Although AMD's earnings performed around the levels predicted by Wall Street analysts, stock prices dipped <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/chipmakers-amd-smci-super-micro-stock-auditor-earnings-report-guidance-2024-10">as much as 10%</a> Wednesday, reflecting investors' disappointment. He said several of his passengers faced flooding and destruction from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-helene-milton-tampa-florida-desantis-clean-disaster-dangerous-2024-10">Hurricane Helene</a> two weeks prior and were scrambling to return to their routines. Many brought their pets with them. Some didn't know if their homes would be standing the next day.After making landfall in Florida, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-milton-landfall-florida-housing-market-insurance-fema-2024-10">Hurricane Milton</a> caused at least 14 deaths and left millions without power. In the days preceding the storm, some Uber and Lyft drivers went from transporting beachgoers to helping residents flee their communities — before eventually fleeing themselves. But after Milton passed, five drivers told BI that inaccessible roads, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-milton-evacuation-empty-gas-station-full-hotels-gridlock-traffic-2024-10">a lack of gas</a>, and a suspended ride-hailing app prevented them from helping people and earning valuable income."I drove for several hours right after the storm, and there was not a single gas station open anywhere in St. Petersburg," said Sergey, 54, who asked to use his first name for fear of professional repercussions.From his 12 rides, Sergey made $129 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-uber-lyft-drivers-make-per-ride-2023-10">before expenses</a> and received one tip. His home is without power, and driving is his only source of income. However, his car only has three miles of gas left, and each day without earnings is stressful, he said.Many of his rides over the last few days were headaches — one paid $5.36 for a 16-minute ride, which he said compares to the amount he'd expect to make for a similar journey, while another was elongated because of closed exits. He rejected a 113.5-mile ride from Clearwater to Orlando because the estimated payout was $84.31 with a bonus, far less than what's standard, he said. They added that service has been restored in these metro areas but remains suspended along the most heavily impacted barrier islands.Additionally, the spokesperson told Business Insider the company worked closely with state officials in Florida over the past few weeks to assess the situation posed by the hurricanes and partnered with the Florida Division of Emergency Management to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mypanhandle.com/weather/hurricane-helene/uber-offers-free-rides-to-shelters-for-floridians/">provide</a> some people with free transportation to shelters.Lyft did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment or questions regarding whether the app also suspended service during the storm.<h2 id="928e9756-39a3-4d0c-ae87-72a989030640">The evacuation process was "stressful"</h2>Drivers across the state recalled panicked passengers, fallen trees blocking roads, and lengthy gas station lines on October 10 and 11.Trent T., 50, drives independently for his own transportation company and for Uber and Lyft in South Florida. He said the tornadoes from Milton were "absolutely insane," and one of his clients' homes was destroyed. He asked to use partial anonymity for fear of professional repercussions.On October 8, Trent said he went to six gas stations before he could find one with inventory and fill up his tank. On the day of the storm, Trent drove passengers fleeing the Tampa Bay area to hotels, noticing that many stores were out of essentials like water. He said hotels in South Florida were mobbed, and he offered his house to anyone evacuating, though no one accepted.Blaine, an Uber driver based in the Tampa area, left his home after learning he was in an evacuation zone. Hotels quickly booked up across the state, but he said he secured a room in Ocala — about a two-hour drive from Tampa.However, there was a mixup with the hotel regarding the night he booked, and his reservation was void. He drove to a hotel in Savannah, Georgia, to seek shelter. The typical five-and-a-half-hour drive from Tampa took eight hours due to traffic, he said."That was stressful," the 57-year-old told BI.