3. <strong>Prepare a get-out code should you need one: </strong>Always be prepared for every scenario.<br />
<br />
4. <strong>Remember it is a compromise:</strong> Again, don't bring your ego to the negotiation.<br />

5. <strong>If the other negotiation team start to talk amongst themselves, just keep quiet and listen:</strong> Who knows, you may get information that could actually help you.<br />

Influence is an art, and one that needs to be understood. What works in one situation may not work in another. In other words, the effectiveness of any influence technique can be situational.<br />

We recently interviewed <keyword id="3960873" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="richard-mullender">Richard Mullender</keyword>, a Former Lead Trainer at the National Hostage and Crisis Negotiation Unit, <keyword id="44181" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Scotland">Scotland</keyword> Yard and he told us the secrets of persuasion.<br />

<strong>Manipulation and Persuasion</strong><br />
<br />
People often talk manipulation and persuasion as different terms, what’s the basic difference between them or is there one? When asked, Richard said, “The main difference is intent, if I have a bad intent then its manipulation.” He further stated that we need to understand what we are dealing with, when in a situation; else things might take a wrong turn. Identifying intent is what makes businesses take a leap (for instance-- ‘Your investor/s’)<br />

<strong>Negotiation</strong><br />

Mr Mullender being a part of Scotland Yard went through many negotiations starting from people trying to commit suicides to terrorists asking ransoms. When asked about his most difficult deal, in a retort he said, “The Afghanistan negotiation.”The things he said after that holds huge value for businesses, especially early stage start-ups.<br />

He said, “You’re not just negotiating with this one person, you’re negotiating with the people, the person/group behind him and the person behind you. Even if you come to a point and crack a deal, the authorities might not be satisfied and then again you go ahead and negotiate again. The process goes on until you have that expected hand.”<br />

<strong>The power of Communication</strong><br />
<br />
We all understand the importance of communication but do we effectively use it in situations? How do I negotiate for a raise? What methodology should I use during ‘salary negotiation’? What we could confer from the conversation was just one small thing that we all know and tend to ignore—‘effective listening’. Richard clearly stated that If one is a good listener, he can be paramount at negotiation.<br />

Let them tell you everything, from their secrets to the minor details and then you present your point. Once you get that pressure point/ secret, use it until you get what you want.

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/richard-mullender-1b427910?authType=NAME_SEARCH&amp;authToken=zq5z&amp;locale=en_US&amp;trk=tyah&amp;trkInfo=clickedVertical%3Amynetwork%2CclickedEntityId%3A36490456%2CauthType%3ANAME_SEARCH%2Cidx%3A1-1-1%2CtarId%3A1460981603914%2Ctas%3Arichard%20mullender">LinkedIn</a></span></p><p class="caption">Richard Mullender in his "listening position."</p></div><p></p></div></div>Richard Mullender knows a bit about getting his own way.</p><p>Mullender spent 30 years in the UK police force and then went on to spend five years as a hostage negotiator, working in Afghanistan and the Middle East.</p><p>He has the power of persuasion to talk someone from jumping off a bridge, to preventing an armed kidnapper from killing the person they are holding captive.</p><p>Now he runs his own training company, teaching companies about the power of listening.</p><p>Mullender gave a crash course in "life or death listening" at Ad Week Europe in London on Monday and revealed the four most important words you need to use if you want to negotiate with someone.</p><h2><strong>Those words are: "I feel as if ..."</strong></h2><p>Mullender explained that the best barristers at London's central criminal court, the Old Bailey, weren't the ones that asked endless questions. It was the ones that didn't.</p><p>"Don't change the conversation, it's the dumbest thing you can do. The secret is in the rambling. It's the rambling I'm interested in," Mullender said.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/strelka/25732982372/">Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design/flickr</a></span></p><p class="caption">Get "I feel as with" into your office vocabulary.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Sometimes, in conversation, people ask questions to let the other person "off the hook" and to stop them from rambling. But as soon as people ask questions, they are changing the subject, rather than attempting to interpret how they feel. And it's when people give their opinions that you begin to work them out.</p><p>So rather than asking a direct question like: "Why are you doing that?," instead, when attempting to interpret what someone is saying, you should say: "I feel as if ... "</p><p>Saying something like "I feel as if something I said upset you" or "I get the impression this is the problem" allows you to interpret their true emotion without offending them, Mullender said.</p><p>He added: "It allows you to guess what you think the other person means. If you get it right, they expand on it, if you get it wrong, they correct you and expand on it."</p><h2>The best way to sit in a meeting</h2><p>While Mullender said he doesn't ascribe as much value to body language when it comes to negotiation, he said there is a "listening position" that "automatically makes you listen better."</p><p>When sitting, lean slightly forward, with open space between you and the person you are listening to. You should never sit directly opposite the person, according to Mullender.</p><p>Instead of directly looking at each other eyeball-to-eyeball - which can feel quite intimidating and tense - the people in the meeting should slightly angle their chairs - at a "1.50" angle if you were looking at a clock face -to give people the opportunity to look away if they feel they need to.</p><p>But just as it's important to look away occasionally, Mullender said it's certainly not ideal to do it throughout the entirety of the meeting.
