"And so I'm aligned with Elon on this, even at the risk of having the California Coastal Commission retaliate against us."Cantrell told BI he, unlike Musk, maintains political neutrality. Phantom uses smaller vehicles than SpaceX, which accounts for a smaller environmental impact, he said."I very, very succinctly refuse to endorse politicians," Cantrell said. "You're either going to piss off half the world and make the other half happy or piss off nobody. So I try to stay neutral."The California Coastal Commission declined to comment for this story.SpaceX's lawsuit against the commission alleges the group, which regulates the use of land and water in California's coastal zone, "has engaged in naked political discrimination" in violation of the First and 14th Amendments.The space rocket company says in the lawsuit that the commission was trying to "unlawfully regulate space launch programs" at Vandenberg military base.A Vandenberg base declined to comment on the ongoing litigation and said the base is working with state and federal agencies to "ensure safe and effective launch operations conducted under the existing 36-launch agreement."Legal experts told BI Musk's complaint could be successful if the billionaire CEO can prove bias."If the facts are as alleged, and if Musk can prove that the decision would have been different had his politics been different or had he been apolitical, then the First Amendment arguments should likely prevail," Eugene Volokh, a First Amendment scholar, told BI.Musk "has to show that his politics were a substantial factor" in the commission's decision, said Volokh, a professor of law at UCLA and senior fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University."Then, if he does that, the commission would have to prove that it would have reached the same result regardless of his politics," Volokh said.David Driesen, a law professor at Syracuse University, told BI, "Politicians have a First Amendment right to criticize Musk, so accusing him of spreading falsehoods is protected political speech.""On the other hand," Driesen said, "if Musk could show that the decision to deny his application was punishment for his falsehoods, that might make out a First Amendment violation."Driesen pointed out that SpaceX's lawsuit emphasizes an administrative law claim that federal law prohibits the commission from interfering in the company's launch plan."Maybe his lawyers understand that the First Amendment claim is a long shot and want to gin up something else," Driesen said.SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Skyroot Aerospace's rocket Vikram-S with three small satellites is scheduled for launch on November 18 at 11.30 a.m. "Launch is likely on 18th as the weather is predicted to be ideal. Due to inclement weather, we got an updated launch window of November 15-19, 2022," Chandana said. According to him, the Vikram-S rocket is a scaled down version of Vikram-1 rocket. The former is a single stage rocket whereas the latter is a multi-stage vehicle. "Almost all our systems flying in Vikram-S were designed in-house, except for few sensors which were imported," Chandana said. The rocket will be powered by a single stage to help test and validate the majority of the technologies in the <keyword id="1091" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vikram" source="Orion">Vikram</keyword> series of rockets. The company plans to have three rocket variants: Vikram I - payload or carrying capacity 480 kg to 500 km low inclination orbit (LIO); 290 kg to 500 km sun synchronous and polar orbit (SSPO); Vikram II - 595 kg to 500 km LIO, 400 kg to 500 km SSPO and Vikram III - 815 kg to 500 km LIO, 560 kg to 500 km SSPO. ISRO's rocket launch and tracking fee is nominal: Skyroot Aerospace

The Hyderabad-based space startup also aims to slash the costs of space travel in the future. "..now that we have done the first private rocket launch, Vikram-S, our next plan is to launch Vikram-1 which is a much bigger rocket putting satellites into orbit. That we want to do within a year from now," Pawan Chandana, co-founder of <keyword id="9750118" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="skyroot" source="Orion">Skyroot</keyword>, told PTI here Monday evening. Skyroot also wants to become one of the first few companies in the world that can place satellites into orbit. He said the firm has raised about USD 68 million, which is the largest in the aerospace startup ecosystem in India. "Of course, it took close to four years to raise this kind of capital. Now, we are good for the first few launches to orbit and then, of course, it has been very challenging because first time somebody went to the market and raised such large capital," Chandana said. Skyroot would keep on raising more capital in its journey forward and would like to generate a good amount of revenue as it starts launching next year, he said. Noting that space travel is expensive now, he said his firm aims to slash costs, make it affordable and increase reliability. "Today, the biggest problem is that space travel is very costly. Because, rockets, the only way to go to space are very unreliable. Sometimes, they don't work and are also very expensive. They fall into the sea and then you are building something, throwing it away. It's very costly," he said. Skyroot Aerospace plans to launch another rocket Vikram-1, in one year

