Liquid funds made up about 50% of this, witnessing outflows of Rs 72,665.97 crore. This was followed by money market funds, which lost Rs 23,420.84 crore during the month. Investors continued to repose strong faith in <keyword id="20300870" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="equity-mutual-funds" source="keywords">equity mutual funds</keyword>, which saw inflows worth Rs 34,419.26 crore during the month. The momentum in <keyword id="20444306" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sectoral-funds" source="keywords">sectoral funds</keyword> also continued, with them raking in Rs 13,254.63 crore in September. During the month, 4 new sectoral schemes were launched, which gathered a total of Rs 7,842 crore. This was the 43rd consecutive month for positive equities inflows, beginning March 2021. Multi-cap and large and mid-cap funds saw inflows of about Rs 3,500 crore last month, followed by flexi cap funds, which raked in Rs 3,214.57 crore. Amidst ongoing geopolitical concerns, investors chose to stay away from slightly risky investment avenues such as arbitrage funds, which lost Rs 3,531.93 crore during September. Arbitrage funds make money from price differences, which is generated by buying and selling similar securities simultaneously across different markets. Multi-asset allocation funds saw inflows worth Rs 4,070.37 crore during the month. Index funds and gold ETFs also saw funds worth Rs 1,960.29 crore and Rs 1,232.99 crore flowing in, respectively. September saw 13 new index funds launches, which amassed Rs 3,656 crore. All in all, 27 <keyword id="20867320" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-schemes" source="keywords">new schemes</keyword> were launched last month, which saw inflows worth Rs 14,575 crore. <h2>SIP accounts, AUM at all-time high</h2>The industry's net AUM (assets under management) stood at Rs 67,09,259.24 crores, with mutual fund folios also touching an all-time high of 21,05,15,684. The retail AUM, which comprises of equity, hybrid and solution oriented schemes, also touched an all-time high of Rs 40,44,098 crore, up from Rs 39,27,594 crore in August 2024. Inflows in SIP (Systematic Investment Plans) remained resilient, and witnessed an all-time high, with the number of new SIPs registered in September registered at 66,38,857. The <keyword id="20876064" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SIP-AUM" source="keywords">SIP AUM</keyword> was also at its highest ever, at Rs 13,81,703.94 crores for September. This stood at Rs 13,38,944.73 crores for August 2024 The number of SIP accounts were also at their highest ever at 9,87,44,171, along with SIP contribution, which recorded an all-time high of Rs 24,508.73 crores last month. The MF industry also reached the milestone of having 5,01,22,609 unique investors in September.

Sectoral funds continue lapping up investor money, debt funds see massive outflows in September 2024, shows AMFI data

The Reserve Bank on Friday announced the launch of a mobile app to enable <keyword id="19972907" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail-investors" source="keywords">retail investors</keyword> to participate in government securities (<keyword id="21202837" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="G-Secs" source="keywords">G-Secs</keyword>) or <keyword id="20283766" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-bonds" source="keywords">government bonds</keyword> market. <keyword id="21202838" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi-retail-direct-scheme" source="keywords">RBI Retail Direct Scheme</keyword>, launched in November 2021, gives access to individual investors to maintain gilt accounts with the <keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI" source="keywords">RBI</keyword> and invest in government securities. The Scheme enables investors to buy securities in primary auctions as well as buy/sell securities through the <keyword id="382785" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Negotiated-Dealing-System" source="Orion">Negotiated Dealing System</keyword> - <keyword id="21202839" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Order-Matching-system" source="Orion">Order Matching system</keyword> (NDS-OM) platform. "To further improve ease of access, a mobile application of the Retail Direct portal is being developed. The app will enable investors to buy and sell instruments on the go, at their convenience. The app will be available for use shortly," RBI Governor <keyword id="19913110" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shaktikanta-das" source="keywords">Shaktikanta Das</keyword> said, while announcing the first bi-monthly monetary policy for the current fiscal. The government is planning for gross market borrowing of Rs 14.13 lakh crore for 2024-25. Out of this Rs 7.5 lakh crore, or 53 per cent, is scheduled to be borrowed in the first half (H1). In a separate announcement, RBI permitted non-bank payment system operators to offer Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) wallets to encourage its wider use. Currently, CBDC pilots in the retail and wholesale segments are underway with more use-cases and more participating banks. "Continuing with this approach, it is proposed to make CBDC-Retail accessible to a broader segment of users in a sustained manner, by enabling non-bank payment system operators to offer CBDC wallets," he said. This is expected to enhance access and expand choices available to users apart from testing the resiliency of the CBDC platform to handle multi-channel transactions, he said, adding, necessary changes will be made to the system to facilitate this. In November 2022, the pilot of the wholesale CBDC, known as the Digital Rupee-Wholesale (e-W), was launched with the use case being limited to the settlement of secondary market transactions in government securities. In the following month, RBI rolled out a pilot in the retail version of the CBDC (e-R).

