<ul><li><keyword id="12006311" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="revos-plans" source="Orion">Revos plans</keyword> to set up a million <keyword id="6116214" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ev-chargers" source="Orion">EV chargers</keyword> across 500 cities over the next three years.</li><li>Union Square Ventures and Bengaluru-based Prime Venture Partners participated in its Series A round.</li><li>It has deployed over 10,000 devices in 30 OEMs across India, China, Vietnam, Nepal and Egypt. <br /></li></ul>Bengaluru-based startup <keyword id="12003975" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="revos" source="Orion">Revos</keyword> on Thursday, September 2, announced that it has raised $4 million to build a million electric vehicles (EV) chargers across 500 cities over the next three years. The company will tap into expansion opportunities in both India and other emerging markets.<br /><br />Launched only two years ago in 2019, Revos has set up over 10,000 devices — especially electric two-wheeler and three-wheeler chargers — in 30 original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) across India, China, Vietnam, Nepal and Egypt. <br /><br />The company will use this capital to deploy these EV charging infrastructure across the country and also strengthen its technology team with more hires. <br /><br />Revos’ Series A funding round witnessed participation from US-based Union Square Ventures (USV) and Bengaluru-based Prime Venture Partners (PVP). This is Union Square Ventures’ first investment in India and Prime Venture Partners’ first investment in the EV space. <br /><br />“The move to EVs is essential and inevitable. India runs on two/three wheelers. Making recharging available “anytime, anywhere” was pivotal to the penetration of mobiles in India. We believe Revos is well positioned to trigger a similar inflexion in the EV market,” said Sanjay Swamy, managing partner of Prime Venture Partners.<br /><br />Revos was founded in 2017 by Jyotiranjan Harichandan and Mohit Yadav. “Revos is not only creating the largest charging infrastructure to support EVs but also building a world class OS [operating software] to make EVs smart, safe, connected and ready for the future,” Harichandan said in a press note. <br /><br />The company’s name stands for Revolutionary EV Operating Stack (REVOS). It is an artificial intelligence (AI)-integrated platform that allows EVs to communicate with each other.<br /><br />It enables EVs to have connected features like on-bike navigation, diagnostics, smart alerts and anti-theft lock. The company relates itself to ‘Android for EVs’ and allows EV manufacturers to build smart mobility features on top of the software developed by Revos. <br /><br />Revos is also piloting a peer-to-peer (P2P) charging infrastructure named Bolt that will be compatible with any portable EV charger that comes with each respective vehicle. The charger will work with existing AC power supply at home and establishments. <br /><br />"This fundraiser is a very important step in our journey. This Bengaluru startup is looking to set up 1 million EV chargers in next three years, raises $4 million

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Revo Foods is <a target="_blank" href="https://revo-foods_1.prowly.com/263265-3d-printed-vegan-salmon-filet-expands-its-reach-across-europe">the first company to sell 3D-printed vegan salmon fillets,</a> now available in Europe.</li><li>Some $400 million has poured into startups making seafood from plants and fish cells.</li><li>Entrepreneurs said alternative seafood could reduce overfishing and microplastic pollution. </li></ul><p>The market for 3D-printed products includes homes, furniture, and footwear. Now we can add salmon to the list, at least in Europe.</p><p>The foodtech startup Revo Foods in September <a target="_blank" href="https://revo-foods_1.prowly.com/263265-3d-printed-vegan-salmon-filet-expands-its-reach-across-europe"><u>became the first company to sell 3D-printed vegan salmon filets</u></a> in select grocery stores in Vienna, Austria, and opened an online shop that ships the product to most European countries this month.</p><p>"It flakes very nicely into layers just like salmon," Robin Simsa, the CEO of Revo Foods, told Insider. "It also has a similar taste, but like any meat alternative, it's not 100% the same."</p><p>This marks a milestone for the nascent alternative-seafood industry, which is testing an array of ingredients and technologies to make products that don't harm ocean ecosystems. Some startups are developing plant-based options, while others are growing fish cells in a lab. For its part, Revo Foods' 3D printer layers "mycoprotein" made from mushroom roots with plant-based fats to mimic the texture of real salmon.