="261"></div><p>Inside, you'll find a lot of familiar shapes. The infotainment layout and controls don't appear to have changed much, but the accents are new: available open-pore wood in lieu of the glossy stuff, and the new "GHOST" branding across the dashboard, lit with more LEDs than you've probably got in your house.</p><p>That's right, the fancy "GHOST" bit on the left is not a screen. It's a bunch of LED "stars" illuminating the dashboard.</p><div type="image" title="rolls royce ghost" height="636" width="2052" msid="77916881" hostid="261"></div><p>Other elements of the car are simplified, yet keep the general character of the Ghost. Rolls wanted to focus on the quality of the materials with this car, not "busy stitching and other devices that create an illusion of luxury by dressing products lacking in substance in a premium skin." Ouch. </p><div type="image" title="The new Rolls Royce Ghost_13" height="1667" width="2500" msid="77916884" hostid="261"></div><p>The Ghost has a 50:50 weight distribution, Rolls said, kind of like a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mazda-mx-5-miata-club-manual-specs-horsepower-sports-car-2020-7">Mazda Miata,</a> or two elephants on a seesaw. Its V12 will make a claimed 563 brake horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque, and it'll do so in near silence, as far as the passengers are concerned.</p><p>So little noise reaches the cabin, in fact, that Rolls-Royce said the silence <a href="https://www.press.rolls-roycemotorcars.com/rolls-royce-motor-cars-pressclub/article/detail/T0314105EN/rolls-royce-reveals-formula-for-serenity%E2%80%99?language=en">was disorienting</a> and made a whole show of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnQldFBSzt4">creating a serene undertone</a> for passengers to hear instead. </p><div type="image" title="rolls royce ghost" height="640" width="2052" msid="77916886" hostid="261"></div><p>For the new car, Rolls carried over its concept of a satellite-aided transmission, which "draws GPS data to pre-select the optimum gear" for whatever the car is about to do, such as taking an upcoming corner.</p><p>That's paired with a camera system to monitor the road ahead and adjust the suspension to approach it in the smoothest possible way, creating what Rolls calls a "sense of flight on land" — flight without turbulence or the sound of the person in the middle seat snoring, of course.</p><div type="image" title="rolls royce ghost" height="640" width="2052" msid="77916890" hostid="261"></div><p>From the outside, the new Ghost will be bigger than the old one in every dimension. It's about 5.4 inches longer, 8.3 inches wider, and an inch taller than <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/rolls-royce/ghost-2020">the 2020 model</a>, yet remains in the 5,600-pound range — the approximate weight of <a href="https://www.toyota.com/tundra/features/weights_capacities/8261/8252/8275">a Toyota Tundra</a>.</p><p>Rolls expects the new Ghost to get between 10.5 and 10.7 mpg in the city, compared to the outgoing 2020 model's <a href="https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&amp;id=420222022">EPA-estimated</a> 12 mpg.</p><div type="image" title="rolls royce ghost" height="640" width="2038" msid="77916892" hostid="261"></div><p>Rolls-Royce calls the new Ghost "designed, crafted and engineered from the ground up" when compared to the last one. But in a lot of ways, it follows much of the ethos of the outgoing model — the model that became the most popular car in Rolls' history. </p><p>That's because, at the end of the day, you give the people what they like. And the people seem to like their Ghost just the way it is.</p>

It's a car whose plushness and comfort is the gold standard to which all others are measured.</p><p>For the first time in 15 years, we get a brand-new from the ground up Phantom. </p><p><span>"The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/rolls-royce-phantom-review-2016-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Phantom</a> is the pinnacle of the Rolls-Royce brand in its truest sense," Rolls-Royce Motor Cars CEO Torsten Müller-ötvös told Business Insider in an interview ahead of the car's unveiling last July. "It embodies all of the qualities Rolls-Royce is well known for. It starts with the magic carpet ride, the quality, the precision design, and engineering."<br /><br />"It embodies what Sir Henry Royce said, 'Take the best that exists and make it even better,' and that is exactly what the Phantom is in every single detail," Müller-ötvös added.</span></p><p>Now, we finally get a chance to experience it in living color.</p><p>On Wednesday, Business Insider was able to take a brief drive in a long-wheelbase Phantom through the streets of New York City. Even though we were only able to spend about an hour or so with the car, it was enough time for us to get a feel for its luxury and performance. </p><p>We will have a full review of the Phantom at a later date after a comprehensive road test of the new Rolls flagship. </p><p><span>The standard wheelbase Phantom starts at about $450,000. In fact, it's the eighth generation in the nameplate that dates back to 1925.</p><p>Recently, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/rolls-royce-phantom-first-drive-photos-2018-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Business Insider was able to spend an afternoon</a> with the all-new Phantom, including about an hour behind the wheel of the behemoth.