<ul><li>Food inflation was the major driver of June CPI which hit a three-month high.</li><li>Tomato price inflation was at 64%, onions at 8.1%, and potato at 10.5% on a sequential basis.</li><li>Retail prices of pulses reported double-digit growth for the third consecutive month.</li><li>On a sequential basis, wheat and rice inflation also picked pace in June. </li></ul>India’s <keyword id="513422" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail-inflation" source="Orion">retail inflation</keyword> is at a three-month high in June at 4.8%, but it may not have reached its peak yet. Many climate related factors have been playing havoc with food inflation, and with most of North India under floods and this will only add to the pinch on the pocket, economists have warned. “Nine states had inflation above the average while six had above 5% — UP, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Kerala, Bihar and Haryana. The recent floods and landslides in the North will tend to push up inflation further in these states on the food side — especially vegetables and fruits which can add another 0.2% to headline inflation,” said Madan Sabnavis, chief economist at Bank of Baroda. Food inflation is a heavyweight in consumer price inflation (CPI), and drove it up in June, even as core inflation cooled as compared to the last month. “Food inflation was the major driver for higher headline inflation print; up by 218 basis points month-on-month versus 67 basis points in the last month due to a 12% hike in vegetables prices,” said a report by Phillip Capital. Price shock: Grains join tomatoes Vegetable prices however are on top of everyone’s minds, and it could get worse as prices of tomatoes refuse to inch down. In June, its prices went up by 64%. But other key vegetables like onion were high too at 8.1%, and potato at 10.5% – on a sequential basis. A report by SBI Ecowrap says that the past 10 years data shows that tomato price increase alone did not influence the overall CPI inflation much — except when it is accompanied by substantial increase in price of potato and onion. “We believe if tomato price increase without any substantial change in potato and onion then average inflation in Q2 FY24 will come near 5.8% yoy but if the TOP (tomato, onion, potato) inflation increases, then CPI might come around 6% yoy in Q2 FY24. Accordingly, average CPI for FY24 will vary between 5.2-5.4%,” says SBI Ecowrap. Grains are not too far behind either. Cereal and pulses inflation remained elevated in June at 12.7% y-o-y and 10.5% y-o-y, respectively. Retail prices of pulses, especially that of tur dal, have risen 24% y-o-y in June, reporting double-digit growth for the third consecutive month. Moreover, the<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india/news/india-sows-more-millets-and-less-rice-this-kharif-season/articleshow/101642365.cms"> sowing in rice and pulses is lower this Kharif season</a> due to delayed monsoons, and that doesn’t bode well for their prices which too are seeing upward pressure. “On a sequential basis, wheat and rice inflation also picked pace in June. Looking ahead, the sale of wheat and rice from the government’s buffer stock via Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) auctions could help cool retail prices of rice, wheat and atta. However, with regards to rice prices, deficient monsoons in West Bengal, a key rice-producing state, could impact sowing, putting upward pressure on prices,” said a report by CareEdge. Milk inflation moderated in June to 8.6% as compared to 8.9%. But it continues to remain sticky above 8%, reeling from the impact of a continued demand-supply mismatch and high fodder costs. “Milk prices could remain higher in the coming months, if unabating cereal inflation keeps cattle feed expensive,” CareEdge says. WPI is comforting, say experts RBI insisted in the last two monetary policy committee meeting updates that its decision to hold key interest rates is a pause not a pivot. Most experts had been hoping that it would go for rate cuts in the second half of the year, but the inflation picture is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/finance/news/with-inflation-cooling-rbi-may-slash-interest-rates-by-50-bps-this-financial-year/articleshow/100531780.cms">putting cold water on their hopes</a>. “While food prices will create inflationary pressures in the upcoming months due to uneven distribution of monsoon and lower kharif sowing, RBI stance would not be solely contingent on seasonal food inflation,” said Phillip Capital. Even at 4.8%, inflation is within the tolerance band of RBI, which is 4-6%. “The RBI will keep a keen eye here and it is almost given that nothing will change in the policy next month. More caution will be expressed on the inflation front,” said Sabnavis. CareEdge however says that wholesale price inflation (WPI) has been contracting and that is offering some comfort. India’s WPI has been in a deflationary zone for the second month in a row in May, as prices contracted by 3.48%. “Deflation in WPI will have a lagged impact on CPI inflation going forward. Having said that, RBI would remain cautious and adopt a wait and watch mode. We reaffirm our view that RBI would maintain an extended pause in 2023,” said CareEdge.