</p><p>Investors have poured <a target="_blank" href="https://www.fishfarmingexpert.com/alternative-seafood/alternative-seafood-pioneers-have-raised-178m-this-year/1146830"><u>upward of $400 million</u></a> into the alternative-seafood startups in recent years — including $7 million in Revo Foods. But no company is making massive amounts of it yet. And the biggest question remains largely untested: Will people buy it?</p><p>Over the past several weeks, Simsa said Revo Foods' vegan salmon has sold out within hours of hitting store shelves. But many of the comments <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3DsDPa5HRs"><u>below a YouTube promotional video</u></a> were critical of the premium price and the idea of printing food.</p><p>Revo Foods sells 130 grams, or about 4 ½ ounces, of its vegan salmon for 7 euros, or about $7.</p><p>"Why would I eat fake salmon that's more expensive than real salmon?" one commenter asked. Another said they'd rather be in a nuclear apocalypse than eat the vegan filets. The reactions <a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CxK28btt7vv/"><u>were more positive</u></a> on Instagram, however.</p><p>Simsa said the price will drop as Revo Foods automates more steps in the process outside of 3D printing and produces larger volumes. He acknowledged that people are skeptical of the technology but said it isn't unlike other industrial machinery that already makes chocolate and snacks. Barilla is already selling 3D-printed pasta.</p><p>There's also the sustainability angle.</p><p>Salmon<strong> </strong>is considered one of the healthiest things to eat and fish in general have <a target="_blank" href="https://ourworldindata.org/food-choice-vs-eating-local"><u>a much lower carbon footprint than beef</u></a>, a well-known contributor to the climate crisis because of methane emissions from cattle and the vast amount of land required to raise them.</p><p>Still, around one-third of global fish stocks are overexploited, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.fao.org/3/cc0461en/online/sofia/2022/status-of-fishery-resources.html"><u>according to the United Nations</u></a>. And fishing nets are a major source of ocean microplastics, which scientists say <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microplastics-discovered-in-human-blood-for-the-first-time-2022-3"><u>are increasingly being found in humans</u></a>.</p><p>"Ultimately, people want to be excited about a product. We have to capture their imaginations," Christopher Bryson, the CEO of New School Foods, told Insider. His startup is developing its own plant-based whole salmon filet using a novel freezing technology and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20230202005290/en/New-School-Foods-Unveils-Scalable-Muscle-Fiber-and-Scaffolding-Technology-for-Whole-cut-Meat-Alternatives"><u>has raised $12 million</u></a>.</p><p>"If people made decisions based on health and the planet, we'd all already only be eating tofu," Bryson said.</p>

Even if a buyer is found, some of these jobs could be at risk.</strong></li></ul><p><br />LONDON - Beleaguered UK department store House of Fraser on Friday called in administrators after failing in its attempts to negotiate a rescue package or sale of the business.</p><p>House of Fraser said in a statement on Friday that talks with investors and creditors had "not concluded in a solvent solution."</p><p>EY, one of the "Big Four" accountants, have been appointed as administrators. House of Fraser, which employs 17,500 people across nationwide, will continue to trade while EY tries to find a buyer for part or all of the business.</p><p>Companies fall into administration in the UK when they become insolvent, with debts larger its assets. Administrators are appointed to take control of the business and act in the best interest of creditors, realizing value by selling the business part or whole. <a href="https://news.sky.com/story/house-of-fraser-calls-in-administrators-11468168">Sky News reports that Sports Direct billionaire Mike Ashley is an early front-runner to buy the business.</a></p><p>House of Fraser said in its statement: "Significant progress has been made towards completing a sale of the Group's business and assets. The proposed administrators are expected to continue to progress those discussions with a view to concluding a transaction shortly after their appointment."</p><p>If a buyer cannot be found, EY will likely shutter the company and liquidate its assets. It's a very shabby way to treat people and bad news for the wider economy."</p><p>House of Fraser, which was founded in 1849 in Glasgow, has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/house-of-fraser-future-crisis-cash-crunch-2018-3">been at risk of toppling for several months.</a> The department store's Chinese owners tried to seal a rescue deal earlier this month that collapsed, leaving House of Fraser in a precarious position. The company also faced an extended battle with landlords to try and reduce its rents and buy more time.