The billionaire gave YouTuber Tim Dodd, known by his channel moniker "Everyday Astronaut," a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsuqSn7ifpU">tour</a> of the rocket's production facility in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Standing at over 320 feet tall, New Glenn is one of the largest rockets ever built, according to Blue Origin's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.blueorigin.com/new-glenn">website</a>. Only three other rockets have been built taller: <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starship-flight-four-ocean-splashdown-elon-musk-plans-2024-6">SpaceX's Starship</a>, Saturn V, and the Russian N-1, which never successfully launched. "The scale of things in person is always surprising," Bezos said. "The first time you see a flight article or development article, it's always surprising." The factory tour was also an opportunity for Bezos to show off his nerdy side. The Amazon cofounder talked excitedly about the intricacies of the technology powering New Glenn. The rocket, which is set to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/blue-origin-new-shepard-delay-explainer-2024-5">fly for the first time later this year</a>, is a partially reusable heavy-lift launch vehicle designed to lift 45 metric tons to low-Earth orbit. By comparison, <keyword id="19905255" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SpaceX" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="SpaceX" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="SpaceX">SpaceX</keyword>'s Falcon Heavy can lift <a href="https://www.spacex.com/vehicles/falcon-heavy/" target="_blank">nearly 64 metric tons</a> to orbit and is also partially reusable, and the company says Starship will be able to carry <a href="https://www.spacex.com/vehicles/starship/" target="_blank">150 metric tons</a> and is designed to be "a fully reusable transportation system." Bezos showed off New Glenn's Stage One, which is powered by seven BE-4 engines — powerful liquid oxygen and liquefied natural gas-fueled combustion engines. He also explained the welding process of the tanks. "This is a very high-performance way to build the tank," he said. "And especially because it's a reusable vehicle, you get to reuse all that high-performance." New Glenn is a two-stage rocket — following its launch, Stage One will separate from the Second Stage and autonomously descend back into a landing platform to be reused. Two BE-3U engines will then propel the Second Stage into space to deliver its payload. Bezos said the vehicle is designed to be turned around in 16 days and last for a minimum of 25 missions. "I'm hoping it will eventually be much more," Bezos said. "We'd like to get to at least a hundred." Bezos also talked about his past salvage mission in the Atlantic to recover Project Apollo's Saturn V engines, which powered the Apollo 11 to the moon. "I was sitting in my living room one day and I said, 'You know, I wonder if you could find those F1 engines from Apollo 11 sitting on the bottom of the Atlantic somewhere,'" Bezos said. "And I went to Google and I typed in Apollo 11 booster impact coordinates. And they popped up." "And so I thought, this is gonna be the easiest thing I've ever done, I'm gonna go recover those engines. Of course, that was the only part of it that was easy. It turned out to be incredibly hard." And reusability leads to affordability, which is Bezo's main goal. He said that although manufacturing techniques have been massively improved, most major aspects of rocketry were invented in the 1960s. "They haven't really changed, so our job today is not to do better than they did at spaceflight. It's to make it more affordable," he said. Bezos explained the company developed a reusable thermal protection system that doesn't need to be touched up, another aspect of the rocket's operable reusability. Viewers were also able to see the rocket's hydrogen-powered Upper Stage and its Aft Section, where the seven BE-4 engines are mounted in the base. Bezos additionally took Dodd to its forward section, which has four fins that are the "largest hydraulic actuators on a space aero surface" ever. "A good aerospace hardware does look like art because you're just going for function," Bezos said. "But there's something when you go for that last 1% of function, it really makes things beautiful." Bezos wasn't the first billionaire that YouTuber Tim Dodd landed a factory tour with — he's also <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-spacex-starfactory-tour-2024-6">interviewed Elon Musk</a> multiple times, recently touring SpaceX's new "Starfactory" where its Starship rocket is made. India on Friday successfully placed three satellites into orbit on a rocket completely developed by a four-year-old startup, marking the entry of the private sector into space activities, currently dominated by the state-run behemoth ISRO. <keyword id="7537495" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="skyroot-aerospace" source="Orion">Skyroot Aerospace</keyword>-designed Vikram-S, named in a befitting tribute to the father of the country's space programme <keyword id="29151" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vikram-sarabhai" source="Orion">Vikram Sarabhai</keyword>, tasted success in its maiden mission. Skyroot Aerospace become the first privately held company in India after the space sector was opened for private players by the Centre in 2020. "I am happy to announce the successful completion of Mission