<ul><li>Rising crude oil and gas prices during the last few quarters because of supply side constraints led by the Russia Ukraine crisis has benefited the oil producer to mint more money.</li><li><keyword id="6354737" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ongc" source="Orion">ONGC</keyword> enters the elite club of top most profitable companies in India as it makes a profit of ₹40,305 crore in FY22.</li><li>The oil producer has surpassed Tata Steel, TCS and HDFC Bank to reach the second position wherein Reliance Industries holds top position.</li></ul>State-owned oil explorer ONGC beat two Tata group firms - TCS and Tata Steel to become India’s second most profitable company, after Reliance Industries, in FY22. Its record profits came in spite of decline in production for the last 11-18 quarters, aging fields, and lack of new discoveries. However, crude oil prices soared to almost $140 a barrel - making even its low output very valuable. ONGC contributes to 70% of India’s total oil and gas production. “A rally in global crude oil and natural gas prices is a key driving factor behind ONGC’s profitability,” said a report by YES Securities. It added that any moderation in crude prices will affect its cash flows as its capex requirement is very high to maintain production in its aging fields. ONGC reported a net profit of ₹40,305 crore for FY22 surpassing Tata Steel, by a decent margin. It also beat one of India’s most valuable companies - TCS in terms of profits - after crude oil prices soared. <div type="image" title="top 5 companies col (1)" height="900" width="1200" msid="91890739" hostid="261"></div>Taxes, sanctions and more to affect ONGC profitability As expected, this rise in profitability might be unsustainable, especially since analysts believe that Russia-Ukraine tensions could settle down, cooling off the soaring crude. “ONGC’s performance depends on how long geopolitical tensions persist as its profits are directly connected to crude oil prices,” Sanjiv Bhasin, executive vice president, markets &amp; corporate affairs at India Infoline, told Business Insider India. Bhasin believes that these tensions will ease by mid-July. As soon as crude prices come down, so will ONGC’s place in the list of most profitable companies. “Brent will not sustain the $110 kind of level. One or two years down the line, Brent will cool down. The two year future market also shows prices cooling off about $80-$90 per barrel range so that will definitely impact the margins for ONGC,” Anshuman Khanna, the founding director of Valpro, told Business Insider India. While the advantages of the war might go away soon, its effects - like sanctions on Russia - could remain and can affect ONGC’s fortunes negatively. <div type="image" title="ongc (1)" height="900" width="1200" msid="91890758" hostid="261"></div>The Russian connection ONGC’s international arm, ONGC Videsh owns stakes in multiple energy assets in Russia. One of the country’s gas producing assets Sakhalin-I has already shown signs of trouble as US major Exxon said that it would exit the block. ONGC has a 20% stake in it, along with interests in Sakhalin II, and Vankor fields in Siberia. “Russian assets are facing two issues -- one is the fact that Russian crude is trading at a discount about $10-$20 to Brent and second issue is repatriation of Russian dividend from these assets because of sanctions. It’s a real risk, which could jeopardize their entire Russian investment,” Anshuman Khanna, the founding directors of Valpro, told Business Insider. The Indian government too isn’t allowing the state-owned oil explorer to enjoy its profits either. It is believed to collect some of it in the form of a <a href="http://theres-a-strong-case-to-levy-windfall-taxes-11653810086031.html">windfall tax on oil producing companies.</a> Analysts at Citi call this tax threat an overhang. There is speculation that the government might impose a 25% tax on profits of oil and gas producing companies as crude prices have surged over 50% in 2022. The stock has gained over the last one year, but does not reflect the positive impact of crude oil on its profits. Cochin Shipyard Cochin Shipyard’s board is scheduled to meet on January 4 to consider the declaration of interim dividend to the company’s equity shareholders for the financial year 2020-21. 3i Infotech IT firm 3i Infotech has entered into definitive agreements to sell its software products business to the funds advised by Apax Partners for ₹1,000 crore. The software products business will be acquired by a newly formed Azentio Software company, wholly-owned by the Apax Funds, a statement said. Reliance Capital Anil Ambani’s Reliance Group company, Reliance Capital on Monday raised objection to the proposed 33.12% stake sale of Prime Focus (PFL) by Credit Suisse to PFL’s promoter group at ₹44.15 per share. The debt-ridden firm, Reliance Capital, termed the proposed transaction as a blatant abuse of the purported rights by Credit Suisse under certain lending agreements with the RCAP Group, the company said in a statement. New Delhi, Oil sector public sector undertakings (PSUs) may have to bear a <keyword id="9705803" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="larger-share">larger share</keyword> of <keyword id="10488841" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="additional-dividend-payment">additional dividend payment</keyword> to the government this year with almost all companies falling behind on their capex plan for the current fiscal. As of November, the capex