</p><p>House of Fraser was acquired by Chinese group Sanpower for £450 million in 2014, but the chain has struggled since then. House of Fraser lost £9 million last year and sales over the crucial Christmas period fell by 2.9%. The company has a £400 million debt pile.</p><p>Mark Williams, the president of retail property organisation Revo, said in a statement earlier this week: "House of Fraser is a business that has been under-invested in for many years and that's the ultimate reason for its failure."</p><p>The collapse of House of Fraser follows the demise of fellow department store BHS in 2016. The UK is facing an extended slump in retail sales this year and department stores have been particularly badly hit. Debenhams, another UK department store, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/business/2018/apr/19/debenhams-profits-slump-52-beast-from-the-east-sales">announced an 85% collapse in profits in April.</a></p><p>Frank Slevin, chairman of House of Fraser, said in a statement: "This has been an extraordinarily challenging six months in which the business has delivered so many critical elements of the turnaround plan. This is able to be adjusted via two arrow buttons. There's also an on-board on/off button. </p><h2>Set-up process</h2><p><div type="image" title="Electra Townie Go! 7D Electric Bike back" height="900" width="1200" msid="76081010" hostid="261"></div></p><p>I've had some terrible experiences trying to put bikes together on my own in the past. Fortunately, if you buy the <a href="https://www.avantlink.com/click.php?tt=cl&amp;mi=10248&amp;pw=184534&amp;ctc=&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rei.com%2Fproduct%2F170336%2Felectra-townie-go-7d-electric-bike7d-electric-bike" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Electra Townie Go! 7D</a> from REI, the brand takes care of assembly for you. I don't live near an REI, so Electra sent the bike to a local shop for assembly which was much appreciated. </p><p>I've had REI assemble bikes for me in the past and can speak to their quality service. The store rep made sure the seat was the right height for my body and explained how to use the bike's main features. Plus, within 20 hours of use or six months, REI allows you to bring the bike in for a free tune-up.</p><h2>What makes this electric bike stand out</h2><p>One of the most important considerations when shopping for an electric bike is the range of its battery. Electra states that the <a href="https://www.avantlink.com/click.php?tt=cl&amp;mi=10248&amp;pw=184534&amp;ctc=&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rei.com%2Fproduct%2F170336%2Felectra-townie-go-7d-electric-bike7d-electric-bike" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">7D</a> has a range of 20 to 50 miles, depending on the amount of assistance you use. I found this to be mostly accurate during my testing and even rode the battery until it died three separate times for a true reading. </p><p>The first was a 55-mile trip around Mid-Michigan where I used minimal assistance until it died close to 50 miles of riding. The ride was mostly flat and roughly 10 miles of it was on dirt roads, which had me wishing the bike had suspension. </p><p>The second trip was to have lunch with my wife at a restaurant a few towns over. I used maximum assist and the battery lasted for around 26 miles on relatively flat terrain. Even for the pedal-assist turned to its highest mode, getting 26 miles out of the battery was impressive. </p><p><div type="image" title="Electra Townie Go! 7D Electric Bike throttle" height="900" width="1200" msid="76081012" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Finally, on the third trip, the battery gave me 22.5 miles of flat riding, also on maximum assist. I experienced driving rain during the ride, which didn't seem to impact the bike at all. I was impressed by how well it maneuvered on wet surfaces and I didn't experience any sliding on wood boardwalks, either — though I wouldn't recommend riding on wet wood, at all. I've fallen far too many times on other bikes doing exactly that. </p><p><a href="https://www.avantlink.com/click.php?tt=cl&amp;mi=10248&amp;pw=184534&amp;ctc=&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rei.com%2Fproduct%2F170336%2Felectra-townie-go-7d-electric-bike7d-electric-bike" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">The Townie Go! 7D</a> also offers some serious get-up-and-go. From a standstill, I was able to reach full speed in roughly 5.5 seconds which was particularly impressive considering I weigh 240 pounds. Lighter riders will likely experience even better performance.