Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Clarksburg, West Virginia, pleaded guilty to seven counts of second-degree <keyword id="13542" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Murder">murder</keyword> and one count of attempted murder last July.</p><p>From July 2017 to June 2018, Mays administered fatal doses of insulin, a hormone used to treat diabetics, to seven male patients, all over the age of 80, many of whom did not actually have diabetes, <a href="https://www.wvnd.uscourts.gov/sites/wvnd/files/Information.pdf">according to court documents</a>. </p><p>After Mays <a href="https://www.insider.com/west-virginia-nursing-assistant-admits-to-killing-7-patients-2020-7?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=sf-bi-main&amp;utm_source=facebook.com&amp;fbclid=IwAR1Izq9gATQZ5gXXr3A2ilMCPemKm1Ic3O81xckbEKBSUjLZvhri_ALRiDwZvhri_ALRiDw">pleaded guilty</a> last year, she <a href="https://assets.documentcloud.org/documents/20705687/vaoig-20-03593-140.pdf">told investigators</a> she had administered the deadly doses because she believed the men to be suffering and wanted to help them "pass gently." But none of the victims had been close to death and many of them were expected to be discharged within weeks of their poisoning, <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/veterans/2021/05/11/former-va-health-worker-sentenced-life-in-prison-for-murdering-seven-patients-via-insulin-poisoning/">according to The Military Times.</a> </p><p>Mays also previously told investigators her actions gave her a "sense of control" in her personal and professional life, which she said was plagued with chaos and stress.</p><p>During her sentencing, Mays' lawyer, Jay McCamic argued longtime mental health issues had played a role in Mays' actions. He also stressed her former military service as a reason for a lighter sentence. </p><p>"I know that there's no words that I can say that would alter the families' pain and comfort," Mays said during her sentencing, <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/monster-life-sentences-hospital-worker-deaths-77625295">according to ABC News.</a> "I don't ask for forgiveness because I don't think I could forgive anyone for doing what I did." </p><p>Federal Judge Thomas Kleeh had harsh words for Mays.</p><p>"Ms. Mays, several times your counsel has made the point that you shouldn't be considered a monster," Kleeh said during the hearing, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/05/11/us/veteran-health-care-west-virginia-sentence/index.html">according to CNN.</a></p><p>"Respectfully, I disagree with that. You are the worst kind. You are the monster that no one sees coming. And you have made liars of everyone who has ever told their kids that monsters don't exist and that evil does not exist in the world," Kleeh said.</p><p>Before she was sentenced, families of Mays' victims were able to share stories of the victims in a push for stricter sentencing. Mays' victims were: Army veterans Robert Lee Kozul Sr.; Archie Edgell; Felix Kirk McDermott; William Holloway; Navy veteran Robert Edge Sr.; Air Force veteran George Nelson Shaw Sr., and Army and Air Force veteran Raymond Golden.</p><p>Mays was also sentenced to 20 years for assault with intent to commit murder in the death of Navy veteran Russell Posey Sr.</p><p>Last October, families of six of the victims reached settlements with the federal government, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/10/12/us/west-virginia-va-hospital-deaths-settlements/index.html">according to CNN.</a></p>

The movie makes the circumstances around Mollie's mother, Lizzie (Tantoo Cardinal), and sister Minnie (Jillian Dion) appear more mysterious so they can be easily explained away as natural causes. (Lizzie is older and Minnie dies of <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/prions/cwd/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wasting illness</a>.)</p><p>But the film also implies Mollie was a target, suffering from a mysterious illness of her own as those around her died.</p><p>Despite claiming to love his wife dearly, Ernest and doctors (provided by Hale) appear to slowly poison Mollie while administering insulin shots for diabetes, adding something to her insulin.</p><p>Mollie never voices suspicions of poison aloud, but tells her priest she fears for her life and becomes wary of food she's served. </p><p>It's not until the film's final scene between Mollie and her husband that she questions the contents of her insulin shots and whether or not she was poisoned. Ernest denies the accusation and she walks out on him.</p><p>The rest of the movie is relayed in a radio broadcast presented as a play, quickly telling viewers that Mollie divorced Ernest, remarried, and then died a few years later.</p><p>If the ending left you with more questions than answers about her illness and fate, here's what really happened to Mollie.</p><h2><strong>Was Mollie Burkhart being poisoned by her husband and doctors?</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="black and white portrait of Mollie Kyle, Killers of the Flower Moon" height="900" width="1200" msid="104593575" hostid="261" sizebytes="26822"></div><p>The film never makes it clear what Ernest and the doctors mix into Mollie's insulin. Hale told Ernest, who's portrayed as a suggestible simpleton, the cocktail would slow her down.</p><p>The movie makes it look like Ernest isn't even sure what's in the vials he pours into his wife's insulin, giving him plausible deniability. Late in the film, Ernest adds some of the clear liquid into his liquor. It's hard to believe that Ernest would have knowingly consumed poison.