Japan and Singapore are close to making it happen in the service industry. SoftBank Robotics (SBRG) and China's Keenon Robotics plan to work together to make <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/softbank-robotics-and-keenon-robotics-announce-strategic-global-partnership-driving-productivity-and-efficiency-for-the-service-industry-301380464.html">robot waiters</a> widely available in Japan and Singapore.<br /><br />According to the two companies, the use of robots as waiters will “allow better efficiency and productivity.” The robots won’t fully take over the industry though and are looked at more like assistants who will help humans in serving food. This robot is said to be equipped with multi-point delivery modes and can deliver four dishes at once. Keenbot is also smart as it has an intelligent scheduling system, and it can avoid obstacles. The robot has a flexible structure and speed limit in smart zones. Keenbot will be offered first in SBRG’s key markets which are Singapore and Japan. The use of robotics increased ever since the pandemic as a viable solution for contactless service. Keenbot is also expected to help in this regard according to Yee Wee Tang, Managing Director, Grab Singapore. Robot waiters could soon replace humans in Singapore and Japan

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Japanese company <keyword id="163404" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Softbank">Softbank</keyword> debuted Servi, a new food service robot.</li><li>Softbank is the company behind humanoid robot Pepper and the owner of Boston Dynamics.</li><li>Servi has already worked at Denny's and other restaurants amid Japan's labor shortage.</li></ul><p>Japanese <keyword id="6358815" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tech">tech</keyword> giant Softbank is testing out a new food service robot in Japan, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-softbank-group-robotics/softbank-brings-food-service-robot-to-labour-strapped-japan-idUSKBN26J0B8">Reuters reported.</a> Servi, the appropriately-named robot, has several tiers that can be used to deliver food to customers as an answer both to social distancing because of COVID-19 and Japan's labor shortage.</p><p>Servi will act as a waiter, with the ability to carry food and drinks from the kitchen to tables. It will use 3D cameras and <keyword id="1522310" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="LiDAR">LIDAR</keyword> technology to navigate around tables and customers, the same technology used by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lidar-solutions-autonomous-vehicles-mass-production-2018-1">autonomous vehicles.</a> It officially launches in Japan in January but has already been tested by some restaurants as a way to offer contactless service, including Denny's.</p><div type="image" title="Servi" height="1834" width="2446" msid="78477181" hostid="261"></div><p>When Servi launches, companies can lease the robot for $950 per month over a three year period. It's made by <a href="https://www.bearrobotics.ai/products/index.html">Bear Robotics</a> in California, which also produced a Servi Mini for serving drinks. The full-size Servi has two trays and a bus tub, while the Servi Mini has one tray and one tub. Both can be controlled by an attached touchscreen or external tablet.</p><div type="image" title="Servi" height="1847" width="2462" msid="78477187" hostid="261"></div><p>Earlier this year, Bear <keyword id="62549" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Robotics">Robotics</keyword> <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2020/01/22/bear-robotics-a-company-making-robot-waiters-just-raised-a-32-million-round-led-by-softbank/">raised $32 million</a> in a funding round led by Softbank. Softbank has a history of investing in robotics startups, like <a href="https://amp.insider.com/why-softbank-bought-boston-dynamics-google-alphabet-robots-2017-6">Boston Dynamics</a>, the company behind the infamous dog-like robots that went on sale this summer.</p><p>Softbank's most famous humanoid robot, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/softbank-pepper-robot-coronavirus-japan-and-germany-2020-5">Pepper</a>, has also been used throughout the pandemic as a greeter and to ease loneliness among mild COVID-19 cases in Japan. Softbank's new food service robot Servi could replace waitstaff and food runners at restaurants

