New Delhi, The government on Tuesday increased the <keyword id="14716344" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="windfall-profit-tax" source="Orion">windfall profit tax</keyword> on <keyword id="45185" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crude-oil" source="Orion">crude oil</keyword> produced in the country and reduced the levy on exports of diesel. The tax, levied in the form of Special Additional Excise Duty or SAED, on domestically produced crude oil was increased to Rs 9,800 per tonne from Rs 9,050 a tonne, according to an official notification. SAED on the export of diesel was reduced to Rs 2 per litre from Rs 4 a litre and on <keyword id="19342328" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jet-fuel-or-ATF" source="Orion">jet fuel or ATF</keyword> to nil from Rs 1, the notification said. SAED on export of petrol will continue to be zero. The new tax rates will come into effect from Wednesday. India first imposed <keyword id="2378386" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="windfall-profit" source="Orion">windfall profit</keyword> taxes on July 1 last year, joining a growing number of nations that tax supernormal profits of energy companies. At that time, export duties of Rs 6 per litre (USD 12 per barrel) each were levied on petrol and ATF and Rs 13 a litre (USD 26 a barrel) on diesel. A Rs 23,250 per tonne (USD 40 per barrel) windfall profit tax on crude oil produced by companies such as Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) was also levied. The tax rates are reviewed every fortnight based on average oil prices in the previous two weeks. A windfall tax is levied on domestic crude oil if rates of the global benchmark rise above USD 75 per barrel. Export of diesel, ATF and petrol attract the levy if product cracks (or margins) rise above USD 20 per barrel. Product cracks or margins are the difference between crude oil (raw material) and finished petroleum products. International crude oil prices averaged USD 90.17 per barrel in October. The levy on domestic crude oil dropped to nil in the first half of April as international crude oil prices fell but was back in the second half in step with a rise in rates. Levy on diesel became nil in April but the levy was brought back in August. Levy on ATF became nil in March and was brought back in second half of August. The export tax on petrol was scrapped in the very first review. Crude oil pumped out of the ground and from below the seabed is refined and converted into fuels like petrol, diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF). Reliance Industries Ltd, which operates the world's largest single-location oil refinery complex at Jamnagar in Gujarat, and Rosneft-backed Nayara Energy are primary exporters of fuel in the country.

Its record profits came in spite of decline in production for the last 11-18 quarters, aging fields, and lack of new discoveries. However, crude oil prices soared to almost $140 a barrel - making even its low output very valuable. ONGC contributes to 70% of India’s total oil and gas production. “A rally in global crude oil and natural gas prices is a key driving factor behind ONGC’s profitability,” said a report by YES Securities. It added that any moderation in crude prices will affect its cash flows as its capex requirement is very high to maintain production in its aging fields. ONGC reported a net profit of ₹40,305 crore for FY22 surpassing Tata Steel, by a decent margin. It also beat one of India’s most valuable companies - TCS in terms of profits - after crude oil prices soared. <div type="image" title="top 5 companies col (1)" height="900" width="1200" msid="91890739" hostid="261"></div>Taxes, sanctions and more to affect ONGC profitability As expected, this rise in profitability might be unsustainable, especially since analysts believe that Russia-Ukraine tensions could settle down, cooling off the soaring crude. “ONGC’s performance depends on how long geopolitical tensions persist as its profits are directly connected to crude oil prices,” Sanjiv Bhasin, executive vice president, markets &amp; corporate affairs at India Infoline, told Business Insider India. Bhasin believes that these tensions will ease by mid-July. As soon as crude prices come down, so will ONGC’s place in the list of most profitable companies. “Brent will not sustain the $110 kind of level. One or two years down the line, Brent will cool down. The two year future market also shows prices cooling off about $80-$90 per barrel range so that will definitely impact the margins for ONGC,” Anshuman Khanna, the founding director of Valpro, told Business Insider India. While the advantages of the war might go away soon, its effects - like sanctions on Russia - could remain and can affect ONGC’s fortunes negatively. <div type="image" title="ongc (1)" height="900" width="1200" msid="91890758" hostid="261"></div>The Russian connection ONGC’s international arm, ONGC Videsh owns stakes in multiple energy assets in Russia. ONGC has a 20% stake in it, along with interests in Sakhalin II, and Vankor fields in Siberia. “Russian assets are facing two issues -- one is the fact that Russian crude is trading at a discount about $10-$20 to Brent and second issue is repatriation of Russian dividend from these assets because of sanctions. It’s a real risk, which could jeopardize their entire Russian investment,” Anshuman Khanna, the founding directors of Valpro, told Business Insider. The Indian government too isn’t allowing the state-owned oil explorer to enjoy its profits either. It is believed to collect some of it in the form of a <a href="http://theres-a-strong-case-to-levy-windfall-taxes-11653810086031.html">windfall tax on oil producing companies.</a> Analysts at Citi call this tax threat an overhang. There is speculation that the government might impose a 25% tax on profits of oil and gas producing companies as crude prices have surged over 50% in 2022. The stock has gained over the last one year, but does not reflect the positive impact of crude oil on its profits. In the next one year, the company is expected to expand its margins from the current 23% to a healthy 25% by FY21. Larsen &amp; Toubro As the domestic business landed a slowdown, India’s largest infrastructure player Larsen &amp; Toubro quickly diversified its portfolio. This strategy has worked for it as its order flow at the end of June stood at a robust ₹2,940 billion. The order flow momentum grew by around 11% year on year and the only risks it faces is in its execution. It also has a five year plan Lakshya to double its sales to ₹2 trillion by FY21. “L&amp;T’s diversified exposure to various sectors/ geographies coupled with its excellent execution capabilities and its balance sheet strength has resulted in strong order book build up. The consensus values the company at 22 times for a target price of ₹1,900,” said Karvy. HDFC Bank HDFC Bank is one of the few banks which showed shown resilience as crisis expands in the sector. Its consistent performance makes it a relative outperformer in the sector. Added to that, the stock is currently trading at around 4% of its expected value for the next fiscal. Its spreads or basically margins will see no volatility in the coming months as it holds power to price in the wholesale lending market. “Despite the NBFC industry facing challenges, we expect the relative outperformance of HDFC will help it to sustain premium valuations. We value HDFC at consensus of 4.3 times,” said Karvy. Zee Entertainment Even as the Essel group is facing liquidity crisis, the core TV business of the company is performing well. Added to that, its digital business is also growing fast with a strong use base of 76.4 million. Its subscription revenue also grew by over 5% till last year. It is also launching 72 more original digital shows which will garner more eyeballs, putting the company in the high growth sphere. Karvy is confident that it will maintain 30% profit margin in the next two years.