</p><p>Hills are also a breeze with the <a href="https://www.avantlink.com/click.php?tt=cl&amp;mi=10248&amp;pw=184534&amp;ctc=&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rei.com%2Fproduct%2F170336%2Felectra-townie-go-7d-electric-bike7d-electric-bike" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">7D</a>. Mid-Michigan is fairly flat so the inclines were subdued but on the steepest grades I could find, I topped 17 mph with the max assist. However, these same inclines were brutal without assistance. The heft of the bike kept me at a slow 7 mph — and breathing quite heavily.</p><h2>A few cons to consider</h2><p><div type="image" title="Electra Townie Go! 7D Electric Bike pedal" height="900" width="1200" msid="76081014" hostid="261"></div></p><p><a href="https://www.avantlink.com/click.php?tt=cl&amp;mi=10248&amp;pw=184534&amp;ctc=&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rei.com%2Fproduct%2F170336%2Felectra-townie-go-7d-electric-bike7d-electric-bike" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">The Electra Townie Go! 7D</a> is designed to be a commuter bike the casual rider can use right away. However, it doesn't come with many of the features commuters might need, such as fenders, lights, or even a bell. Fortunately, these extras are easy enough to find at affordable prices but it would still be nice to see these included. The bike does come with a rear rack and chainguard and even without fenders, I didn't notice water kicking up in my face or creating a racing stripe on my back. </p><p>The weight of the bike is also a concern for anyone living in a walk-up apartment complex. Even carrying it up and down from my basement proved to be a bit of a pain. It may not be the ideal solution if you have to go up or down any flights of stairs to store it. You can lighten it up by removing the battery before carrying it, though. </p><h2>The bottom line</h2><p><div type="image" title="Electra Townie Go! 7D Electric Bike" height="900" width="1200" msid="76081018" hostid="261"></div></p><p>I've had several enjoyable trips with the <a href="https://www.avantlink.com/click.php?tt=cl&amp;mi=10248&amp;pw=184534&amp;ctc=&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rei.com%2Fproduct%2F170336%2Felectra-townie-go-7d-electric-bike7d-electric-bike" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Electra Townie Go! 7D</a> and I love how it extends the distance I can ride before my body tires out. It has great range and gets up to speed quickly — it's also one of the least expensive e-bikes available.</p><ul><li><strong>Should you buy it? </strong>We suggest test-driving any bike you consider buying. Regardless, I'm a bit picky when it comes to how I want a bike to feel. This wasn't a perfect fit for me but it was good enough, and the more I rode it, the more it grew on me. This would be an excellent transition bike for those who are sedentary and interested in starting to exercise. With its different levels of assistance, the Townie Go! 7D is also ideal for commuters who want to comfortably bike to work. </li><li><strong>What are your alternatives? </strong>I've only tested one other e-bike, the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PS6LDKY/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=biipf_031320_electra-townie-go-7d-review-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B07PS6LDKY&amp;linkId=f04fff6c4900b3b405d158333ce79f394900b3b405d158333ce79f39" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener nofollow">Schwinn Monroe</a>, which costs the same as the Townie Go! 7D but doesn't come with free assembly. I didn't get as much time with the Schwinn but it seemed speedier with its sleeker, lightweight design. The bike also has an impressive range of 45 miles. But the mere fact that Iran's powerful parliamentary speaker was on a panel with Russian President Vladimir Putin must have been a cause for some cheer despite the religious gloom in Tehran.</p><p class="p1">So must Putin's statements, which depicted the Islamic Repub­lic as an ally in "the fight against terrorism and radicalism." </p><p class="p1">Is the emerging Tehran-Moscow axis, as on display in war-ravaged Syria, a tactical marriage of convenience or does it herald the emergence of a strategic alliance?</p><p class="p1">On the surface, the two powers have converging policy objectives which bring them closer to each other. The immediate goal is to prevent the collapse of Bashar As­sad's regime in Damascus, to anni­hilate what remains of US-backed opposition groups in Syria and to bring about the total humiliation of the United States and its allies, thereby rolling back the post-Cold War American world order.</p><p class="p1">The axis may also be interested in perpetuating a low-intensity conflict in Syria, where the threat of the Islamic State (ISIS) not only legitimises its military presence but also can be used as a useful bo­gyman in the countries' respective dealings with the United States and Europe.