A robot developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras to help eliminate <keyword id="6390598" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manual-scavenging" source="Orion">manual scavenging</keyword> in India, is all set for field deployment, the institute said on Thursday. Ten units of the robot named '<keyword id="12828292" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="homosep" source="Orion">HomoSEP</keyword>' will be first deployed across Tamil Nadu, and later in Gujarat and Maharashtra. "The septic tank is a poisonous environment, filled with semi-solid and semi-fluid human faecal material that make up about two-thirds of the tank. Hundreds of deaths are reported every year across India, due to manual scavenging in septic tanks despite bans and prohibitory orders," said Prof. Prabhu Rajagopal, from Department of Mechanical Engineering, <keyword id="6356755" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-madras" source="Orion">IIT Madras</keyword>, in a statement. HomoSEP was first developed in 2019 as a final year Masters' project by Divanshu Kumar under the guidance of Prof. Rajagopal. Despite the pandemic-related difficulties over the next couple of years, the IIT Madras researchers collaborated with an IIT Madras-incubated start-up Solinas Integrity Private Limited (now headed by Kumar) to further develop HomoSEP. The path-breaking project was also supported first by several CSR donors over the years. The HomoSEP Robot can homogenise the hard sludge in septic tanks through custom-developed rotary blade mechanism and pump the tank slurry using an integrated suction mechanism. Sanitation workers will be able to operate the HomoSEP on their own, after being provided with the relevant training and appropriate guidance along with necessary safety measures, both of which our team is working on right now. But the company also has an excellent Scooba series of robots that wash your floor with detergent and water.
For those who would rather laze on the couch (and that's all of us), we can now set an autonomous robot loose on the floor and it will do a pretty good job.
The second in iRobot's floor-washing series is the Scooba 450. It looks like a heavy-duty Roomba and operates in much the same fashion, using sensors and algorithms to navigate your floor so that it covers every exposed inch while avoiding your rugs. It comes with a charger and stand to help speed up the drying process when it's finished.
I got to use one for a while and was simultaneously impressed and grossed out at how well it cleans floors. To the observer's eye, it appears to be largely working in box patterns to cover all of your exposed floor. Bumping into a rug causes it to change direction, so there's no need to take up your rugs if you don't want to. It cleans in three stages, first soaking your floors, then scrubbing them, then squeegeeing them dry. It doesn't make any more sound than you'd expect - I was able to watch TV one room away without needing to adjust the volume a significant amount.
When the robot's done cleaning, it's unfortunately up to the user to empty the unit of the dirty water. You probably won't like the way it looks, but that's only because the Scooba works really well. According to iRobot, the Scooba will remove 99.3% of bacteria from your floor using its cleaning process. After seeing the filthy water that came out of the tank when it finished cleaning, 99.3% sounds about right.
Lazy germophobes such as myself will have difficulty saying no to this device, and with good reason - it's an effective housecleaning robot that's really good at what it does, totally rising to the challenge of cleaning gross floors.
The Scooba costs <a href="http://store.irobot.com/product/index.jsp?productId=29037756">$600</a> and I have no complaints of substance. The Roomba, its vacuum-only cousin, has an excellent return-to-dock feature that executes upon completion of vacuuming, which would make an excellent addition to the Scooba, but I imagine this is absent here (and in its Scooba 390 predecessor) due to the difficulties associated with safely carrying water in a battery-powered robot.