</p><p>In Grann's book, he writes that Mollie was more forthcoming with her priest about a concern that someone was trying to poison her: "Then, in late 1925, the local priest received a secret message from Mollie. Her life, she said, was in danger. An agent from the Office of Indian Affairs soon picked up another report: Mollie wasn't dying of diabetes at all; she, too, was being poisoned." </p><p>Grann reported that government officials working for the Office of Indian Affairs were concerned Mollie was slowly being poisoned from "injections of what was supposed to be insulin."</p><p>When authorities later checked on a gravely ill Mollie, they assessed that someone was secretly and slowly poisoning her.</p><p>Ernest really never admitted having any knowledge about his wife being poisoned. Grann wrote that Ernest's uncle may not have believed he could kill his own wife. According to National Geographic, Ernest also <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?amazonTrackingID=biauto-63725-20&amp;h=44e70c4443fa9b934a4de39ca34e1591f143401bea7b2807ca158c5021c28faf&amp;postID=653032813f64add278f53324&amp;postSlug=killers-of-the-flower-moon-what-happened-to-mollie-kyle-2023-10&amp;site=in&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nationalgeographic.com%2Fhistory%2Farticle%2Fosage-murders-killers-of-the-flower-moon" target="_blank" rel="noopener">gave Mollie poison-laced whiskey to drink</a>, but Grann's book says it couldn't be proven who was responsible for poisoning Mollie.</p><h2><strong>Mollie divorced Ernest and remarried</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Leonardo DiCaprio Lily Gladstone Killers of the Flower Moon" height="1280" width="2560" msid="104593576" hostid="261" sizebytes="154866"></div><p>According to Grann, Mollie divorced Ernest shortly after learning that he knew the truth about her sister Anna's murder, writing that she "could no longer look at Ernest." </p><p>From that point on, Mollie "recoiled in horror" at Ernest's name. Ernest was sentenced to <a href="https://www.okhistory.org/publications/enc/entry.php?entry=OS005" target="_blank" rel="noopener">life in prison at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary at McAlester</a> after pleading guilty to murdering Smith.</p><p>In 1928, Mollie married John Cobb and the two lived on the Osage reservation until her death in June 1937 at the age of 50. Grann wrote that her death wasn't considered suspicious.</p><p>Ernest was <a href="https://digitalprairie.ok.gov/digital/collection/okresources/id/174570/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">paroled that same year</a> and received <a href="https://www.okhistory.org/publications/enc/entry.php?entry=OS005" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a full pardon in 1965</a>. </p><p>Mollie is survived by her granddaughter, Margie Burkhart, <a href="https://people.com/killers-of-the-flower-moon-granddaughter-talks-family-history-8350550" target="_blank" rel="noopener">who told People her grandmother was shunned by many</a> in the community for initially standing by Ernest. Margie met her grandfather as a teenager before his death in 1986, describing him as someone who "looked like a sweet little man," but aware of what he did to her family.</p><p>"I have a lot of anger towards him," Margie told People. "He took away my whole family. He took away potential cousins."</p>

According to the agreement, Mays "willfully, deliberately, and without authorization" administered the insulin to the patients, causing seven of the deaths.</p><p>Mays also administered the unauthorized insulin to an eighth patient, who later died, but a medical examiner did not determine that insulin was the "but-for cause" of death, according to the plea agreement.</p><p>Mays "has admitted to actions that ended the lives of several military veterans who served our country honorably," US Attorney Bill Powell said in a <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndwv/pr/former-va-hospital-nursing-assistant-admits-murdering-seven-veterans-and-assault-intent">statement</a>. All were military veterans.</p><p>"Ms. Mays knew or should have known that the victims of the offenses were vulnerable victims due to age and physical and/or mental condition," the plea agreement said.</p><h2>Mays administered the insulin as she sat with patients alone during her night shifts</h2><p>Mays' job as a nursing assistant entailed "measuring patients' vital signs, documenting patients' intake and output, testing patients' blood glucose levels with a glucometer, and sitting one-on-one with patients who required close observation," the plea agreement said.</p><p>She was never at any time authorized to give patients any medications, according to the document.</p><p>The Office of the Inspector General for the Department of Veterans Affairs released a <a href="https://www.va.gov/oig/pubs/press-releases/VAOIG-StatementonClarksburgVAMedicalCenter.pdf">statement</a> saying agents identified Mays as a person of interest within days of learning of the suspicious deaths at the hospital. </p><p><div type="image" title="west virginia va hospital" height="1334" width="2000" msid="77007707" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Investigators conducted roughly 350 interviews, issued more than 60 subpoenas and search warrants, and reviewed 1,200 timecards from employees at the facility and 670,000 employee emails.
