Makarim himself is one of the country’s richest entrepreneurs. “Nadiem was summoned to the Palace by the President today to accept an appointment as a member of the new cabinet. An accelerator program is a cohort-based one which helps entrepreneurs find their way into the startup world through mentorship, networking and funding. The empoWer accelerator program’s 3rd cohort concluded on March 29 and saw women in <keyword id="6355118" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="technology">technology</keyword> take a leap in business. Over the course of 3 years, through three cohorts 24 women have got equity free seed funding from the program. "Till date we have invested just about INR 2 Crores through empoWer but, the 2 past cohorts have cumulatively raised in excess of INR 40 Crores and there have been 3 acquisitions. Being through such a program and getting grant funding, definitely puts theses entrepreneurs in good stead while pitching to other investors. It is also 'validation capital' from the program,” said Ajay Ramasubramaniam director India, Zone Startups. Of the 18 winners from the latest cohort, 7 were further awarded a 1-week market access trip to Montreal by Government of Quebec. Focusing on areas such as Deep Tech, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Enterprise Mobility, Search &amp; Feedback Engines, Enterprise Software, over the 6-month program, the founders were introduced to over 90 mentors and industry leaders. From startups that are working on a device that will analyse soil health to give a quantitative estimate of nutrients present in the soil to ones that focus on women health and hygiene and even a startup that simplifies manufacturing of steel alloys, aluminium alloys etc., there was a varied range of innovation seen as a part of the accelerator program. India is the world’s third largest startup ecosystem and still sees that <a href="https://scroll.in/article/887200/india-the-worlds-fastest-growing-startup-ecosystem-has-little-space-for-female-entrepreneurs">only 9%</a> of the startup founders in the country today are women. The Indian government has introduced several schemes like Mudra Yojana Scheme For Women which provides loans to women entrepreneurs. 18 Indian women just got funding for their technology startups

The spotlight has been on <keyword id="1105689" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Women-entrepreneurs-in-India">women entrepreneurs in India</keyword> recently. Women-led new age startups have been the toast of the town, such as LimeRoad by Suchi Mukherjee, Sheroes by Sairee Chahal, Zivame by Richa Kar, YourStory by Shraddha Sharma, Wedmegood by Mehak Shahani and mydala by Anisha Singh to name a few. Studies have pronounced a 50 per cent growth in women entrepreneurs in just one year, and accolades have been pouring in on women entrepreneurs for their new found successes in the world of business. 
 
Before we get carried away with this polite applause, think again! The phenomenon of women entrepreneurship in India is not new. Look around. You might not see too many in the stratosphere of Kiran Mazumdar Shaw but you will see no dearth of women entrepreneurs in lifestyle businesses like beauty, fashion, gems &amp; jewels, education, food, logistics, social enterprises. They have just been outside the radar of the new-age definition of startup entrepreneurs. 
 
So what’s new? The fact that women in India are ready to play a new game in business: The game of big, scalable startups funded by private investors. 
 
Let me be clear at the outset. I do not differentiate between the different kind of women entrepreneurs. I believe any woman in business faces the same challenges and is driven by the same entrepreneurial spirit. The difference lies in the sport they choose among the vast selection in business – and that decides the rules of the game. Here’s my Hi-5 to women preparing to grow and build in this new arena. 
 
Pick the sport &amp; master the rules 
While local lifestyle businesses can be played as an individual sport – the neighbourhood boutique, the local beauty parlour, the customized jewelry designer – the startup business built on funding from venture capitalists is totally different. This is a competitive team sport. Played on a large playing field. And women in India are ready to break through the old boys’ network to make their mark here. They just need to be clear about the sport they are picking and be the best in it. Understand that this is a game of scale. This is a game where the VC enters only to exit – at a profit. These cannot be played like a lifestyle or family-based business. 
 
According to The emergence of the Millipreneurs a recent <a href="http://www.bnpparibas.com/en/news/bnp-paribas-global-entrepreneurs-report-2016">report</a> by BNP Paribas, worldwide women entrepreneurs are a little more successful today as they are more ambitious than their male counterparts. In India’s bounding startup ecosystem, women entrepreneurs could learn from this and pursue larger than life goals without fear. And to do so successfully, women must reinvent themselves and break out of the typecast accorded to them. 
 