While my cat largely ignored the Scooba, your mileage may vary. Here's a video showing the robot in action:

Washing The Floor Is No Fun So I Had This Robot Do It For Me

Singapore, Apr 15 () Scientists have developed a semi-autonomous robot that can disinfect large surfaces quickly, and reduce the risk of cleaners picking up the novel coronavirus from potentially contaminated areas. The researchers from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore are planning to have public trials to support the fight against COVID-19. Named eXtreme Disinfection roBOT (XDBOT), it can be wirelessly controlled via a laptop or tablet, removing the need for cleaners to be in contact with surfaces, the researchers said. The new robot differs from other disinfection robots currently on the market that are primarily intended to clean and vacuum floor surfaces and are unable to disinfect odd-shaped surfaces or anything above ground level, they said. Comprising a semi-autonomous control unit with motorised wheels, XDBOT has a six-axis robotic arm that can mimic human movement to reach awkward locations such as under tables and beds, as well as doorknobs, tabletops and light switches. Instead of a conventional pressure-spray nozzle, it uses an electrostatic-charged nozzle to ensure a wider and further spread of the disinfectant, behind and over hidden surfaces, according to the researchers. Unlike typical nozzles, XDBOT's nozzle discharges chemicals with a positive electrical charge, they said. These disinfectants, the researchers noted, will then be attracted to all negatively-charged surfaces. Surfaces already covered with the disinfectant will then repel the spray, making this method very efficient, they explained. Professor Chen I-Ming, a roboticist at NTU, said the XDBOT was conceived when COVID19 cases started to spike worldwide in mid-February, and disinfection efforts were being stepped up at airports, hotels and hospitals. "To stop the transmission of a virus means we need a way to quickly disinfect surfaces, which is a labour-intensive and repetitive activity," Chen explained. "Using our new robot from a distance, a human operator can precisely control the disinfection process, increasing surface area cleaned by up to four times, with zero contact with surfaces," he said. XDBOT can navigate semi-autonomously in any environment using LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and high-definition cameras, while its arm is controlled by a human operator -- like a tank with a rotating turret, the researchers said. The operator can control the robot from up to 30 metres using a laptop or a tablet, which can be increased to 50m or further with more antennas installed on XDBOT, they said. The researchers said the robot possesses an 8.5 litre tank that can carry a variety of disinfectants appropriate to different environments such as childcare centres, hospitals, nursing homes and shopping malls. They said it can run for four hours continuously on a rechargeable battery pack and is estimated to be able to disinfect a surface area of up to four times that of manual cleaning. Rowe should know considering he sampled 300 jobs in over eight seasons on "Dirty Jobs," gave a Ted Talk in 2011 on the value of work, and started the <a href="http://www.mikeroweworks.com/mikes-office/giving-back/" target="_blank">Mike Rowe Works Foundation</a>.
He's also <a href="http://dsc.discovery.com/tv-shows/dirty-jobs/videos/milking-camels.htm" target="_blank">milked camels</a>.
Rowe said that one of the biggest lessons from "Dirty Jobs" was when he first heard of the notion of taking the "reverse commute" - to go in a career path in the opposite direction from the one you're currently on - from a <a href="http://www.mikeroweworks.com/2009/03/septic-tank-technician-dirty-jobs/" target="_blank">septic tank technician in Wisconsin</a> named Les Swanson who was formerly a psychiatrist.
Rowe explained how somebody could go from a psychiatrist to a crap cleaner:

"We were standing one day up to our nipples basically in this lift pump chamber ... you have no idea what goes on in there. It's where all the stuff you flush down the toilet accumulates before it heads to the waste water treatment plant. We're standing in this thing knocking hunks of cholesterol off the walls, it's 120 degrees, it's like steady Judy, steady. It's the 7th level of hell.
I say to Les, 'Man how did you get here?' He laughs and says 'What do you mean?' I say, 'What did you do before this?' He says, 'I was a psychiatrist.' So I asked him, 'What brought you to this business?' And without missing a beat Les says, 'I got tired of dealing with other people's shit.'
The moral of the the story is huge, he [Les] didn't dream about being a septic tank cleaner, he just looked around [as a psychiatrist] and saw where everybody was going, took stock of what he was doing and thought, 'I'm not gonna go that way.'"

In other words, the job doesn't define who you are or how happy you are, it is about the passion you bring to your work and how you choose to live your life, whether you're a website designer or a septic tank technician. There's no reason why you can't reverse direction and find satisfaction.
Rowe also helped field a question from the audience about how to end professional relationships without burning bridges when you realize it isn't working out:

Im so glad I was always decent to people, or tried to be anyhow. Never ever underestimate the importance … show up early, stay late and be nice. You will stand out in this industry and people will go out of their way to hire you later."

This goes for any profession, not just production. You have no way of knowing if that eager intern you had last summer could one day end up in a position of power with the ability to hire, or fire, you.

Best robotic vacuum cleaner in India

<div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image">APThe Associated Press headquarters in Manhattan.</div></div>On Friday afternoon, the Associated Press published <a href="http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/E/EU_IRELAND_CHILDRENS_MASS_GRAVES?SITE=AP&amp;SECTION=HOME&amp;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&amp;CTIME=2014-06-20-14-48-31">a lengthy correction on a story from earlier this month</a> about recently unearthed records that showed <a href="http://bigstory.ap.org/article/irish-church-under-fire-over-childrens-mass-grave">796 children were buried in a mass grave</a> outside an old Irish orphanage for the children of unwed mothers.
