Titan Titan’s board has approved to provide corporate guarantees worth ₹906 crore to various banks on behalf of Titan Commodity Trading, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company. AU Small Finance Bank AU Small Finance Bank announced that it has partnered with the private life insurance company ICICI Prudential Life Insurance to offer need and goal-based life insurance solutions. Cochin Shipyard Cochin Shipyard’s board is scheduled to meet on January 4 to consider the declaration of interim dividend to the company’s equity shareholders for the financial year 2020-21. 3i Infotech IT firm 3i Infotech has entered into definitive agreements to sell its software products business to the funds advised by Apax Partners for ₹1,000 crore. The software products business will be acquired by a newly formed Azentio Software company, wholly-owned by the Apax Funds, a statement said. Reliance Capital Anil Ambani’s Reliance Group company, Reliance Capital on Monday raised objection to the proposed 33.12% stake sale of Prime Focus (PFL) by Credit Suisse to PFL’s promoter group at ₹44.15 per share. The debt-ridden firm, Reliance Capital, termed the proposed transaction as a blatant abuse of the purported rights by Credit Suisse under certain lending agreements with the RCAP Group, the company said in a statement. Mphasis IT firm Mphasis subsidiary, Mphasis Consulting, has acquired UK-based Datalytyx for up to £13.3 million (about ₹130.4 crore). The acquisition is expected to provide access to strengthen Mphasis next-generation Data GTM Strategy and provide higher value partnership status with Snowflake and Talend for cloud-based data services, a regulatory filing said. The shares of Mphasis ended 0.50% lower on Thursday. Syngene International Syngene International announced that it had signed an agreement with Deerfield Discovery and Development Corporation (3DC) to collaborate for five years to advance therapeutic discovery projects. The shares of Syngene International ended 0.86% lower on Thursday. Muthoot Finance and Manappuram Finance The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed penalties of ₹10 lakh and ₹5 lakh on Muthoot Finance and Manappuram Finance respectively for norm violations. The central bank has penalised Muthoot Finance for non-compliance with directions issued by RBI on maintenance of loan-to-value ratio in gold loans and on obtaining a copy of PAN card of the borrower while granting gold loans in excess of ₹5 lakh, contravening RBI norms. Apollo Hospitals Apollo Hospitals and Tata Medical and Diagnostics (TataMD) have collaborated to introduce TataMD CHECK diagnostic test (Feluda) for COVID-19 in India. Here’s a list of stocks to watch for in trade on September 11: Reliance Industries and Future Retail Mukesh Ambani led RIL has clarified on the circulating news report about the company selling Amazon $20 billion stakes in its retail arm. RIL said, “we do not comment on media speculation and rumours, and we cannot confirm or deny any transaction which may or may not be in the works.” This may also move the shares of Mukesh Ambani’s recently acquired Future Retail. The shares of RIL closed 7.29% higher yesterday, whereas Future Retail was locked in a 5% upper circuit. Bank of Baroda and Union Bank The Bank of Baroda reduced Marginal cost of funds-based lending rate (MCLR) between 5-30 basis points across various tenors with effect from September 12. The Union Bank of India also decided to reduce the MCLR by up to 5 basis points across tenors. One hundred basis points make 1%. The shares of Bank of Baroda closed 3% higher yesterday, whereas Union Bank gained 2%. Info Edge Info Edge said its investee company Zomato had raised $160 million (₹1,173 crore) in funding from Tiger Global and Temasek Holdings subsidiary MacRitchie Investments, valuing the online food ordering platform at $3.3 billion. The shares of Info Edge closed 3.30% higher on September 10. HAL The state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) reported a 74% drop in its net profit to ₹148.7 for the first quarter ended June 30. The company’s overall revenue was down 47% compared to the same period last year. The shares of HAL closed 3.24% higher on Thursday. Maruti Suzuki The promoter of India’s largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki— Suzuki Motor Corporation acquired 2.84 lakh shares from September 8-9. <ul><li>Market is not rushing to downgrade <keyword id="17277356" type="General" weightage="90" keywordseo="jio-fin" source="Orion">Jio Fin</keyword> rivals just yet, despite its deep pockets and ability to disrupt.</li><li><keyword id="2003276" type="General" weightage="70" keywordseo="jio" source="Orion">Jio</keyword> Fin’s aggression in the unsecured loan business will decide how badly rivals will be impacted in times to come.