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Imagine a city filled with drones that help the National Health Service send life-saving equipment to an emergency, sensor-controlled waste bins that tell the council your rubbish is ready to be picked up, and robots to fix and maintain crucial infrastructure and transportation. Or even just to deliver your pizza.</p><p>This is a <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/249423/bis-13-1217-smart-city-market-opportunties-uk.pdf">Smart City</a>, and it is <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">why Dan Byles, a Conservative politician for North Warwickshire and Bedworth, is leaving parliament. He is taking up two new roles in the private sector to help build a digitised, more efficient Britain. Not just in the private sector but in state-run services as well.</span></p><p>Right after the May General Election, he'll join a tech company that helps provide platforms to held build Smart Cities, <a href="http://www.living-planit.com/what_is_living_planit.htm">Living PlanIT</a>, full-time as part of the senior management team. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">He'll then become the chair of a organisation that helps promote Smart Cities, SmarterUK, around the same time although the exact date is not finalised yet.</span></p><p>"Since 2010, I became increasingly interested in Smart Cities and the complex systems to run a society. It's no longer about standalone verticals, it's about finding a way to use technology to make a country more efficient," Byles told Business Insider during a visit to Portcullis House in Westminster.</p><p>"I saw a gap in the market to bridge policymakers, the private sector and NGOs and charities from making Smart Cities a reality. There is a hunger to talk about this and the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> is primed to be the leader in developing this sector. We need better open data sources, streamlining supply chains and better digitally savvy cities."</p><p><strong>From parliament to the complex world of Smart Cities</strong></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>During his four years as an MP, Byles successfully championed and chaired three cross-party parliamentary groups: Unconventional Oil &amp; Gas, Smart Cities, and Skills &amp; Employment.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">He is also</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> a member of the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee and is the sponsor of an historic Private Members Bill on House of Lords Reform.</span></p><p>However, in July last year he announced that <a href="http://www.danbyles.co.uk/conservatives/news/dan-byles-mp-statement">he was going to leave parliament after the General Election in May 2015</a>.</p><p>"I initially stepped down but with no agenda. I was looking what to do next. But I was very fortunate that a lot of offers came my way from the oil and gas sector as well as the Smart Cities arena," said Byles, who also was the youngest serving major in the British army, at the age of 27, before becoming an MP.</p><p>"However, as I said, what interests me in the Smart Cities sector is how energy, infrastructure, healthcare, transportation and many other areas would benefit and become more efficient through technological developments. I can bring all my experience together for this arena."</p><p><strong>Robots, tech infrastructure ... and Uber</strong></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Some of the world's fastest-developing countries are already trying to build numerous cities that resemble something from a sci-fi movie. India is trying to </span><a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/r-indias-smart-cities-would-be-stupid-without-disaster-strategy-2015-3">build 100 Smart Cities</a>,<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> to not only improve the quality of life for its </span><a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/r-indias-smart-cities-would-be-stupid-without-disaster-strategy-2015-3#ixzz3U4vm8Byl">1.2 billion residents but also to tackle its increasingly extreme weather</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">.</span></p><p>In Japan, the use of robotics for everything to serving food to <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/japanese-robot-restaurant-goes-to-syndey-2015-1">cleaning your house, is becoming the norm</a>.</p><p>Meanwhile, some of the world's biggest companies are rolling out technological innovations to help make business more efficient and cost effective. For example, <a href="https://vimeo.com/113374910">Amazon uses 15,000 Kiva robots across 10 order fulfilment centres</a> in the US that can collect merchandise. A Kiva can lift 750 pounds. A human cannot. </p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"There's no 'one size fits all' approach to developing Smart Cities as no one has completed a fully realised one yet," said Byles. "But the attitude and mindset from businesses and the public for greater tech infrastructure to make their lives easier is there. It's empowering to see businesses, government bodies and the public wanting to use innovation for everything from procurement to day-to-day business more efficient. We just need to tie this altogether to make Smart Cities. Anything is possible, look how</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> Uber has grown in five years."