of PSU oil companies put together stands at ₹46,303 crore, less than 50% of the annual target of ₹98,522 crore. The government has asked companies to complete at least 75% of capex till the end of December quarter. But this looks highly unlikely now pushing the case for higher dividend payout. In meetings with PSUs, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had stressed on the need for PSUs to step up <keyword id="6355120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="investment">investment</keyword> during the time of the pandemic to boost overall sentiments and kickstart investment climate in the country. She had specifically urged companies to complete at least 75% of capex target by December-end and more than 100% by March. "It is a double whammy for PSUs now. They have to cough up more either through investments or through payment of additional dividends. It should also be seen that the companies are finding it difficult to meet capex targets given financial and project implementation constraints. Covid has severely dented demand and slowed project implementation. Consequently, there is already a strain on their resources that would get heightened as additional dividend would have to be paid," said a top official of a PSU, asking not to be named. While almost all PSUs are facing delays and difficulties in stepping up the gas and increasing investments, the situation among companies in the oil and gas sector looks worse. Slow demand conditions in early part of the year resulted in slowing of several capex plans. Though the situation has improved from November onwards, still its a long way to go for normalcy to return in the sector. For the government, oil sector PSUs are also set to make big inventory gains due to firming up of crude prices, and hence they are being looked at for higher interim dividend or special dividend and a few may also be considered for share buyback depending on market conditions. Among the oil and gas PSUs, the worse performer in terms of capex spend is the country's largest oil and gas explorer ONGC and largest public sector refiner <keyword id="6356834" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-oil-corporation">Indian Oil Corporation</keyword>. According to oil ministry's <keyword id="819806" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Petroleum-Planning-and-Analysis">Petroleum Planning and Analysis</keyword> Cell (PPAC), while ONGC had completed just ₹14,959 crore worth of capex upto November out of FY21 investment target of ₹32,502 crore, IOC's capex upto November is ₹12,104 crore against annual target of ₹26,233 crore. Similarly, HPCL has completed capex of ₹5,658 crore (upto November) against target of ₹11,500 crore; Gail India - ₹2,614 crore against annual target of ₹5,412 crore; Oil India - ₹2,136 crore vs ₹3,877 crore target; MRPL - ₹631 crore vs ₹1,150 crore, OVL - ₹3,765 crore vs ₹7,235 crore. Among the worst performer on capex is privatisation-bound <keyword id="155363" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Petroleum-Corporation-Ltd">Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd</keyword> (BPCL) which has spent just ₹3,716 crore against target of ₹9,000 crore. Officials sources said that PSUs with stock prices higher than the book value and who have sufficient cash funds may also be asked to shell higher dividend in FY21. A call will be taken after the third quarter results of companies are declared late January or early February next year. With the central government being the largest shareholders in PSUs, higher dividend would largely help it to fill its coffers at a time when revenue is constrained due to a overall fall in economic activity during the pandemic while expenditure has risen sharply. Dividend from non-financial PSUs have been budgeted at ₹65,747 crore in FY21. Any increase in this will give a boost to non-tax revenue of the government and help its bridge the rising fiscal deficit that as per initial estimate is now pegged close to 8% of GDP. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and her predecessors, including the late Arun Jaitley and P. Chidambaram, had maintained the policy of advising non-financial state-owned companies that if they are not utilising their cash reserves for capex needs, they should give it to the Centre through dividends or share buybacks. As per the guidelines issued by disinvestment department DIPAM, every CPSE is required to pay a minimum annual dividend of 30% of PAT or 5% of the net-worth, whichever is higher. Apart from oil sector, several PSUs in power and mining space have completed just about 40% annual capex by November due to constrained business environment. Cipla The pharma major Cipla launched generic Nintedanib used for the treatment of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) under the brand name ‘Nintib’ in India. IPF is a rare lung disease that impacts ten in one lakh people, but it is a chronic progressive form of lung disease with an average survival rate of three to five years if left untreated. The shares of Cipla ended flat on Tuesday. Motherson Sumi Motherson Sumi Systems (MSSL), through its Mexican subsidiary, has acquired the activities of Electrical Wiring Interconnection Systems (EWIS) performed at Bombardier Transportation’s manufacturing site in Huehuetoca, Mexico. The deal is valued around $10 million. The shares of Motherson Sumi ended 2% higher on Tuesday. Prabhat Dairy The markets regulator SEBI has directed Prabhat Dairy to cooperate with the forensic auditor and