</p><p>The Rolls-Royce Phantom will be available in two body styles, the stand wheelbase and the extended wheelbase which adds eight extra inches in length. In case you're wondering, the extended wheelbase Phantom is 19.5 feet long.</p><p>Under the hood is a new 563 horsepower, 6.75 liter, twin-turbocharged V12 engine. According to Rolls, our extra-long Phantom can hit 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds. The standard Phantom is about 0.2 seconds faster. Both versions have a top speed of 155 mph.</p><p>We were impressed by the new Phantom driving dynamics thanks to its new four-wheel-steering system. It's not exactly nimble, but far more fleet of foot than you would expect from a vehicle of its size. However, the real place to be is in the back where you can stretch out and get a feel for the serenity and smoothness of its passenger experience. It's what Rolls-Royce calls the "magic carpet ride."</p><p>The standard wheelbase Phantom starts at about $450,000. But our test car is an extended wheelbase model that is eight inches longer than the standard Phantom and starts at $530,000. It's supposed to be incredibly... amazing and opulent inside, yeah, yeah, yeah, so where did they cut corners? What did they not, like, what's not up to the level of what I would think of for Rolls-Royce?</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> What do you see so far?</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> Where is the plastic, you know? Well, I mean, you know, the visors look, you know, the visors are a little bit like, well, maybe this is from the BMW parts bin.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> Right.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> Right? And there's some little bits and pieces of plastic here and there. But for the most part, for the most part...</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> I think it looks, yeah, I think it looks good so far.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> The whole thing is pretty beautifully executed. Rich: Right, no, absolutely. Matt: I'm a big fan of the interior here.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> I like the interior a lot.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> The interior has won me over. I think the interior is worth $410,000.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> You know what I think is cool? The digital-analog gauges look kinda cool.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> Yeah, and everybody loves the power reserve instead of the tachometer.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> That is kinda cool too.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> You know, I'm on the power now, so I'm depleting my power reserve.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> Right, so you have 80% left, power. Matt: Right, so it's the reverse of a typical tachometer, you know, where instead of it showing me the engine speed, it's showing me how much...</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> How much power you have left. Right.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> Exactly. So, we're supposed to have a 0 to 60 in 4 1/2 seconds here, so we're gonna see if we get more or less 0 to 60 in 4 1/2. One, 1,000,</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> Oh, yeah!</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> two, 1,000, three, 1,000, four, 1,000. I got four seconds.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> It gets up and goes, for sure. 500 and, what, 60ish kinda horsepower?</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> 563 is the official number, with 630 pound-feet of torque? Something like that, yeah.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> I wish it was, I wish it was more.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> To be honest with you, I was thinking the same thing. Maybe you could complain a little bit about the horsepower, and I, like you, I might say this is not quite as much I'd like to get out of it, you know.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> Right, right.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> But I like having all that torque.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> Right, no, the torque's great.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> I'm not gonna complain about the torque because you do want to have that sense that the thing could just keep going and going and going and going and never strain and you've always got some torque that you could go grab and have it do its thing. Now, I'm enjoying my time behind the wheel, as I always do in a Rolls-Royce, because I like the thin steering wheel.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> You do?</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> I do. I love the steering wheel.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> I thought it would be, like, bolsters there. That doesn't seem right to me.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> I totally dig the thin steering wheel, and I always feel like... although, yeah, you're right, you're very... it's not like, you know, you drove over here in a pretty snazzy Corvette, which did not isolate you from the driving experience.