</li><li>Given that cost of funds for JFS is expected to be significantly lower than other NBFCs, it can price its offerings much better than rivals in consumer finance. </li></ul> A behemoth was born on Monday with the listing of the financial services business of <keyword id="6355199" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="reliance-industries" source="Orion">Reliance Industries</keyword> on the exchanges. With the listing of <keyword id="15323576" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="jio-financial-services" source="Orion">Jio Financial Services</keyword>, the obvious question is the impact that this entity will have on other listed financial services players because it will take them head on. The obvious assumption is that companies that currently are in the consumer and MSME lending space will be directly impacted. Jio Fin’s rich parentage and high capital base will be its biggest advantage. The net worth of the newborn is higher than its nearest competitor and this will enable it to build a large loan book much faster. But this may not be enough to win in the marketplace as it is a total novice when it comes to underwriting and execution. The market will closely monitor Jio Fin’s aggression in the consumer finance business before downgrading its competitors. For now, the jury is out. Like all other businesses that Reliance has set foot in, even in financial services the market is expecting two things – scale and mega disruption. The first segment that Jio is set to rock first is the lending space. Jio Financial Services ahead of its listing on 18 August released some details on the structure of the company and businesses it would operate in. Jio Financial Services is not just a systemically important non-banking financial institution but also a core investment company (CIC). The RBI has mandated the conversion of Jio Fin into a CIC and NBFC over the next three months. What this essentially means is that all the other businesses will operate under this holding company as subsidiaries. In time, all the subsidiaries could also be listed. The key businesses that Jio Financial Services will be present include: Reliance Retail Finance, Reliance Retail Insurance Broking, Reliance Payment Solutions, Jio Payments Bank, the Asset Management Company will be a joint venture with Blackrock. Reliance Industrial Investments and Holdings will be the sole beneficiary of the 6.1% stake in Reliance Industries. Jio Information Aggregator Services will pursue the account aggregator business, which is yet to commence. Jio Infrastructure Management Services will offer project management services. The first segment that Jio Fin seeks to aggressively pursue is retail lending. The dominant player in this segment is Bajaj Finance, which offers small ticket loans to consumers to buy consumer durables. This business has been mastered by Bajaj Finance over the last decade and a half by tying up with stores like Vijay Sales and Croma. This is where Jio will strike first. Reliance Retail has over 550 digital stores against 517 stores owned by its two rivals Croma (387 stores) and Vijay Sales (130 stores). In merchant lending, its focus is on financing options for merchants in grocery, digital, fashion and pharma formats. According to Nomura, the focus of its MSME lending business will be better geographic penetration. Jio Fin will seek to meet the borrowing needs of small businesses that often resort to high-interest informal channels for small-ticket loans. The company will enter into secured loans in the medium term. Over a period of time Jio Fin will offer unsecured loans too. Sources in the banking industry believe that the new entrant will disrupt the sector with differentiated and cheaper offerings as it can afford to do it because of its strong capital base. The cost of funds of JFS are expected to be significantly lower than other NBFCs. According to Morgan Stanley, “The consolidated entity is starting with a capital base of Rs 114.1 bn as of March 2023 (Rs 193.5 bn ex-book value of RIL stake). If it were to allocate this capital to the lending business, this would likely result in it being among the largest NBFCs by net worth. While this implies significant capacity to lend, we will need to see the pace and mode of execution (organic/inorganic). Hence, the market will closely watch every move JioFS makes.” While the markets believe that Jio will put technology and analytics at the heart of the business, building data will take time. Also, given the competition in the sector, borrowing by consumers is high and that is also leading to higher delinquencies. Therefore, the franchise that Jio builds will matter more than the scale of the loan book. The other issue that analysts see is the capital base of the new entity. Jio Fin as a consolidated entity has a capital base of Rs 114,100 crore or Rs 1.14 trillion as of March 2023 (Rs19,350 crore ex-book value of RIL stake). According to Nomura, if Jio Fin were to allocate this capital to the lending business, this would likely result in it being among the largest NBFCs by net worth. “While this implies significant capacity to lend, we will need to see the pace and mode of execution (organic/inorganic). Hence, the market will closely watch every move JioFS makes,” the report adds.

