The company also claims to be the world's largest manufacturer of industrial robots.Amazon has a whole bunch of robots with unusual names that it uses in its operations. Robotic arms Robin and Sparrow were designed and <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/ajassy/status/1709565753777922155">manufactured</a> at its Robotics Innovation Hub near Boston and help sort customer orders.Then there are robots Proteus and Hercules, which move and look like the robot vacuum Roomba and shift items such as containers. Its robotic system called Sequoia lifts and sorts containers and eases the strain on employees to bend and stretch, Amazon Robotics' chief technologist Tye Brady <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lIdVQbDmXM&amp;t=4s">told</a> NBC's "Today."The company also <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-amazon-warehouse-robot-humanoid-2023-10">started testing Agility Robotics' humanoid robot</a> called Digit in warehouses last year.The expansion shows Amazon is bullish on robots, and it's a bet that seems to be paying off.The company <a target="_blank" href="https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/operations/amazon-introduces-new-robotics-solutions">says</a> Sequoia helps identify and store inventory 75% faster and reduces the time needed to process orders by up to a quarter. At its Robotics sites, recorded incident rates and lost-time incident rates (how often injuries occur at work and the rate it's resulted in time away from work) were down 15% and 18%, respectively, in 2022 compared with non-Robotics sites.Robots have been talked up by robotics firms as a solution to help ease labor shortages and perform <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/humanoid-robots-jobs-manufacturing-tech-workforce-data-2023-12">"the dull, the dirty, and the dangerous"</a> tasks, as Apptronik CEO Jeff Cardenas previously told Business Insider. Amazon's robot army is still significantly smaller than its employee total, which stood at 1.525 million full-time and part-time workers at the end of last year, per its annual report. However, the company has been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-job-cuts-aws-roles-cloud-computing-division-aws-2024-4">cutting jobs</a> in its cloud division, Amazon Web Services, this year.Agility Robotics president Damion Shelton previously told BI that its robots are intended to complement and elevate the productivity of workers.Stefano La Rovere, director of global robotics, mechatronics, and sustainable packaging at Amazon, told CNBC that "robots and technology help our employees … by reducing walking distance between assignments, by taking away repetitive motions, or helping them to lift heavy weights."And despite fears that robots and technology could replace workers, the opposite has been true, La Rovere told the outlet: "Over the last years, more than 700 new categories of jobs have been created by the use of technology."Amazon didn't respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

The robot was built to be automatically directed to perform its work and move around employees and does not need to be confined to restricted areas. "It can operate in a manner that augments simple, safe interaction between technology and people, such as the lifting and movement of GoCarts, the non-automated, wheeled transports used to move packages through our facilities," Amazon said in a statement. Proteus will initially be deployed in the outbound GoCart handling areas in Amazon fulfillment centres and sort centres. The aim is to automate GoCart handling throughout the network, which will help reduce the need for people to manually move heavy objects. Amazon have more than 520,000 robotic drive units, and have added over a million jobs, worldwide. Amazon will also add Cardinal, a robotic arm capable of lifting weights up to 50 pounds. The company aims to deploy the robotic arms in its warehouses sometime next year. "With Cardinal, package sorting happens earlier in the shipping process, resulting in faster process time in the facility. Amazon shipping operations run more smoothly because Cardinal converts batch-based manual work into continuous, automated work," the company said. It had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazons-robot-army-has-grown-by-50-2017-1">45,000 robots across 20 fulfillment centers</a> back in 2017, Insider previously reported, and now says it has "750,000 robots working collaboratively with our employees."In June 2021, the company introduced a fleet of four <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-amazon-robots-warehouse-robots-reduce-warehouse-injuries-2021-6?r=US&amp;IR=T">robots named after characters from "Sesame Street" and "The Muppets,"</a> — Bert, Ernie, Scooter, and Kermit. A year later, Amazon introduced Proteus, a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-announces-first-fully-autonomous-warehouse-robot-2022-6">fully autonomous warehouse robot</a> which it said would operate alongside human employees, unlike its regular robots that only operate in a caged area away from human workers. In November 2022, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-robot-arm-sparrow-replace-human-warehouse-workers-2022-11">Amazon introduced Sparrow</a>, a picking robot arm with a suction cup hand that's meant for handling individual items in the warehouse inventory.Unlike the company's other warehouse robots, Amazon says Digit is better designed to operate in spaces designed for humans. "Digit can move, grasp, and handle items in spaces and corners of warehouses in novel ways." Amazon said in an announcement on its <a href="https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/operations/amazon-introduces-new-robotics-solutions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">website</a>. "Our initial use for this technology will be to help employees with tote recycling, a highly repetitive process of picking up and moving empty totes once inventory has been completely picked out of them."