Moreover, according to Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) data, mutual funds industry assets under management (AUM) have crossed the ₹50 lakh-crore mark! Investments into equity mutual funds saw an inflow of ₹124,053 crore in the first nine months of 2023 indicating a strong interest and belief in the potential of the equity market among domestic investors. This was not of course without its share of blips. In April 2023, inflows into equity mutual funds stood at ₹6,480 crore, down 68% from March when it was ₹20,534 crore. Last time inflows were lower was in November 2022, when it stood at ₹2,258 crore. Inflows into equity mutual funds again halved in May, probably because high market valuations made investors book profits and stay away from fresh investments. However, ever since then the flows into equity mutual funds have remained steady, reaching a high of ₹19,932 crore crore in October. Small and mid caps steal the show According to AMFI data, as of December 6, 2023, the average one-year returns for 23 small-cap funds stood at 32.68%. In contrast, 28 mid-cap funds delivered average one-year returns of 28.02%, in the same period. By November end, AUM of mid-cap funds had crossed the ₹ lakh crore mark, a 69% rise as compared to last year. In fact, small cap funds registered inflows of ₹3,699.24 crore in November ,slightly lower than the ₹4,495.13 crore recorded in October. Small cap funds had registered a record inflow of ₹5,472 crore in June, with inflow into small cap mutual funds being the highest among all equity fund categories for the third straight month. In August, small cap funds saw an inflow of ₹4,265 crore, with a slight blip in September when inflows fell to ₹2,678.47. This has been driven by the ongoing economic recovery, which has fueled corporate earnings growth, particularly among smaller companies with high-growth potential. Investors are optimistic about the future prospects of these companies, leading them to seek exposure through small-cap funds. AMFI chairman said it was the outcome of a recency bias. The surge in investor interest in mid-cap funds has also been fueled by several factors, including India's robust economic recovery, the inherent growth potential of mid-cap companies, their reasonable valuations compared to large-cap stocks, and supportive government policies. Large-cap funds funds underperform Large cap funds, however, had a rather dull 2023. Large-cap mutual funds experienced significant outflows in June, July, and May, totaling ₹2,050 crore, ₹1,880 crore, and ₹1,362 crore, respectively, making these some of the worst months for large cap funds. However, following six consecutive months of outflows, large-cap funds experienced an inflow of ₹724 crore in October, signaling a resurgence in investor confidence in established companies. November saw an inflow of ₹306 crore. In fact, 58% of the large cap funds failed to beat their underlying indices in the first half of 2023. This can be due to the confluence of factors, including rising interest rates favoring bonds, regulatory changes limiting fund manager flexibility, investor rotation seeking higher growth in smaller-cap stocks, and underperformance in key sectors like technology and consumer discretionary. SIP contributions witness a steady rise One of the biggest trends is the steady increase in monthly SIP contributions. SIP inflows reached ₹1.66 lakh crore in the first 11 months of 2022, higher than ₹1.5 lakh crore in entire 2022. Contributions surpassed a record ₹17,000 crores in November. In November 2022, the SIP contribution stood at ₹13,306 crore. The number of SIP accounts were at the highest ever in November at 744.13 lakh crore, compared to 730.02 lakh crore in October. The total SIP AUM (assets under management) has also shown impressive growth, exceeding ₹6.42 lakh crores in October. Despite facing market fluctuations, SIPs have demonstrated remarkable resilience. The consistent inflows and stable AUM indicate that investors are adopting a disciplined approach and remain confident in the long-term prospects of the market.