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> No, I felt every bump. I felt every person yelling at me to tone it down. I just, everything. Every single, I felt everything. This car, I feel like, you're just... it's just doing all of the work. You're just sitting down.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> No, exactly. It's extremely relaxing, it's a meditative experience, you know, it's just... I really, really like driving Rollses for just this reason. And you can only, this driving experience is completely singular.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> Mm-hmm.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> You know, I've driven probably half a dozen Rolls-Royces, and you always, this is the feeling you always have in them.</p><p>Rich: It's so quiet.</p><p><strong> Matt:</strong> It's quiet.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> You don't hear it. Like, I haven't heard anything on the outside. Anything. I barely hear cars driving by.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> Yeah. [Matt laughing]</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> I've gotta, you know, I do want to figure out one thing. What packages do they have available? 'Cause, what's the retail on this thing? Was it $410,000, they said?</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> This is $410,000. This vehicle, the way we're testing it, is $410,000. So, it's $325,000 to start.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> All right. So let's see what other options. So, the paint is an $11,500 option.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> Yeah, and I was a little disappointed with the paint, actually.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> I didn't, I didn't think that was great, so, like, me being the cheap person that I am, I could save money right there.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> [laughing] There you go.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> Like, instead of saying, "Paint: gunmetal," I would say "Paint, yes." [laughing]</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> You know? So, let's see. Oh, one of my favorite features of this car, by the way, it's the lamb's wool floor mats.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> Yeah, nice.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> Those were $1,500.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> Yeah, yeah, worth every penny.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> I think that's a must-have, so let's see. So, there's contoured... ooh, let's see, what, contrast seat piping? $4,000. So, I think if you want to get the orange stitching on the seats,</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> That's four grand? Rich: that's four grand. Are those, is that hand-stitched? Is this car handmade?</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> Yeah, probably is hand-stitched actually.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> And then there's the technical bespoke clock, which is, that's, I don't think that's worth $6,800.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> $6,800 for a clock?!</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> Yeah, I don't think so. I mean, I have a nice watch I could probably just use for that. I mean, you can buy a nice watch for less than that. You know?</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> That's right, that's right.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> Cheap guy. Let's see, what else is there? The rear theater configuration? I think that's, like, the TVs in the back, for $8,000. I'm not sure I would do that. These are a lot of things I'd probably just...</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> What about the picnic benches back there? The fold-down picnic benches?</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> How much were those? The fold-down picnic benches, I think were, those were $4,000. So if you want, like, little benches at the back of your seat where your rear-seat occupants could kinda just have a picnic back there, that'll cost you up to $4,000.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> Have a little prime rib.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> Yeah, exactly. But then your car will smell like food. You don't want that.</p><p>[Matt laughs]</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> You don't want the car smelling like food, no way. I'll tell you one thing. Out of any Rolls-Royce I've seen so far, I think this would be the one I would probably purchase.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> Really? Rich: Yeah, I'm not a Phantom guy.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> Not a Phantom guy?</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> I can't drive a Phantom.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> I would get a Phantom. I mean, I think the more time we spend in here, and we haven't been spending, you know, hours and hours or days and days in the car, we'd find some...</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> We'll start picking it apart.