The AP correction acknowledged four errors including that it "incorrectly reported that the children had not received Roman Catholic baptisms" and "that Catholic teaching at the time was to deny baptism and Christian burial to the children of unwed mothers."
AP spokesman Paul Colford told Business Insider Sunday that the mistakes were primarily the result of "editorial errors that included unfortunate jumps to flawed conclusions." Colford also described how this resulted in the false claim the children had not been baptized.
"AP was aware that Irish priests did sometimes refuse to baptize children if the parents could not pledge to raise the children as Catholics, and that those children were denied burial in marked graves in Catholic cemeteries," Colford said. "Here, we incorrectly made the leap that a similar logic applied to the children of unwed mothers. (As it was, Irish news media also were reporting the same that the babies had not been baptized.)"
According to the AP, documents subsequently showed "many children at the orphanage were baptized." AP also noted that, while some children of unwed mothers may have been denied baptisms by the Catholic church "at times" during the early 20th century, "it was not church teaching."
In addition to those errors, the correction said AP incorrectly described the orphanage as having opened in 1926 when it actually opened a year earlier. The AP story also initially quoted a researcher who said they believed the children were buried in an old septic tank. In the correction, AP acknowledged "the researcher has since clarified that without excavation and forensic analysis it is impossible to know how many sets of remains the tank contains, if any."
Colford said the issue with the septic tank "required more of a clarification than a correction" since the researcher's claims were not necessarily contradictory.
"A researcher first told AP that most of the remains were probably interred in a disused septic tank. Last week, the researcher said without excavation and forensic analysis there is no way of confirming that," Colford explained. "The two statements are not contradictory, as she was expressing an opinion about what was likely true. She is now stressing that she cannot say so with certainty."
Colford declined to comment when Business Insider asked if anyone at the organization was disciplined as a result of the errors in this story.
"As a company policy we just don't comment on personnel matters," said Colford.

She cleans. Rosie is the ideal maid."Narrator: These robots are the closest thing we have to Rosie. They vacuum, mop, wipe down windows, and even scrub toilets. I clean my apartment twice a week and could always use some help. I wanted to see if it was possible to have these robots clean my entire apartment, so I could get some of that time spent cleaning back.This doesn't go very far. Oh no, oh no, oh no. I'm just unscrewing the top of my toilet to remove it. It's like a vacuum!I went on Amazon to find four of the highest-rated cleaning robots.I'll be testing out the Eufy Robovac 35c. It's Wi-Fi-enabled, and can handle hard floors and thin to medium carpets. It works with both Alexa and Google Assistant, is a competitor to Roomba, and retails for $300.The iRobot Braava Jet 240 mopping robot. It mops and sweeps and retails for $170. The Hobot-268, a window-cleaning robot that can suction itself to glass and clean its way around windows. It retails for $375. And the Altan Giddel, a toilet-cleaning robot. It's the only one on the market and retails for $349.Will they be easy to set up? Will they save me some time? And will they get the job done?First, we tidied up, put away wires and shoes so they wouldn't get caught up in the robots. Then we made a bit of a mess with some crumbs and other debris to give the robots a little challenge. Let's bring on the robots. First up, the Eufy Robovac. Initially, it was a little tough to connect to Wi-Fi. The issue was it's not compatible with 5-gigahertz networks, but once we connected to the 2.4-gigahertz network, we were ready to roll.I wanna say they go here. Ha, look at that! Oh! Eufy gave us some magnetic boundary strips, so we're going to just place them around the rug. Although not the sleekest design, for the most part they worked. You just have to make sure they're really secure to the ground. Oh no, oh no. If the included strips aren't enough, you can purchase more. If the strips aren't covering an area you want avoided, the robot will find a way around them. No, don't come on the rug! Oh! The robot uses two side brushes to push debris into its center suction area. This was mostly effective, and it tended to pick up anything it rolled over. These little brushes almost push the crumbs farther away, so it makes more work for the robot. It eventually does pick them up. This wasn't a problem for big, open areas, where the robot eventually made it to the spot the dirt or crumbs landed, but if it landed in a corner or under something, like a cabinet or fridge, the robot was unable to suck it up.Are you confused? That's really gross. Overall, the Eufy was pretty effective. I don't think it could replace a full vacuum, but it would be great if I'm getting ready for company to come over and I just wanna run it in between my deep cleanings. After the vacuum, it was time to mop.The Braava