<ul class="summary-list"><li>"Real Housewives of Potomac" star Wendy Osefo called out costar Robyn Dixon's lack of transparency.</li><li>In January, after season seven was wrapped, Dixon addressed rumors her husband Juan cheated on her.</li></ul><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/mia-thornton-throwing-drink-wendy-osefo-charrisse-jackson-jordan-2022-11">"Real Housewives of Potomac"</a> star Robyn Dixon caused a stir earlier this year when she revealed that she was indeed aware of rumors that her husband Juan was inappropriate with another woman before season seven had even filmed — and now she's facing criticism <a href="https://www.insider.com/real-housewives-potomac-wendy-osefo-disciplinary-action-mia-thornton-drink-2023-3">from costar Wendy Osefo, among many others.</a></p><p>Dixon made the revelation on <a href="https://people.com/tv/robyn-dixon-admits-idiot-husband-juan-dixon-dms-with-another-woman-stalled-wedding/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">her podcast with costar Gizelle Bryant</a>, "Reasonably Shady," in a January 30 episode, only after shooting had wrapped on season seven of Bravo's hit reality show, "Potomac," and its three-part reunion.</p><p>The timing of Dixon's admission led to questions about why she didn't address the rumors during the season, even when costar Karen Huger surfaced rumors that Juan cheated during a cast trip to Mexico. After all, Dixon <em>is</em> on a reality television show, as executive producer Andy Cohen <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3bHY0ir2TA" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pointed out to her on "Watch What Happens Live"</a> when he grilled her about hiding the indiscretion in a February 5 episode of the late-night series. </p><p>Speaking to Insider on Thursday, Osefo had some choice words, too, asking Dixon: "Why are you on the show?"</p><p>"The whole point of this show is for us to live our real lives in front of the camera, and when you see a cast member who willingly withholds information, they're not living their real life," the Johns Hopkins University assistant professor said.</p><p>"Do I expect her to stand on top of a mountain and scream out that her fiancé cheated on her? No. But if this is your real life, then you would have a conversation with people on this cast that you're friends with, and you would tell them why you are depressed, and let them know that you're depressed because your fiancé cheated on you," Osefo continued.</p><p>On the "Reasonably Shady" podcast, which aired back in January, Dixon said that Juan had communicated with another woman through Instagram DMs during the COVID-19 pandemic, but said they "did not date."</p><p>"Juan was an idiot," Dixon said. "He's bored. He needs attention. It's the pandemic, blah, blah, blah."</p><p>Dixon said she was "aware of the situation before we filmed season seven," and it "was handled" privately between her and Juan, with whom she was engaged at the time. (The <a href="https://people.com/tv/rhop-robyn-dixon-and-juan-dixon-second-wedding-photos/">couple remarried in August last year.</a> They first married in 2005 and divorced in 2012.)</p><p>Last month on "Watch What Happens Live," Cohen, who's also an executive producer of "RHOP," grilled Dixon about why she had stayed quiet about the rumors herself, even as other husbands were accused of inappropriate behavior this past season.</p><p>"It was so in the back of my mind. We dealt with it. We moved on from it. It wasn't an issue at that moment while we were filming," Dixon said.</p><p>Dixon also claimed on the late-night talk show that there are other "Potomac" stars who hold back parts of <em>their</em> lives from the cameras.</p><p>Osefo, however, isn't buying it and called the statement "a form of deflection." </p><p>"This season I was rushed to the emergency room. I didn't have to record my emergency room stay — my husband did that. I showed you guys my hair loss and how I'm balding. I didn't have to share that with you. I could have worn my wigs and you guys would have been none the wiser," the mother of three told Insider. </p><p>"I have brought my authentic self to this show — the ups, the downs, the ins, the outs. So, I think that instead of deflecting, and looking at other castmates and pointing fingers, she should look inward on why she has been living a lie."</p><p>Insider reached out to representatives for Dixon but didn't immediately hear back. </p><p>Although Dixon didn't share her recent relationship troubles with her fellow "Housewives," she will be spilling more details in an extended interview with Cohen during part three of the "Potomac" reunion Sunday on Bravo.</p>