deposit over ₹1,292 crore in a nationalised bank within seven days until the conclusion of the audit. The auditor was appointed to ascertain manipulation of books of accounts of the firm, misrepresentation of financials or business operations by the company, wrongful diversion of funds by promoters. The shares of Prabhat Dairy ended 5% higher on Tuesday. Bajaj Auto The state-owned Life Insurance Corporation increased its stake in Bajaj Auto from 4.76% in the June quarter to 6.4% in the September quarter. The shares of Bajaj Auto ended 1% higher on Tuesday. L&amp;T Infotech (LTI) The IT major L&amp;T Infotech (LTI) reported a 26.7% increase in consolidated net profit to ₹456.8 crore for the quarter ended September 30. The company’s overall revenue grew 16.6% to ₹2,998.4 crore in the quarter under review. The shares of LTI ended 2% lower on Tuesday. Mastek The software major Mastek’s UK subsidiary has sold its entire stake in Majesco’s US subsidiary for a total value of $32.3 million. The company aims to use the funds for helping the UK arm drive its growth strategy and reduce borrowings. The shares of Mastek ended 1% higher on Tuesday. Equitas Small Finance Bank The ₹518 crore IPO of Equitas Small Finance Bank has so far seen a subdued response from the investors. Tata Motors Tata Motors-owned subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) reported a 12% dip in sales in the second quarter ended September 30. However, the sales improved by nearly 50% during the July-September quarter as against 74,067 units in the April-June period of the current fiscal, the company said in a statement. The shares of Tata Motors ended 0.52% higher yesterday. Britannia Industries Bakery and dairy products major Britannia Industries said its board has approved issuing bonus debentures and payment of dividend to reward its shareholders in such difficult and unprecedented times due to the coronavirus pandemic. The board approved 1 bonus debenture for 1 share held, and payment of ₹12.5/share as dividend. The shares of Britannia Industries ended 0.56% higher yesterday. Deepak Fertilisers and Petrochemicals The wholly-owned arm of Deepak Fertilisers and Petrochemicals, Smartchem Tech, raised ₹105 crore via debentures from international finance corporation. A debenture is a loan that is issued to corporates based on their reputation at a fixed rate of interest. The shares of Deepak Fertilisers and Petrochemicals ended 2.3% lower yesterday. Future Consumer Future Capital Investment, the promoter of Future Consumer, invoked pledge of 18 lakh shares from September 14-16. The shares of Future Consumer ended 4% lower on Monday. Infibeam Avenues and RIL The digital payments, e-commerce software company Infibeam Avenues has entered into a definitive agreement with Jio Platforms and its affiliates. The shares of Infibeam Avenues were locked in 5% upper circuit on Monday. Escorts The automaker Escorts has completed the acquisition of 2 crore equity shares of KAI from KBT, constituting 40% of the share capital of KAI for an aggregate value of ₹90 crore. The shares of Escorts ended 3.32% higher on Monday. Majesco The board of Majesco will consider a proposal for buyback of fully paid-up equity shares on October 8. New Delhi, Apr 28 () Billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) will on Thursday consider a rights issue - the first such issue in nearly three decades - as it steps up efforts to pare debt. The Board of the country's largest company will meet on April 30 to consider and approve audited financial results of the firm for the quarter and year ended March 31 as also to recommend dividend, RIL said in a regulatory filing. It would also "consider a proposal to issue equity shares to existing shareholders on Rights basis, as may be permitted under applicable law, subject to such regulatory/statutory approvals, as may be required," the company said without giving details. The move comes within days of RIL agreeing to sell 9.99 per cent stake in its digital platform to Facebook Inc for USD 5.7 billion or Rs 43,574 crore. Ambani had in August last year unveiled plans to cut debt to zero by 2021. As part of this plan, RIL has been seeking strategic partnerships across its businesses while targeting to deleverage the balance sheet. At the end of December quarter, RIL had an outstanding debt of Rs 3,06,851 crore. It also had cash in hand of Rs 1,53,719 crore, bringing the net debt position to Rs 1,53,132 crore. Analysts expect dilution of at least 5 per cent through the rights issue. In other words, each shareholder will be entitled to apply for five new shares for every 100 shares held. This will help RIL raise about Rs 40,000 crore, assuming some discount to the current trading price. Typically, cash-strapped companies use rights issues to raise money when they really need it. In these rights offerings, companies grant shareholders the right, but not the obligation, to buy new shares at a discount to the current trading price. The last time RIL tapped the public for funds was in 1991 when it had issued convertible debentures. The debentures were subsequently converted into equity shares at Rs 55 apiece. As part of its balancesheet deleveraging plans, RIL is talking to Saudi Aramco for selling a fifth of its oil-to-chemicals business for an asking of USD 15 billion and has sold half of its fuel retail venture to BP Plc for Rs 7,000 crore and telecommunication tower business to Brookfield for Rs 25,200 crore. But the crash in oil prices has created uncertainty over the timeline for the completion of the Aramco deal. On August 12, 2019, RIL announced that it has signed a non-binding letter of intent to sell a 20 per cent stake in its oil-to-chemical (O2C) business to Saudi Aramco. The O2C business, which has an enterprise valuation of USD 75 billion, includes RIL's refining and petrochemical divisions, and RIL's 51 per cent stake in its fuel marketing business. The company had sold a 49 per cent stake in its fuel marketing business in India to BP Plc for USD 1 billion. In July 2019, RIL announced the sale of its telecommunications tower business - which was already transferred to the investment infrastructure trust, InvIT, to Brookfield Asset Management Inc for Rs 25,200 crore. Together, proceeds from these transactions will result in a reduction in RIL's net debt. ANZ ANZ ANUANU