But investors aren't cheering for a strong economy. In fact, markets are behaving like they want the opposite, with stocks mired in a deep sell-off as upbeat data suggests more aggressive moves by the Federal Reserve. Sure, inflation remains hot, as evidenced by Friday's Personal Consumption Expenditure data which showed prices climbed more than anticipated in January. But that is also part of the market's — and the economy's — conundrum.Following a dismal 2022 for the S&amp;P 500, which lost 20% last year, the stock market soared in the first six weeks of the year as traders bet that inflation was cooling and the Fed would be less aggressive with its policy.In the last two weeks though, the rally has stumbled as inflation concerns rear their head again. On Friday, PCE data for January came in hotter than expected, sending stocks plunging toward their second consecutive week of losses. This follows data earlier in the month that showed the US economy has been resilient in the face of higher interest rates. <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/jobs-report-january-federal-reserve-interest-rate-cuts-goldman-sachs-2023-2">Good economic news</a> has been having a negative impact on the market because it suggests the Fed is going to <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/fed-economists-outlook-recession-stocks-real-estate-prices-inflation-unemployment-2023-2?_gl=1*irgeay*_ga*MjA5NTAyMzYyOS4xNjYyNDcwMDc5*_ga_E21CV80ZCZ*MTY3NzI0NDU3Mi42MTEuMS4xNjc3MjQ1Nzc4LjAuMC4w">keep tightening the screws</a> on monetary policy, hitting corporate earnings growth and share prices. Investors have been in the latter mode for about a year now. But here's the catch: while a humming economy foreshadows more Fed hawkishness, that strength could save the US from a severe recession. <h3>The disconnect between markets and the economy</h3>Two recent data points stand out when probing for answers about the state of the US economy. The first is January's monster jobs report. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/job-growth-unemployment-rate-recession-outlook-january-jobs-report-2023-2">Employers added 517,000 jobs last month</a>, bringing the unemployment rate to a 53-year low of 3.6%.The second is consumer health, reflected in January's retail sales and consumer spending data, both of which exceeded estimates. Resurgent inflation is indeed the Fed's worst nightmare, but the data also prompts the question: Is a recession really in the cards, given the strength of the consumer and jobs market? Either way, the stock market doesn't seem to care. All investors can see is higher rates, which inflict the double whammy of eating into corporate earnings and making other investments more attractive compared to relatively high-risk equities. "This morning's data suggest the economy is very resilient and might prompt more bets that the Fed will need to take rates closer to 6.00%," wrote Oanda's Ed Moya in a note following the release of January PCE data. Meanwhile, Nationwide's chief of economic research Mark Hackett wrote in a note that recession odds are declining even as inflation remains hot and more rate hikes look likely. "The odds of a recession are still elevated, though Bloomberg's Recession Probability Forecast declined this week for just the second week since May 2021 to 60% over the next year. The Citigroup Economic Surprise Index surged to the best level since last April, gaining 60 points since mid-January, with data that measures current activity remaining strong," Hackett wrote. It wasn't long ago that Bloomberg's model was <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-10-17/forecast-for-us-recession-within-year-hits-100-in-blow-to-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">predicting a 100% chance of recession</a>. Even the inverted yield curve, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/inverted-yield-curve-recession-indicator-no-longer-works-bank-reserves-2023-2?_gl=1*vjfy9p*_ga*MjA5NTAyMzYyOS4xNjYyNDcwMDc5*_ga_E21CV80ZCZ*MTY3NzA4MTk0NS42MDEuMS4xNjc3MDgyNTg3LjAuMC4w&amp;utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_source=markets">history's most reliable recession indicator</a>, hasn't tempered enthusiasm. This is because there's another pocket of resilience compared to previous economic downturns. As Ned Davis Research put it: "In an ample reserves regime that we've been in post-[financial crisis], banks also have plenty of deposits. As a result, inverted curves are less effective in the transmission of financial conditions to the real economy."This month, economist Jeremy Siegel also reiterated his view that the Fed doesn't need to spark a downturn to fight inflation, and told investors to stop throwing a "tantrum" over inflation news.Siegel has long held