It comes days after the reality star confirmed that she and Jamal are no longer rekindling their relationship. </p><p>"I didn't have a prenup," she revealed on <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/breakup-or-make-up/id1558738069?i=1000523622323" target="_blank" rel="noopener">her new podcast, "Reasonably Shady."</a> "It was a fight, but like I just said, we didn't have much, we grew it altogether."</p><p>"It was a fight over money and," Bryant added, "I will never, ever do that to myself again." </p><p>It's the main reason why later on in the episode, Bryant advocated for her listeners to protect themselves before walking down the aisle.</p><p>"Ladies, don't you ever get married - I don't care if you got $5 and he has $17 - don't you ever get married without a prenup because you do not know where this relationship is going financially and finances are important and you want to protect yourself. If, and when you get a divorce, you want to protect yourself," she said.</p><h2>Gizelle Bryant also told her listeners that during her marriage she felt she was in Jamal's 'shadow'</h2><p>Bryant recently announced that she split with her ex-husband turned new boyfriend Jamal, who's a pastor of a megachurch in Atlanta. The two, who have three daughters together, were married for seven years before divorcing in 2009 due to alleged infidelity. They later rekindled their relationship last year.</p><p>During "The <keyword id="132223" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Real-Housewives">Real Housewives</keyword> of Potomac's" most recent season, Jamal appeared sparingly, which annoyed many cast members. At the season five reunion, former cast member <a href="https://www.insider.com/real-housewives-monique-samuels-real-reason-why-she-left-show-2021-1">Monique Samuels brought a binder full of supposed "receipts"</a> that detailed Jamal's alleged infidelity (which he denied) that led Samuels to dub him "Pastor Holy Whore." <ul class="summary-list"><li>"Real Housewives of Potomac" star Wendy Osefo revealed which of her cast mates she's friendly with.</li><li>The Johns Hopkins University assistant professor feuded with Mia Thornton in season seven.</li></ul><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/real-housewives-wendy-osef-robyn-dixon-juan-cheating-rumors-2023-3">"The Real Housewives of Potomac" season seven</a> reunion may be over, but there's still plenty of tension among the cast.</p><p>"Potomac" star Wendy Osefo has dished to Insider which of her fellow cast members she is friendly with after shooting the season seven reunion in New York City in January.</p><p>No surprises, Osefo said she is all good with her longtime friend on the cast, Candiace Dillard Bassett.</p><p>"My girl will always be Candiace. We talk all the time. I was just talking to her yesterday," Osefo told Insider last week.</p><p>The Johns Hopkins University assistant professor also namechecked Karen Huger and Ashley Darby as the other two housewives she's on good terms with.</p><p>"I have a great relationship with Karen. I'm so happy how far our relationship has come," said Osefo.</p><p>"And I have a great deal of respect for Ashley in the way in which she stood up for me in Mexico," Osefo added, referring to Darby coming to her defense after <a href="https://www.insider.com/real-housewives-potomac-wendy-osefo-disciplinary-action-mia-thornton-drink-2023-3">Mia Thornton threw a drink over her during a cast trip last year.</a></p><p>Of course, it wasn't all smooth sailing for Osefo and Darby this season, as some of the housewives' husbands were accused of acting inappropriately around the other women, including Osefo's husband, Eddie, and Chris Bassett, Candiace's husband.</p><div type="image" title="Real Housewives of Potomac season seven reunion" height="2000" width="2666" msid="98456451" hostid="261" sizebytes="530964"></div><p>"I told her I did not like the 'Happy Eddie' comment, as well as what she did with Chris," Osefo told Insider. "But I did appreciate the way she was there for me and supported me in Mexico."</p><p>"I'm good with them," Osefo said, before adding: "Everyone else... yeah."</p><p>The "everyone else" includes Thornton, with whom Osefo clashed in season seven, as well as Gizelle Bryant and Robyn Dixon, the latter of whom she also argued with extensively this season.