Last year, transport minister Nitin Gadkari said that road accidents are “more serious than the COVID-19 pandemic," and this is corroborated by the data compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau. Over 1.55 lakh lives were lost in road crashes across India just in 2021, says a recent report by the NCRB. Most of these road accidents in India have happened on national highways. India accounts for about 2% of motor vehicles globally. Yet, it is the <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/india-accounts-for-11-per-cent-of-global-death-in-road-accidents-world-bank/article33834556.ece">home </a>to more than 11% of the world’s road traffic deaths. Now, after Mistry’s demise has sent shockwaves across the country, Gadkari said that even chief ministers don’t follow safety rules. Some ministers even use a clip so that the alarm does not make any sound, said Gadkari, when there is no belt. After the incident, Gadkari also said that the ministry is now working towards making six airbags compulsory in all cars. It was not too long ago, just in February 2022 that the Indian <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/auto/cars/govt-makes-three-point-seat-belts-mandatory-for-all-front-facing-passengers-in-car/articleshow/89501540.cms">government </a>had also made it mandatory for automakers to provide three-point seat belts for all front-facing passengers in a car, which is also applicable for the middle seat in the rear row of a car. It is also stated in the rules Motor Vehicles Act 138(3) that fastening seat belts is compulsory for passengers sitting in the front as well as the rear seats. However, India fails to follow the law of its land. As per a 2019 report by SaveLIFE Foundation, less than 1% of people in India use rear seat belts. 37.8% of all the people surveyed didn’t even know that any such legal compulsion existed. While 23.9% of people didn’t even know that rear seat belts existed. The centre has also made it compulsory for all cars to have six airbags across from October 1. After losing his ‘good friend,’ minister Gadkari said that all cars exported out of India have 6 airbags and asked then why Indian cars have only four airbags. What India can learn from other countries In 1997, Sweden adopted a ‘Vision Zero’ policy based on the idea that “no loss of life was acceptable.” The policy did not focus on changing human behaviour, the emphasis was on designing a better system of roads and other infrastructure, vehicle technology and enforcement. On the other hand, Singapore uses advanced warning lights that alert drivers about the upcoming signal and vehicle speed. <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/peterlyon/2020/08/27/frightening-consequences-for-drink-drivers-in-japan/">Japan </a>also has a strict policy for drunken drivers. It has a zero percent blood-alcohol level standard for drivers and individuals caught driving under the influence can face imprisonment for up to 15 years. In Switzerland, passengers travelling in the same car as a drunk driver are also considered liable and can lose their own licenses. Apart from strictly enforcing speed limits and other road regulations, Norway has found a unique approach to reduce its fatalities. It has made it mandatory for drivers to always have their headlights on while driving. Safety measures taken by automakers From installing airbags and adding stringent seatbelt alarms to running awareness campaigns, automakers have been trying to up safety for India’s car passengers. Maruti, Hyundai and Tata Motors offer six airbags across some models. Luxury car companies like Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Volvo are also offering six airbags and the number increases on the higher-end models. Safety rules you must follow To stay safe, one must <a href="https://highwaypolice.maharashtra.gov.in/en/road-safety-guideline/#:~:text=Always%20obey%20Road%20safety%20rules,as%20markets%20and%20residential%20areas.">obey </a><keyword id="1501776" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="road-safety-rules" source="Orion">road safety rules</keyword> and regulations of India. <ul><li>Look for the traffic signs before you cross signals. </li><li>Drive within the speed limits prescribed. Ideally one should drive at approximately not more than 30 kmph near busy places such as markets and residential areas.</li><li>Keep vehicle oiled and serviced. A sudden breakdown of the vehicle on the road can cause hardships not only to you but also to fellow drivers and traffic personnel. </li><li>Stop or slow down your vehicle and allow the pedestrians to crossroads at unmanned/signalled Zebra crossings.</li><li>Always wear seat belts while driving four-wheelers.</li><li>Avoid rash or negligent driving.</li><li>Do not drink and drive.</li><li>Avoid using mobile phones while driving. He sustained serious brain and spinal cord injuries, Bloomberg reported.Amazon has consistently argued it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-not-legally-responsible-for-delivery-related-deaths-contract-drivers-2019-9">cannot be held liable for crashes involving Amazon drivers</a> because it does not directly employ them. Amazon relies heavily on a network of smaller contracted delivery companies called Delivery Service Partners (DSPs).But in a lawsuit filed in June, Rana's lawyer argued that Amazon's monitoring tech "forced drivers to rush to the point it was unsafe," Bloomberg reported. New Delhi, Feb 19 () Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday reaffirmed India's commitment to the United Nation's goal set under the UN Decade of Action of drastically reducing road accidents by 2030. Road Transport and Highways Minister Gadkari was addressing the '3rd High Level Global Conference on Road Safety for Achieving Global Goals 2030' in Stockholm in Sweden, an official release said. "India is collaborating with stakeholders and other agencies who are assisting us by way of strengthening the capabilities of various institutions, enhancing awareness and improving our engineering designs for safer roads," the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said in a statement quoting Gadkari. The government is fully committed to the safety of citizens, the minister said, adding that a large number of pedestrians, cyclists and motorised two-wheelers compete for space on roads, therefore, the road safety