<h2 id="f85e7843-407a-45c1-933d-6fe7144dfaae">Drivers are eager to return to their ride-hailing gigs for necessary income</h2>Trent said he can go a few days without consistent rides and their fares but feels for drivers who live paycheck to paycheck. He said the storm could be disastrous for some drivers relying on tourism this time of year, which isn't as high as the city's peak season but still draws crowds looking for warm weather in the fall."If you were in Tampa for instance, and your rent is due this week, and now all of a sudden the storm is coming, you're five days without work," Trent said.It's why some drivers are looking to get back on the road as soon as possible.Yvonne, a part-time <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/driving-uber-lyft-women-drivers-how-make-money-gig-economy-2023-12">Uber and Lyft driver</a> in the Tampa Bay area, uses the extra income from driving to help support her two grandchildren. When the hurricane approached, she said she decided not to leave her home because it wasn't in an evacuation zone. However, the roof of her patio suffered significant damage and she lost power.She hasn't driven for Uber or Lyft since the hurricane hit. Yvonne said the roads aren't conducive to driving because many are flooded or scattered with trees or power lines. However, if the conditions change, she plans to return to her ride-hailing gig by this weekend to start earning money again.Charles P., 44, who drives part-time around Titusville — a city about 40 miles east of Orlando — said there wasn't too much damage on the roads, but he stopped driving for a few days to avoid potentially damaging his vehicle. He's seen a drop in demand and worries that tourism may decline. When he drove on Thursday, he said getting rides was very slow."I usually try to do a certain amount of money per day, but I'm probably down about half of what I normally do in three days," Charles said. Flooded roads, worried passengers, and no income: Florida Uber and Lyft drivers share their experiences on the road before and after Hurricane Milton

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The economy is at a decisive moment, and Friday's jobs report may provide answers.</li><li>The last jobs report brought an unpleasant surprise when unemployment jumped up, causing the stock market to plunge.</li></ul>Friday's jobs report is a big one.That's because the US economy is at a critical point. The next batch of data could be a key indicator of whether the economy is sticking the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recession-prediction-soft-landing-goldman-sachs-us-economy-volatility-inflation-2024-8">soft landing or heading into a recession</a>.It'll also point toward how big the nation's central bank will go <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/interest-rate-cuts-wall-street-how-much-jackson-hole-fed-2024-8">on interest rate cuts</a> in its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/interest-rate-cuts-likely-september-federal-reserve-holds-steady-july-2024-7">September 18 meeting</a>. While it's looking almost certain that the rate cuts Americans have been hoping for will finally happen, the question is how deep those cuts will go.So let's paint two scenarios, based on Friday's report, and both come down to one number.If the unemployment rate spikes again — as it did in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unemployment-rate-job-growth-july-labor-market-economic-data-2024-7">July's report </a>— the stock market could plunge, mirroring what happened after that unwelcome surprise. Unemployment above July's 4.3% could indicate that the jobs market is in even more dire straights and the chances of a coming recession could go higher. Additionally, the Fed could decide to cut rates even deeper than the expected 25-basis-point cut.On the other hand, if unemployment dips to 4.2% or below, it could be an indication that July's shockingly large increase was a blip and the job market isn't on a steep decline. The Fed could announce a 25-basis-point cut — the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">most likely scenario</a>, according to market predictions — which will mean that while the economy is cooling, it doesn't need drastic intervention on its way to a soft landing.The upcoming jobs report will clarify which of those two roads the Fed thinks we're on."It's really an opportunity for them to focus on the labor market and make sure that they are not inducing a more dramatic slowdown," Aaron Terrazas, chief economist at Glassdoor, told Business Insider.