</p><p>Elsewhere in our interview with Osefo, the mother of three called on Bravo and production company Truly Original to take disciplinary action against Thornton over their heated showdown in Mexico which resulted in Thornton <a href="https://www.insider.com/real-housewives-potomac-wendy-osefo-disciplinary-action-mia-thornton-drink-2023-3">throwing a cocktail over Osefo.</a></p><p>"It really did impact me in a way that I felt violated. In the reunion, you hear me say, 'You disrespected me to my deepest core,'" said Osefo. "For me, throwing a drink in someone's face — especially one you've already sipped from — is analogous to almost spitting on them. I just felt as though that was one of the highest forms of disrespect."</p><p>The mother of three continued, "I am someone who takes pride in my ability to convey my messages through the use of my words, and Mia's inability to do that, and the fact she got flustered, and she thought the best way to combat me was to physically attack me, is something I just can't stand beside. I don't think there's any excuses to that."</p>

It felt familiar but I couldn't place it right away. After some reflection, I realized the notes included a subtle blend of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/castoreum-used-in-food-and-perfume-2013-10?_ga=2.243580365.937319690.1667150584-1996747788.1647018266">vanilla,</a> warm spice, and sheer musk. I usually pick citrus scents that slap you in the face but this blend was softer. It just gives you that special jolt you get on a communion Sunday. It is a grown woman's fragrance. </p><p>La Dame is the perfect combination of "deaconess" and "Dior." It gives more "we stepping out tonight" than "hot girl summer."</p><p>The cedar and sandalwood accents in the fragrance do not spring or leap, they rise gently. The bottle, however, is beautiful and timeless. </p><h2><strong>The Bottom Line </strong></h2><p>La Dame is a great pick for special occasions.</p><p>It is elegant and I can wear it to a family event, a job interview, or to church. The reality stars recently took their grudge to the next level during a cast trip to Miami in season seven where Mia tossed a full martini glass into Wendy's face. </p><h2><strong>Wendy invited the ladies to her "Nude Interlude" party in season six, episode one. Karen Huger brought Mia as her guest and Mia offended Wendy.</strong></h2><p>Wendy threw a "nude interlude" party to introduce her newly augmented breasts which she named "happy" and "ness" to the ladies of "The Real Housewives of Potomac" in the opening episode of season six. Production emphasized Robyn's comments by showing footage of Wendy from behind in seasons five and six. Wendy repeatedly said she <a href="https://news.yahoo.com/wendy-osefo-reveals-dolores-catania-133300702.html">had some "tweaks"</a> but did not say what they were. When Mia pressed the issue by asking again, Osefo clapped back. "And what have you had done? Because it seems like you've had a lot done," she said. </p><p>"And I own it," Mia replied before running down the list of her cosmetic surgeries. </p><h2><strong>Wendy was confused when Mia didn't stick up for Karen</strong></h2><p>Later during the "nude interlude" party Karen and Gizelle Bryant got into a huge argument about Gizelle's relationship with her ex-husband and children's father Jamal Bryant. </p><p>Karen said she took issue with what she considered was Gizelle wishing death on her husband Ray Huger, 76, in season one of the series. Ray told Gizelle to find a husband before her looks began to fade and she said Ray would be "buried six feet under" before that happened. </p><p>Mia defended Gizelle when things slowed down and people were speaking more calmly at the table. Ashley also attended on her own. </p><p>The lunch was intended for the couples to have fun together but the ladies separated from their partners to chat on their own.  </p><p>Mia said she thought Gizelle had "questionable" character and was "just a pretty face" at the luncheon. She credited her change of opinion to Gizelle's "six feet under" comment regarding Ray. They initially squabbled over Wendy accusing Mia of being two-faced to Charrisse Jackson Jordan after Mia interrupted an argument between Wendy and Charrisse. </p><p>"You were just in the car saying now you understand why Karen doesn't fuck with Charrisse," said Wendy. "I'm a little bit slighted that she's coming to my restaurant in my city and didn't even holla at me," he said. </p><p>Charrisse said she was interested in working with Peter on a champagne lounge. Charrisse, an OG housewife, showed the ladies her customized champagne room in season two episode twelve. </p><p>"Are you going to blow me off like Wendy blowed me off?" Peter asked. </p><p>"I'm not Wendy," said Charrisse. She also threw a salad at Candiace in season six, episode fourteen. </p><p>Security stepped in to keep the ladies from full-on brawling. Robyn filmed the whole encounter on her phone to avoid "he said, she said bullshit" happening later. </p><p>Karen looked into Robyn's phone and declared that she was staying out of the drama because it was her 59th birthday. </p><p>Robyn accused Wendy of "baiting" Mia and "being antagonistic" and told her she should not keep going if she did not want to fight. "If you don't want to fight then stop," said Robyn. </p><p>Wendy was disappointed that she was being chastised and not Mia. Crater-faced bitch," she screamed. </p><p>The "crater-faced bitch" comment struck a chord with Mia who spun on her heels to head back towards Wendy forcing security to jump in front of her. </p><p>Mia has spoken about the insecurities she has surrounding her acne scars in the press. "It hurts because it's something that I can't necessarily do anything about," she <a href="https://pagesix.com/2022/10/05/why-rhop-star-mia-thornton-threw-a-drink-at-wendy-osefo/">told Page Six</a> in an interview published October 5. </p><p>She revealed that her foster parents didn't take her to a dermatologist in the same interview. </p><h2><strong>Wendy assured everyone her weave was safe </strong></h2><p>Ashley asked Wendy if she was okay after Mia left. "She got it on my hair but I got wet and wavy so I'm okay," yelled Wendy. </p><p>Mia returned to the table after talking with Jaqueline. "Don't let her get you like that sweetie," he told her. </p><h2><strong>Wendy said Mia embarrassed herself by assaulting her </strong></h2><p>Mia spent a good portion of season six discussing how successful she was as an owner of several chiropractic clinics. </p><p>Wendy said Mia's actions were unbecoming of a CEO after Mia threw the drink at her. "You're such a boss what boss throws drinks?" asked Wendy. </p><p>Mia, the trip hostess, asked Wendy to leave. Wendy refused and continued yelling and insulting Mia. </p><p>"You embarrassed yourself! The wet and wavy weave remained unscathed. </p><h2><strong>Mia threatened to leave the Miami trip </strong></h2><p>Mia called her husband and asked him to book her a flight home but the ladies rallied and asked her to stay. Gizelle said they were not leaving Miami without anyone named Mia. </p><h2><strong>Mia said she regretted her actions in an interview </strong></h2><p>"I do not think that anybody deserves to have a glass in their face," Mia told Page Six. "I'm not perfect. I make mistakes," she continued. </p><h2><strong>Wendy doubled down on the "crater-faced bitch" comments in an interview </strong></h2><p>"That was a fact. "I would want to be a part of something that focuses on a beautiful Black family and how we are just like everybody else. We get along. We argue, we have fun. So I'm going to be home," the reality star explained. "I'm going to be right here with the kids and, of course, Jamal will come in and spend the holidays with us."</p><p>Gizelle and Jamal, who were married from 2002 to 2009 before reuniting during this season of "The Real Housewives of Potomac," were dealt several blows to the strength of their relationship during the reunion.</p><p>Costar Monique Samuels arrived at the fifth season reunion with a binder containing "receipts" that she claimed could prove that their courtship was arranged. At one point, Samuels even recited Jamal's telephone number, which seemingly claimed that the text messages were valid, and called the pastor a "holy whore."</p><div type="image" title="Monique Samuels" height="963" width="1713" msid="79826496" hostid="261"></div><p>Gizelle casually dismissed Samuels' claims during the reunion and doubled-down on that dismissal during her chat with Insider, held just days after the reunion aired on Bravo.</p><p>"I can only worry about me and my kids and we over here living on fine street," she said. "Jamal and I are fine."</p><p>"I have been dealing with haters my entire life and this was just another day in the life of, you know, people wanting to just be mean and nasty unnecessarily," Gizelle added.</p><p>"Somebody has a lot of time to be scrapbooking," she continued about her costar. "I didn't care at all. I just felt like it was very thirsty and extremely pressed."