It is late aftenoon and still no customer has turned up at her door in Kamathipura, infamous as the flesh trade district of Mumbai. This is the eighth day that sex worker Soni, 49, has not got a single "kastamber" (customer), as she pronounces it. Dressed in a velvet maxi, she peeps out every now and then from behind the curtain of her room door on the road outside lying empty, in view of the lockdown imposed to contain the spread of the deadly coronavirus. The situation has brought despair not just for her but for thousands of other sex workers who have been involved in prostitution in Kamathipura since several decades. Soni, who hails from Nepal, has been a sex worker in the '10th gully' of Kamathipura since the last 25 years. "Poora jindagi idhar nikala, itna bam fata, attack hua, kitna bimari aya, lekin aisa halat kabhi nahi tha" (spent the whole life in this work. The city witnessed bomb blasts, attacks, many diseases, but this kind of situation never occurred in the past," she told PTI in 'Mumbai style' Hindi. She has not earned a single rupee since last Sunday and does not see any chance of the situation improving in the next few days. "If this continues, what will I eat, how will I pay rent to room owner are the questions before me," she said. Besides Soni, there are three more women in the room who say that on normal days, they earn Rs 2,000 to 3,000. Asked how they are managing their food, Soni said, "I have brought some groceries, but they will last only two-three days. I will now have to spend cautiously from my savings." Kamathipura was once known as the largest brothels in the country. Women of various age groups are involved in flesh trade here. Many are trafficked and brought here from West Bengal, Nepal and Bangladesh. Due to the current lockdown, the prostitution business here is in a slump. On a normal day, the area is bustling with activity, with customers from the city and suburbs arriving here. But, nowadays the narrow lanes of Kamathipura, the old dilapidated buildings in the area wear a deserted look. While walking through its bylanes, the song "Aaja teri yaad aayi" (come, I'm remembering you), a hit number from 1970 film 'Charas', blaring on a radio summed up the situation prevailing in the area. With no work now, some of the prostitutes are seen sitting in groups, plucking each other's grey hair or playing cards to spend their time. Another sex worker Jaya, who is in her 30s, is worried about how to earn money to sustain her livelihood in these unprecedented times. She hails from West Bangal and was forced into prostitution by a trafficker. "I don't have any work since a week now and I also don't have enough money with me," says Jaya, while keeping an eye on her gas burner as the pressure cooker whistled, filling the place with the smell of dal and rice being boiled in it. She has a six-year-old son whom she has kept with a family known to her in Pune so he can go to school and study. "Every month, I have to send at least Rs 1,500 for my child, but if I don't earn, how can I send the money for him? I have lot of tension," she said. Another sex worker Kiran said, "Why dont you people tell Modi (Prime Minister) to send us money as we also have aged parents and children to look after." "Why doesnt he give us a package as we are also human beings...take my word, if this situation continues, offences like theft, loot and assault will increase," she said, while narrating an incident of the previous day wherein a man was attacked with knife in the area. A similar situation prevails at the Mumbai Sangeet Kala Mandal, located near Kennedy Bridge at Grant Road, where prostitutes perform 'mujra' (sensuous dance) to solicit rich customers. Sex workers in Mumbai struggle to survive amid Coronavirus lock down

