If you thought <keyword id="21135616" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="flying-cars" source="keywords">flying cars</keyword> were a distant fantasy or belonged only to the realm of Harry Potter, we have some news for you! The American state of <keyword id="20120516" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Minnesota" source="keywords">Minnesota</keyword> has taken a step closer to making them a reality of the present, as it is set to formally recognise flying cars as a legitimate category of vehicles allowed to use its roads.<br /><br />In a foresightful move, <keyword id="21773690" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Minnesota-Governor" source="Orion">Minnesota Governor</keyword> <keyword id="4300994" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tim-Walz" source="Orion">Tim Walz</keyword> recently signed a bipartisan transportation bill package into law. This legislation includes a provision for <keyword id="21773686" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="roadable-aircraft" source="keywords">roadable aircraft</keyword> — essentially flying cars.<br /><br />Key regulations within the bill outline the process for state registration of these roadable aircraft, thus paving the way for their use on Minnesota’s roads and highways.<br /><br />Under the new legislation, drivers of roadable aircraft must follow the same traffic rules as other vehicles, including cars, trucks, bicycles and motorcycles. This will ensure that flying cars, despite their dual capabilities, are integrated safely into existing traffic systems without causing disruptions or hazards.<br /><br />Minnesota is the second American state to pass such legislation. New Hampshire was the first to pass a law for state registration of roadable aircraft back in 2020. It was aptly named the ‘<keyword id="21773689" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jetson-Bill" source="Orion">Jetson Bill</keyword>’, after the iconic cartoon series.<br /><br /><keyword id="21773687" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samson-Sky" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Samson Sky" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Samson Sky">Samson Sky</keyword>, the company behind the <keyword id="807717" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Switchblade" source="Orion">Switchblade</keyword> flying sports car, has been advocating for states to pass laws permitting flying cars to legally operate on roads, enabling them to reach airports for takeoff. This would be a crucial step for the practical use of flying cars, bridging the gap between traditional road travel and air travel.<br /><br />Looking ahead, two US companies, Samson Sky and Alef, along with two European companies, Pal-V and Klein, are set to begin production of flying cars by 2025. These companies are at the forefront of what could become a revolutionary shift in how we think about personal transportation.<br /><br />The inclusion of flying cars in Minnesota’s legislative framework reflects a broader trend of innovation in transportation. As technology advances, the integration of roadable aircraft could lead to reduced traffic congestion, shorter travel times, and new opportunities for urban planning and development. Yet.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Not content to remake the taxi business, Uber now wants to take ride-sharing to a whole new level. A <em>vertical </em>level.</p><p><a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-02-06/uber-hires-veteran-nasa-engineer-to-develop-flying-cars">As Bloomberg's Brad Stone reported</a>, Uber has hired a NASA researcher, to crack the flying-car challenge. Moore was already a player in the whole Silicon Valley dream of flying cars, having written a paper that got Google Larry Page into the idea via several investments.</p><p>According to Stone: "Moore is leaving the confines of the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration, where he has spent the last 30 years, to join one of Google's rivals: Uber Technologies Inc. Moore is taking on a new role as director of engineering for aviation at the ride-hailing company, working on the company's flying car initiative, known as "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-elevate-flying-cars-2016-10">Uber Elevate</a>."</p><p>The idea isn't as implausible as it might sound at first. Uber wants to use the electric-powered, short-rage flying-cars, which could take off and land vertically, to connect ground-based Uber rides. </p><p>So what Uber is really aiming for her is a way to enhance and accelerate its existing service, albeit in a truly blue-sky manner.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Screenshot via Terrafugia</span></p><p class="caption">The Terrafugia Transition.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Flying cars have stubbornly resisted becoming reality. Terrafugia, a Massachusetts-based startup, has with its Transition "roadable aircraft" developed a viable flying-car technology, but thus far, the company hasn't delivered any of the aircraft/vehicles.</p><p>Complicating matters is that Uber is now pushing for an aggressive self-driving car rollout - it has a fleet operating in Pittsburgh, and had the company not run afoul of California laws, it would also be testing prototypes in San Francisco (they were sent to Arizona).</p><p>Too many threads in a rapidly growing business suggest throwing spaghetti at the wall. The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ceo-google-invested-flying-car-larry-page-kitty-hawk-2017-4">latest broke cover this week</a> - it's produced by a Larry-Page-backed startup, modestly called "Kitty Hawk." (The Wright brothers are so stoked!)