This would be good news for many and may also help reduce corruption in the issuance of commercial licenses. Up till now, people had to first get a private licence and then wait one year to get the commercial licence. This roundabout way has been done away with, however, the commercial driving licence remains mandatory for those driving trucks, buses and other heavy commercial vehicles. That said, there are some inhibitions that this move will increase congestion on the roads. Anil Chikkara, an expert on transport issues, told <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/commercial-driving-licence-not-needed-for-taxis-autos/articleshow/63822859.cms">The Times Of India</a>, “In an ideal condition, one cab replaces at least six private cars and an autorickshaw substitutes over a dozen cars since these are on the move and need little parking space.” And by that logic, this move will help ease the problem. Chikkara’s comment is echoed in a study by <keyword id="136162" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Boston-Consulting-Group">Boston Consulting Group</keyword> commissioned by <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword>, which says ridesharing could help deal with a mammoth problem - parking. If embraced, 760 to 22,000 acres of parking space in four primary cities -- Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Bangalore -- could be used for other purposes. In Delhi alone, up to 22,369 acres of space can be saved by adopting rideshare (assuming rideshare substitutes for private cars), which is almost 4 times the size of Indira Gandhi Airport. According to the report, peak congestion in cities averages 149% which is substantially higher than other comparable cities around Asia. Commuters take 1.5 times longer to travel a given distance during peak hours, compared to travel time during non-peak hours. This is currently estimated to cost a whopping $22 billion per year - and that is only in the four primary cities. We can unlock our cities and their full potential, but we have to do it together.” A few years back, an average city dweller would baulk at the idea of sharing their taxi with anyone. Cut to 2017-2018, not only is ridesharing becoming acceptable, many in fact consider it to be a preferred way to travel. According to the report, over 79% of the respondents from the four primary cities -- Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Bangalore -- who plan to buy a car in the next five years said that they would reconsider the move, should the affordability and convenience of ridesharing match or exceed that of owning a car. The move will, of course, help Uber and <keyword id="6354720" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola">Ola</keyword>, who have been trying to push ridesharing in the countries. Not requiring a commercial license will likely help the companies ramp up the number of drivers who sign up for their services.

Under the City Taxi Scheme 2017, cabs are only allowed to pick up and drop passengers from one point to the next. Experts believe that one of the reasons is the focus on ride-sharing. The ban could either be good for the companies if customers shift to solo rides. Or, bad if customers choose to shift to public transport altogether or find other alternative means of transportation. Other issues on the table In reviewing the regulations for cabs in the Indian national capital, the committee is also discussing the issue of green fuels and permits. Possible outcomes include enforcing that cabs only use fuels like CNG or LPG and providing proof of parking before applying for a permit. The biggest development to come is probably the tracking of cabs. Currently, cabs in the city aren’t monitored as they pick up and drop passengers. But the committee is considering adding GPS monitoring to the roster, not only for cabs in Delhi but for cabs that are registered in other states while operating within the city. For actual customers, the issues of greater relevance are the ‘panic’ button that will soon become a mandatory feature in cabs and putting a cap on the maximum fare that companies can charge from customers. If the scheme also goes through with its plan of limiting the number of cabs that can be put on call by a cab operator, the demand-supply disparity might even increase the overall prices in the market. The committee, that includes the transport minister Kailash Gahlot and Satyender Jain, a minister at the Public Works Department, is currently reviewing the City Taxi Scheme 2017, Licensing and Regulation of App-based Cab Aggregator Rules 2017 and app-based premium bus services. Sources have told Times of <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> that this the committee is unlikely to rule in the favour of companies being allowed to operate ride-sharing in Delhi. They were originally supposed to come to a decision on Monday, but that has now be deferred to a date that is yet to be decided.

A division bench of Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Neena Bansal Krishna directed the Transport Department to refrain from taking any coercive measures against Rapido and other ride-sharing platforms until a comprehensive policy is formulated. In February, the app-based aggregators were prevented from plying bike taxis on the road without commercial permits. The Transport Department, ordering an immediate halt to the bike taxi services provided by these platforms, had warned that any violation will result in penal action. The public notice by the Transport Department said that the companies defying the orders will be fined up to Rs 1 lakh, as the use of bikes for commercial purposes violated the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Following the High Court decision, Uber has expressed its gratitude towards the court's order providing protection to the company against coercive actions regarding its bike taxi service in the capital city. "We welcome the High Court's order to give Uber protection from coercive action on bike taxis in Delhi. This will bring relief to drivers on our platform whose livelihood had been impacted by the ban as also to the hundreds and thousands of riders who choose to ride on Moto for affordability and last mile connectivity. We are committed to serving the city and being the platform of choice for riders and drivers alike," said Uber in a statement. 	You connect travelers, but do not charge a free. Could you explain how BlaBla Car is benefiting from this ridesharing concept?
 