</p><p class="p1">To this end, Tehran and Mos­cow have devised a division of labour and a burden-sharing ar­rangement, which may help them achieve these common objectives despite their differing strategic im­peratives.</p><p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Iranian media</span></p><p class="caption">Russia's <keyword id="6354810" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Defense">defense</keyword> minister in Tehran</p></div><p></p></div></div>Russia has committed itself to providing badly needed air support for the Syrian regime and its allies and its warplanes are conducting daily air strikes against anti-regime rebels. Moscow has also stepped up arms deliveries to Damascus.</p><p class="p1">The Islamic Republic is provid­ing the boots on the ground, with a growing force of Islamic Revo­lutionary Guards Corps units de­ployed in Syria along with Leba­nese Hezbollah fighters and Shia militias from Iraq, Afghanistan and even Pakistan supporting the badly weakened Syrian army.</p><p class="p1">This arrangement minimizes Russian and Iranian losses, leaving the path of martyrdom and heav­enly rewards to the more expenda­ble Shia militias and irregular forc­es. However, it remains to be seen if these measures will be enough to allow the Tehran-Moscow axis to achieve its immediate objectives.</p><p class="p1">What if the axis's initiatives are countered by increased external support to various opposition forc­es in Syria, by the United States, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, something that's already happen­ing to some extent?</p><p class="p1">To what degree are Tehran and Moscow willing to sustain their commitments in such a protracted war scenario?</p><p class="p1">Even if the immediate policy goals of the axis are reached, dif­ferences in strategic objectives in the medium and long term may cause tension between Tehran and Moscow. So would the increased manoeuverings of lesser characters on the Syrian chessboard, such as Assad.</p><p class="p1">Russia is likely to demand maxi­mum influence over Syria's devel­opment in return for Moscow's limited military engagement in that country. Russia may find it ex­pedient to sell out Iranian interests in Syria, if it manages to extract concessions from the United States on issues related to Syria or on a broader regional canvas.</p><p class="p1">Such action by Moscow would be consistent with Russian policy of using the Islamic Republic as a bar­gaining chip in its dealings with the United States.</p><p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Institute for the Study of War</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Putin's ludicrous claim that Mos­cow had been "deceived by the United States" with regard to Iran's nuclear programme was a crude at­tempt at covering his government's support for imposing UN Security Council sanctions on Iran while simultaneously extracting money and political concessions from Tehran in return for blocking even harsher resolutions against Iran.</p><p class="p1">The Islamic Republic's political leadership is well aware of Putin's cynical machinations. The July 14th nuclear agreement and the removal of crippling international sanctions have made Tehran less dependent on Russia and, at least in theory, provided Tehran with greater strategic manoeuverabil­ity in its dealings with Washington and Moscow.</p><p class="p1">Iran's use of US air support in the recapture of Tikrit from ISIS in March and Moscow's fear of greater Iranian-US military cooperation may have been one of the motives behind Russia's military interven­tion in Syria.</p><p class="p1">Assad, for his part, has an interest in gaining greater independence from both Russia and Iran. By using the Russian benefactor, Damascus can reduce its total dependence on Tehran's benevolence. Russia and Iran are tactical allies - but it might not stay that way

<p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP Photo/Vahid Salemi</span></p><p class="caption">Hassan Khomeini, grandson of the late revolutionary founder Ayatollah Khomeini, on the 17th anniversary of his death, in his mausoleum just outside Tehran, Iran, on June 4, 2006.</p></div><p></p></div></div>As Iran's fractious politi­cal elites prepare for the February 25, 2016, elec­tions for parliament and the Assembly of Experts, the clerical body that selects the country's Supreme Leader, there is growing speculation that Hassan Khomeini, grandson of the founder of the Is­lamic Republic, will run for a seat on the 82-member assembly.</p><p class="p1">His possible success is being seen in some quarters as a precursor to running for Supreme Leader, the position his grandfather, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, created when the Islamic revolution overthrew the monarchy in 1979.</p><p class="p1">The younger Khomeini gave cre­dence to this speculation when he addressed reformist political activ­ists visiting his grandfather's mau­soleum outside Tehran on August 28th.