<p>There's just one problem: it isn't really a flying car. It's basically a drone with pontoons and some controls. Check it out in the photo above. Does that look like a flying car to you?</p><p>Here's a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-airbus-larry-page-invest-flying-cars-2017-4/#called-the-volocopter-2x-the-aircraft-has-18-rotors-and-can-fit-two-people-2">rundown</a> of all the buzzy "flying cars" that have been making news. There are some big names in there, including Airbus and Uber. But only two vehicles could properly be termed "flying cars" - because they can both fly and drive. </p><p>Including in our roundup is the company that's made the most progress on a proper flying car: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/terrafugia-could-have-flying-car-ready-in-2025-2016-8" target="_blank">Terrafugia</a>, a Massachusetts-based outfit that's been in the flying-car game for about a decade. I covered their progress when they first rolled out their Transition, a flying car that was destined to sell for a few hundred grand, that would run on regular gas, and that didn't require much flight training to operate. </p><p class="source"><span>Terrafugia</span></p><p class="caption">The Terrafugia Transition</p><p>The Transition was, strictly speaking, more of a "roadable aircraft" than a flying car - but at least it could be <em>driven like a car.</em> The idea was to provide people with a way to drive between the small airfields that dot the US landscape while covering greater distances in the air.</p><p>The Transition simply refined and extended the actually rather long history of inventors putting wings on cars. It's not a complicated principle: if you can attach a wing and a rudder to a car and figure out how to control the flight surfaces, physics will get you airborne and keep you up there. </p><p>The historic problem is obviously twofold: until Terrafugia came along, flying cars were usually adequate car and lousy planes. Even the Transition is a fairly awkward car. But at least is embodies the notion of <em>transformation. </em>This is how flying cars are meant to work - it's how they work in the movies! </p><p class="source"><span>ABC / Agents of SHIELD screencap</span></p><p class="caption">A real flying car, as imagined by television.</p><p>However, in the movies, we see a lot of vertical-takeoff flying cars, a daunting engineering challenge because cars have to be pretty heavy, while aircraft are supposed to be light. What works on land militates against what succeeds in the air.</p><p>From what I can tell, many of the so-called flying-car projects coming out of techtopia are vertical-takeoff-and-landing (VTOL) designs. And so in a quick cut-the-the-chase move, their creators have decided to skip the whole roadworthy aspect and gone straight to a car-as-metaphor angle, while preserving the romance of flying cars. So what we're seeing are personal VTOL contraptions that would function more as replacements for cars <em>and </em>planes. </p><p>They would fly everywhere and drive nowhere.</p><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szEFdhOHtrI">Warner Bros. But it's nothing new. For decades, you've been able to buy ultralight aircraft that require little in the way of pilot training to operate. Small helicopters and autogyros have also been around for ages. Nobody called them "cars" - because they aren't cars! And their creators and fans had humility!</p><p>Not so with the "flying car" frauds of Silicon Valley. They're either repackaging technologies that we've already seen or doing the drone-car mashup thing, surfing the lastest gadgety trend.</p><p>Somebody needs to put a stop to this, and that somebody is me. Silicon Valley needs to stop talking about flying cars

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Peter Thiel is wrong. His famous comment on the failed promise of the Internet - "We wanted flying cars, instead we got 140 characters" - is about to be upended as the first <em>actual</em> flying cars take to the roads, and the skies.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-11-24/car-that-flies-nears-liftoff-as-pioneer-touts-soaring-over-roads.html">Bloomberg reported </a>on the progress of the biggest name in the flying car business, Terrafugia, which is nearing the culmination of a decade-long effort to build, drive, fly, market and, yes, <em>sell</em> a flying cars to the dreamers who've always wanted one.</p>
<p>Okay, the <a href="http://www.terrafugia.com/aircraft/transition">Terrafugia Transition</a> is more of a "roadable airplane" than a flying car. But as Terrafugia founder <span>Carl Dietrich notes in the Bloomberg profile by Josh Dean, that's a market that's crying out to be served:</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The Transition is a versatile vehicle, as flying cars go. It runs on regular gas, can be parked in a regular garage, and provides the flexibility to fly when the weather is good and drive when it isn't, as Dean points out.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">At about $280,o0o, it's priced in the ballpark of some exotic supercars. So it could be a very cool toy, but there's also a business case: If you need to cover a lot of ground in a short period of time, the Transition unlocks America's underutilized network of small, regional airfields.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">So Thiel is right: We have had to get by with 140 characters of innovation, up to this point.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">But the flying cars we always wanted are finally coming. And if Thiel wants to get a "light sport aircraft" license and is willing put down a $10,000 deposit, he can both have one - and fly it.</span></p>