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> We would. We would find some additional things to complain about. I'd find more things outside the car to complain about. Like, there's some chrome that's slapped on out there.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> Right, yeah, I'd wanna see it without that.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> Seems like it's a little plasticky and a little cheap. There's some plastic stuff on the front, on the fascia, that's, I think, a bad choice. Yeah, what do you think of the overall design?</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> Great design. I think it's a phenomenal design. I think the rear end is very simple. And there's no Cullinan badge on it, which I like.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> That's nice, right.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> It's like, you get it, it's a Rolls-Royce, you don't have to rub it in my face, it's a Cullinan. Like, I respect that. One thing I don't like about the front end is that I wish the grill, I wish the front end didn't remind me of a Ghost. Matt: Uh-huh. Rich: It's not as, you know, it's not as, like, you know, present as the Phantom, obviously. It's very Ghost-like. It's not a bad thing. But you can tell that it's, you know, they kinda copied some cues from there, which I guess is fine, but I wish it was a little bit different from the SUV, that's all.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> Interesting, interesting. I'm a little, it has 22s on it, and I think it could go bigger.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> I agree.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> I think the wheel wells could be filled up with a bigger wheel, and if I were gonna order it, you know, above and beyond a $325,000, I would definitely want bigger wheels.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> But, no, this is definitely something different. They've done a great job making a statement, but also it's very simple on the outside. The taillights, the rear end of the vehicle.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> That's a good point.</p><p>Rich: It's very simple. It's very sedated, but still the presence is very big. I think this is one of the best-looking SUVs available right now, but there is a Range Rover that is pretty good-looking as well.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> All right, Rich, $410,000 Rolls-Royce Cullinan, hyper-luxury SUV, what do you think? Is it worth it?</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> I'm gonna go ahead and say no, this is not worth the $410,000. I would say it's worth the base price of $325,000. $410,000, no way.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> For me, it's not a $410,000 car on the outside. It is a $410,000 car on the inside. And when I'm in that car, I feel like I'm in the lap of luxury. It's uber-luxury, hyper-luxury. It's very much the Rolls-Royce experience in there. Got nothing to complain about. It's extremely quiet, and yet, this big V-12 motor, you know you've got that. Serves up the goods if you need it, but you're not hearing it roaring away or anything like that. That's really just very Rolls-Royce for me. But not $410,000 on the outside. Definitely $410,000 on the inside.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> More like a $350,000 on the outside.</p><p><strong>Matt:</strong> Yeah, $350,000 on the outside.</p><p><strong>Rich:</strong> All right, I'd have to agree.</p>

The new ultra-luxurious version of the company's flagship S-Class will be the most expensive sedan in the world when it hits showrooms next year, </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"></span><a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-06-25/mercedes-upstages-rolls-royce-with-1-million-s-class.html" target="_blank">reports Bloomberg</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In addition to the traditional lineup of premium hides, woodgrain accents, and plush carpeting, the S-Class Pullman will also feature a litany of must-have features for world's elite buyers including lounge-style seating and armor plating. At 21 feet long, the S-Class Pullman is nearly a foot and a half longer than the extended wheelbase Rolls-Royce Phantom and twice the cost as well. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Mercedes has yet to announce the powertrain options for its newest sedan, though it is expected that boast a lineup of the company's finest supercharged or naturally aspirated V8 and V12 powerplants. Since the S-Class Pullman will effectively cost nearly twice as much as the nearest comparable Rolls or Bentley, we expect the mad scientists from Stuttgart to include the best of their techno goody bag. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Mercedes had made plans to build an ultra-premium sedan as far back as the mid-'90s. Those plans were hastened when the company's German rivals, BMW and Volkswagen-Audi, gained control of Rolls-Royce and Bentley, spurring Mercedes to get its Maybach brand up and running. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Instead of designing and building a new car from scratch, <a href="http://blog.caranddriver.com/daimler-finally-killing-maybach-here%E2%80%99s-an-early-post-mortem/" target="_blank">the company based the car that would become Maybach on the venerable W140 S-Class Mercedes that debuted in 1991</a>.