	BlaBlaCar enables car-owners with empty seats in their cars to share them with co-travellers going the same way and share the cost of the trip. We are present in 20 countries, and have a global member base of 20 million people. In India, we have seen members enrol with us from across 700 cities! At this time, we don’t monetize in India. At a later stage, we will start charging a fee on co-travellers, however, for car owners it is a free service and would continue to be. 
 

	What kind of safety measures do you have to ensure security of both the parties? 
 

	We do some hard and soft verifications, but what works well in India is the rating system. So, when people are travelling with each other, they can rate each other on the experience. Every new person can see how the experience has been of fellow co-travellers with a particular person. Moreover apart from hardchecks, there are social profiles (showing music, interests, hobbies etc) for both the parties to see. So, in a 1-hour long travel, you want to have a comfortable journey. Lot of people with BlaBlaCar now end up travelling with owners who they share interests with and feel comfortable.

Claiming that they only get Rs 6/km from every ride, the strikers are demanding that these companies pay them the government sanctioned fare. 
 
"They reeled us in by promising earnings of more than 1 lakh per month and now because of falling fares, we do not even have the money to feed our families properly. We are demanding that we receive the fare sanctioned by the government which is Rs 21/km. First, they induced us to buy cars under their schemes now they are adding so many new cars that it has become difficult for us to pay off our monthly installments," a senior member of the association, Kamal Rathore, told ET. 
 
The agitated drivers are demanding better perks, relaxed hours and accident insurance. 
 
"Ride-sharing has to be stopped. Out of 10 trips we get in a day, eight of them are of sharing. This drops our already weak earning to Rs 3/km. The companies can give as much discount as they want to the customers but they should not make us suffer for it," Rathore told ET.

Passengers hit hard as Uber and Ola drivers go on strike in Delhi-NCR

As Uber's reach widens, so do the company's legal troubles.
Several southeast Asian countries are questioning Uber's legality in light of allegations that a driver raped a young female passenger in India.
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-banned-in-delhi-india-after-alleged-rape-2014-12">New Delhi has banned the ride-sharing service</a>, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/thailand-bans-uber-in-light-of-india-rape-claims-2014-12">Thailand soon followed suit</a>. The company is also facing scrutiny in Vietnam, Singapore and Indonesia. And Indian police are reportedly considering taking legal action against Uber, claiming the company hasn't run proper background checks.
Officials are concerned that drivers picking up passengers from the Uber app in these countries aren't adhering to the same licensing regulations as other drivers.
Nevertheless, Uber recently raised more funding and is now valued at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-just-raised-12-billion-2014-12">$40 billion</a>.

The Netherlands banned Uber because drivers don't have special licenses to allow them to pick up passengers. Uber is planning to appeal the ban, <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/12/08/uber-netherlands-idUSL6N0TS1SI20141208">according to</a> Reuters.
Portland <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/portland-sues-uber-after-four-days-of-operation-2014-12">sued Uber on Monday</a> shortly after the company began operations in the city, claiming that it's an "illegal, unregulated <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> service."
Uber <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/11/27/us-usa-nevada-ridesharing-idUSKCN0JB18J20141127">suspended operations in Nevada last month</a> after a district court issued a preliminary injunction preventing the service from providing rides across the state. The injunction was reportedly spurred by regulatory concerns, according to Reuters.

Here's Where Uber Operates And Where It Is Banned

Gone are the days when you had to contact the local travel agency to get a cab or hail one off the road or the neighborhood taxi stand. The proliferation of radio cab services across several major cities in India has allowed seamless booking of cabs anytime and anywhere over a call, and now through smartphone <keyword id="6354741" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apps">apps</keyword>. 
 
Uber 
 
The San Francisco-based transportation network company prefers to position itself as a technology company that offers mobile apps to connect passengers with drivers of vehicles for hire and ridesharing services. 
 The service was recently launched in India, and offers two tiers of cars for hire – UberBLACK and uberX – appealing to a broader cross-section of the market. The service, which has grown to 10 cities, is already making India the biggest market for Uber outside of the <keyword id="6356955" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-states">United States</keyword>. 
 You need to sign up using the app with your credit card (some debit cards work too). The app shows the estimated time of arrival (ETA) of available cars around you. Once you book it, you can track the reserved car’s location on a map and contact the <keyword id="6366401" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Driver">driver</keyword> as well. After the ride, the amount is debited from the linked card and you don’t have to pay any cash to the driver. The app also allows ridesharing, so two friends sharing a ride can split the fare between two seamlessly. 
 
