It's part of the reason <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-blames-hybrids-for-lower-sales-2024-4">hybrids</a> have been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/toyota-hybrid-cars-ev-sales-growth-prius-bz4x-2024-2">having a moment</a>, as an intermediate step from gas-powered cars to fully electric vehicles.It's possible that there are a bunch more buyers out there who would love to buy a Tesla but just can't afford one. How big is that group of buyers? It's not clear."These new vehicles still bring a lot of new, unanswered questions, and TSLA didn't really address, leaving us to believe much is still in flux," UBS said in a note following the earnings release."What are they really, and what buyer are they targeting other than 'lower cost'? The resale data for used EVs is sparse, and the longevity of batteries is scattershot as technology improves.<h2>Infrastructure challenges remain</h2>EVs also require entirely different infrastructure from gas-powered vehicles, and anxiety over battery range and charging stations continues to be a real issue for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-owners-share-unexpected-headaches-owning-ev-electric-car-2023-7">EV owners</a>.The number of charging stations in the US has grown gradually over the years, but operators have <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-car-charging-reliability-broken-stations-ev-2022-5">struggled with maintenance and uptime issues</a> — and some lack the amenities like snacks and bathrooms you'd find at gas stations. It's also worth noting that a full charge for a Tesla, which has nearly 7,000 US charging stations, could take up to 30 minutes.Maybe infrastructure isn't a core concern for the archetypal early Tesla buyer: someone who might be a tech employee in California with plugins in their garage or driveway — and also at their office. And that's, of course, only if they own their own parking space. Installation might be trickier for people living in apartment complexes, urban townhouses, or myriad other housing situations.<h2>Musk and Tesla are politicized</h2>As Tesla looks to lure potential new buyers with a cheaper car, it will have to contend with souring consumer sentiment toward the EV maker.The number of US consumers who say they would consider buying a Tesla fell to 31% in February — down from 70% in November 2021 — according to research recently <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/would-be-tesla-buyers-snub-company-musks-reputation-dips-2024-04-01/">published</a> by Reuters. It could make Tesla more attractive in markets like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-would-spur-growth-in-india-ev-market-rival-says-2024-4">India</a>. Maybe the pool of buyers for a cheap Tesla will be ginormous. Betting against Elon Musk has been a losing proposition over time.But it's worth considering what might happen if it's not an instant success.

What if no one wants a cheap Tesla?      

<ul><li><keyword id="8026361" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pony-ai" source="Orion">Pony.ai</keyword> has commercialized robotaxi service in China.</li><li>The company had to qualify two years of autonomous driving tests.</li><li>For now, 100 robotaxi will operate in Guangzhou.</li></ul>The Chinese self-driving company Pony.ai, backed by <keyword id="6374528" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="toyota" source="Orion">Toyota</keyword>, gets taxi license to operate 100 autonomous vehicles as traditional taxis in Nansha, Guangzhou. Pony.ai has become the first company in the world to give robotaxi services in any city. Back in November 2021, Pony.ai gained approval for testing 67 vehicles in Beijing. The company also tried to establish its presence in the US but it has faced set back after its autonomous vehicles crashed in California on 28 October 2021, resulting in its permit getting suspended. According to Pony.ai, it has completed around 700,000 trips since April 2022 and 80% of riders are repeat customers. For qualifying taxi license, Pony.ai had to pass safety and other multifaceted vehicle qualification tests that were set by national inspection institutions. The company has to go through 24 months of testing, 1 million kilometers of testing and 200,000 kilometers of testing within Guangzhou. Pony.ai was founded by James Peng and Tiancheng Lou in California, in 2016. According to the company's vision, they aim to bring sustainability, safe and accessible mobility across the globe. The company has partnered with leading original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like Toyota, FAW Group, and GAC Group. With the taxi license permit, Pony.ai will start operation in May. It will start charging fares in the 800 square kilometers of Nansha with its 100 robotaxis. The company also plans to expand its footprint to the other areas of Guangzhou and other tier-1 cities in China next year. To book a ride and pay for the service, passengers will use PonyPilot+ App. Robotaxis will operate both day and night time (8:30 to 22:30). The taxi fares will be standard. Currently, autonomous vehicles will have a driver present in the car but the company plans to remove them over a period of time. China gets its first commercial self-driving taxi service after two years of testing