</p><p class="p1">"'I'm not saying you should not accept any responsibility in the Is­lamic Republic. If necessary, do an­ything… but if there are others, let them do the job'," Hassan Khomei­ni quoted his grandfather as telling his father.</p><p class="p1">"If one day it's necessary for me to do something, it would be wrong of me not to take the responsibil­ity upon my shoulders," Hassan Khomeini said.</p><p class="p1">In the Iranian media, Hassan Khomeini's statements were wide­ly interpreted as showing his readi­ness to run for the assembly, an­swering the call of former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, who upon declaring his own candidacy for the assembly in August, invited "all those who consider themselves righteous" to join the race.</p><p class="p1">Against this backdrop, the Iran Labour News Agency proclaimed on August 4th that the triumvirate of Hassan Khomeini, Rafsanjani and President Hassan Rohani is the most dynamic force in Iranian <keyword id="6358883" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Politics">politics</keyword>.</p><p class="p1">Clearly, Rafsanjani and Rohani supporters are already imagining a new Khomeini to succeed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was elected after Ruhollah Khomeini's death in 1989.</p><p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/khamenei.ir</span></p><p class="caption">Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei attends Friday prayers at Tehran University February 3, 2012. In the background is a portrait of his predecessor, Ayatollah Khomeini.</p></div><p></p></div></div>However, as he enters the fierce arena of Iranian politics, Hassan Khomeini, 42, would be wise to study the fate of his father, Ahmad, who was offered a similar proposi­tion by Rafsanjani but perished un­der mysterious circumstances at the age of 49.</p><p class="p1">He died suddenly on March 16, 1995, allegedly of a heart attack. But Saeed Emami, deputy head of the Intelligence Ministry who was arrested as the main culprit in the systematic elimination of dissident Iranian intellectuals in the 1990s, confessed he had assassinated Ah­mad Khomeini. Ahmad's impor­tance was not so much in his talent for politics as in his position as his father's gatekeeper: No one could access the guiding light of the revo­lution without his permission.</p><p class="p1">Amid the revolutionary turmoil of 1979, Rafsanjani soon realised Ahmad Khomeini's importance and began tempting him with positions such as general secretary of the Is­lamic Republican Party, which Raf­sanjani directed.</p><p class="p1">Rafsanjani even persuaded Ah­mad to run for president against the secular Abolhassan Bani-Sadr, the main candidate. On both occa­sions Ruhollah Khomeini expressly forbade his son to accept political or executive responsibilities.</p><p class="p1">The elder Khomeini believed that so long as his clan kept free of such involvement, it would be above factional disputes and un­likely to be held responsible for the failure of the executive branch in delivering on promises made to the Iranian people.</p><p class="p1">Accepting executive responsibil­ity would mean being asked why God's "Republic on Earth" has unemployment, a rickety public health service and, long after the 1980-88 war with Iraq, meat ra­tioning.</p><p class="p1">Rafsanjani's scheme seems to have worked. Throughout the 1980s Ahmad Khomeini helped him systematically destroy his political rivals by simply denying them access to his ageing father.</p><p class="p1">In return, Rafsanjani may well have promised Ahmad the man­tle of leadership after the revolu­tionary patriarch died. But when it came to the crunch, Rafsanjani supported the seemingly weaker Ali Khamenei as successor in 1989.</p><p class="p1">To the world at large, Ahmad Khomeini welcomed Khamenei's leadership. Ahmad Khomeini taped those conversations and produced them at a Supreme National Secu­rity Council meeting as proof Raf­sanjani was "an American agent."</p><p class="p1">There was even a report that a group of Ahmad Khomeini loyalists within the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) seized control of a missile battery in southern Iran seeking to target US military forces in Saudi Arabia to start a war that could help Khomeini's son seize power in Tehran. The plot was foiled by Mohsen Rezaei, then the IRGC commander.</p><p class="p1">Ahmad disclosed that his father had been against continuing the war with Iraq after Iranians lib­erated the south-western city of Khorramshahr in 1982. The war, he implied, only continued because Rafsanjani and others wanted to consolidate their power.</p><p class="p1">A few days before his mysteri­ous death, Ahmad Khomeini ac­cused the regime of betraying the ideals of his revered father.