Uber is a great way to ‘hail a cab’ via an app. But you cannot book one in advance, and that sometimes is a concern, for example: you don’t want to leave a booking till last minute for a 4 am flight. 
 
Meru Cabs 
 Meru Cabs is one of the most popular and earliest radio cabs service in India. The fleet service provides services in seven cities - Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword>, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Chennai – with two fleet levels, Meru and Meru Plus. 
 Unlike Uber, the Meru Cabs app is only needed for booking the cab. Once the cab has been booked and you’ve contacted the driver, you don’t need the app for the ride. Of course it’s good to have to check out route details and share <keyword id="154361" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="feedback">feedback</keyword>, but it’s not required. The meter is available in the car and you need to pay off the driver at the end of the trip. 
 
Also, the app allows you book a cab for a trip right away (within 35 minutes) or in advance beyond 35 minutes for up to 3 days. You can also check out you booking history from within the app. 
 
Mega Cabs 
 
Similar to Meru Cabs in service and app experience, Mega Cabs is also one of the early radio cabs service in the country. The only difference is that Mega Cabs does not have fleet/car options, and has a unified fare. 
 With presence in six cities – Delhi NCR, <keyword id="6354925" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kolkata">Kolkata</keyword>, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Amritsar, and Ludhiana – the company claims to be India’s largest taxi service network. 
 
Olacabs 
 
Ola is quite simply the Indian Uber and has quickly grown to serve 10 cities already. Modelled on the latter, Olacabs does not own its own fleet and partners with car rental services making their cars for hire available through the app. Like Uber, there are two fleet levels, sedan and mini, and even the referral credit is the same Rs 300! 
 
Of course, the Indian company takes care of lack of penetration of credit cards in the country. You can recharge your account to keep ‘Ola Money’ in your account for frequent payments, or pay cash to the driver at the end of the trip. Also, my only gripe with Uber is taken care of as you can make a booking in advance as well. 
 
TaxiForSure 
 The latest entrant in the market, TaxiForSure, intends to bring affordable <keyword id="160739" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cab-service">cab service</keyword> to the masses, with fares that are slightly less than the options above. Available in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi NCR, Ahmedabad, and Baroda, the service offers the option of a hatchback or sedan in most cities. 
 
Like other services, you could book a cab for a trip right away or make a booking in advance. However, the ‘right away’ is not clearly defined and there’s no way to specify an exact time. If you are making an immediate booking, you could be offered a cab in the next ten minutes or an hour later.

Shiv Kumar Yadav, the Uber driver who's been accused of raping a young female passenger, is scheduled to appear in Indian court on Monday, AFP <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-indian-uber-driver-accused-of-rape-previously-arrested-for-assault-2014-12">reports</a>. The man was arrested for another sexual assault three years ago and eventually acquitted of the crime, but he was still allowed to drive for Uber.
Uber CEO Travis Kalanick has said that Indian systems lack a process to "to establish clear background checks," <a href="https://twitter.com/DeccanChronicle/status/541878412579573760">according to</a> the Deccan Chronicle.
Indian police are reportedly considering taking legal action against Uber, claiming that the company hasn't run proper background checks.
Delhi's government <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/afp-delhi-city-government-bans-uber-after-alleged-rape-2014-12">said in a statement</a> that "(the) Transport Department has banned all activities relating to providing any transport service by the www.Uber.com with immediate effect."
The woman who accused the Uber driver of rape said he dropped her off after he assaulted her and told her not to go to police. She reportedly took down the driver's number and snapped a photo of his car, according to AFP.
Uber recently raised more funding and is now valued at $40 billion.

Both NASA and SpaceX benefit from this enhanced interaction by ensuring all parties involved are fully aware of the exact location of spacecraft and debris in orbit. SpaceX has agreed its Starlink satellites will autonomously or manually manoeuvre to ensure the missions of NASA science satellites and other assets can operate uninterrupted from a collision avoidance perspective. Unless otherwise informed by SpaceX, NASA has agreed to not manoeuvre its assets in the event of a potential conjunction to ensure the parties do not inadvertently manoeuvre into one another.