<h2 id="055a6f9d-c7c2-49a7-9322-c744c1fa5d7d">A golden path or Recessionland</h2>The Federal Reserve has held steady on interest rates for around a year — a decision called into question after July's disappointing jobs report.The Fed will likely be using the upcoming data to determine whether July's weak employment numbers persist and are indicative of a recession or if that was just a bump in the road and the economy can carry on into the coveted soft landing."We've got to be thinking about where will we need to be to pull off what I call the golden path, which is to get inflation down from these epic heights to something like our target without having a serious recession," Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee told BI. "And so far, we did that in 2023. This looks like a little bit of that magic dust. It has carried over into 2024, but there's weakening on the labor market side and so we've got to be attentive."Still, a 50-basis-point cut isn't guaranteed even if Friday's job gain and unemployment rate data are weak."I think the Fed will want to avoid being seen as excessively data-point dependent so that there would need to be a significant degree of weakness, very low payroll growth, or potentially a decline, and an increase in the unemployment rate for policymakers to suggest 50 basis points as the first rate cut," Gregory Daco, the chief economist of EY, told BI.While the size of a rate cut is in question, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/interest-rate-cuts-are-coming-federal-reserve-jackson-hole-powell-2024-8">all but confirmed an interest-rate cut</a> in September during his keynote speech at Jackson Hole last month and indicated that the Fed will be closely watching the incoming jobs data, saying that "the inflation and labor-market data show an evolving situation. The upside risks to inflation have diminished. And the downside risks to employment have increased."July's unemployment rate of 4.3% was the highest since October 2021. A slight dip in this rate is expected for August, the forecast on <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.investing.com/economic-calendar/unemployment-rate-300">Investing.com</a> showed, and job growth is expected to tick up.Terrazas said the question among economists right now is just how big of a cut the jobs report could prompt."If we do get a weak report, then I think 50 basis points is very clearly on the table," Terrazas said.David Kelly, J.P. Morgan Asset Management's chief global strategist, thinks the Fed will cut rates in September and December — both times being 25 basis point cuts."A payroll gain of less than 100,000 or a rise in the unemployment rate to 4.4% or above would make a 50 basis point cut in September likely," Kelly told BI in a statement about the upcoming labor market report.New data out Wednesday from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed job openings fell for the second straight month in July, and the number of hires increased slightly."If we continue to get labor market data like today's report, then the pace of cutting is likely to be quick," Nick Bunker, economic research director for North America at the Indeed Hiring Lab, said on Wednesday. "Hopefully, the labor market can level off and a more deliberate pace of cuts can be undertaken. But the underlying trends in the data suggest that might not be the reality."The Fed likely will also be considering the path of inflation as it decides how much to cut rates. Inflation has cooled and is now hovering just a little above the Fed's 2% target. New consumer price index data, an inflation measure, will be released before the FOMC meeting.Inflation and the labor market have both cooled, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-unemployment-interest-rates-economy-recession-soft-landing-2024-8">but the much-sought soft landing could be in trouble</a>. A recession isn't here either — even if some widely followed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sahm-rule-recession-unemployment-federal-reserve-interest-rates-cut-2024-8">recession indicators</a> have started to sound the alarm."I think the US economy is softening but not soft," Daco said.Goolsbee also emphasized the importance of looking at the data over time rather than a single point, and he noted that even if the Fed does start cutting rates this year, "the mission of the central bank is never done.""There is no declaring mission accomplished," he said. "There will definitely be difficulties and obstacles, and we may encounter major challenges, such as strong winds, high waves, or even violent storms."Xi was speaking on the 75th anniversary of the People's Republic of China, using the occasion to promote his regular messages, such as modernizing the country and absorbing Taiwan under Beijing's rule.However, he didn't mention the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-economy-stimulus-chinese-stocks-rally-market-outlook-investing-strategy-2024-9">wide range of stimulus efforts</a> that his government unveiled on Tuesday. And that was on top of the major headwinds in China's already ailing property market.Barclays analysts estimated earlier this month that the households there lost a combined <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/23/business/china-dupe-economy-hnk-intl/index.html#:~:text=%E2%80%9CUnlike%20the%20huge%20positive%20wealth,a%20September%2012%20research%20note.">$18 trillion in wealth</a>, averaging about $60,000 per three-person household. Even Xi Jinping admits China has a painful road ahead despite his new stimulus