According to The Verge, since 2019, Alphabet has been developing robots that can carry out simple tasks like fetching drinks and cleaning surfaces. This Everyday Robots project is still in its infancy -- the robots are slow and hesitant -- but the bots have now been given an upgrade: improved language understanding courtesy of Google's large language model (<keyword id="6356376" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="llm" source="Orion">LLM</keyword>) PaLM. Most robots only respond to short and simple instructions, like "bring me a bottle of water". But LLMs like GPT-3 and Google's MuM can better parse the intent behind more oblique commands. In Google's example, you might tell one of the Everyday Robots prototypes, "I spilled my drink, can you help?" The robot filters this instruction through an internal list of possible actions and interprets it as "fetch me the sponge from the kitchen". Google has dubbed the resulting system PaLM-SayCan, the name capturing how the model combines the language understanding skills of LLMs ("Say") with the "affordance grounding" of its robots. Google said that by integrating PaLM-SayCan into its robots, the bots were able to plan correct responses to 101 user-instructions 84 per cent of the time and successfully execute them 74 per cent of the time. Google's parent Alphabet adds AI language skills to helper robots

New Delhi, Jan 3 () Wheat sowing has risen 9.28 per cent to 312.8 lakh hectare so far in the ongoing rabi (winter) season from the year-ago period, thanks to the good weather.
Sowing of rabi crops begins in October and harvesting kicks off from March.
 As per the agriculture ministry's latest data, wheat sowing in this rabi season has not only exceeded last year's level but also crossed the average normal area of 305.58 lakh hectare.
 Wheat, the main rabi crop, was sown in 286.23 lakh hectare in the same period last season.
 Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Haryana saw higher area of sowing, the data showed.
 Better soil moisture helped farmers sow wheat in more area. The crop prospects are bright, a ministry official said.
 Besides, pulses acreage rose slightly to 146.24 lakh hectare as on today, when compared with 142.22 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
Oilseeds acreage remained almost at last year's level. Oilseed crops like mustard seed and groundnut were sown in 75.72 lakh hectare as against 75.71 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
Coarse cereals area was higher at 49.40 lakh hectare as against 43.82 lakh hectare, while that of rice rose to 16.16 lakh hectare from 13.98 lakh hectare in the said period.
Area under all rabi crops increased to 600.32 lakh hectare so far this rabi season of the 2019-20 crop year (July-June), as against 561.95 lakh hectare in the year-ago period. LUX LUX ANU

