Here are the top ten takeaways from a historic speech that laid out the path for the transformation of one of India's biggest and fairly old conglomerate: 1. A $15 billion cash-out Saudi Arabia's state-owned oil producer, Aramco, will buy 20% stake in the Indian behemoth's oil-to-chemicals business, valuing the unit at $75 billion. This would make the investment from Aramco in RIL at about $15 billion. This partnership will be across refining and petrochemical assets. The Saudi government owned oil major will also supply 500 barrels of day crude oil to RIL’s Jamnagar refinery. “This signifies perfect synergy and world’ largest integrated refinery and petchem complex,” Ambani said. 2. More money, less debt Reliance Industries has a huge debt of about $21 billion. This has been a huge concern for investors lately which led to a fall in the stock price in the last few months. However, Ambani declared that the net debt will be zero by March 2021. The company has cash and cash equivalents of about $19.5 billion and another $15 billion from Aramco will help the company retire its massive debt. Small businesses can get the voice/data services, marketing and sales solutions and all Microsoft tools package at a starting price of ₹1,500 a month. 5. The threat to Jeff Bezos Microsoft's tie-up with Jio will, probably, be the biggest challenge for Jeff Bezos in one of the world's biggest markets, India. Reliance will offer end-to-end digital stack to "enable and empower" small merchants currently at the mercy of other online retail platforms like Amazon and Flipkart (now owned by Walmart). This stack will include a point-of-sale payment device, which could be a $900 billion market, according to Jal Irani, analyst at Edelweiss Financial Services. 6. Once an oil giant, now immersed in technology Ambani's plan for digital transformation is that of convergence with the physical world. Reliance Industries plans to take long strides in spaces like 'Internet of Things' (IoT), cloud computing and a broadband ecosystem. So far, Jio had only one revenue stream, and now there will be four more streams of revenue that will kick in from the current financial year itself. "Within another 2 years, there will be over 2 billion connected devices in India, and Jio aims to have half of those on its IoT platform. This will be a ₹20,000 crore revenue opportunity and the commercial ops will begin from January 2020," Ambani said. 7. <keyword id="7975366" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-fibre-launch-date">Jio Fibre launch date</keyword> and tariff plan Jio Fibre will be availabe starting September 5, the third anniversary of Jio's launch, across India. The full network roll-out for Jio Fibre in the next year. After disrupting mobile telephony, Ambani is targeting the fixed line broadband. Of the total 240 million households in India, the broadband penetration in India is only about 10% right now. That leaves Ambani to fight a large under-served market without having to offer deep discounts. Jio will come bundled with most-premium OTT applications. Jio will also release movies on its platforms on the same day as the theatres. Jio Fibre users subscribing for 'forever annual plans' will get an 4K LED television and a 4K set-top box. 8. The difference between Jio mobile and Jio Fibre However, this time Jio does not seem to burn cash offering discounts to win over customers but is betting more on offering more value for a reasonable price. The plans will cost anywhere between ₹700 and ₹10,000 per month. Any voice call on Jio will be free forever. The fixed line international calls will be cheaper by up to 90% of the existing industry tariffs. Calls to US and Canada from India on Jio will cost only ₹500 a month.