</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Uber, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/uber-1-million-women-jobs-un-2020-2015-3">the increasingly popular ride-share and taxi-hailing app</a>, was founded in 2009. By December 2014, its service was available in 53 countries and more than 200 cities. It is an example of understanding how an already developed industry could benefit from a streamlined approach to connect the buy and sell side in an easy to use way, says Byles.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The appetite is strong for the latest tech developments to make society run better. Just take a look at the 2015 <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/lg-exec-could-miss-ces-over-sabotaged-washing-machine-2014-12">International CES trade expo in December last year</a>. Window-cleaning robots by Ecovacs Robotics were presented there, and iRobot CEO Colin Angle <span>delivered his keynote address <span>via live video </span></span>on a moving robot.</span></p><p><strong>Smart Cities to accommodate the growing population</strong></p><p class="float_right"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Byles highlighted how the world population, not just Britain's, is expanding rapidly and in tandem the technology available through smartphones and the internet means that the dynamics of globalisation are changing dramatically too.</span></p><p>For example, in Britain's capital alone, the population is estimated to grow by one full tube train every three days, <span>according to Transport for London.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Meanwhile, globally, urban populations are growing by an estimated 1.3 million per week, according to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA). That's the equivalent of the world creating a new city the size of Birmingham weekly.</span></p><p>In tandem, the world's growing population is becoming more hooked up to technology. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The Economist estimated that </span><a href="http://www.economist.com/news/leaders/21645180-smartphone-ubiquitous-addictive-and-transformative-planet-phones">by 2020 an estimated 80% of adults globally will have access to a smartphone</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> - bringing billions of more people online. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Meanwhile, in a report by McKinsey Global Institute called 'Urban world: cities and the rise of the consuming class in 2012,' by 2025, the world would have built new urban floor space equivalent to the area of Australia.</span></p><p>Byles told us that it will take some time to get all cities up to speed before they become Smart Cities. Even getting fast internet available across the entire span of country is a big feat.</p><p>"There's no single city in the world that has become a fully Smart City but Britain could potentially lead the world in showing how it's done," said Byles. "The UK has already launched a number of pilot projects across a variety of cities which has already shown the cost benefits and efficiency that technology can provide if applied to every day processes from transportation, to infrastructure, to waste disposal to healthcare."</p><p><strong>Starting off small</strong></p><p class="float_right"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span>Last year marked the start of some big Smart City pilot projects in the UK.</span></p><p>In May 2014, Milton Keynes installed <a href="https://futurecities.catapult.org.uk/project-full-view/-/asset_publisher/oDS9tiXrD0wi/content/project-milton-keynes-internet-of-things/">sensors into recycling bins so that the local council would know when the bins were ready to be collected</a>. Birmingham said it is rolling out improved <a href="http://digitalbirmingham.co.uk/projects/">wifi services across the entire city</a> and is even helping fund businesses <a href="http://digitalbirmingham.co.uk/project/birmingham-connectivity-voucher-scheme/">who need a faster broadband connection to do business</a>.</p><p>Manchester, Glasgow, and Bristol are a few other cities are aiming to digitise their landscapes more and create more open data, networks while also putting plans forward to get old and emerging businesses onto computer networks. London already has the Oyster card system train payments system, and that has branched out from the capital to some parts of Surrey. The UK is also looking to roll out fast broadband services to every corner of the country. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">UK train network Crossrail is also looking at how it can develop greater </span><a href="http://74f85f59f39b887b696f-ab656259048fb93837ecc0ecbcf0c557.r23.cf3.rackcdn.com/assets/library/document/c/original/crossrail_innovation_strategy.pdf">Smart City capabilities through its research body</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">.