Get off the emotional roller-coaster 
Simply put, a VC-funded business is a game played from the head, not heart. Yes, of course passion is important. But if I was to put a weightage to it, I would say building a successful business in 30% Passion and 70% hardcore numbers. 
 
I have accompanied several women startup founders to their meetings with investors and VCs. Having witnessed the discussion as a silent observer, I truly believe we undersell ourselves, and do not do justice to our potential. My tip to them: Get over the shyness! Don’t trip over your emotional story. Be a consummate professional. It takes just a few simple steps, to achieve a metamorphosis from a timid chrysalis to a self-assured butterfly who can hold her own in the colossal arena of big business. 
 
Project your confidence 
Even the most hardened male entrepreneur admits to nervousness while pitching to investors. It’s only normal. The trick is to project an image of confidence. And this can be done by doing your homework. Just as you practice pitches to win new business, you need to perfect the pitch to investors and VCs. 
 
In a KPMG <a href="http://www.kpmg-institutes.com/institutes/global-enterprise-institute/articles/2015/10/women-entrepreneurs-passion-purpose-and-perseverance.html">report</a> Women Entrepreneurs: Passion, Purpose, Perseverence, a whopping 83 percent of women entrepreneurs ranked self-confidence as a must have trait for successful leadership. Confidence goes hand in hand with risk taking, enabling the bold decisions, deemed necessary in today’s disruptive environment. 
 
Speak the language 
Big business has a certain innate and unchanging dialect. You need to master this language. 
 
No matter what your weakness, be it finance or technology or anything else, get over with it. Get comfortable with “valuation” and “share of wallet”. Lead and participate in a smooth dialogue on cash flows, income projections, budgeting, cost efficiencies, risk analysis, financial modeling and even digital transformation. Take a colleague/advisor along if necessary to these meetings. 
 
A Deloitte <a href="http://www2.deloitte.com/global/en/pages/about-deloitte/articles/women-entrepreneurs-report.html">report</a> recently pointed out that despite being more responsible borrowers, women face higher barriers in accessing capital. This disparity is the result of a complex interaction of factors, including the way private equity works, the way financial institutions operate, and the behavior of women themselves. 
 
Yes, the financial system needs to change its bias, but women themselves need to blaze through this bias by mastering the game themselves. So, test yourself, over and over again, take feedback, make the necessary changes. And at that all important meeting, lead the discussion and break the typecast! 
 
Learn to network 
Last but definitely not the least, you need to remember that to be successful at scale, you need to go beyond your own resources. Networking can get you access to knowledge, opportunities, capital, mentorship, even other startups that you can partner with in the ecosystem. Ever wonder why all the IIT and IIM graduates seem to do so well? Is it just the magic of their curriculum or their brains? Not to undermine either, the third big factor is their ready access to a core group – a strong alumni network. 
 
In India, women have traditionally been the window to the extended family or the neighbourhood community. Yet, in business, I have often met women entrepreneurs who confess that they find it difficult to network and think it is a waste of time. My advice to them is, weave that web of influence. Networking does not necessarily imply extending work-hours and neglecting your family. Be smart about it. Leverage your lunch-hour. Take small steps. But do not limit yourself by trying to go it alone. The power of a network can add exponentially to your strength. It is a necessary component of scaling up. 
 
There is heartening support for women entrepreneurs coming in from various directions today. The TiE Special Interest Group for Women Entrepreneurs, TiE Stree Shakti, <a href="http://www.nasscom.in/readying-women-entrepreneurship?fg=880017">Girls in Tech</a> programme by Nasscom, the funding of women ventures promised under <a href="http://pib.nic.in/newsite/PrintRelease.aspx?relid=134220">Standup India</a>, the special focus on women entrepreneurs at an event like <a href="http://www.lhrunwaytosuccess.in/startupexpo/">The Startup Expo</a>. And the launch of a <a href="http://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/now-a-venture-fund-for-women-entrepreneurs-115091400024_1.html">VC fund</a> focused exclusively on women entrepreneurs. While this is all adding to the momentum, there are miles to go. 
 