Prarambh, The Beginning, by Skyroot aerospace," a smiling Pawan Goenka, Chairman of the country's space regulator, Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (INSPACe), said from ISRO's Mission Control Center here. The rocket achieved an altitude of 89.5 km and a range of 121.2 km, "exactly what was planned by Skyroot Aerospace," he said. The rocket "worked as planned" and Skyroot Aerospace has demonstrated various capabilities of sub-systems that will go into the orbital launch vehicle, he added. The rocket integrated into the launcher soared after lifting off at the prefixed 11.30 am from the sounding rocket complex at the Indian Space Research Organisation's Satish Dhawan Space Centre, here, about 115 km from Chennai. The Mission unveiled by ISRO Chairman S Somanath has three payloads with two belonging to domestic customers and one from a foreign client. The 6-metre tall launch vehicle is one of the world's first few all-composite rockets that has 3-D printed solid thrusters for spin stability of the launch vehicle. "This is a new beginning for the Indian private sector entering aerospace and a historic moment for all of us," Goenka said. The three payloads riding piggyback on the rocket are from Chennai-based start-up SpaceKidz, Andhra Pradesh-based N-SpaceTech and Armenian BazoomQ Space Research Lab. Vikram-S launched the payloads in about 500 km low inclination orbit. In a departure from the routine, Friday's mission was launched from the complex where sounding rockets were used by ISRO. The Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in <keyword id="6355143" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sriharikota" source="Orion">Sriharikota</keyword> has two launch complexes, each capable of providing complete support for vehicle assembly, check out and launch operations for any kind of missions -- Low Earth Orbit, Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit. Friday's mission is considered to be a significant milestone for Skyroot Aerospace as it would help test and validate the majority of the technologies in the <keyword id="1091" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="vikram" source="Orion">Vikram</keyword> series of orbital class space launch vehicles, including many sub-systems and technologies that would be tested before lift-off and post-lift off phases of the launch. 'Fun-Sat', a 2.5 kgs payload belonging to Chennai-based aerospace startup Spacekidz, has been developed by students from India, the United States, Singapore and Indonesia. The 545 kg Vikram launch vehicle consists of the Vikram II and Vikram III series. The technology architecture of the launch vehicle offers unique capabilities like multi-orbit insertion and interplanetary missions while providing customised, dedicated and ride-share options covering a wide spectrum of small satellite customer needs, Skyroot Aerospace said. The company added the rockets can be assembled and launched within 24 hours from any launch site. Among the US companies most represented were SpaceX, Blue Origin, Lockheed Martin, and Tesla, the spokesperson said.Maximin told CNBC that his LinkedIn post garnered some 200 messages and helped him increase his connections on the site by a third.He added that he didn't intend his invitation to be a slam against SpaceX, which he called "one of the best engineering companies in the world." The present capital infusion builds upon the company's previous raise in 2022, bringing its total funding to USD 95 million, which is the largest ever for an Indian Space-tech startup. Skyroot plans to utilize the newly acquired capital to drive its next phase of growth through increased investments in infrastructure, reinforcement of its technology leadership, attraction of top-tier talent, and the enhancement of its launch frequency and capabilities, all while maintaining a lean and agile core team, the Hyderabad-headquartered company said in a statement. Founded in 2018 by space scientists-turned-space entrepreneurs, <keyword id="6364836" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pawan-kumar" source="Orion">Pawan Kumar</keyword> Chandana and <keyword id="7537906" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="naga-bharath-daka" source="Orion">Naga Bharath Daka</keyword>, Skyroot is the country's leading private space launch vehicle company. This requires the FAA to consult with other agencies," said Kulm.The regulator is racing to keep up with SpaceX's rapid launch pace, with executive Daniel Murray telling an aerospace summit on Wednesday that 80% of overtime logged by the FAA's space division concerns SpaceX, in comments <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-09-11/spacex-accounts-for-80-of-faa-s-space-workers-overtime?srnd=phx-industries">reported by Bloomberg</a>.SpaceX said the licensing process for the Starship launch had been "repeatedly derailed" by issues "ranging from the frivolous to the patently absurd."In recent months, the rocket company has faced scrutiny over its impact on the environment. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/08/12/spacex-repeatedly-polluted-waters-in-texas-tceq-epa-found.html">CNBC reported</a> in August that regulators in Texas had found that SpaceX had repeatedly released pollutants into nearby bodies of water.SpaceX denied this was the case in its blog post on Tuesday.The company did not respond to a request for comment, sent outside normal working hours.