the view that inflation is actually overstated in the official statistics given the lag between rate hikes and when their effect shows up in the real economy. So there's strength underpinning the economy, even as traders prepare for the worst and the Fed digs in for a longer fight against high prices. He says that retail participation has become more important in the home market. “Ten years back, markets were completely driven by FPIs but today the situation has changed. Nobody is bothered if FPIs are putting or pulling money. It does not affect the market in any way and they are only now for headlines,” said Sundaresan at 14th Capital Market Summit on Wednesday. FII exits have been making headlines especially since December last year, while impacting markets and inducing volatility. In January, FIIs sold Indian equities worth ₹41,464 crore and in February, so far, they have sold ₹1,041 crore equities. As a result, Sensex has dropped over 2%, and Indian markets have been underperforming compared to others in China and Hong Kong. Retail participation balances flows in the home markets The SEBI director believes that retail investors are confident in Indian markets, and that’s enough to hold the markets strong despite FII exits. “Participation by retail investors has given fillip to this market that can do with or without FPIs. We should be proud of this. This clearly shows there is a good progressing capital formation. This is definitely proving that the savings potential of India is being channeled into capital markets. Capital markets are having enough support from non-FPIs so that markets are balanced,” added Sundaresan. He added that Indian markets are stable with considerably lower volatility compared to other markets. “Despite economic slowdown, increasing interest rates, we have a resilient market,” he said. He added that there is a lack of investor awareness, as new investors are incurring hefty losses in derivatives markets. “Data shows that 9 out of 10 are losing money in options in F&amp;O markets as everybody thinks they can play in options markets. There is a lot of scope for investor education,” said Sundaresan. Regulatory overreach, rising litigations are market weaknesses Lack of investor awareness, regulatory overreach and litigant mindset are weaknesses in our markets, said the SEBI official. The cost of compliance has increased substantially with non-compliances leading to a rise in the number of litigations. For which, he says there is a need to increase self governance. He cited the example of the government’s AGR (adjusted gross revenue) based revenue sharing model with the telecom players wherein the companies are unable to pay the dues, which eventually increases government’s stake. Retail investors have pared back their stock purchases as they remain hesitant to dive back into the market after a difficult 2022, when the Nasdaq Composite and the S&amp;P 500 fell 31% and 19.4%, respectively.In 2023, stocks have been surprisingly resilient despite a string of bank failures and more central bank tightening that's sparked heightened talk of a recession. The Nasdaq has jumped 16% year-to-date, while the S&amp;P 500 surged 7.8%. But individual investors appear to be missing out on these gains for the most part, according to Vanda. "As equities currently sit at similar bear-market-rally peaks, we suspect that retail investors will remain hesitant to raise their risk exposure as they got burned multiple times last year," VandaTrack analysts wrote in a Thursday note. "In addition, growing recession risks could become a stronger headwind holding retail animal spirits at bay."Average retail investor allocations are very concentrated and largely titled towards tech stocks. Nearly 30% of retail portfolios are in Tesla and Apple, along with 10% in other mega-caps like Nvidia."This prolonged bear market – particularly in tech - along with recent growing fears of a recession are undoubtedly weighing on sentiment," the note reads. "Additionally, in the short term, the fact that bank and financial stocks have not been able to recover significantly despite increased buying from individual investors is making some people question whether buying the dip was a good idea."A strong earnings season, however, could could boost risk appetite for the retail investor cohort. JPMorgan, BlackRock, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo all reported quarterly results on Friday, and earnings so far are looking upbeat. "[This depends] on which stocks report better-than-expected earnings and whether there will be clear signs around the potential timing of the impending recession," analysts said. "Better figures or convincing forward guidance from bank or tech stocks will likely lead to a boost in retail purchases."