This is the second in a series of articles analysing the impact of 5G mobile technology on people's everyday lives. In Hangzhou, capital of eastern China's Zhejiang province and one of the country's major technology hubs, evidence of the city's smart infrastructure can be gleaned from how its public services function. Police officers are notified of major car accidents soon after they happen, traffic lights automatically adjust to changes in the volume of vehicles on the road, and in emergencies, fire trucks and ambulances are not stopped by a single red light until they arrive at the scene. Those advances are enabled by Hangzhou's City Brain project, a cloud computing and artificial intelligence-driven urban traffic-management system. It covers a total area of 420 square kilometres, which is about the size of seven Manhattans - referring to the most densely populated of the five boroughs of New York City. When 5G mobile services start to roll out worldwide from next year, smart cities such as Hangzhou are expected to get smarter as the next-generation wireless technology helps industries realise the full potential of the internet of things (IoT). "From 2G to 3G to 4G, all of them serve people," said Cui Kai, a Beijing-based IoT analyst with technology research firm IDC. "But 5G, from the beginning of its infrastructure design, has the internet of things in mind." IoT envisions a self-configuring, adaptive and complex network that interconnects physical objects, each containing embedded technology to communicate, gather data and interact with mobile applications or other networks. The stakes are high for industries around the world, as global spending on IoT is forecast to exceed US$1 trillion in 2022, up from an estimated US$745 billion this year, according to IDC. It said adoption of IoT was happening across industries, in governments and in consumers' daily lives. Data generated by connected devices is now helping companies run more efficiently and gain insight into business processes, while consumers' access to data is changing how they are informed about the status of households, vehicles and family members, as well as their own health and fitness. "The next chapter of IoT is just beginning, as we see a shift from digitally enabling the physical to automating and augmenting the human experience with a connected world," said Carrie MacGillivray, vice-president for IoT and mobility at IDC, in a recent report. That shift is likely to become apparent as 5G networks are rolled out around the world. With peak data rates up to 20 times faster than 4G, 5G will serve as "the connective tissue" for IoT, autonomous cars, smart cities and new mobile applications - providing the backbone for the industrial internet, according to a Deloitte report. On the consumer side, 5G smartphone users will be able to send high-resolution 4K video within a few seconds, and both video games and apps based on augmented and virtual reality technologies will be seamless. The 5G networks will also be able to support the growing number of connected devices globally, from fitness-tracking watches to internet-linked televisions and smart speakers at home. The International Telecommunications Union, the United Nations agency overseeing development of the "IMT 2020" global standard for 5G, said the new wireless technology would support 1 million connected devices per square kilometre; 1 millisecond latency (representing the nearly instant time a packet of data takes to get from one point to another); greater efficiency in terms of power and use of radio spectrum; and a peak data download rate of up to 20 gigabits per second. <a href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/big-tech/article/3006582/power-change-world-heres-why-us-and-china-are-fighting-over-our-5g">With the power to change the world, here's why the US and China are fighting over our 5G future</a> The agency works in tandem with the 3rd Generation Partnership Project, an international collaboration of seven telecoms standard development organisations, which has approved the much-anticipated global technology specifications for 5G. That has kicked off work on initial deployments this year by some of the world's largest telecoms network operators. At the crux of many IoT applications is latency. For a YouTube viewer, it means the delay between clicking the play button and the moment when the video starts streaming. 5G networks will provide better latency than the average 50 milliseconds on 4G networks, enabling IoT applications that require near instantaneous data transmission such as remote surgery. <img src="https://cdn.i-scmp.com/sites/default/files/d8/images/methode/2019/05/02/038d25bc-668c-11e9-a2c3-042d2f2c8874_972x_233248.jpg" class="" /> In March, China conducted its first remote surgery using robots with the support of a 5G network deployed by telecoms operator China Mobile and supplied by Huawei Technologies, according to state media. During the three-hour procedure, a surgeon implanted a neurostimulator device into the brain of a Parkinson's disease patient in Beijing with the aid of robotic arms, which were remotely controlled about 3,000km away. Remote surgeries are widely expected to enable more doctors to help their colleagues at smaller institutions or in disaster areas. Low latency is also key to the smooth operation of autonomous vehicles. Sensors in a self-driving car gather information - from road conditions and nearby obstacles to traffic accidents along the way - and send the data to the car's on-board computer or to a cloud computing platform to make instant decisions. <img src="https://cdn.i-scmp.com/sites/default/files/d8/images/methode/2019/05/02/0358ed24-668c-11e9-a2c3-042d2f2c8874_972x_233248.jpg" class="" /> Seamless machine-to-machine communication would also be an important asset in military operations. A group of soldiers, for example, can wear smart wristwatches to know each other's location and vital signs as they operate in a tropical forest, for example, where satellite communications do not work. The initiative aims to slash 70 per cent of labour costs in one of the world's busiest container terminals. "In the future, manufacturing plants and retailers can achieve efficiency with improved workflows because every data point will be gathered, processed and analysed in real time," said Chow. For consumers, 5G is expected to broaden the use of smart home devices like voice-activated speakers and other advanced internet-linked appliances. The <keyword id="35145" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-market">global market</keyword> for smart electric household appliances, for example, is projected to reach 1.5 billion units by 2020 when commercial 5G networks are online, according to data from analytics firm Dun &amp; Bradstreet. "Previously, you needed to think about how much data you could send between devices and the cloud," said Werner Vogels, chief technology officer at Amazon, in an interview last month. "With 5G, companies will no longer be constrained. Every device, even your clock on the wall, could become internet connected." In China, which has the world's biggest internet population and largest smartphone market, the benefits of IoT adoption are expected to become widespread as 5G data consumption is encouraged by the government and telecoms operators, according to PwC's Chow. That would help take Hangzhou's City Brain, a project backed by e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding, to the next level. Alibaba is the parent company of the South China Morning Post. With 5G networks, Hangzhou's City Brain will be able to process greater amounts of data gathered from a range of IoT units, including lamp posts, manhole covers and electricity meters. The advanced mobile infrastructure would enable sensors to be deployed in underground pipes to find water leakage. "Every asset can be connected through the internet," said IDC's Cui. The combination of 5G and IoT resources could turn a smart electricity meter into a real-time surveillance tool to tell whether someone is at home or not. "You can imagine after 5G is rolled out, China would like to make the whole country a smart country," said PwC's Chow. Xiaomi has been popular in India for churning out value for money devices. And so, the Mi <keyword id="1606234" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Air-Purifier">air purifier</keyword> 2 is competitively priced at Rs. 9999 while at present Air Purifiers in India will cost anything between Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 80,000. In Barra’s words the new Mi Air Purifier 2 is “designed to disrupt the market”.