The week gone by continued to be volatile and all gains built up during the course of the first four days were lost and even more, on Friday. The week ended with BSE SENSEX losing 163.23 points or 0.43 per cent to close at 37877.34 points while NIFTY lost 35.65 points or 0.32 per cent to close at 11,178.40 points. The broader indices saw BSE100 lose 0.03 per cent while BSE200 and BSE500 gained 0.03 per cent and 0.18 per cent respectively. BSEMIDCAP was up 1.51 per cent while BSESMALLCAP was up 1.36 per cent. This kind of difference where the benchmark indices are in the red and the broader indices are in positive, has happened after a very long time. Normally the trend is clear and all indices are either positive or negative, not some positive and some negative. The Indian Rupee gained 3 paisa or 0.04 per cent to close at Rs 74.90 to the US Dollar. Dow jones had a good week and gained 497.54 points or 1.81 per cent to close at 27,931.02 points. The Indian indices gained on two days and lost on three days with Friday being the sharp loser and BSESENSEX losing 467 points and NIFTY 122 points. What is significant is the fact that markets were gaining and in the positive till Friday happened. RBI has agreed to pay to the government Rs 57,128 crores as dividend for 2019-2020. ICICI has successfully completed its QIP for Rs 15,000 crores at a price of Rs 358. Th share had closed at Rs 361.45 on Friday, a weekly gain of Rs 3.60 or 1.01 per cent. The Supreme Court hearing the AGR matter in case of telecom companies has come to the issue of Reliance industries and Reliance Communications. The spectrum was allotted to the erstwhile telecom company which was a part of Reliance Industries and then was split when the family division happened. Post Reliance Communications going belly-up and exiting the telecom business, it entered into a spectrum deal with Jio. The Supreme court is asking for the payment of Rs 31,000 crores towards the spectrum dues. Readers would recall that Reliance Jio had taken over the assets and liabilities of Reliance Communications Limited at almost zero value as it had agreed to take over the liabilities as well. This could affect the share prices when trading begins on Monday. Shares of Reliance industries had closed at Rs 2,114 a loss of Rs 33 or 1.54 per cent for the week when trading ended on Friday. Shares of Yes Bank hit a high of Rs 17.16 before profit taking saw the share fall, and close at Rs 15.07, a weekly gain of Rs 0.93 or 7.39 per cent. The share has now entered a trading zone and would move between 13.5-16 over the next couple of weeks till news flow about the performance of the bank post fund raising are known. IHH, the Malaysian based company which had acquired Fortis Healthcare has proposed in the board meeting to change the name of the company to Parkway from the present name and disassociate itself from the Singh brothers in all manners. This proposed change is of course subject to regulatory approvals and the Supreme Court, where there is a matter of the open offer also pending. As and when this issue is resolved, the company would have renamed itself with a brand which is operating in more than 10 countries and is predominantly a South Asian group of hospital chain. The share has been seeing steady accumulation on expectation of the open offer currently stayed by the Supreme Court being cleared. Shares had closed at Rs 135.80, down Rs 2.15 or 1.56 per cent. Coming to the Covid-19 front, the world saw 216,17,987 patients, 7,69,006 deaths and 143,34,222 people recovering. In India, there were 25,90,501 patients, 50,099 deaths and 18,62,665 people recovering. Compared to the previous week, the world saw 18,06,240 new patients, 39,345 deaths and 16,08,074 people recovering. This effectively meant that 89.02 per cent of the patients added during the week have recovered overall. In India, there were 4,34,058 new patients, 6,611 deaths and 3,80,999 patients recovering. The recovery rate for the week was 87.77 per cent. Decent improvement in the recovery rate and one hopes and prays that work on the vaccine, which is globally on a war footing fructifies. The week ahead would see markets open on a weak note and Reliance is likely to be under pressure on the AGR news. Markets would face resistance at the previous week's high of 38,556 points and 11,366 on NIFTY. Incidentally, while BSESENSEX failed to cross the recent high of 38,617 points, NIFTY did cross 11,341 points. These levels would be difficult to cross currently and would become a resistance for the time being. On the downside, we would find support at 37,000 on BSESENSEX and at 10,900 points on NIFTY if not earlier. The strategy would be to buy on sharp dips or wait for the fall.