</span></p><p><strong>Challenges on the horizon</strong></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>To make Smart Cities become a reality, the government, private sector, and NGOs and charities need to coordinate their efforts, says Byles. For example, Britain may face challenges when it comes to applying this dynamic to state-owned institutions like the NHS.</span></p><p>"Any development to something like healthcare is controversial and it's likely this could hold back the sector from getting on board with Smart Cities," said Byles. "But the potential for cutting costs and making it more efficient is incredibly important. The growing population means there is greater strain on our health services and technology can help with dealing with the inflow of new patients." <a href="http://www.nhsconfed.org/resources/key-statistics-on-the-nhs">The NHS deals with over 1 million patients every 36 hours</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">. </span></p><p>But as Byles puts it, there is "always a danger in democracy." According to Wedbush Securities analyst Daniel Ives, there are roughly 350 million iPhones out there waiting anxiously to be upgraded. </p><p>Perhaps in a bid to summon the magic of past upgrade cycles, <keyword id="6354427" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="apple">Apple</keyword> gave its latest gadget a retro-look with flat, metallic edges that harken back to the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/iphone-4-reviews-2010-6">iPhone 4</a>. (That model, released in 2010, was, incidentally, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wwdc-2010-iphone-4-2010-6">last iPhone to be unveiled on stage by Steve Jobs</a>.)</p><p>Wall Street wasn't feeling it. Apple shares <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/apple-stock-price-5g-iphone-12-lineup-event-tim-cook-2020-10-1029676081#">tumbled as much as 4% in regular trading, losing $81 billion in market value. </a> (True, Apple's stock is up 66% for the year and had risen 6% on Monday ahead of the event).</p><p><strong>So here's the big question:</strong> What will make those 350 million owners of older iPhones decide they need to buy the new iPhone? </p><p>Presumably the answer is 5G, the latest and greatest new technology.</p><p><strong>But...</strong> there's not yet a "killer app" out there right now that takes advantage of 5G in such a mind-blowing way that it completely changes how you use your phone. And the most popular online video games that would, like "Fortnite" or game-streaming services like Xbox Game Pass, are currently <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5g-iphone-12-with-no-fortnite-and-xbox-game-pass-2020-10">banned by Apple</a>.</p><p>One Wall Street analyst told Bloomberg that the killer app for the new iPhone is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-smaller-cheaper-iphone-12-mini-2020-10">the range of prices for different models</a> — not exactly a ringing endorsement for Apple's latest innovations.</p><p>That said, there are some cool new features in the <keyword id="8291932" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="iPhone-12">iPhone 12</keyword>:</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-iphone-12-pro-release-lidar-augmented-reality-glasses-2020-10"><strong>It's got LiDAR,</strong></a> the same laser sensors that help self-driving cars get around. Unlike the spinning metallic LiDAR sensors you may have seen atop autonomous car prototypes, the iPhone LiDAR is a discreet component that promises to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-iphone-12-pro-release-lidar-augmented-reality-glasses-2020-10">improve the augmented reality experience</a>. Exhibit A: new Snapchat lenses.</p><p><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-magsafe-wireless-charger-iphone-case-pad-duo-magnetic-2020-10">New magnetic charging technology</a> </strong>— dubbed MagSafe by Apple — has the potential to open an exciting new world of accessories. The iPhone's magnetic backside means you can not only snap it on to a wireless charger, but you can snap lots of other cool things onto your phone, like cases, wallets and more. The iPhone is the new fridge!</p><div type="image" title="Apple iPhone 12 October Event" height="1600" width="2870" msid="78667457" hostid="261"></div><p>And finally, the new iPhone has something <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/watch-apple-event-october-live-blog-iphone-12-homepod-announcements-2020-10">Apple calls special "Ceramic Shield" glass,</a> which the company claims will provide quadruple resistance when the phone is inevitably dropped. Considering that I cracked my current phone's screen the first week I had it, that's almost as good as a killer app in my book. </p><h2>Apple's latest controversy has an easy solution</h2><p>By now you may have heard the news that the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-iphone-12-launch-without-wired-earbuds-box-2020-10">iPhone 12 will not include earbuds or a wall charger.