Lalu Yadav’s RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal) faced the 2019 elections as part of the Grand Alliance consisting of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP), Congress (INR), Vikashil Insan Party (VIP), and Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) of Jitan Ram Manjhi. Their main opponent is the NDA alliance consisting of the BJP, JD (U) and LJP. In the 2014 general elections for the Lok Sabha, the RJD-Congress-NC alliance secured only 6 seats out of 40. The BJP-led NDA scored 31 out of 40 Lok Sabha seats leaving Lalu’s RJD with 4 seats, the JD (U) with 2 seats and NCP with just 1 seat. The Lok Sabha 2019 election will be a crucial phase in the history of Bihar politics and especially for the RJD since Lalu Prasad Yadav is now promoting his son Tejaswi Yadav. Lalu Yadav is now to wait and see for the result if the generational shift he has attempted this time will work with the voters or not. Lalu’s family witnessed some rebellions during 2019 Lok Sabha elections within his own family. Lalu’s elder son Tej Pratap seems to have conveyed his displeasure with the selection of candidates by his younger brother Tejaswi Yadav. In the Pataliputra constituency, Lalu Prasad’s eldest daughter Misa Bharati is contesting. She has been pitted against the BJP candidate Ram Kripal Yadav. The Bihar assembly election results appeared to belie predictions made by most exit polls which had given a clear edge to the Rashtriya Janata Dal-led Mahagathbandhan. The ABP-CVoter exit poll prediction was the closest among all. It had projected 104-128 seats for the NDA and 108-131 seats for the opposition grand alliance. According to the Election Commission's website, as of 10.30 pm, the NDA was ahead with a slender margin. It had either won or was leading in 122 seats while the Mahagathbandhan's tally stood at 113. The majority mark in the 243-member Bihar assembly is 122. Counting in a few seats is still underway. The RJD, however, was ahead of all parties it had either won or was ahead in 77 seats. The BJP was close behind at 72. The JD(U) was a distant third and had either won or was ahead in 42 seats, the Congress in 19 seats. The Left parties tally stood at 17. Chanakya-CNN News18 on Tuesday projected 180 seats for the RJD-led grand alliance, 55 for the NDA and eight for others. India Today-Axis My India poll showed the RJD-led opposition was likely to win 139-161 seats, as against 69-91 for the NDA. It predicted three to five seats for the LJP and others. The ABP-CVoter exit poll predicted 104-128 seats for the NDA and 108-131 seats for the opposition grand alliance. It projected Chirag Paswan-led LJP to get one to three seats. A similar trend was predicted by Times Now-CVoter, which projected 116 seats for the NDA, 120 for the opposition alliance and a single seat for the LJP. It predicted six seats for others. Republic TV-Jan Ki Baat exit poll also gave a clear majority to the RJD-led alliance with 128 seats, while it projected 104 seats for the ruling NDA, seven seats for the LJP and four for others. TV9 Bharatvarsh projected NDA to win 115 seats, the grand alliance 120 and four each for LJP and others. The NDA comprises the JD(U), BJP, Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) and Hindustan Awam Morcha (Secular). The BJP contested 110 seats, leaving 11 to the VIP, while the JD(U) fielded candidates on 115 seats. It had given seven seats to the HAM. On the other hand, the RJD contested 144 seats, the Congress 70 and the three Left parties fielded candidates on 29 seats. The three-phase Bihar Assembly election ended on Saturday. Bihar Election 2020: Most exit polls miss the mark