</p><p>Although Jamal wasn't at the reunion, in the days after it aired, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCMCmN-yH0I&amp;feature=emb_titleitle" target="_blank" rel="noopener">he made his own binder, sharing in a 21-minute video</a> that the text messages were indeed real, but didn't necessarily show the full picture of his relationship with the other woman. </p><p>"If we're gonna show text messages, let's show all the text messages," Jamal said in the video posted Wednesday before reiterating that he's not married and is currently dating.</p><p>He added, "I'm not sleeping with anyone in my church. I have no babies in my church. I have no inappropriate relationship with anyone in my church."</p><p>Jamal added that he would no longer appear on "The Real Housewives of Potomac" for any reason.</p><p>While others have been questioning her relationship, Gizelle has been busy in the kitchen, spending time to perfect her quarantine baking. </p><p>"I am a baker. I love dessert," the reality star, who is part of <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CI6BBZGgq6J/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Baileys Holiday Baking Club</a>, which pairs celebrities with a professional bakers, gushed.</p><p>Gizelle is serving up a special treat to her loved ones to help them feel "warm and fuzzy" from afar this holiday season.</p><p>"I'm going to be sending them a Bailey's chocolate fig pie, and they're going to love it," she said, adding that one of those special people to receive her dessert is her costar and offscreen best friend Robyn Dixon. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/ Mark Blinch</span></p><p class="caption">Rob Ford.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Rob Ford, the embattled former mayor and city councilor from Toronto, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/former-toronto-mayor-rob-ford-dead-2016-3">died on Tuesday</a> morning at the age 46 after a protracted battle with a rare form of cancer. </p><p>Before gaining international notoriety for his <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/video-rob-ford-2014-4">crack usage</a> and often <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QB1dJeMtb08">volatile behavior</a>, Ford upended a staid political establishment and dominated the political conversation in Toronto.</p><p>His election personified the divide between the Toronto most Americans know of - a dense, progressive urban core - with suburban Toro<span style="background-color: #ffffff;">nto, the kind of diverse, blue-collar place where you'd find a mosque right next to a drive-thru Tim Hortons (the Dunkin' Donuts of Canada). </span></p><p>Ford - a conservative and bombastic populist - somehow led the largest, most diverse city in Canada for four wild years. Ford seemed similar to Donald Trump; in many ways, he was.<span style="background-color: #00ff00;"><br /></span></p><p>So how did Toronto, a city known for its left-leaning <keyword id="6358883" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Politics">politics</keyword>, elect a mayor like Rob Ford?</p><h2>The creation of a megacity </h2><p>The story starts in 1998.</p><p>The suburban area Ford lived in wasn't always part of the city of Toronto.</p><p>The five major suburban districts surrounding the city's core, including Ford's Etobicoke, were governed by their own individual city councils. </p><p>In 1998, Ontario's government amalgamated, or combined, the five suburban districts with the city's core, creating the "<a href="https://beta.thestar.com/news/2008/01/01/amalgamation_10_years_later.html">megacity</a>" of today. The suburban city governments were dissolved and folded into one large city, in a process not unlike the amalgamation of New York's five boroughs in 1898.</p><p>Anti-amalgamation groups feared their taxes would rise, and that they'd be less connected to their municipal government as it moved downtown, reports the <a href="https://beta.thestar.com/news/2008/01/01/amalgamation_10_years_later.html">Toronto Star</a>'s Royson James. </p><p>Michael Prue, the last mayor of East York (one of the suburbs), called amalgamation "a disaster," per the <a href="https://beta.thestar.com/news/2008/01/01/amalgamation_10_years_later.html">Star</a>. And not everyone in the old core of Toronto liked it either.</p><p><span>"It's been a real body blow to the city," John Sewell, a former mayor of Toronto told the Toronto Star. "<span>I fear for the city's future."