 The Mi Air Purifier 2 connects to smartphones and allows remote access to the device through an app and enables users to check the air quality of a room in real-time. It has a 360° cylindrical filter with triple layer design that filters out dust, plant pollen, pet fur and bad odour. Xiaomi says the Mi Air Purifier 2 takes just 10 minutes to circulate purified air in a 21m2 room and the motor only consumes about 4.8W. It has a noise level as low as 30dB in Night mode, it also has a Turbo mode and an Auto mode which automatically adjusts the motor according to the room’s air. The Mi Home app also monitors the filter’s lifespan and sends a reminder when it needs to be replaced and the filter can be bought from company’s website for Rs. 2499. The filter roughly lasts about six months. The Mi Air Purifier 2 works with non-Xiaomi <keyword id="6355645" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="android">Android</keyword> phones and iPhone as well.

Considering home appliances in India are mainly bought and sold in physical retail outlets, <keyword id="2210169" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xiaomi-India">Xiaomi India</keyword> head, Manu Kumar Jain says that there is no certainty as yet on offline Xiaomi retail stores in India but he also added that India will see more products from the company’s “smart home” category in future. Xiaomi has a broader range of products in its home market China which includes Mi TV, water purifiers, air purifiers, rice cooker etc.

And ‘Air Quality’ is a conversation that must be had. According to a report released by World Health organisation earlier this year, half of the world’s 20 most polluted cities are in India.  When I visited the <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword> store in China, I was at once incredibly impressed and instantly reminded of the <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> store - and that particular comparison with Apple has been something that Xiaomi has aspired for. The Xiaomi phones have been extremely popular in India not only for their resemblance with the iPhones but for their affordability, specs and design but mainly affordability. The company's mantra has been to provide technology at an affordable price. While the <keyword id="4512284" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="mi-stores">Mi Stores</keyword> in China looked a lot like Apple stores but it was a buzzing ‘Apple store’ filled with buyers, window shoppers, on lookers. The chic interior of the store resonated with the sleek and stylish Mi products and the crowd in the store would certainly be something that Apple could aspire to have in their stores. In China the Mi Homes have a variety of products from Laptops to <keyword id="1606234" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Air-Purifier">Air Purifier</keyword> to Rice Cookers to even Scooters. 
 Xiaomi is finally going to unveil its first Mi store in <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword> in India after selling its products online ever since it entered India in 2014. Opening of a Mi Store in India was waiting to happen, in this short span of a time Xiaomi has managed to become a household name. In a recent note, Singapore-based agency <keyword id="216011" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Canalys">Canalys</keyword> placed Xiaomi on the number two position with 14% market share in Indian smartphone second only to Korean giant <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>, which had 22% market share. Xiaomi has a huge hold on the young, online savvy consumers which is why Canalys also said that Xiaomi’s success in India is underscored by its online go-to-market strategy. While Xiaomi is going to open its first ever store in India but it’s certain that Xiaomi will continue to have a strong online presence as has been the case in other markets like China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan where Xiaomi has already opened its stores. 
 India will be the fifth market for Xiaomi to open a <keyword id="3672314" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="mi-home">Mi Home</keyword> in but it will be interesting to see what the company chooses to bring from the host of products available in its other markets. The company has already launched products like Air Purifier 2, power bank, Mi band in India other than its smartphones. 
 
So while we wait and see what makes it to the Mi Home in India, here are the products I checked out at the Mi Home in China.