 9. From content creator to content aggregator Jio seems to have changed focus from creating fresh content for its platform to building alliances with other OTT platforms. Ambani also revealed that Jio will be able to offer traditional TV channels to its customers. Earlier this year, RIL acquired controlling stakes in Hathway, Den and GTPL. Together, they give RIL access to 30,000 local cable operators. "We have designed a Jio set top box that will broadcast TV channels, for which the local cable operators will get a steady revenue. This set top box will be sold to all Jio Fibre customers," the RIL chairman said. Premium subscribers of Jio Fibre will also be able to watch newly-released movies at the comfort of their home on the day of their release in the theaters. This will be a huge setback for companies like Inox and PVR as Jio's offering may affect footfalls at multiplexes and box office collections too. 10. More bad news for Vodafone Idea and Airtel Jio's mobile phone services has about 340 million subscribers as of now. Ambani is targeting to take this number to over 500 million over the next few months. That would mean Jio will remain an aggressive player in the market and that's bad news for other players like Airtel and Vodafone Idea. Given that RIL is getting additional cash from Aramco and BP, and if it becomes a zero net debt company by March 2021, the company of its size and scale will only have more money to muscle out other players with its aggressive pricing. According to a research report by BofA Securities, in the last 4 years, with <keyword id="2003276" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword>, RIL has been able to build a "digital layer" on top of the existing "physical layer" of retail shops across electronics, grocery and apparels. "We believe the next four years, RIL's focus would be to add a third 'layer of commerce' and monetize the existing investments across different formats," the report said. The company continues to invest in technology and is partnering with world's best (Google, Facebook, Microsoft) as well as India's best (invested in 20 plus startups). "We believe RIL is uniquely positioned with a sustainable competitive advantage to monetize this," it added. "In our view, the biggest takeaway from Jio's last 4 year journey was that - 'India is a supply-constrained market and not a demand-constrained market'," the report noted. So, as long as any company could efficiently provide goods and services at affordable prices, this market would consume. "Jio proved the hypothesis and with potentially tariffs moving up in the future, we could see profitability also improving in cellular space," the report said. "Over the next 3-4 years we believe RIL will offer 'value for money' proposition across fiber broadband, SME &amp; enterprise market, offline/online retail market and areas like Education, Healthcare, Agriculture and media/Gaming markets," the report added. The company may be successful in a few domains and potentially look to acquire start-ups in spaces where it is struggling. Indeed, it has acquired 20 plus start-ups already, in process looking to improve its value proposition to consumers. One of the reasons why companies like Amazon, Alibaba, Tencent etc. have been able to create "shareholder value" is because they owned their customers. Due to their value proposition customers come back again and again to them. "We believe RIL also has potential to do this. Infact RIL's approach appears to owning the 'pipe' as well as the 'services' offered on the pipe," it said. "Over the next 3-5 years, we expect RIL to have 500 million mobile users, offer broadband services to 20-25 million households &amp; cater to 12-15 million SMEs. The connectivity part of the Jio business focuses on offering these consumers the connections. The services part would focus on monetizing these," it added. For instance, entertainment offerings would help RIL improve stickiness. Jio may not fully monetize this but would keep users captive to cross-sell other offerings. RIL is also focusing on leveraging tech to offer Ed-tech, Health-tech, Agri-tech services. "We also believe gaming will pick-up in India as the country has young population mix with world's largest Gen Z workforce," the report said. An omni channel approach on commerce would help RIL sell its grocery, apparel and electronics items to a wider audience base. By working with the Kiranas, RIL would likely increase its B2B sales as well. The catalyst could be a potential stake sale at retail business. As per reports, <keyword id="58448" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Retail">Reliance Retail</keyword> may follow the Jio Platforms model, onboarding multiple investors by selling stakes in the firm. RIL has offered all 13 investors of Jio Platforms (including Facebook, Google etc.) the option to invest in its Retail unit.

Looks like <keyword id="44373" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aditya-Birla-Group">Aditya Birla group</keyword> is all set to tap the entrepreneurial ideas of its employees, which is why it has planned to roll out an intrapreneurship programme soon, which is called Innolabs. Under the programme, the company will allow its staff to take time off from work to pursue their entrepreneurial ambitions. 
 
In August last year, the group had also started Aditya Birla Bizlabs, which was its programme to collaborate with start-ups in the retail, financial services and telecom businesses. The group has a dominant presence in these sectors. Out of the 1,200 start-ups that applied for the programme, 20 were selected to "scale up". 
 "When we were doing all of this (Bizlabs) for startups outside, our employees joining us from IITs and IIMs started asking: what is there in it for us? So, we have started working on something for our employees called <keyword id="3249352" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="aditya-birla-innolabs">Aditya Birla Innolabs</keyword>," Umesh Adhikary, president, corporate strategy and business development, Aditya Birla Group told ET. 
 
"If your idea is great and we see conviction and passion in you, we are going to help you create a company of your own. At the same time, we are going to give you a six-month or one-year sabbatical where you are going to go, develop the product, create your own team... and in case you fail, you can come and join back," added Adhikary. 
 