<div type="image" title="Digit robot" height="1744" width="2326" msid="104589857" hostid="261"></div>Amazon has often promoted its robots as a way to improve employee safety and experience."We are passionate about technology that makes the work experience of our employees safer, easier, and less repetitive," Amazon says on its website. "Doing so gives our employees the time and opportunity to take a step back, look at how orders are moving though our sites, and find new ways to delight and serve our customers."But as the company builds out its fleet of robots, it's impossible to ignore the elephant in the room: Is the company doing so to eventually reduce its reliance on a human workforce?Workers were already worried when the Sparrow arm robot was rolled out last year — one warehouse worker told Insider that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-robot-arm-sparrow-replace-human-warehouse-workers-2022-11">it "will take my job"</a> after reading Amazon's description of the robot. In community forums, warehouse workers discussed the possibility that Sparrow might result in empty warehouses, with only small teams of human employees to repair the robots. Amazon has pushed back on these concerns, saying that its robots will only create new categories of jobs within the company.And it's still not clear whether robots will truly improve worker safety. One whistleblower report in 2020 from investigative journalism site Reveal included leaked internal data that showed that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/explosive-reveal-amazon-warehouse-injuries-report-2020-9?r=US&amp;IR=T">Amazon's robotic warehouses had higher injury rates</a> than warehouses that don't use robots — Amazon strongly refuted the report at the time, saying that the reporter was "misinterpreting data.""Company data shows that, in 2022, recordable incident rates and lost-time incident rates were 15% and 18% lower, respectively, at Amazon Robotics sites than non-robotics sites," Amazon says on its website.

The tech giant unveiled a robot on Thursday that's capable of identifying individual items that vary in shape, size, and texture. Sparrow can also pick these up via the suction cups attached to its surface and place them into separate plastic crates. Sparrow is the first robot Amazon has revealed of its kind and it has the potential to wipe out significant numbers of the company's warehouse workers. The arm can identify approximately 65% of Amazon's inventory, the company <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/11/10/amazon-introduces-robotic-arm-that-can-do-repetitive-warehouse-tasks.html">told</a> CNBC. Until now, this sort of sophisticated identification has been reserved for the company's human employees. "Working with our employees, Sparrow will take on repetitive tasks, enabling our employees to focus their time and energy on other things, while also advancing safety," the company said in a <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.aboutamazon.com%2Fnew%2Ftransportation%2Famazon-robot-sparrow-streamlines-order-fulfillment-process">post</a> announcing Sparrow on its site. "At the same time, Sparrow will help us drive efficiency by automating a critical part of our fulfillment process so we can continue to deliver for customers."It's not entirely clear how quickly Sparrow will be integrated into Amazon's warehouses. Many of the company's products are stored on mesh shelves, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-11-10/amazon-s-new-warehouse-robot-could-one-day-replace-humans">according</a> to Bloomberg, which are incompatible for robotic arms like Sparrow. However, Amazon has long been aiming to fully automate its warehouses, Bloomberg <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-11-10/amazon-s-new-warehouse-robot-could-one-day-replace-humans">reported</a>. The company also <a href="https://www.fool.com/earnings/call-transcripts/2022/04/28/amazon-amzn-q1-2022-earnings-call-transcript/">said</a> in its quarterly earnings call back in April that it had hired too many warehouse workers during the pandemic. In its post announcing Sparrow, the company <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.aboutamazon.com%2Fnew%2Ftransportation%2Famazon-robot-sparrow-streamlines-order-fulfillment-process">said</a> that it already relies on other avian-named robots to redirect packages to various locations in its warehouses. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Amazon showed off a new picking robot on Thursday, a major advancement on its current robotics capability.</li><li>Amazon envisions Sparrow one day taking over many of the roles in its fulfillment process currently performed by humans, according to a patent.