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A couple in North Carolina were caught in a landslide caused by heavy rain from Hurricane Helene.</li><li>Their house and livelihoods were destroyed, and Lindsay Thomas left unable to walk.</li></ul>On the morning of Friday, September 27, Andrew Marsh and Lindsay Thomas were at their home — one of a few lodges scattered along a winding mountain road in Marion, North Carolina — drinking coffee with two neighbors and waiting for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/before-after-satellite-photos-hurricane-helene-destruction-florida-2024-10">Hurricane Helene</a> to pass.They lived in the 500-mile stretch of the US that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-helene-hits-asheville-beer-microbreweries-north-carolina-floods-2024-9">Helene would roll through,</a> including parts of Florida, North and South Carolina, and Tennessee. But the couple weren't worried; they knew a storm was coming, but hadn't been told to evacuate because their home was on high ground in the Blue Ridge Mountains.Still, they had <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-helene-slams-florida-power-outages-flooding-2024-9">prepared for flooding</a> and had enough food, supplies, and a generator to survive for one or two weeks "if it got really bad," Marsh, a 34-year-old metalworker, told Business Insider.But they didn't know that several days of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quartz-mine-computer-chips-hurricane-helene-spruce-pine-semiconductor-2024-9">heavy rain from Hurricane Helene</a> had weakened the soil on the mountain, triggering a landslide that was headed straight down toward their home.Marsh and Thomas were thrown down the mountain by a wave of sliding earth, rocks, and trees that onlookers estimated was 40 to 60 feet high, destroying their home and livelihoods in a matter of seconds.The debris crushed Thomas, dislocating her legs and leaving her unable to walk. Marsh had "at least 50" flesh wounds and couldn't use his right hand because it was sliced open down to the muscle, he said.<h2 id="9ce482e9-d9f9-495f-9341-3326f5a4784f">Helene is estimated to have caused up to $34 billion worth of damage</h2>Since Helene made landfall, at least 215 people have been confirmed dead, making it the second deadliest hurricane in the US in recent years, after Katrina in 2005.On Monday, Moodys estimated the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/analysts-estimate-up-to-34-billion-damage-from-hurricane-helene-2024-10">hurricane caused between $20 billion and $34 billion</a> worth of damage, with between $15 billion to $26 billion affecting properties alone.As the Federal Emergency Management Agency <a target="_blank" href="https://www.floodsmart.gov/get-flood-insurance">estimates</a> that only 4% of homeowners in the US have flood insurance, and those who do <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-helene-north-carolina-flood-insurance-2024-10">might not be covered</a> for flooding or landslides, this looks to be an expensive disaster for many.Marsh and Thomas, 40, a yoga teacher and masseuse, will be <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-flood-damage-rescue-helene-asheville-north-carolina-us-2024-10">dealing with the aftermath</a> long after Thomas is discharged from hospital. The couple told Business Insider they will have to rebuild their lives and careers from scratch, all while paying off medical bills, trying to claim home insurance, and dealing with the psychological fallout.<div type="image" title="The hands of Lindsay Thomas (top) and Andrew Marsh (bottom) holding hands with bandages and a cannula in." height="1188" width="1586" msid="113943321" hostid="261" sizebytes="97044"></div>Stories like Marsh and Thomas' are only going to become more common as the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/safe-places-for-climate-change-vermont-floods-2023-7">climate crisis brings more rain</a>, and with it landslides to vulnerable areas, researchers concluded in a 2016 paper published in Earth-Science Reviews.Natural disasters have already cost the US in a big way: between 1980 and 2021, the country spent $2 trillion on both immediate and longer-term restoration such as repairing infrastructure, a 2023 article published in The Journal of Climate Change and Health found.