"We are forging partnerships with Nasscom 10,000 startups, Microsoft Ventures, Techstars, 500 startups," said Adhikary, who added that the group would prefer to work with slightly older startups which are looking at geographic expansion. 
 
Similarly, RIL has set up GenNext Innovation Hub, which is a start-up accelerator programme running in partnership with Microsoft Ventures. 
 
"It's a healthy development," says Sharad Sharma, cofounder of iSPIRT, commenting on Birla's move. "It's a playbook that Indian conglomerates have companies from tech companies globally and it's a proven one," he adds.

Aditya Birla Group would soon allow employees to take time off for pursuing their entrepreneurial ideas

New Delhi, <keyword id="10387" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> on Tuesday said that electric vehicles solutions firm <keyword id="4410318" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SUN-Mobility">SUN Mobility</keyword> is using its <keyword id="3228997" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Azure-cloud">Azure Cloud</keyword> as well as other solutions in developing Cloud-connected <keyword id="7747739" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="swappable-batteries">swappable batteries</keyword> to put the country on the road to the future. The batteries as well as the swap stations are connected to the Cloud using Microsoft Azure and numerous built-in solutions like Azure IoT Hub, <keyword id="10435393" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="azure-data-factory">Azure Data Factory</keyword>, CosmosDB, Azure Databricks, among others, that transmit battery performance telemetrics back to SUN Mobility. The customers also have the option of using an app, which connects with their EV's battery and gives them real-time information of their battery's performance and the nearest swap station in case the battery is running low. "We have stations, batteries, and customers that are connected to us. There are over 150 data points coming into our system from each battery," said Chetan Maini, founder of Bengaluru-based startup SUN Mobility. With this data, SUN Mobility understands battery utilisation, most frequented routes, and peak hours. "Using AI and machine learning algorithms, it can predict the potential demand. It can not only optimise its existing network of battery swapping stations, but also plan the location and feasibility of future stations," Microsoft said in a blog post. So far, SUN Mobility has inked over 10 original equipment manufacturing (OEM) partnerships, that will enable automobile makers to use its battery technology. These include Piaggio Commercial, the Italian automobile manufacturer's Indian arm that makes autorickshaws and Ashok Leyland, India's second largest manufacturer of large commercial vehicles like buses and trucks. SUN Mobility currently has a network of 50 battery swapping stations spread across 14 cities, with plans to ramp it up to 150 stations in 20 cities by March 2021. It has already partnered with Indian Oil Company, India's largest oil and gas company, to deploy battery swap modules at their gas stations. "We always knew that the future would be on data, cloud, and analytics, and we had to rethink of how we would look at a platform and we felt that Microsoft was the kind of company we wanted to work with," said Maini who founded the Reva Electric Car Company way back in 1996. "It was talking of sustainability, looking at data at scale, talking of making an impact, and was creating platforms. All of that resonated with our long-term vision," he added. In his current role, Maini has taken a drastically different approach to powering EVs by applying the idea of shared economy to the battery ecosystem. He's come up with a pay-as-you-go battery as a service system that is run on a digital platform built on the Microsoft Cloud. "That means you don't have to wait for hours before your EV hits full charge". Ultimately, the distance your EV can travel is no longer limited by the amount of charge in one battery. "And because you don't buy the battery upfront, the cost of an EV can come down nearly 50%," Maini said, adding that if people are willing to rent homes and cars, "I figured they'd be open to renting the battery too". His company has also partnered with over a dozen companies that own fleets, including SmartE, India's largest EV fleet operator for last-mile connectivity in urban areas. "SUN Mobility's battery as a service model can have a big impact on public transportation vehicles, where every minute the vehicle is not on the road has revenue implications. And users are already seeing the gains," the blog post by Microsoft said. Microsoft Azure partners with Sun Mobility to create EV batteries that connect to the cloud