</li></ul><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-ceo-andy-jassy-day-2-culture-first-year-ceo-2022-8">Amazon</a>'s newest robot could one day take the place of many human workers across its giant <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-warehouse-empire-impact-us-economy-workforce-2022-10">fulfillment network</a>, generating apprehension among some of the company's more than 750,000 US warehouse employees.The robot, called Sparrow, is Amazon's "first robotic system in our warehouses that can detect, select, and handle individual products in our inventory," a spokesperson said in a statement. Using AI, computer vision, and a suction-cup "hand," the robot is capable of handling around 65% of the products sold on Amazon's website before they are packaged, the company said at a technology expo where Sparrow was unveiled.The robot arm is currently deployed at one warehouse in Texas for testing, the spokesperson added. Amazon envisions a wider rollout as soon as next year.For now, Sparrow is being used "to consolidate inventory," the Amazon spokesperson said in a statement. "But the possible applications of this technology in our operations are much broader."<h2>'Manual effort can be redirected to other tasks'</h2>The scope of those ambitions is clear in a patent Amazon filed in 2020 describing some of the technology powering Sparrow. The patent envisioned Sparrow's suction-grip arm replacing human workers who "pick items from inventory, place items in totes, remove items from totes, place items into bins, remove items from bins, place items into boxes for shipping," the patent read. "As a result, manual effort can be redirected to other tasks."The robot's capabilities have sparked fears among some Amazon workers that Sparrow could leave them without work. Amazon employs more than 750,000 U.S. warehouse workers, many of them in the kind of picking and sorting roles that Sparrow is able to perform.Sparrow "will take my job," one Amazon warehouse worker said, after reading Amazon's description of the robot. The worker asked not to be identified out of fear of retaliation from Amazon. On social media forums for Amazon warehouse workers, users discussed the likelihood that Sparrow could leave warehouses "quiet," save for small teams of humans there to repair the robots.Amazon has pushed back on concerns that its robots will lead to a net loss in warehouse employment. The introduction of robots into Amazon's warehouses "created over 700 new categories of jobs that now exist within the company," the company wrote in a blog post Thursday announcing Sparrow. Amazon also runs an upskilling program, the Amazon Mechatronic and Robotics Apprenticeship, helping "employees learn new skills and pursue in-demand, technical maintenance roles," which are typically higher-paid.<h2>A debate over the impact on worker safety</h2>Amazon has also sought to cast Sparrow as an important improvement in worker safety. The robot will save human workers from many of the repetitive tasks that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/warehouse-injuries-amazon-chronic-pain-speed-risk-productivity-targets-employees-2022-10">can lead to debilitating musculoskeletal injuries</a>, the company said in its announcement Thursday. But to date, the relationship between worker safety and Amazon's existing robots has been more complicated. Amazon's roboticized warehouses have higher injury rates than the company's non-roboticized warehouses, according to <a href="https://revealnews.org/article/how-amazon-hid-its-safety-crisis/">internal Amazon injury data</a> obtained by the nonprofit newsroom Reveal in 2020. Workers and subsequent inspections by workplace safety regulators have found that robots – which never tire or take a break – make workers move so quickly their risk of injury can reach hazardous levels.Sparrow could similarly speed up the pace of work and lead to greater injuries in the warehouses where it's deployed, said Mohamed Mire Mohamed, who worked for five years at an Amazon warehouse in Minnesota and now helps organize workers there with the Awood Center, a local advocacy group."You can't compete with the robots," Mohamed said. "They want you to compete with the robots. They want all the employees to compete with them. But who can win against a robot?" The vast majority of Amazon's existing robots were built by Kiva Systems, which Amazon acquired in 2012, and propel shelves of merchandise to and from worker stations in warehouses. The company recently introduced a robot called <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmmEbYkYfHY" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Proteus</a> that can ferry merchandise and carts around the warehouse floor, and <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.aboutamazon.com%2Fnews%2Foperations%2F10-years-of-amazon-robotics-how-robots-help-sort-packages-move-product-and-improve-safety" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">two robot arms</a> that put merchandise onto pallets and carts.<h2>'These robots collapse'</h2>Some workers involved in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-polls-americans-labor-practices-unions-2022-10">union organizing efforts</a> at Amazon warehouses sought to downplay the possibility that Amazon's new generation of robots could dampen labor activism at the company."Everyone knows that Amazon wants to replace human labor with robots," said Ryan Brown, an Amazon worker and the president of the union Carolina Amazonians United for Solidarity &amp; Empowerment.
