<p>The analysis, which can be <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/dc-sports-bog/wp/2014/11/19/chris-cooley-rgiii-was-so-bad-i-cant-assess-the-rest-of-the-redskins-offense/">seen in detail on the Washington Post</a>, concludes that RG3 failed at almost all of the basics of being an NFL quarterback including missing basic reads, not seeing wide open receivers, misreading the defenses, and failing to run the team's offense.</p>
<p>It got so bad that Cooley says the coaching staff eventually had to switch to what Cooley called a "Day-One offense," the absolute basics.</p>
<p>It is an absolutely scathing analysis backed up with plenty of details from the game that leaves you shaking your head at the realization of just how bad it has gotten for a quarterback that once seemed destined for greatness and who now has been benched.</p>
<p>But after all that, Griffin III may actually have a bigger problem, one that could be an underlying cause of the other issues and one that he and the coaches may never be able to fix.</p>
<p>Robert Griffin III has the yips.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>"He's short-arming the ball," Cooley said. "He has bad technique, he's not setting his feet right….He has the yips. He does have the yips, where the ball's just not coming out of your hand right, so now you've aborted all technique, because you don't have a feel for the ball coming out of your hand, and you're getting this shot-put throw action. You're aiming. He has the yips. He does. He just does."</strong></p>
<p>The yips are something most closely associated with golfers putting and occasionally with baseball players throwing, where the athlete is suddenly unable to do a basic skill they have done thousands or even millions of times before.</p>
<p>The most famous case came in during the 2000 MLB playoffs when the St. Louis Cardinals' young, star pitcher Rick Ankiel suddenly lost the ability to aim his pitches.  Ankiel never recovered and eventually reinvented himself as an outfielder.</p>
<p>If RG3 does have the yips, not only does it affect the throws he makes, but it probably also affects his confidence which could explain why he is not making the throws called for in the game plan and why he is not throwing to wide open receivers.</p>
<p>An athlete with the yips can become consumed with the fear of failure and may avoid those situations at all cost.</p>
<p>Unfortunately for Griffin III, there probably won't be a chance for him to switch positions which means if he can't fix the yips, it could end his career.</p>

"So I was pretty surprised, having Russ as our starting quarterback the whole year, then the last two games there being a switch."</p><h2>Payton's relationship with Wilson</h2><p>Former <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/robert-griffin-iii-back-2018-8">NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III</a> seemed somewhat unsurprised by Payton's moves, and rumored plans. <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/RGIII/status/1740077799908712492">He noted on X</a>, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, that "Wilson's biggest opposition this year was Sean Payton" and expounded upon that thought on his podcast.</p><p>"For Sean Payton to do everything that he's done to Russell Wilson when he came in the door, he was trying to make it seem like he was not the problem," Griffin <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/RGIII/status/1740167850726465863">said on the "RG3 and the Ones" podcast</a>. He said Thursday morning that Payton "disliked Russell Wilson on a level I've never seen before."</p><p>"Whether you like Russell Wilson or not, Russell Wilson's a pro," Carton said. "Russell Wilson's an accomplished veteran in this league and has never done anybody wrong that we're aware of publicly. For Sean Payton to humiliate him in this manner is wrong."</p><p>A representative from the franchise responded to Business Insider's request for comment by referencing Payton's press conference from Wednesday. The head coach confirmed that the quarterback change was his decision and was motivated by the team's offensive struggles.</p><p>"I understand all the speculation and everything that surrounds a move like that," Payton told reporters. But if the Broncos part ways with Wilson during the offseason, they'll avoid paying him another $37 million he'd be due for the following year.</p><p>The only way that $37 million would otherwise become guaranteed is if Wilson were to sustain an injury in the course of play. And Bleacher Report reported that the Broncos allegedly pressured Wilson into waiving the injury clause, but that Wilson refused.</p><p>While he says he understands "the economics" associated with benching Wilson, Payton insists that the decision was not financially motivated. If it were, as he questioned hypothetically during Wednesday's press conference, "then why not last week or two weeks ago or three weeks ago or four weeks ago?"</p><p>"Sure, in our game today there are economics and all those other things," Payton said. "But the No. 1 push behind this — and it's a decision I'm making — is to get a spark offensively."</p>