Wheat sowing up 9.28 pc on good weather

New Delhi, Jul 8 () Area sown to Kharif crops like rice has shot up 88 per cent to 432.97 lakh hectare so far despite the COVID-19 crisis, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said on Wednesday. Sowing of Kharif (summer) crops begins with the onset of southwest monsoon from June. Rice is the main Kharif crop. "Kharif sowing is underway. This time, 432.97 lakh hectare has been covered, up by 202 lakh hectare when compared with the year-ago period," Tomar said in a media briefing. The sowing acreage has increased by 88 per cent so far and the planting is still continuing, he added. Tomar mentioned that India's agriculture has emerged stronger during the COVID-19 pandemic as the sector functioned smoothly while other sectors remained shut during the lockdown period. The estimated higher crop of 152 million tonne during the 2019 rabi season and increase in coverage under summer crops in the ongoing Kharif season shows the strength of the Indian agriculture sector, he added. Tomar also said three recent ordinances that aim to provide barrier-free trading platforms to farmers and Rs 1 lakh crore agri-infra fund will further strengthen the sector. Efforts are being made to provide Kisan Credit Cards to rest 2.5 crore farmers. Already, 6.35 crore farmers have been covered, he added. According to Agriculture Ministry's latest data, area sown to rice rose to 68.08 lakh hectare till last week, up from 49.23 lakh hectare in the same period during 2019. The area under pulses also increased substantially to 36.82 lakh hectare from 9.46 lakh hectare, while that of coarse cereals to 70.69 lakh hectare from 35.20 lakh hectare in the said period. Similarly, area sown to oilseeds increased to 109.20 lakh hectare till last week from 33.63 lakh hectare in the year-ago period. Among cash crops, the area under cotton increased significantly to 91.67 lakh hectare from 45.85 lakh hectare, while that of sugarcane area rose marginally to 50.62 lakh hectare from 49.86 lakh hectare in the said period. However, area coverage under jute and Mesta remained lower at 5.89 lakh hectare till last week as against 6.80 lakh hectare in the year-ago, the data showed. Kharif sowing up 88% so far despite COVID-19 crisis: Tomar

New Delhi, Dec 6 () Wheat sowing has picked up in the ongoing rabi season as the crop was planted in 4.28 per cent more area at 202.54 lakh hectare (ha) compared to the year-ago period, said a latest data released by the Agriculture Ministry on Friday.
Wheat is the main rabi crop, the sowing of which begins from October and harvesting from April onwards. Wheat was sown in 194.21 lakh hectare a year ago.
As per the ministry's latest data, wheat was sown in 8.34 lakh hectare more area so far in the ongoing rabi (winter) season of the 2019-20 crop year (July-June).
Higher coverage was reported from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh.
Similarly, rice was sown in more area at 10.17 lakh hectare so far this season compared to 8.42 lakh hectare in the year-ago period, while coarse cereals was planted in 35.56 lakh hectare as against 32.75 lakh hectare.
However, area sown to pulses remained slightly lagging at 105.16 lakh hectare so far this rabi season as against 111.90 lakh hectare in the same season last year, the data showed.
Even area sown to oilseeds remained flat at 65.05 lakh hectare as against 66.10 lakh hectare.
Total area sown to all rabi crops remained higher at 418.47 lakh hectare so far this rabi season as against 413.36 lakh hectare in the year-ago period, the data showed. LUX BAL

Wheat sowing up 4.28% at 202.54 lakh ha so far

New Delhi, Dec 20 () Area sown to wheat, the main rabi crop, touched 278 lakh hectare (ha) so far in this season, about 90 per cent of the normal sowing area under this crop, according to agriculture ministry data released on Friday.
 The area sown to wheat crop is higher than 250 lakh hectare covered in the year-ago period.
 Currently, farmers are planting rabi crops, sowing of which normally begins from October and harvesting from April onwards.
 According to the ministry's data, more area coverage under wheat crop has been reported from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat.
 The current low temperature in the growing regions is expected to boost the prospects of wheat crop, said the ministry official.
 Besides wheat, rice has also been covered in more area at 12.35 lakh hectare so far in the ongoing rabi season of the 2019-20 crop year (July-June) from 10.11 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
 Sowing of pulses remained flat at 131.46 lakh hectare so far as against 131.38 lakh hectare a year ago.
 Coverage of coarse cereals has been slightly higher at 43.70 lakh hectare as against 40.10 lakh hectare, while that of area under oilseeds remained lower at 71.79 lakh hectare as against 73.08 lakh hectare in the said period.
 Total area sown to all rabi crops reached 537.21 lakh hectare so far in this rabi season, higher than 504.69 lakh hectare a year ago, the data showed.
 It may be noted that rabi crops have been sown in more than 90 per cent of its normal sowing area of 634 lakh hectare. LUX HRS

Still, despite these headwinds, both Capital Economics and Credit Suisse think 2017 will still be another solid year for the Vietnamese economy. The first expects growth of 7% in 2017 while the latter sees growth of 6.2%.