Jet was super easy to set up, however, once I had it going it did bump into corners and baseboards. Ooh, what is happening? I don't know what it's doing. This doesn't go very far. And it's thin width made it take a while to clean even small areas. I even tried to change the pattern that it navigated in, but it didn't seem to make a difference. It went back and forth a lot over the same areas, and seemed to keep cleaning areas it had already done. Unfortunately, it left my floor pretty soaked, but it did grab some dirt, so at least the cleaning pads seemed to work. Braava Jet is putting me to work now. I was a little disappointed because iRobot's Roombas have great reviews, and the Braava Jet just didn't really clean the way I thought it would, and wasn't as effective. Yeah, so you're done for today. Thank you, thank you for cleaning.To the window. I don't even know how this is going to attach to the window. Are there stickies or, like, magnets? The Hobot window robot was super easy to set up, I just had to put on the cleaning pads, spray down the window, and it was set to go. It's like a vacuum! It's controlled with a remote, which you can use to control its movements or tell it to move autonomously. You only have so much slack to clean your windows, because this specific model has to be plugged in while in use. They do have a newer model, which is rechargeable and has a built-in tank and sprayer. The Hobot uses suction to adhere to the window, and I was surprised at how well it hung on. I kept waiting for it to fall off, and it never did. However, it took a really long time to work its way over the window, and didn't really seem to follow any of the directions I was trying to make it navigate. It kept going down, which made me wonder if gravity was just too strong for it. The robot did get some of the dirt off, but it did leave a lot of streak marks, which made the windows look just as bad as they were before I cleaned them with the Hobot. It's not something I would use again on my windows, and they would've looked a lot cleaner if I just did it myself. I think it's a neat concept, but it's not practical. Your first step is to remove the toilet seat by unscrewing the nuts. I'm just unscrewing the top of my toilet to remove it. It comes with a bracket you have to attach to your toilet, which is supposed to be a permanent install that you then slide the robot in and out of. The installation was supposed to be just three easy steps, but it took much longer. It wouldn't let me reattach my toilet seat, so I took a little trip to Home Depot and picked up various-size screws to try and make it fit. I'm at Home Depot trying to find the right size screws to fit my Giddel robot, the ones I have right now are too short and the robot doesn't come with any additional ones, so wish me luck. There's a lot to choose from. Well, thank goodness that I purchased those screws, because they came in handy when even my dad attempted to try it on two other toilets.Narrator: Thanks for helping me put together my toilet robot.Dad: It's no problem, Alex. It's what I live for. It takes a little finesse to install the hardware, to line it up properly.Narrator: Should lock right in.Dad: It should. This is just not working.Narrator: The problem is the bracket doesn't fit all toilet seats, and when we finally got it mounted on my toilet, the size made it impossible to reattach the seat. The Giddel didn't even really fit inside my toilet. It started with the rim, but just seemed to gently brush it. At times it looked like it was barely touching it at all, and as it rotated, it kept hitting the sides of the toilet. When it started inside the bowl, it didn't look like it was applying much pressure at all. It didn't really get rid of any hard-water stains inside it, and I couldn't really see much of a before-and-after difference. It would be great if they could include additional screw sizes, or ways to fit more toilet-seat types. I could see the installation causing a lot of problems for people who are expecting the seamless experience shown in the promotional video. This robot was a real struggle. I could've cleaned so many toilets in the time that it took me to get this one set up and going, and it didn't even clean the toilet.Well, the robots took a really long time to get the job done and they didn't save me much time, 'cause I was constantly watching over them to make sure they weren't getting into trouble. I feel like I could've cleaned everything in less than half the amount of time the robots took, and I could've done a much better job. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Suffolk County, Long Island's heavy reliance on septic tanks is contaminating its groundwater.</li><li>It's also restricting the construction of dense housing as home prices and rents soar.