The battle of the woman entrepreneur in the Indian startup ecosystem is still herculean as she breaks long held perceptions, cultural biases and typecasts. But it is important that she continues to push past these to chase her dreams. I believe the success factor lies in an important shift in mindset of women themselves: We need to own our destiny. At the end of the day, only we are going to write our future.

 Investors, today, are more open towards investing in an innovative idea than ever before. However, it is also crucial for <keyword id="53533" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="entrepreneurs">entrepreneurs</keyword> to understand the investors’ psyche in order to succeed in their pitch to raise capital. 
 <keyword id="6365770" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="angel-investors">Angel investors</keyword> who are investing in businesses could have multiple objectives. While some are looking to make a difference by supporting unique business ventures, which have a potential to bring about a societal change, others are looking for a way to give back to the community by sharing their knowledge of running a business or just as a means of staying connected to their industry. 
 
Then there are those who are looking purely for a good return on investment. 
 
In all cases, the secret to their success is to put their money in businesses that will pay highest returns. Intelligent investors always plan to exit the businesses they invest in, typically, three to five years, which means they have an exit strategy even before they begin their journey with the startup. Although, an angel investor is open to taking risks but with high levels of expectations from the entrepreneurs’ abilities to run the business and make it profitable. There are some traits that are common amongst most angel investors. 
 
Play as a team 
Most professional angel investors invest as part of a team. This ensures that when they invest in a business, thorough evaluation and validation of the business model is done collectively. The investors, collectively, also bring along experience of having seen several businesses grow, hence entrepreneurs get access to the resources and advisory that they bring along. However, it is important to remember that they will only work behind the curtains. 
 
Reliable mentor 
Successful angel investors mostly have lot of knowledge and experience by having worked very closely with several businesses, however, remain highly enthusiastic about learning new things. This makes them a reliable knowledge pool and think-tank for the entrepreneurs which they can utilise by frequently consulting them on their business plans. 
 
Strategists 
Investing into businesses with an unpredictable future is a considerably big risk which is definitely not an easy decision. While the investors are ready to take that risk, they, in most cases, have a strategy in mind for the venture to be able to give healthy returns. It is important for any entrepreneur to understand and align business strategies with the assumptions and expectations of the investors to avoid difference of opinions at any stage. This can only happen through constant discussions and counseling. 
 
It is clear that an angel investor will not invest into a business till he/she is totally convinced of its potential to be profitable. They will not necessarily ask, but it is important for the entrepreneur to answer the questions they might have in their minds. There are few key criteria that they evaluate the business models on. 
 
The core 
The core of any venture is the idea behind it and it is crucial that it has the potential to create space for itself in the market, all the more important in a competitive market like India. The business should either be addressing a prevalent need or be able to create a segment in itself. Scalability and a considerable prospective consumer base are also important for future expansion. 
 
Ability of the entrepreneur 
Businesses are run by people and investors understand this fact very well. Hence, it is almost certain that any investor will assess and evaluate the people involved with a venture before investing in it. Investors prefer associating with people who are not just passionate about the idea but also have the skill sets to carry out the business. This is one of the most crucial aspects that I judge start-ups on, before associating with them. Since most investors are seasoned entrepreneurs themselves, they prefer associating with teams who are open to learning from their experiences also. 
 
A convincing presentation 
Any successful investor goes through a large number of business plans on a daily basis and does not always have the luxury of time while evaluating one. Hence, it is crucial to present the business model in the most effective, realistic way highlighting the most important aspects of the business like the core idea, market scenario, go-to-market approach and details of the financials. This helps them get the complete picture in a snapshot, hence enabling them to take an informed decision. 
 
Profitability 
Return on investment is an investor’s aim from associating with the start-up venture; hence, this becomes the most crucial aspect for them. It is important to show them a realistic picture of the possible returns and profitability of the business model in order to help them take a decision. While most investors prefer investing in the industry of their experience, however, are usually open to exploring newer and promising industries. 
 
The exit route 
As I have mentioned above, angel investors plan their exit well before entering a venture, hence they are constantly planning ahead. Most of them have a well thought of time-period in mind for their exit which can be anything from three to five years.