</span></span></p><p><span><span>And in some ways, Sewell's fear was prescient: Just two years later, Ford was elected mayor. </span></span></p><p><span><span>People in the suburbs resented that their tax dollars went to things like bike lanes and public transportation for the downtown core post-amalgamation. Ford harnessed that anger expertly. </span></span></p><p>It was the lingering resentment over amalgamation that led to Ford's rise.<span style="background-color: #ffff00;"> </span></p><h2>The Canadian Kennedys </h2><p>Ford was born in Etobicoke, Ontario in 1969. His late father, Doug Ford Sr., established a label-making business, <a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/toronto/assessing-the-financial-affairs-of-average-guy-mayor-rob-ford/article15574327/">Deco</a>. </p><p>Ford liked to tout how he was just an "<a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/toronto/assessing-the-financial-affairs-of-average-guy-mayor-rob-ford/article15574327/">average guy</a>," but a Globe and Mail investigation into his background revealed otherwise.</p><p>When Doug Sr., died, he left his children a sizeable inheritance. The Globe found the Ford family's real estate holdings to be worth upwards of <a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/toronto/assessing-the-financial-affairs-of-average-guy-mayor-rob-ford/article15574327/">$10 million</a>. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Aaron Harris</span></p><p class="caption">Toronto's Chief Budget Officer Councillor Frank Di Giorgio (L) shares a moment with Toronto Mayor Rob Ford during a budget meeting at City Hall in Toronto, January 30, 2014.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Doug Sr. represented Etobicoke (pronounced EE-tow-buh-coe) as a member of Ontario's parliament during the late 1990s, and he had huge ambitions for his family. </p><p>The Fords began referring to themselves as the "<a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=tlC4AQAAQBAJ&amp;pg=PT56&amp;lpg=PT56&amp;dq=the+gatekeepers+of+etobicoke+john+tory&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=7U_H6wHYyN&amp;sig=z-MxzyujO49ko2y-mdhlhuV7-do&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjphd-KitXLAhVBMSYKHV9zBe8Q6AEINDAD#v=onepage&amp;q=canadian%20kennedys&amp;f=false">Canadian Kennedys</a>," (albeit much to the Kennedy's right on the political spectrum), according to Robyn Doolittle, a journalist who wrote "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Crazy-Town-The-Ford-Story/dp/067006811X">Crazy Town: The Rob Ford Story</a>," chronicling the rise and fall of the Fords. </p><p>When John Tory, the current mayor of Toronto, was exploring a bid for the office in 2003, his advisers told him the Ford family were the "gatekeepers of Etobicoke," and that he would have to win their favor in order to gain the much-needed suburban vote, according to <a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=tlC4AQAAQBAJ&amp;pg=PT56&amp;lpg=PT56&amp;dq=the+gatekeepers+of+etobicoke+john+tory&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=7U_H6wHYyN&amp;sig=z-MxzyujO49ko2y-mdhlhuV7-do&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjphd-KitXLAhVBMSYKHV9zBe8Q6AEINDAD#v=onepage&amp;q=the%20gatekeepers%20of%20etobicoke%20john%20tory&amp;f=false">Doolittle</a>. </p><p>After Doug Sr. died in 2006, his sons - Rob, Doug Jr., and Randy - took over control of Deco, and launched their own political careers. </p><h2>'Ford Nation'</h2><p>The former mayor of Toronto before Ford, David Miller, was decidedly representative of the city's core, or the "<a href="https://newrepublic.com/article/131886/rob-ford-died-make-amends">downtown elites</a>," as Ford liked to call them. </p><p>Miller was educated at Harvard, supported bold public <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transit_City">transit expansion plans</a> (some of which Ford later <a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/toronto/it-was-alive-it-was-dead-and-now-transit-city-is-back-to-life-maybe/article4103267/">killed</a>), and was as latte-sipping, bike-riding, and supportive of the environment as progressives come. His agenda brewed resentment in areas far from Toronto's core that felt left behind.</p><p>It's important to note that Toronto's suburbs are <a href="http://neoformix.com/Projects/DotMaps/TorontoVisMin.html">extremely diverse</a>. Many immigrants, from places like Somalia, Bangladesh, and the West Indies, call the suburbs home. Couple them with the mostly white voters who live in detached, post-war homes more commonly associated with suburbia, and you get a good sense of "<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/23/world/americas/rob-ford-dies.html">Ford Nation</a>," Ford's voting base.