</li></ul>When you flush the toilet, you probably don't consider where its contents go. The people of Suffolk County, Long Island, need to start considering it. That’s because the county — which encompasses the eastern portion of the island, including the Hamptons — relies overwhelmingly on septic tanks and cesspools, rather than a public sewer system, and those outdated systems are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.savethesound.org/2023/07/14/suffolk-county-faces-crossroads-moment-for-clean-water/#:~:text=In%20the%20first%20paragraph%20of,problem%3A%20%E2%80%9CNitrogen%2C%20which%20primarily">contaminating its groundwater aquifers</a>.And the sewer issue is also making another, much more politicized, problem worse: housing affordability.Like most of the suburbs surrounding New York City, Suffolk County is suffering from a major shortage of homes. The county makes it illegal to build anything but single-family homes in the vast majority of its residential neighborhoods, keeping supply low and prices inflated. Its inadequate sewer system makes it difficult or impossible to build denser housing in much the same way that its restrictive zoning laws do.Some housing advocates believe local officials are using the county's sewer issues as an excuse to prevent new and denser housing construction. Hunter Gross, president of a nonprofit pro-housing group in the town of Huntington on the county’s western edge, said local elected officials hide behind wastewater issues in order to dodge the housing debate.“They realize that if they do build the needed sewer system, then they would have to build the needed housing,” Gross said.<h2>No upzoning without sewers — and vice versa</h2>Long Island has public sewer lines, on-site sewage treatment plants, and individual septic tanks. But about 75% of Suffolk County properties rely on outdated septic systems that don’t remove nitrogen from the water, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.newsday.com/long-island/suffolk/suffolk-sewer-tax-pqshdpq1">Newsday reported</a>. Excess nitrogen in the water supply — which also comes from fertilizer runoff — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.usgs.gov/special-topics/water-science-school/science/nitrogen-and-water#:~:text=Too%20much%20nitrogen%2C%20as%20nitrate,oxygen%20transport%20in%20the%20bloodstream.">can be dangerous to consume</a> and disrupts ecological systems, causing harmful phenomena like algae blooms that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nature.org/en-us/about-us/where-we-work/united-states/new-york/stories-in-new-york/long-island-water-quality/what-is-nitrogen-pollution-/">poison wildlife, plants, and people</a>.The county's traditional septic systems and cesspits are designed to allow treated sewage to safely seep into the ground soil, but when tanks aren't regularly emptied, the water table is high, or the system floods, untreated sewage pollutes nearby water.The most common reason local elected officials cite for not upgrading their wastewater management is cost. Even in a county where the median household income is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/suffolkcountynewyork/PST045223">almost $50,000 more</a> than the national average, policymakers say they simply can’t afford it. Last summer, the Republican members of the county’s legislature <a target="_blank" href="https://www.eastendbeacon.com/suffolk-legislature-doesnt-act-on-water-quality-referendum/">squashed an effort</a> to slightly increase the county’s sales tax to pay for sewer upgrades.But there's still hope for the effort. Earlier this month, Suffolk County’s recently elected executive, Ed Romaine, backed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.newsday.com/long-island/politics/suffolk-sewer-tax-crwu1gkt?utm_source=pocket_saves">a similar measure</a> raising the sales tax to fund the sewer system and individual septic tanks. In December, New York Governor Kathy Hochul <a target="_blank" href="https://www.newsday.com/long-island/politics/hochul-sewer-water-contamination-xj3qxmd3">announced</a> she'll send $59 million to Long Island to deal with water contamination and sewer upgrades.Romaine, a Republican, made housing affordability central to his agenda while campaigning and says he needs more state and federal funding to pay for the sewer and other infrastructure projects.“The governor has said she wants to see more housing on Long Island. Great, governor, you’ve got to give us money for sewage because the type of housing you want, we can't build,” he said, adding that he supported President Joe Biden’s <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-signs-infrastructure-law-social-spending-plan-struggles-2021-11">bipartisan infrastructure bill</a>. “How about some of that money? Why should Long Island get shortchanged?”Edmund Smyth, the town supervisor of Huntington, Suffolk County, said he’d like to see the federal government commit billions of dollars to expanding and upgrading sewer lines and treatment plants across the US to protect the water supply and boost development.“If the governor's plan requires the town to adopt certain housing policies, and that doesn't come with a very large infrastructure check along with it,” Smyth said, “there's nothing to talk about.”