A total of 163 ( 68 per cent) out of the 241 winners in the Bihar Assembly polls have declared criminal cases against themselves in the poll affidavits, with <keyword id="42678" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="RJD">RJD</keyword> topping the list with around 73 per cent, Bihar Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) said. Of the 163 MLA-elects, 123 (51 per cent of total affidavits analysed) have serious criminal cases pending against them, including those related to murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping and crimes against women. In the 2015 Assembly elections, 142 (58 per cent) MLAs had self-declared such cases against them in their affidavits. This time, the ADR had analysed the self-sworn affidavits of 241 of the 243 victorious candidates. The ADR did not say anything on such details of remaining winners. The results of the three-phase elections were declared on Wednesday early morning after counting that went on for over 20 hours. Out of the 123 winners, 19 have murder cases, 31 attempt to murder and eight crimes against women against their names. Among the major parties, 54 (73 per cent) of the 74 winners from Tejashwi Yadav-led <keyword id="123786" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rashtriya-Janata-Dal">Rashtriya Janata Dal</keyword> (RJD) have pending criminal cases, followed by 47 (64 per cent) out of 73 from BJP, 20 (47 per cent) out of 43 from Janata Dal-United, 16 (84 per cent) out of 19 from Congress, 10 (83 per cent) out of 12 from Communist Party of India-Marxist Leninist Liberation, and five (100 per cent) out of 5 from Asaduddin Owaisi's All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen. A total of 44 (60 per cent) out of 74 RJD winners, 35 (48 per cent) out of 73 from BJP, 11 (26 per cent) out of 43 from JD-U, 11 (58 per cent) out of 19 from Congress, eight (67 per cent) out of 12 from CPI-MLL and 5 (100 per cent) out of 5 from AIMIM have serious criminal cases pending against them. A new face to join several other <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> leaders in criticising the party's election strategy in Bihar is <keyword id="198958" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Manoj-Tewari">Manoj Tewari</keyword>, Lok Sabha member from Delhi. 
 
He lauded the strategy of JDU-RJD-Congress alliance as "undoubtedly better". 
 

	The Bhojpuri singer-turned-politician said the party failed to convince the people to vote for BJP candidates in the keenly-fought Bihar elections. 
 

	"We failed to make people realise to vote for the party at the Centre and earn maximum benefits. We clearly failed to convine our party agenda to the people of Bihar," said Tewari, who represents North East Delhi in Lok Sabha. 
 

	"Undoubtedly the strategy of grand alliance (of JDU-RJD-Congress) had been proved better than ours. We could have campaigned in a more strategical way to reach out larger masses," he added. 
 

	Ever since the BJP faced drubbing in the Bihar Assembly elections whose results were declared on November 8, several leaders have spoken out against the strategy, including the way the campaign was conducted. 
 The critics include party veterans L K Advani, M M Joshi and <keyword id="6381725" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Yashwant-Sinha">Yashwant Sinha</keyword> who have demanded fixing of accountability. Others who have spoken out include Bihar MPs <keyword id="10362" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shatrughan-Sinha">Shatrughan Sinha</keyword>, R K Singh and Bhola Singh.

Now, Manoj Tewari criticises BJP strategy in Bihar

With the tenure of the present Vidhan Sabha ending on 5 January 2020, the Election Commission has announced the assembly elections to select the next government for Jharkhand that will occupy the state’s throne. The polling in the state will be conducted in 5 phases starting from 30 November 2019 and so the election scene is becoming hot with all the major parties trying their luck to grab as many seats as possible. The major parties in the state of Jharkhand that can influence the election results include BJP, AJSU, JVM, JMM, and INC. BJP BJP faced the 2014 assembly elections in the state in alliance with AJSU (All Jharkhand Students’ Union). Out of the total number of 81 assembly seats, BJP got 37 seats and its ally AJSU contributed its 5 seats. Hence, BJP could form a coalition government in the state with 42 MLAs whereas the total number required for a majority government is 41. Raghubar Das of BJP is the present Chief Minister for Jharkhand. Shri Laxman Gilua is the party leader for the BJP in Jharkhand. AJSU AJSU has hinted that it will not go for ties with BJP this time when the party is now confronting the 2019 assembly elections. Sudesh Kumar Mahto is the party’s Jharkhand state president. Addressing the press people recently, AJSU chief spokesman Deosharan Bhagat said, "Our intention is very clear that a strong government should be formed in Jharkhand and issues relating to Jharkhand should be solved strongly." The party has strongly hinted about facing the elections independently so that they can focus on winning as many seats as possible. In 2014 election, the party won only 5 seats which were contributed to form the coalition government in the state with the BJP. JVM Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) or Jharkhand Development Front (Democratic) was started in 2006 by Babulal Marandi who was formerly a Union Minister and the Jharkhand Chief Minister. He left the BJP on charges that the party had sidelined him and failed to recognize him and hence started JVM. The party president has announced that JVM will face the upcoming assembly elections alone and hence will nominate its candidates to contest from all the 81 seats. In the 2014 assembly elections, the party had won only 2 seats. INC, JMM and RJD INC is facing the 2019 general elections for the Vidhan Sabha in Jharkhand in alliance with Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Lalu Prasad Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). After providing the details about the pre-poll alliance, the party’s Jharkhand state in-charge RPN Singh has announced that the former Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren will be the chief minister candidate for the alliance. As per the alliance terms, the Congress will contest in 31 out of 81 seats. RJD will contest from 7 seats and JMM will nominate its candidates from 43 seats. In 2014 elections for the Jharkhand Vidhan Sabha, INC got 6 seats, JMM got 19 seats and RJD did not get any seats.