</a> Apple framed the move as a way to help the environment by reducing waste and unnecessary packaging.</p><p>Apple also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-iphone-12-earpods-iphone-power-adapter-price-cut-2020-10">dropped the price of its wireless EarPods and iPhone power adapters by $10,</a> presumably as a way to take the sting out of its decision to stop including key accessories with the phone.</p><p><strong>Here's an even better idea:</strong> Apple should give buyers of the new iPhones a credit to claim a free pair of earbuds and a wall charger on request. This would allow Apple to provide the laudable environmental benefit of not shipping unnecessary items to everyone, but also dispel the not unreasonable suspicion that Apple is using the environmental benefit as a pretext to juice up its sales of after-market accessories. Plus, its AirPods and accessories business don't appear to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-2-trillion-company-market-value-stock-powerful-iphone-ecosystem-2020-8">show any signs of slowing</a>.</p><div type="image" title="Tim Cook" height="2088" width="3000" msid="78667458" hostid="261"></div><h2>Snapshot: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/softbank-food-service-robot-servi-in-photos-2020-10">Meals on robo-wheels</a></h2><p>A California robotics startup is hoping the sight of rolling, non-human food servers will lure human diners back into restaurants. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/softbank-food-service-robot-servi-in-photos-2020-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Servi looks like a Roomba vacuum cleaner equipped with tiers of trays</a>. Using LiDAR and 3D cameras — the same tech used in autonomous cars — the Servi navigates around tables and other obstacles, delivering drinks, entrees and other fresh fare from the kitchen while presumably sparing diners an airborne serving of coronavirus.</p><p>Bear Robotics, the makers of the Servi, recently raised $32 million in a funding round led by SoftBank. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Kim Kyung-Hoon</span></p><p class="caption">SoftBank humanoid robot known as Pepper dressed as a waiter moves its hand at Pepper World 2016 Summer during SoftBank World 2016 conference in Tokyo, Japan, July 21, 2016</p></div><p></p></div></div>Computers may be getting a better <keyword id="6355445" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Education">education</keyword> than students, according to one expert at Google.</p><p>Jonathan Rochelle, head of the product management team for Google's education outreach arm, called Google for Education, says the techniques we use to teach our machines are far more effective at making them smarter than the methods we use to teach living, breathing students.</p><p>Whereas machines learn algorithms and systems for building knowledge, kids get facts and equations jammed down their throats, he says.</p><p>"We're not teaching them <em>how</em> to learn," Rochelle tells Business Insider.</p><p>Much of <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/surprising-facts-learn-anything-faster-2016-6/#mistakes-should-be-celebrated-and-studied-3">the science about learning</a> suggests that Rochelle's criticism is well-founded. Cognitive science has shown that in order to grow into capable adults, kids shouldn't just learn when George Washington crossed the Delaware or how to compute the area under a curve. They also need to develop the skills that let them synthesize that raw information and draw conclusions when given a specific problem.</p><p>As Rochelle explains, that's basically how computer algorithms work. <a href="http://www.techrepublic.com/article/ibm-watson-the-smart-persons-guide/">IBM Watson is so smart</a> because it continuously takes in new information and fits it into the frameworks it was given at birth. When it encounters a foreign query, it can make an educated guess based on all that prior knowledge.</p><p>The good news for our kids is that teaching methods - like programming strategies - can change. Programming didn't always take the algorithmic approach, Rochelle says. Thirty years ago, the field of machine learning looked a lot like how pedagogy works today. Engineers gave their rudimentary machines explicit instructions. They told them what to know and provided few frameworks for them to make sense of new inputs on their own.</p><p>But then developers got smarter about teaching their machines - they experienced "machine-learning learning," as Rochelle puts it.</p><p>Educators could do well to adopt the same principles. In practice, that means helping kids understand <em>why</em> a particular math equation works and when it's applicable, rather than just teaching the formula.</p><p>When students are learning that way, Rochell explains, "you don't have to feed them the actual answers. ... It's more, here's information that got us to a prior conclusion.