New Delhi, Jun 23 () A combination of factors, including a rise in realisation per user, good traction in broadband and enterprise offerings and its apps gaining scale, could drive Jio Platforms' "bull-case" valuation to USD 110 billion over coming years, BofA Securities said on Tuesday. After Facebook's 10 per cent stake in Jio Platforms Ltd (JPL), nine PE firms bought 15 per cent stake in JPL valuing it at USD 66 billion. "In our JPL bull-case valuation, when we model FY22 cellular ARPU (average revenue per user) of Rs 200 (current Rs 131), good traction in broadband/enterprise offerings and a few of Jio's apps gaining scale, we estimate a value of USD 110 billion, implying significant upside potential," BofA Securities said in its latest note. Connectivity business (that is mobile, broadband, and enterprise) will be the driver for the next five years, and after which, it will be services (ad, app subsciption, internet of things), it said. "Partnerships with Microsoft, FB should help JPL offer best tech offerings to users/SMEs. Debt concern is behind us with RIL raising USD 21 billion in less than 2 months (higher than the entire tech start-up industry raised in 2019)," it said. Outlining a "bull-case" scenario, the report said it expects Jio's ARPU to stabilise to Rs 250 (and not Rs 300) in the long run as it expects Jio to earn incremental revenues via ads and app subscriptions, among others. Further, with cellular investments behind, Jio is focusing on broadband roll-out and targeting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) where it could offer bundled pack with Microsoft. "Given Jio's focus on making services affordable, we estimate subscription to Jio's apps -- mainly entertainment (content/music/games), ed-tech and health-tech to be Rs 55-65/month vs industry norm of Rs 100-150. This might lead to better uptake of paid subs and we estimate Jio apps to contribute to USD 9.5 billion value," it said. Zoom's next big idea — its own email service and calendar app by next year

New York, A <keyword id="98892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="federal-court">federal court</keyword> has permanently shut down a US-based computer scam that preyed on elderly Americans using call centre operators in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> resulting in losses of hundreds of thousands of dollars. In a statement on Tuesday, the <keyword id="67869" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Department-of-Justice">Department of Justice</keyword> said that the court gave the <keyword id="3528317" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Permanent-injunction">permanent injunction</keyword> against Michael Brian Cotter and four <keyword id="22917" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Companies">companies</keyword> barring them offering <keyword id="843005" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="technical-support">technical support</keyword> through telemarketing and web sites following a joint operation by US authorities and India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The alleged fraudsters in some cases impersonated Microsoft, which brought cases to the attention of the Transnational Elder Fraud Strike Force., the <keyword id="6360339" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="department">Department</keyword> said. The Department had filed in October a request for the injunction against Cotter and the companies before the court in Miami, <keyword id="6357385" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="florida">Florida</keyword>, which is an area with a concentration of retirees, and a temporary injunction was granted immediately and was now made permanent. Acknowledging India's cooperation, Acting Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey Bossert Clark said: "The Department is grateful for the cooperation of foreign law enforcement, including India's CBI, in investigating, disrupting, and prosecuting technical-support fraud schemes and other schemes originating abroad and directed at the American public." The complaint said that Cotter allegedly worked with co-conspirators in India, but did not identify them. One of the companies mentioned in the complaint is registered in Singapore. The US federal government also took over 19 domain names like "assistmysoftware" and "helpforsoftware" that were used in the alleged scam to prevent their continued use. According to the Department of Justice's complaint, the alleged fraud involved causing pop-up messages to appear on computer screens purporting to be from Microsoft or other companies falsely claiming that the computers were infected with viruses and asking the users to call a phone number for help. When they called the number it was transferred to call centres in India from where the operators asked to access the computers and then claimed they had detected "non-existent" problems and charged them hundreds of dollars claiming falsely to fix fake issues on the computer, the complaint said. The Department said that since President Donald Trump signed the Elder Abuse Prevention and Prosecution Act (EAPPA) into law in October 2017, it has participated in hundreds of enforcement actions against scams targeting seniors. India's CBI helped US sleuths shut down a call centre scam that impersonated Microsoft at times