requirements of these vulnerable sections needs to be kept in mind while designing and developing transport strategies.The minister pointed out that India is the largest producer of two wheelers and amongst largest manufacturer of cars in the world. Road accidents constitute the most important public health concern in the country that saw over 1.51 lakh fatalities in about 5 lakh road accidents in 2018 alone. "Eleven per cent of deaths due to road accident of the world take place in India alone. When translated into economic terms, estimates suggest that this has adversely affected our GDP by as much as 2-3 per cent per annum. Road accidents not only have an economic impact, but also serious implications for those involved in such crashes and their immediate families who suffer severe physical and psychological trauma as a result," he said. Gadkari said India has been undertaking various publicity measures to improve road safety awareness among the general public. The minister said India has the second largest road network in the world and the government has launched an ambitious programme for development and upgradation of roads in the country, especially the National Highways network. He said his Ministry has been working in association with States, and vehicle manufactures for strengthening driving training. Gadkari said the Motor Vehicles Act, has been amended for the first time in a comprehensive way after thirty years. He said he is confident that the Act will lead to several reforms ranging from road safety, citizen facilitation, transparency, and efficiency through the use of Information Technology. India is looking towards automated systems solutions using technology and having least human interface in its current licensing and fitness certificate regime, he said. NAM MRMR

New Delhi, May 6 () About 140 lives lost in over 600 road accidents over the course of the two phases of the nationwide lockdown between March 24 and May 3, according to a report by SaveLIFE Foundation.Of this count, 30 per cent of the victims were migrant workers returning to their homes, said the report by the non-profit organisation, which works towards curbing road accidents in the country.The report said over-speeding on empty roads has emerged as one of the most common reasons for deaths across states. India accounts for one of the highest road crashes fatalities across the globe with annual 5 lakh accidents in which 1.5 lakh people are killed."The country recorded more than 600 road crashes over the course of the two phases of the nationwide lockdown (24th March till 14th April and 14th April to 3rd May)," as per data compiled by SaveLIFE Foundation.During the last five weeks, around 140 lives have been lost due to road crashes across the country, with over 100 deaths recorded in across 9 states alone, it said. "Further analysis of these road crash deaths reveals that around 30 per cent of these victims were migrants travelling back home. Almost 57 per cent of the deaths were of people driving during the lockdown. The most common causal factor across these crashes was speeding," the report said. Tragically, the rest of the road crash deaths were of essential services workers like doctors etc who were travelling either from or to their place of work, it said.The states which recorded maximum accidents are Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Assam, Kerala, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Punjab and Tamil Nadu. The report said while there has been a dip in the absolute number of road crash fatalities during the lockdown due to suspension of public transport and general mobility, the rate of deaths in road crashes has remained unchanged, highlighting how unsafe Indian roads are even when the majority of the country has been under restrictions. Piyush Tewari, founder and CEO, SaveLIFE Foundation, said, "India suffers the highest number of road crash deaths globally each year. Though there will be a dip in that number this year due to the lockdown, 140 deaths in over 600 crashes goes to show gains achieved will be lost as soon as things go back to normal."He said the third phase of the lockdown is a golden opportunity for states to fix engineering faults in the roads and institute mechanisms for electronic enforcement so that when things become normal, road fatalities can be kept at low. New Delhi, Mar 18 () Highlighting that there are as many as 417 deaths on Indian roads every day, global road safety body IRF on Wednesday demanded treating road accidents in India at par with coronavirus pandemic. According to International Road Federation (IRF), road accidents in India contribute 12 per cent of the global accidents, which is no less than a pandemic and could be effectively checked and handled with government support. The organisation welcomed Indian government's quick moves to prevent the spread of deadly coronavirus in the country by taking various measures but urged it to treat road accidents in the country on similar lines to prevent fatal accidents. "IRF has urged the Indian government to treat road traffic accidents on similar lines as the prevention and treatment of coronavirus pandemic," it said in a statement. "During the year 2018 about 1.51 lakh people died in 4.67 lakh road accidents in India with an average of 417 fatalities per day. But with few hundred cases of coronavirus being reported in the country, the entire central and state governments have woken up and taken preventable measures on war footing. IRF urges government to take similar steps to prevent fatal road accidents," said KK Kapila, President, Emeritus, IRF. Kapila said most of the road accident deaths and injuries in the country are preventable by simple road safety solutions including wearing of helmets by two-wheeler drivers, promoting safer behaviour, proper marking of roads, reclaiming of sidewalks from encroachers, strict adherence to safety norms, and regular road safety audits to identify black spots and their addressal. As per the data of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, about 72 per cent vehicles are two-wheelers in the country and 24 per cent are four-wheelers. About 35 per cent of total road traffic deaths in the country are contributed by two-wheelers, 18 per cent by four-wheelers, 11 per cent by trucks and other heavy duty commercial vehicles and 10 per cent by vulnerable pedestrians.