The day is not far when <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> will see its own mega private aerospace company like Elon Musk-owns SpaceX or <keyword id="12232315" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jeff-bezos-run" source="Orion">Jeff Bezos-run</keyword> Blue Origin, taking travellers to the edge of space and beyond, <keyword id="12180756" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="srinath-ravichandran" source="Orion">Srinath Ravichandran</keyword>, co-founder and CEO of rocket startup AgniKul Cosmos, has envisioned. In a chat with IANS, Ravichandran who is ecstatic after Agnikul Cosmos was granted access to the Indian Space Research Organisation (<keyword id="6358064" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro" source="Orion">ISRO</keyword>) facilities and expertise for the development and testing of systems and subsystems of its rockets, said that the pact with ISRO will allow them to ultilise its facilities to test out various sub-systems of their launch vehicle. "This will, in turn, help us with reduced capital expenditure and expedited testing," he said. "India can have its own SpaceX or Blue Origin kind of mega private space firm in the near future. There is so much support from the government and investors are open to invest too in the homegrown spacetech startups," Ravichandran added. The next step, he added, will be to aim multiple launches per year and scale to the extent of having a launch once in two-three weeks. "Beyond that would be about making the vehicles more efficient, thereby providing even cheaper access to customers. We are doing this through a mix of innovations on various technologies in the vehicle," Ravichandran informed. Last month, Chennai-based Agnikul Cosmos received the nod by the Department of Space to carry out multiple tests and qualify its single piece 3D-printed semi-cryogenic engine and other systems of its rocket at various ISRO centres. This is the second pact that the Department of Space has signed with a rocket maker, after the first with Hyderabad-based <keyword id="7537495" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="skyroot-aerospace" source="Orion">Skyroot Aerospace</keyword> on September 11. According to Ravichandran, their rocket engines are 100 per cent 3D-printed, that too in a single shot. "This allows us to directly assemble what comes out of the 3D printer in our launch vehicle. The big advantage of this is the ability to provide and enable rapid launch access and, at the same time, make customisable launch vehicles," elaborated Ravichandran. He formed the startup with Moin SPM within IIT-Madras with a seed funding of Rs 3 crore, with an aim to develop and launch its first rocket in 2021 and subsequently develop ability to provide launch service for satellites. The current investors in the spacetech startup are Mayfield India, PI Ventures, Speciale Invest, Beenext, Artha and others. In June, India decided to allow private companies to establish and operate rocket launch sites within and outside the country, subject to prior authorisation from the government. Similarly, any rocket launch (orbital or sub-orbital) from Indian or overseas territory can be carried out only with authorisation from Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Center (IN-SPACe), an independent body constituted by the Government of India, under the Department of Space (DOS). The launch could be from own or leased launch site and also from mobile platforms (land, sea or air) as per the Draft National Space Transportation Policy-2020 brought out by the Department of Space. "Now that we also have to plan the entire engine building facility in-house, we are confident that we can control engine making end-to-end in India, thereby not only enabling 'make in India' but also 'design in India'," Ravichandran told IANS. He said that anyone who wants to do a space tech startup should do it today. "Right now is the best time to do a spacetech startup in India. The government has been very forthcoming in terms of the help provided to enable private missions and now would be a good time to get started to get things done," Ravichandran noted.