It was my first pitch ever and I wanted to cry,” Tekriwal told Business Insider India in an interview. The idea to start her company, JetSetGo, came from the thought of private flying as more accessible and economical for people. Before her startup, it was a long, cumbersome process where people lost money and faced many hiccups. Her company, however, turned this process online, transparent and allowed people to ‘share’ rides. “The idea came out of the combination of prior experiences and learning where I saw what was happening in the UK and in India, and there is a big gap that needs to be fulfilled and I went about it,” Tekriwal said. The first roadblock to doing business in the air was registration. “When I wanted to register the company, the people in the registrar office didn’t want to give me the certificate of incorporation simply because it had the word ‘aviation’ in it and asked me to go and get DGCA approval. Why would DGCA give me an approval for a company? I wanted to do trading,” she highlighted. Then came another difficult period in her young life when she was diagnosed with cancer. “I had the idea brewing in my head for close to three years or so, but when I took out my sketch board and started working on it, I was diagnosed with cancer, which set me back by a year,” said Tekriwal. After she became cancer-free in 2012, she kickstarted the business with her friend, <keyword id="2963933" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sudheer-perla" source="Orion">Sudheer Perla</keyword>, starting with air taxi services that provide intra-city connectivity. After ten years, she owns ten private jets after seven last year. During the time, the company added another interesting set of jet-setting travellers – startup founder, says Tekriwal, who was amazed at the trend. Also, those who want to splurge on a private jet for leisure trips too has doubled since January 2020. “When the Maldives opened in December last year, everyone was running there on private jets. Now it's Dubai. In India, Goa, Rajasthan, and Kerala are the top leisure destinations,” she added. The Indian startup ecosystem has seen a lot of change in the last few months. This includes top-level shakeouts, valuation cuts, shutdowns and anxiety over funding. While it’s fair to say that a company’s overall status shouldn’t worry a common employee, reports around layoffs and downsizing mean everyone’s taking sat up and taken notice now. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=LinkedIn&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">LinkedIn</a> Co-founder <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Allen+Blue&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Allen Blue</a> however feels this is a global phenomenon, and it’s nothing to be worried about. 
 
“Funders should be cautious though. Too much enthusiasm on the part of people who fund companies doesn’t help the ecosystem to grow”, Blue told Business Insider in an exclusive interview.

So even if there is a collapse here, the entire ecosystem won’t go down, unlike it was 10-15 years ago during the first Dotcom burst,” he said. 
 
While there have been reports doubting the future of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=startup+industry&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">startup industry</a>, the first quarter of 2016 has already proven that wrong. In Q12016, Indian <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword> have already raised $1.42 billion by closing a well over 300 deals. This is well above last year’s figure of only 147 deals in the same quarter. 
 “India is currently building the foundation for the next generation of startups. We’re hoping <keyword id="28120" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Linkedin">LinkedIn</keyword> becomes the platform where people who are working together now form their next company. That’s exactly why we built the product”, Blue concludes.

But SoftBank’s Chairman and CEO Masayoshi Son’s next bet may be the ‘startup’ from the country’s richest man. But does Mukesh Ambani really need Softbank’s money?  However, Reliance’s telecom business needs more money to boost its infrastructure. So, with Softbank coming on board, it would be able to deal with a large amount of the current debt without compromising on the investment required to sustain the growth. “The debt in their balance sheet has been created for the purpose of building infrastructure for fibre and telecom towers. They would have the wisdom to deleverage the balance sheet and bring down their debt, capitalize the opportunity,” Deven Choksey, CEO &amp; MD, K.R. Choksey Shares &amp; Securities Private Ltd. told Business Insider. Choksey also believes that it’s a win-win for all – Softbank, Reliance and its shareholders. Softbank, which so far in India has been funding startups and has a stake in almost every other Indian unicorn, could look at Jio as a great investment to further establish a stronghold in India’s internet journey. “Jio is a complete solution provider by integrating various subscriptions – mobile, landline internet and cable TV – under one network. This is going to be the biggest driver of data in the country and they have the reach for that purpose. Certainly, the investment interest of any global banker or investor will be there. These kinds of prepositions aren’t easily available,” said Choksey. Choksey further added that Jio’s last quarter results show that an average user is consuming 11 GB data per month and this will go up after 5G, which makes it an opportune time for an investor to come in.