For the quarter ended September, Paytm reported a loss of ₹572 crore, which narrowed from ₹644 crore in the previous quarter. Analysts at Goldman Sachs expect Paytm’s margin to improve further and forecast FY24 to be the first full year of adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) profitability with continuing momentum in the lending vertical. However, Reliance’s large distribution network, customer base and deep pockets will benefit Jio Financial Services, according to Jefferies. The company’s network of over 15,000 stores across several formats (supermarkets, digital stores, etc.) and a vast customer base of more than 400 million in telecom and over 200 million in the retail segment could give JFS a large customer base to bank on. “Unlike other fintechs, JFS will have a large balance sheet, not be asset-light and eventually manufacture most product offerings, giving it a significant competitive advantage, in our view,” the Jefferies report added. Access to vast amounts of real-time data will give the RIL arm a big advantage, making it a tough competitor to other NBFCs, banks and fintechs, analysts say. “JFS will differ from most other fintechs, as it will have access to huge amounts of data, gathered from non-financial relationships; it can process and analyse this data in real time, to offer financial services, similar to Alibaba, Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google,” added the Jefferies report. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Here are the factors which could benefit JFS" comment="subhead" text="Here are the factors which could benefit JFS">Here are the factors which could benefit JFS</cmsannotation> According to the analysts at Macquarie Research, JFS has multiple factors which could help it go one up on the likes of Paytm and Bajaj Finance, among others. Reliance’s deep pockets mean that JFS will benefit from an AAA credit rating, which will help it in attracting funds at low costs when compared to its rivals. As of now, only six large non-banking financial companies (NBFC) have the AAA credit ratings – HDFC, Bajaj Finance, LIC Housing, Tata Capital, Aditya Birla Capital and HDB Financial. Other factors include highest capitalisation amongst large NBFCs, large distribution footprint thanks to Reliance, and the ability to attract top talent thanks to its parent being one of the largest conglomerates of India, according to the report. The last part has already played out – KV Kamath has been appointed as an independent director on the board of Reliance Industries, and the non-executive chairman of Reliance Strategic Investments, which will house JFS. One US dollar now costs ₹80. The impact will be felt by students going to the US, Australia and Canada. If a student takes a loan of $100,000, it would now amount to ₹8,000,000 instead of ₹7,000,000 last year. “Amidst the sharp fall in rupee against the US dollar, and the expense towards pursuing higher education abroad skyrocketing, availing the right education loan has become imperative for students and their parents, especially for countries like the United States, Australia and Canada.” Mahesh Shukla, CEO and Founder of lending app PayMe India, told Business Insider. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="It’s much worse for students already studying abroad" comment="subhead" text="It’s much worse for students already studying abroad">It’s much worse for students already studying abroad</cmsannotation> Ankit Mehra, the CEO and co-founder of non-banking financial company (NBFC) GyanDhan, noted that the situation could worsen by next year if the rupee continued its downward slide. The students who took the loan this year at the deprecated rate would at least be able to pay the tuition fee at that rate for the first year of education. The matter gets more complex for students who are already studying abroad. “A student who has been paying a fee of ₹65 per dollar in 2017 will now have to pay around ₹80 per dollar in 2022, thereby increasing his financial obligations significantly,” PayMe India’s Shukla said. The value of the rupee has depreciated about 7% in the last six months. Now, students who took education loans without any margins for currency depreciation could currently be at a shortfall of 7%, which is a really big margin to cover. If the value of the rupee depreciates any further, the students who went to study this year would be in a similar situation for their second year of education. Several lenders — including GyanDhan — have launched a top-up scheme offering additional funds to students. So much for the tuition fee. Students also have to worry about managing living expenses. “The countries that the student is eyeing to pursue higher education also matters amidst economic turmoil… Countries like Austria, Belgium, Germany and Norway also provide quality education, which might not get too much impacted by the exchange rate fluctuations,” Rachit Chawla, founder and CEO of an NBFC called Finway FSC, said. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Students repaying dollar loans feel the pinch" comment="subhead" text="Students repaying dollar loans feel the pinch">Students repaying dollar loans feel the pinch</cmsannotation> GyanDhan’s Mehra noted that the depreciation of rupee has an impact on three people — the students going to study, the students who are already studying abroad and the ones repaying the student loans. Individuals who took loans from an international lender in dollars and are currently earning in rupees owe much more to the banks. Meanwhile, the ones who took out a loan from an Indian lender and are earning in dollars are in a sweet spot, as they owe much less to the banks. “When students are going abroad they tend to compare two banks — let's say an Indian bank and an international lender — they just look at the (interest) rates,” Mehra noted, highlighting that an international lender would lend money in an international currency, which is subject to fluctuations. “Once they come back to India, they see that the 10% (interest rate) wasn’t really a 10%. It is actually a much different loan,” he added. ₹80 impact: Students going to study abroad will feel the pinch, but it is worse for students already there

Source: JPMorgan While other entrenched players like Big Basket and Grofers, who have been around for much longer, still have 7-8 times more app downloads, the rise of JioMart in the last six months only reflects the speed at which Ambani has tried to push his <keyword id="436047" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ecommerce">ecommerce</keyword> dream. Since its launch, in every three downloads of any online groceries app, two of them have been the one from the house of Reliance Industries (RIL). <div type="image" title="Jiomart downloads." msid="79922658" hostid="261"></div> Even the mightiest need to hustle sometimes JioMart in India sees competition from many players who have existed and dominated the Indian e-commerce market for a long time – including the likes of Amazon and Flipkart. And so, as Ambani, Asia’s richest man, threw his hat into this ring, he decided to go all out: both in the big cities of India and beyond. JioMart operates with an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/ecommerce/news/heres-what-gives-jiomart-an-edge-over-its-competitors-according-to-goldman-sachs/articleshow/79054698.cms">omnichannel</a> flow where it has tied up with kirana stores (mom-and-pop stores) and also uses inventory from Reliance Retail outlets. Ambani’s e-commerce bet made a soft launch in December 2019 in select areas of Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Kalyan. But as the coronavirus lockdown began and the opportunities in e-grocery became more evident, JioMart was quick to act and expanded to over 200 cities. This fast growth across India has given JioMart an early-mover advantage in India’s smaller towns, say analysts at JP Morgan. Given the progress of JioMart in the first year, analysts at JPMorgan peg that Reliance’s e-commerce business may earn an annual revenue of over $59 billion and the net worth may hit $145 billion in the next ten years. A Goldman Sachs report from November 2020 had pegged this omnichannel capability ⁠— using different channels for distribution, both online and offline ⁠— as the reason for JioMart’s growth. “India has 10 million kirana stores, which account for 90% of grocery retail in the country. JioMart has already launched in more than 200 cities, leveraging Reliance Retail’s store network, with kirana partnerships across 20 cities,” said the Goldman Sachs report. JioMart is not just stretching far and wide, it’s also building strength via partnerships and acquisitions Ambani is not just going for geographic expansion but he is also on a spending spree to boost JioMart’s offerings to its customers. According to JPMorgan, JioMart’s stock keeping units (SKU) is only second to Big Basket. However, the comparison didn’t include players like Flipkart, DMart and other new entrants like Swiggy and Zomato. JioMart, with access to the deep pockets of one of the world’s richest man – Mukesh Ambani, has managed to successfully partner up with another of the world’s richest man – Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook pumped in $5.7 billion into Reliance Jio in April 2020, with WhatsApp’s integration with JioMart being a prime focus of the deal. It’s set to be a win-win for both Ambani and Zuckerberg – where Reliance can take advantage of WhatsApp’s 400 million user base to acquire more customers. On the other hand, WhatsApp Pay, Facebook’s debut in the payments segment, will benefit from integrating with JioMart for payments. Another early acquisition made by the company was that of the Mumbai-based Grab-a-Grub. In 2019, Reliance pumped in $15 million for 83% stake in the hyperlocal delivery startup. Reliance has also acquired online pharmacy company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/with-reliance-buying-netmeds-and-pharmeasy-merging-with-medlife-amazon-and-flipkart-are-in-for-a-tougher-competition-than-they-would-like/articleshow/77625512.cms">NetMeds</a>, picked up a stake in online lingerie retailer Zivame, and online furniture retailer <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/retail/news/reliance-retail-acquires-urban-ladder-for-182-crore-at-a-sixth-of-the-startups-peak-valuation-in-2018/articleshow/79230550.cms">Urban Ladder</a>, all of which could further bolster its e-commerce foothold. The acquisition of Kishore Biyani’s Future Retail for almost ₹25,000 crore also gives JioMart access to BigBazaar stores across the country as well.