<h2 id="d4f10174-5a8d-4ae9-8084-14331ab8ba28">'Mud and water was being pressed into my nose, ears, and mouth'</h2>Just before 10 a.m., the couple heard a "deep rumbling" and "loud cracking thunder-like noises" a few hundred yards from their home, Thomas said, before the ground dropped out from beneath their feet."It happened so fast that there was no chance of reacting. The best way I've been able to describe it is as if somebody just threw the house into a blender and hit the puree button," Marsh said.Thomas added: "I just fell down and down. They didn't know where Norwood's fiancé, Julie le Roux, was, and he "wandered off" to try to find her, Marsh said. She was still missing as of October 3.Marsh found an empty Airbnb property about 250 yards away and helped Thomas limp into it. There, they were able to do some basic first aid about three hours after the landslide.Norwood showed up after two hours, "covered head to toe in wounds," he said.Then, at about 4 p.m., six hours after the landslide, they spotted a rescue worker across a 50-foot-wide flow of runoff. "The shortcomings that we observed make it challenging to imagine what TSLA will reveal in its RoboTaxi event in October."Stein tested a new Model Y with FSD V12.3.6 with the same start and end points as the last drive in suburban New York. Stein said the weather was clear and dry, which also matched the conditions of the last drive.Stein flagged Tesla's "demo mode" as one of the surprising features, which is only available during demo drives. Stein said during the first half of the drive that he didn't have to tug on the steering wheel to keep the system engaged. Stein said he even turned his head away from the road to test it further and the system continued for as long as 40 seconds before it issued a warning."At 60MPH, this would be a stunning half mile of no-hands and no-eyes autonomy," Stein wrote in the letter, adding that in " this stretch of the highway it seemed safe enough, but in other places, it would have surely caused an accident."Stein said he also had to make three interventions during the ride. The first one occurred when the Tesla accelerated through an intersection even though the car hadn't completed a right turn yet. Stein said the intervention prevented "an otherwise certain accident."Stein said the second intervention happened when a police officer used hand motions to ask him to pull to the side of the road to allow other vehicles to pass. The third intervention happened when the vehicle switched lanes despite a solid white line signaling not to change.Despite these concerning instances, Stein said the experience wasn't all bad. Stein said he was impressed by how well the car adapted to challenging disruptions like lane closures or heavy potholes. He also noted the newer FSD was more active in switching lanes, and the drive "felt more natural overall" than the previous version.However, he maintained that "solving" may not be the right word for autonomy. Bajaj Auto working on CNG bike, to hit road in June: MD

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The National Park Service shut down an 8-mile section of the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. </li><li>The road was shut down after reports of people trying to hold and feed a young bear.</li></ul>The National Park Service had to shut down an eight-mile section of North Carolina's Blue Ridge Parkway after multiple reports of people trying to hold and feed a young bear."We are closing this section of the road temporarily for the safety of both the bear and park visitors," Superintendent Tracy Swartout said in a <a href="https://www.nps.gov/blri/learn/news/eight-mile-section-of-the-blue-ridge-parkway-near-asheville-nc-temporarily-closed-due-to-human-and-bear-interactions.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">news release from the NPS</a>. "When people intentionally attract bears with trash and food it can lead to very dangerous situations. In this instance we want to give the bear a chance to lose interest in the area before the situation escalates and visitors or the bear are harmed."The news release said there have been "multiple documented reports of visitors feeding and attempting to hold a young bear in recent weeks" at the parkway's Lane Pinnacle Overlook.The release said that fall is a crucial time for bears because they're preparing for hibernation."Between September and November bears may forage for food up to 20 hours a day as they attempt to put on weight for the winter and hibernation," it said. "During this time bears actively seek out natural foods but will also take advantage of human foods when presented with the opportunity."The eight-mile stretch of the parkway was shut down starting on Monday and will be closed until further notice, the NPS said.<a href="https://www.newsweek.com/highway-shut-park-visitors-feeding-bear-1839651" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Newsweek reported</a> that the young bear mentioned in the NPS' release was likely a black bear, adding that North Carolina does not have any grizzly bears and is home to approximately 15,000 black bears.Insider has reached out to NPS for comment.