<h2>Long Islanders can't afford to live where they grew up</h2>Anti-development NIMBYism is rampant across Long Island, and its eastern half is no exception. Suffolk County has allowed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2023-08-15/nassau-county-in-new-york-and-florida-show-importance-of-housing-costs?embedded-checkout=true">less new housing to be built</a> over the last 10 years than almost any other county in the US. It also has a higher proportion of single-family homes than nearly any other county — more than 80% of its homes are detached, single-family houses.Last year, Long Island public officials led the charge against Gov. Kathy Hochul’s effort to boost housing construction around transit hubs, end single-family zoning, and other measures to encourage development, particularly in the New York City suburbs. Last summer, opponents of allowing accessory dwelling units, like basement apartments, in Huntington <a target="_blank" href="https://nysfocus.com/2023/07/27/huntington-long-island-housing-new-york">warned against</a> “changing the complexion of this beautiful community” and bringing in “migrants, pedophiles, or criminals.”But many residents, including homeowners who’ve benefited from soaring home values, are feeling the pain of the housing affordability crisis and want change. Businesses are <a target="_blank" href="https://suffolktimes.timesreview.com/2022/03/the-north-forks-affordable-housing-crisis-has-reached-new-extremes/">struggling to attract workers</a>, who can’t find decent housing. Baby boomers <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/24/opinion/long-island-housing.html">are concerned</a> their own children and grandchildren can’t afford to live in the communities they grew up in.“We're creating a lot of jobs here, but that's not going to continue if we don't have places to live for the people who have those jobs,” said Ian Wilder, executive director of the nonprofit group Long Island Housing Services. “The only thing we're creating is a market in illegal and, some of it, dangerous housing because people have no choice about where to live.”<h2>Sewers tie into a long history of exclusionary housing policy</h2>Like many similar suburban regions, Long Island has a long history of enforcing racial segregation through housing policies. Levittown, the famous master-planned 1950s suburb designed for WWII veterans, <a target="_blank" href="https://projects.newsday.com/long-island/levittown-demographics-real-estate/#:~:text=Levittown's%20restrictive%20racial%20covenant%20read,domestic%20servants%20shall%20be%20permitted.%E2%80%9D">excluded Black residents</a>. In 1988, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/1988/11/08/nyregion/li-town-focus-of-housing-bias-ruling-reflects-many-in-the-new-york-region.html">Supreme Court found</a> in a landmark case that the town of Huntington perpetuated racial discrimination with zoning laws that prohibited multi-family housing construction in largely white neighborhoods. While civil rights laws have since changed, the county is still one of the most segregated in the US. In 2019, Newsday published <a target="_blank" href="https://projects.newsday.com/long-island/real-estate-agents-investigation/#open-paywall-message">a three-year investigation</a> finding that residential real estate brokers and agents regularly discriminated against Black, Hispanic, and Asian clients. Infrastructure is just as key to expanding the housing stock as land-use laws are. Sewers and zoning are “two sides of the same coin,” said Nathan Cummings, a law clerk who <a target="_blank" href="https://yalelawandpolicy.org/sites/default/files/YLPR/4_cummings_pe_11.28.22.pdf">published a paper</a> in the Yale Law &amp; Policy Review in 2022 on wastewater treatment and urban development. You can’t change land-use laws to allow for more density when the sewer capacity isn’t there, and you can’t build out the sewer system when the land-use laws don’t allow for more density.“It's very easy for local policymakers to fall into a trap where they say we can't upzone because we don't have infrastructure and we can’t build infrastructure because our zoning doesn't permit anything above a certain level of development,” Cummings said. “If you want to build more densely, it's a two-step process where you do both and ultimately what it takes is the political will.”The connection between anti-sewer and anti-housing activism isn’t limited to Long Island. Similar communities, like Old Lyme, Connecticut, have been accused of <a target="_blank" href="https://insideinvestigator.org/everything-flows-downhill/">blocking wastewater projects</a> in order to stymie denser housing construction and prevent lower-income people or people of color from moving into a community.Alarm bells go off for Cummings in cases where a community’s water is being contaminated by waste and it refuses both to build out its sewer system or install an alternative wastewater treatment system. “If you don't want either of those things, even as your groundwater is getting polluted, and you're having to pay the upkeep cost for your septic system, it just starts to look a little bit less rational,” he said.<h2></h2>