Chauhan told BI she prefers to pit cherries with a metal straw.It's the perfect size and strong enough to push out the pit without destroying the fruit.<h2>No avocado slicer is necessary if you have a reliable knife</h2>You won't find an avocado slicer in Chauhan's kitchen.For her, a sharp paring knife is much more effective. And it can do many kitchen tasks beyond just slicing an avocado.Still, she said, it's worth using an avocado slicer if it helps you feel more confident cutting the fruit. After all, avocado-cutting-related injuries are so common the term <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/avocado-injuries-sent-8900-americans-to-the-er-last-year-2019-8">"avocado hand"</a> exists.<h2>You don't need a rice cooker to make great rice</h2><div type="image" title="A rice cooker on a purple checkered background" height="1500" width="2000" msid="107559574" hostid="261"></div>Chauhan doesn't have a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cool-things-you-can-make-in-a-rice-cooker-2019-3">rice cooker</a> in her kitchen, even though her mom used one growing up (and still uses one now). Instead, she just uses a pot."I cook my rice like I cook my pasta. I soak it, I boil it in a lot of water, then I drain the water," she said.This way, she said, she's draining off a lot of the starch, making this "almost a healthier way to eat rice."<h2>You won't find a fancy nugget ice maker in her kitchen</h2><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/opal-nugget-ice-maker-indiegogo-hands-on-2018-8">Countertop nugget ice makers</a> have been trending for a while now, but Chauhan would rather skip this device and enjoy having extra counterspace."I don't need an ice maker," she told BI. "That's what your freezer is for."<h2>Chauhan skips the cheapest spices on the shelf</h2>If she's not making spices from scratch, she looks to Indian spices because they have a high potency.She also recommends that home cooks look for higher-quality spices to give their dishes more robust flavors."The cheaper the ingredient, the lesser the potency of the flavors is going to be," Chauhan said.But you don't have to buy the most expensive item on the shelf. Instead, she recommends looking for options in the middle.<h2>She also skips truffle oil and creamy dressings</h2>Chauhan <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/judges-share-ingredients-they-want-people-to-stop-using-on-cooking-shows">avoids truffle oil</a>, a polarizing artificially flavored ingredient. She said she'll generally try to avoid artificially flavored or highly processed ingredients, from cheese in a can to store-bought salad dressings."I don't like to keep creamy dressings because I know that chemicals have been used to emulsify it," Chauhan told BI.Plus, she said, anybody can make a dressing in two minutes.To <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chefs-favorite-homemade-salad-dressings-2019-6">make an easy creamy dressing</a>, she puts high-quality olive or avocado oil in a blender, then adds salt, pepper, and her spices of choice. She blends starting at a low speed, then slowly increases the speed while adding vinegar until the dressing reaches a creamy consistency.<h2>On the other hand, a stand mixer is a must-have in this chef's kitchen</h2><div type="image" title="A standing mixer on a purple checkered background" height="1500" width="2000" msid="107559577" hostid="261"></div>One of Chauhan's most-used kitchen gadgets is her stand mixer.She uses it to knead dough for the fresh rotis and flatbreads she makes every day. That way, she can cook from scratch while still multitasking to get meals on the table for her family."While the stand mixer is doing the work, I am making the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-happens-if-you-eat-vegetables-every-day-for-a-month-photos">vegetables that go along with my dish</a>," she added.<h2>This former pastry chef appreciates an apple corer</h2>Chauhan swears by using a paring knife for many kitchen tasks, but when prepping apples, she reverts to her pastry-chef shortcut of using an apple corer."I started off as a pastry student, so if I'm making some pies and stuff, I would definitely use an apple corer," she said.<h2>Don't skip out on a salad spinner, either</h2>In addition to making her own dressings, Chauhan upgrades her salads by using a salad spinner to dry her greens."When you wash your greens, you do not want that water to linger," she added. "You want that water to be completely spun out so that the vinegarette or the dressing really coats each and every leaf."<h2>Chauhan has recently become an air-fryer fan</h2>The chef recently added an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/making-cookies-different-methods-oven-air-fryer-microwave-best-one">air fryer</a> to her kitchen, and she's already enjoying it."It's actually very convenient," she told BI. "Instead of putting on the oven and preheating and stuff, you just put things in the air fryer. It's working very well for me."<h2>A pressure cooker is a staple for Indian cooking</h2>She owns an Instant Pot, and uses it to cook all her lentils."I grew up in India, so each and every recipe starts off with a pressure cooker and ends with a pressure cooker," she told BI.<h2>Above all, she said, the best tool in any kitchen is a basic spoon</h2>According to Chauhan, a spoon is one of the most useful tools in a kitchen that could replace several unitaskers."The best way to peel ginger is with a spoon," she said. "You can also smash garlic with it. That's your <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/kitchen/cheap-useful-kitchen-tools">secret weapon in the kitchen</a>. Don't overlook it."