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Amir Khan is a deep tech investor who's known about ChatGPT for 10 years.</li><li>He lists three startups he wishes he had invested in years ago. </li></ul>As a venture capitalist in the deep tech sector and the managing partner at MARL Accelerator, I've reviewed over 5,000 early-stage companies and have been exposed to the latest technological advancements over the past few years.With the way technology is advancing, things that exist now were once science fiction in the 80s and 90s. These technologies will continue to shape our world and enhance our lives in ways that we can't yet fathom.<div type="image" title="Amir Khan with arms crossed" height="600" width="800" msid="99907606" hostid="261"></div>By 2030, I think there will be a significant increase in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies in the commercial sector.One of the most notable advancements is the rise of Natural Language Processing technologies such as OpenAI's <a href="https://openai.com/blog/chatgpt/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ChatGPT</a> and Google's <a href="https://blog.google/technology/ai/bard-google-ai-search-updates/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BARD</a>, which I have been following for almost 10 years.There are a few startups at the forefront of technology in their respective sectors that I believe have the potential to be the decacorns — a company valued over $100 billion — of this decade. I'm not invested in any of these. I missed the boat, but if I had the cash years ago, I would've invested.<h2>1. Owkin </h2>A health tech startup called <a href="https://owkin.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Owkin</a>, based in Paris, France, is working to build an AI model in partnership with top academic researchers and data scientists. By studying millions of patients' data, they hope to find patterns in disease diagnosis and develop new treatments tailored to each patient's genetic makeup.Because we rely on human doctors, there's a risk of misdiagnosis and mistreatment. This issue is near and dear to me because I have been misdiagnosed many times — and I'm not alone. According to <a href="https://www.leapfroggroup.org/news-events/preventing-patient-harm-and-death-diagnostic-errors-new-leapfrog-report-identifies-29" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Leapfrog Group</a>, a national watchdog organization focused on healthcare safety, diagnostic errors contribute to 40,000 - 80,000 deaths per year in the US, and over 250,000 Americans experience a diagnostic error in hospitals. Owkin started working on healthcare diagnostics in the mid-2000s, and they're ahead of the pack even though there is substantial research in this area.The development of new technology, like Owkin's platform for medical research, can have downsides as well as benefits. For one, Owkin's platform may be affected by data bias, meaning the models created may be biased or incomplete, despite their efforts to use diverse data.Additionally, only a limited number of researchers and institutions have access to Owkin's platform, which could be costly, and regulatory and ethical challenges need to be addressed to ensure data privacy, security, and compliance. Owkin will need to operate transparently and ethically to address concerns related to patient consent and transparency while navigating complex regulations.<h2>2. Motional</h2>Motional is a Boston-based autonomous tech startup that is gaining traction by successfully running the world's first robotaxi pilot program. Motional has <a href="https://motional.com/news/safety-driver-motional" target="_blank" rel="noopener">completed over 100,000 self-driving rides without any accidents</a> as of 2021.This success has excited Uber, leading to the announcement of a <a href="https://motional.com/news/motional-and-uber-announce-industry-leading-multimarket-commercial-agreement-autonomous-ride" target="_blank" rel="noopener">10-year commercial partnership</a> between the two companies to launch their public full self-driving robotaxi service in Las Vegas, NV. This service follows the successful launch of autonomous deliveries with Uber Eats in Greater Los Angeles.I grew up in India, and self-driving seemed like a dream. If you've seen the old Batman movies, you would know self-driving vehicles were promised to us in the early 2000s. Even today, we're not quite there yet — the technology isn't fully developed. And I think the reason for that is that the car itself doesn't have enough processing power. But I think the evolution of 5G technology may change that. Motional is already performing successfully and securing partnerships. They have changed the game in commercialization. As amazing as Motional sounds, there are some concerns that need to be addressed before the technology can be widely adopted. Safety is one of the biggest concerns, although Motional's technology has been shown to be safe in testing. Driverless vehicles are also vulnerable to cyberattacks. Cost is another concern, as Motional's vehicles are currently expensive to produce and not yet affordable for most people. Lastly, there are ethical concerns, such as who is responsible if a driverless vehicle causes an accident. While Motional has a lot of potential, these shortcomings need to be addressed before the technology can be widely adopted.<h2>3. Nexar</h2><a href="https://data.getnexar.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nexar</a>, a New York-based startup, is also a company working to realize our self-driving car dreams. It is a leader in the dash cam market and has the vision of creating the world's first "safe driving network." They plan to build a hive mind by connecting all the dash cams already on the road to provide a single source of truth for events that occur on the road. So the car can see what the car in front of me is seeing, what the car behind me is seeing in a "hive mind." The car network sensors simultaneously plug into a cloud sending data and receiving data. That is why Nexar will be able to succeed in cities. like New York and San Francisco, while vehicles like the Tesla tend to freeze in these kinds of areas. The points of concern regarding Nexar's autonomous driving technology are that it is still under development and not yet fully autonomous. While Nexar's dash cams can identify dangerous situations, they cannot drive the car autonomously. The technology is expensive and may have bugs that need to be fixed. It is also important to check local regulations before using it, as its legality is not yet established in all jurisdictions.<h2>AI will change our lives in other areas too</h2>But I'm only scratching the surface of AI and Machine learning capabilities and how they will transform our lives.Their impact will go far beyond the healthcare and transportation sectors. These smart glasses were showcased at a recent conference held at California State University, Northridge. The glasses use AI to read a sign at a train station, printed documents or words on any object. In addition, a person can have their surroundings described aloud. The Envision smart glasses are equipped with an 8-megapixel camera with a wide field of view. The smart glass has wifi and Bluetooth capabilities, which keeps the user connected. Also, it has a built-in speaker and a battery that can last up to five to six hours. The glasses weigh less than 50 grams and can be operated with a smartphone and independently. It runs on a Qualcomm quad-core processor. Currently, Envision smart glasses are not available in India but it will be interesting to see their price in India. Features of Envision glasses The glasses can read and speak in more than 60 languages, briefing each piece of text including longer texts, different street signs and even book pages. It also features the ability to perform video calls through which another person can verbally guide the user about their surroundings. Glasses are also capable of object recognition, colour detection, face recognition, light detection and even exporting text. To survive the environment surrounding the company has made it water and dust resistant. Envision was the idea of Karthik Mahadevan and Karthik Kannan. They both are alumni of the College of Engineering, Guindy and they founded Envision in 2017, located in Hague in The Netherlands. The cofounder of Envision, Karthik Kannan said, “Our mission is to improve the lives of the world’s two billion people who are blind or visually impaired by providing them with life-changing assistive technologies, products, and services.” You will be surprised to know that Envision glasses are built on the enterprise edition of <keyword id="1118639" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-glass" source="Orion">Google glass</keyword>. Yes, you heard it right. Google Glass is still alive. The company unveiled its glasses back in 2013 and it was capable of taking calls, texts, pictures and can even look at maps.