My wife, two boys, and I track in plenty of grime, snow, and mud. We have mats by the doors, but those can only do so much, especially since we aren't a "shoes off" house. I've found that robotic vacuums can't get caked-on dirt no matter how powerful their suction is. Fortunately, several brands now offer units with mop attachments.One such brand is Roborock. The Beijing-based company was founded in 2014 and focuses exclusively on robotic vacuums. All three S5 models have a unique dustbin that is accessed from the top under the lid, as opposed to the bottom of the vac like most other brands, which can also cause a mess if you're not careful.The vacuum itself is 13.5 inches in diameter with a height of four inches. This is a bit higher than most, which can make it hard to squeeze under furniture with a lower clearance. The mop attachment is sleek and attaches to the unit without needing adjustments. The installation guide makes this process effortless. You do need to be careful that you get the right app though since the app's name is different from the brand name. It's called "Mi Home," which continues to confuse me when I try to access my Roborock's settings on my phone. Otherwise, after letting the S5 charge overnight, it was ready to clean.<h2>What makes it stand out</h2>The Mi Home app has a lot of useful tools. I like to set my robotic vacuum to run every day at a certain time so I can forget about it until it's time to empty the dustbin, and the app made it easy to schedule. You can also set the cleaning mode you want; the four modes in order of strongest cleaning to lightest are max, turbo, balanced, and quiet. There is also a mop mode, which is useful if you have stuck-on gunk.When the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0792BWMV4/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=biip_041219_roborock-s5-robotic-vacuum-and-mop-cleaner-review-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B0792BWMV4&amp;linkId=6f8a9250bb5e51fa2020e2e7db3f4380" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Roborock S5</a> creates a map of your house, you can use the app to label your rooms, designate "no-go" zones, and set up cleanings in specific areas. The app also tells you how much battery power is left so you know when to charge and when you can start it up again. I also liked that you can access the cleaning history, which is a very unique feature. I like to test the quality of a robotic vacuum by laying out kitty litter, coffee grounds, and flour on both hardwood flooring and low-pile carpeting, run the vac, and see how much of each is left. When I did this test, the kitty litter and coffee grounds were completely gone on both surfaces. The flour was removed from the hardwood and I'd estimate the vacuum picked up about 97% of the flour from the carpeting. I used flour again to see how far into corners the vac could get on the two surfaces, and on both, it came within an inch of the corner, which is fairly average.I also put a sound meter 12 inches away from the vacuum when it was running on quiet mode and got a reading of 70 decibels, which is similar to a shower or dishwasher. This was quiet enough that I could keep it running while teleconferencing without fear of it drowning out my voice.The robot vac is easy to clean and maintain. There's a cleaning tool located under the lid next to the dustbin that helps clear debris out of the filter, and cut hair and other gunk wrapped around the brush. I also like that you can easily clean the dustbin and filter by filling the dustbin with water and shaking it up. The vacuum comes with a replacement mop cloth, filter, and four extra water tank filters. But for me, it did clean the best compared to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/neato-robotics-botvac-d7-connected-robot-vacuum-review" target="_blank" rel="noopener">other models I've tested</a>. However, it's not perfect. After about a month of use, the vacuum started to make a high-pitched squeaking sound as it rolled around - I discovered it was the front wheel. I cleaned the easy-to-remove wheel and sprayed it with WD-40, which solved the problem. Since then, it hasn't squeaked at all.In my office, I have a large rubber exercise mat. Between the mat and the wall, there is an eight-inch wide gap of hardwood flooring. For some reason, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0792BWMV4/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=biip_041219_roborock-s5-robotic-vacuum-and-mop-cleaner-review-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B0792BWMV4&amp;linkId=6f8a9250bb5e51fa2020e2e7db3f4380" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the S5</a> would almost always get stuck on the edge of the mat. I eventually made the gap a no-go zone for the vacuum, but I'd much prefer for it to clean that eight-inch strip of floor. Other than that, the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0792BWMV4/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=biip_041219_roborock-s5-robotic-vacuum-and-mop-cleaner-review-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B0792BWMV4&amp;linkId=6f8a9250bb5e51fa2020e2e7db3f4380" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Roborock</a> did an excellent job of not getting caught up on obstacles. It completed its cleaning cycle without a hitch about 75% of the time, even though there were plenty of toys and clothes strewn about to trip it up.<h2>The bottom line</h2>Overall, I was impressed with the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0792BWMV4/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=biip_041219_roborock-s5-robotic-vacuum-and-mop-cleaner-review-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B0792BWMV4&amp;linkId=6f8a9250bb5e51fa2020e2e7db3f4380" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Roborock S5</a>. It did a better job of picking up dirt and dust than any robotic vacuum I've tested so far. I like that it has a mop attachment that took the cleaning one step further too. And the Mi Home app has several useful features that function as intended.