New Delhi, Dec 6 () Kitchen appliances maker TTK Prestige on Friday said it aims to double its turnover by 2024-25, according to a top company official.
 The firm, whose growth rate has come down to single digit, is aiming to get back to its double-digit growth journey again across the segments, such as pressure cooker, cookware, gas stoves, rice cookers and induction cooktops.
 Besides, TTK Prestige has plans to expand its distribution network further and expects higher sales from fast-growing online channels.
 "We are expecting to double our turnover by FY 2024-25," TTK Group Chairman T T Jagannathan told .
 He further added, "This fiscal, we are expecting (a turnover of) Rs 2,100-Rs 2,200 crore."
 On the growth rate, Jagannathan said growth of TTK Prestige has come down but the company is still growing. "Last year, we had a double-digit growth."
 TTK Prestige on Friday also unveiled plans for 2020 aimed at increasing market share across geographies and getting back to double-digit growth in mature categories such as pressure cookers.
 "We are committed to growing our presence and aim to be the number one for consumers in India. As market leaders in the pressure cooker category, we endeavour to increase our share in the kitchen appliance space also," Jagannathan said.
 He also said that online sales currently contribute about 10 per cent of its total sales, and higher contribution is expected from this channel in the coming year.
 However, he also said, "This channel is evolving but the freight is expensive compared to the value of our products."
 In August 2017, the company had acquired the UK-based Horwood Homewares and had introduced Judge Brand in the Indian market. KRH HRS

 <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword> official stores are yet to come to India but during my recent trip to <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> I checked out what a Mi store actually looks like and I can safely say that the Mi stores in China can give <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> stores across the world a run for their money. The Chinese smartphone maker stocks a lot more than the usual phones and laptops, in a Mi store, the product ranges from their hot selling phones to Drones to even a Rice Cooker.

I checked out some of the Mi stores in China and I can easily say that if you like all things tech, you will feel like a kid in a candy store.