<ul><li>BJP's Giriraj Singh has over 6.88 lakh votes compared to rival Kanhaiya Kumar's 2.67 lakh votes.</li><li>Rashtriya Janata Dal's Tanveer Hasan has a little over 1.96 lakh votes after the first hour of counting.</li><li>BJP has over 51% of the votes counted so far.</li></ul>A small district of Begusarai has a difficult choice to make between two firebrand politicians-- debutante Kanhaiya Kumar from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), popularly known as CPI(M) and the veteran Giriraj Singh from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). And they seem to have picked Singh's saffron over Kumar's red. As of 9:50 am, Giriraj Singh was ahead with 51% of the votes counted while Kanhaiya Kumar had half the number of votes as his rival from BJP. In the third spot is Tanveer Hasan of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), which is in alliance with the Congress in the state of Bihar. The voter turnout this time was at 61.27% that is 2% more than five years ago when the BJP candidate Bhola Singh bagged the seat with a margin of 58,000 votes. Kanhaiya Kumar shot to national fame when the cops in Delhi arrested him and his friends from the Jawaharlal Nehru University for alleged anti-national activities in 2016. Since then, he has used the media spotlight on him to challenge BJP’s politics and policies, and target Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his rhetoric. Aside from a long list of stars from the showbiz -- poet Javed Akhtar, actors Shabana Aazmi, Prakash Raj and Swara Bhaskara as well as comedian Kunal Kamra campaigned for him -- Kanhaiya Kumar has the support of a big chunk of people, nearly 450,000, in the district who belong to the same caste as him, Bhumihar. He has also been wooing votes of the Muslims, who make for 17% of the district’s population. However, it has to be said that in the particular case of Begusarai, both RJD and CPI(M) resonate among Muslim voters, people from the Yadav community, as well as those from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes of the region. Further, Kumar and Hasan are pitted against a veteran politician and a minister in the central government, Giriraj Singh, who is riding on Modi’s charm much like many other BJP candidates across the country. Any division of votes between Kumar and Hasan may provide an advantage to the BJP. On the other hand, a victory for Kumar may earn him the credibility of a serious politician and a long career. Counting of votes for 243 Assembly constituencies of Bihar is underway on Tuesday amid tight security and Covid-19 arrangements at all counting centres. Counting began at 8 a.m. at 55 counting centres set up at 38 district headquarters. According to the Bihar State Election Commission, three counting centres each in East Champaran, Siwan, Begusarai and Gaya, and two each in Nalanda, Banka, Purnia, Bhagalpur, Darbhanga, Gopalganj and Saharsa have been set up. And, there are 414 halls in 55 counting centers. According to the Election Commission, the first results were expected by mid afternoon. Voting took place in Bihar in three phases -- October 28, November 3 and November 7. The magic figure in the 243-seated Assembly is 122. A three-tier security arrangements has been made at all counting centres. Those with valid passes only have been allowed inside the polling stations.