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Mark Blinch</span></p><p class="caption">Toronto's financial district.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Residents of Ford Nation - whatever their ethnicities - saw their hard-earned tax dollars funneled into projects, like bike infrastructure and light rail lines, that they saw as not for them. Unlike Donald Trump, Ford's politics of resentment wasn't just for whites.</p><h2>'Gravy Train'</h2><p>Though Ford never finished college, he was a master campaigner. And he was an expert at connecting with average voters. </p><p>He was the guy people felt they "could have a beer with," as Josh Barro (who's now at Business Insider) wrote for <a href="http://www.bloombergview.com/articles/2013-05-17/the-almost-good-reasons-toronto-elected-rob-ford">Bloomberg View</a> in 2013. </p><p>After he was elected to city council in 2000, representing Etobicoke's Ward 2 (a ward that contains both Ford's own old-money neighborhood and the infamous <a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/toronto/project-traveller-and-the-dixon-city-bloods/article18737689/?page=all">Dixon Towers</a> housing project) he fought against what he saw as a profligate city government. He answered his phones personally, and he showed up at constituents' doors to help out with small neighborhood issues, writes the <a href="https://beta.thestar.com/news/gta/2016/03/22/why-rob-ford-appealed-to-so-many-in-toronto-james.html">Toronto Star</a>'s Royson James. </p><p>After three terms on city council, Ford set his sights on the city's highest office - the office formerly occupied by the Harvard-educated Miller.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Mark Blinch</span></p><p class="caption">Ford in the Mayor's chair in city council</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>During a contentious election battle, Ford defeated George Smitherman, a former Federal MP for Toronto Centre (you can see the pattern). Ford vowed to stop what he called "<a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/the-logic-behind-rob-fords-bid-to-derail-the-gravy-train/article4330594/">the gravy train</a>" at City Hall on the campaign trail.</p><p>After he won, Ford immediately got to work slashing taxes. His base was thrilled. </p><p>Quickly, Ford's personal problems came to light. He partied in his office, allegedly had <a href="https://beta.thestar.com/news/city_hall/toronto2014election/2014/03/27/live_ryerson_hosts_mayoral_debate.html">ties to dangerous gangs</a>, and his <a href="http://news.nationalpost.com/toronto/rob-ford-launches-legal-action-over-prostitution-and-crack-claims-in-profane-media-scrum">behavior</a> in front of the media was bizarre to say the least. And while some Torontonians were horrified, his base stuck by him.</p><p>Ford's erratic behavior culminated in the infamous crack-cocaine video.</p><p>In May 2013, Gawker's John Cook <a href="http://gawker.com/for-sale-a-video-of-toronto-mayor-rob-ford-smoking-cra-507736569">reported</a> on a video of Ford smoking crack-cocaine in his basement with alleged drug dealers. The resulting media hysteria made Ford a household name beyond Toronto.</p><p>And in November of the same year, after he publicly admitted to smoking crack, city council voted to <a href="http://globalnews.ca/news/976731/city-begins-transfer-of-mayors-power-staff-from-rob-ford-to-norm-kelly/">transfer</a> his powers, including control over the city's budget to <a href="https://twitter.com/norm?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor">Norm Kelly</a>, the deputy mayor. </p><p>Ford was <a href="http://bigstory.ap.org/article/4a1dfb5b08e94103ad6afc5a5da18dc4/former-toronto-mayor-rob-ford-dies-after-fighting-cancer">diagnosed with cancer</a> two months shy of the election date during a contentious re-election battle. He bowed out of the race, and his elder brother, Doug stepped in to replace him. </p><p>The elder Ford eventually lost re-election to John Tory, Toronto's incumbent mayor. It was a somewhat close election, though: Ford only lost by <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2014/10/27/toronto-election-results-2014-john-tory-doug-ford_n_6057022.html">seven points</a>. </p><p>Rob is survived by his wife, Renata, brother Doug, and two children. </p>