New Delhi, May 27 (IANS) Covid-19 is expected to accelerate digital adoption in India and as online trends take shape, behavioural modification could strengthen, with contactless shopping, payments, and delivery taking hold, according to US financial services house, Morgan Stanley. A research report said 2020 will likely see increasing online penetration in grocery and put a few Super Apps into motion. Digital trends in India are beginning to take hold. India's digital economy is still in the initial phase, but it has witnessed considerable progress over the past five years. Ecommerce penetration touched 3 per cent of India's retail market in 2019, much lower than the 26.7 per cent in China and 22 per cent in the US. Digital payments through a unified payments interface (UPI) started inflecting in 2017 (post demonetization) and were at 9.2 per cent of GDP in 2019, vs zero three years prior. Data usage in the past few years has seen a 'hockey stick' growth, due particularly to high video consumption, Morgan Stanley said. Covid-19 could fast-track some of the developments: India's total online shopper base remains low at 30 per cent of its internet population, versus 78 per cent in China and 70%+ in the US, and has been a limiting factor for growth. "We believe a larger increase in its online shopping base is needed to drive growth in its digital economy. We think Covid-19 has the potential to do just that, at least until a vaccine is widely available, which is currently expected by summer 2021, and beyond that, hopefully these behavioral modifications will become somewhat permanent," the report said. "We have seen the power of online in the past few months as start-ups have helped consumers shop, pay for bills, converse, entertain, and collaborate without much physical contact. We believe that this digital adoption has the power to pull growth forward by a few years in India's internet industry," the report added. In a post-Covid-19 world, India's online shopping population could see a sharp increase, online penetration in grocery could finally inflect as eCommerce and new entrants make a bigger push in this category, digitization of small and medium business (SMB) enterprises could take centre-stage, investments in segments such as gaming, edtech, healthtech, and cloud could increase, another outcome that we think is easy to predict in broad terms, but almost impossible to do so with precision, is changes to the competitive landscape. According to Morgan Stanley, several start-ups may need to curtail their activities or completely close their businesses due to a lack of adequate growth capital, which could further propel the category leaders along with possible M&amp;A opportunities; and there could be the emergence of a few large tech companies (Super Apps or category leaders) in the next 5-10 years. On the company's new commerce initiative, Mukesh Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Industries mentioned in his July 2018 AGM speech that the next big growth opportunity is the online-to-offline new commerce platform that would synergize the power of the physical retail business with the digital infrastructure created by Jio. As highlighted in the AGM, the company's plan is to deploy Merchant Point of Sale for such local shop owners, which would enable them to manage inventory, keep digital records and file returns, improve working capital management, retain and upgrade customers, access new customers, run promotion and loyalty programs, accept digital payments, etc. This is similar to China, where Alibaba's foray into new retail included the Ling Shou Tong (LST) B2B platform that already had onboard 1mn out of the 6mn 'mom &amp; pop' stores in China. "We think a 'new normal' will emerge in a post-Covid-19 world, and digital adoption could accelerate further Covid-19 has had a significant impact on the global economy and is likely to alter the way we live, do business, and interact with each other going forward. We believe that we have seen the true power of digital technologies unleash across businesses and in our daily lives," the report says. The launch of Reliance Jio's 4G telecom services in September 2016 helped spur the digital economy in India as it propelled internet usage in the country, with fast, reliable, and cheap 4G services leading to significant growth in data usage (especially on music and video content). "Incrementally, we believe that Covid-19 has relieved some apprehension relating to digital transactions and, as the saying goes, every adversity presents an opportunity. We believe Covid-19 could accelerate the shift to online transactions (such as eCommerce and payments) and provide a tailwind to growth in India's digital economy," it added. "New Commerce is a massive new business opportunity of $700 billion.The main purpose of New Commerce is to completely transform the unorganized retail market, which accounts for 90% of India's retail industry," Ambani said at the RIL AGM in August, 2019. Reliance Retail and WhatsApp have entered into a commercial agreement to accelerate Reliance Retail's new commerce business on the Jiomart platform using WhatsApp. Jiomart is a platform that helps RIL support small merchants and kirana stores in serving end-consumers. RIL aims to focus on 60mn micro, small and medium-sized businesses along with the 30mn small merchants and millions of SMEs with the digital platform (per a company press release). Amazon India has also announced a $1 billion investment over the next five years to digitize 10mn SMBs, enabling $10 billion in cumulative exports by Indian businesses selling on Amazon worldwide by 2025.
