Constance, 65, has nearly $200,000 in student debt, an amount that's ballooned since she graduated from law school in 1994. Constance — who requested to go by her first name for privacy — went through periods during which her kids' expenses took up most of her salary. He also said that borrowers should expect more action on student-loan industry regulation, pointing to the Education Department's restructuring of servicers' contracts over the past year. Those changes have enabled the department to process debt relief applications quicker and implement more safeguards for borrowers to ensure their servicers are fulfilling their contractual obligations.<h2 id="a6faf6f8-07ba-4a7e-9d8c-539861222c09">Harris vs. Trump on student loans</h2>Even though both Harris and Trump provided minimal detail on how they would address student debt, Partridge said it's helpful to look back on their previous actions."I would expect continued improvements and limited expansions of debt relief where legally possible under a Harris-Walz administration," Partridge said.She said the Trump administration "didn't take any major steps" to fix long-standing issues, like backlogs with Public Service Loan Forgiveness and borrower defense applications. Borrowers should not expect expanded relief or reform should Trump win the election. He also lauded the Supreme Court decision striking down Biden's debt relief.The composition of Congress will also impact what's in store for student-loan borrowers — Republican control would mean that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gop-bill-overhaul-student-loan-repayment-stop-debt-relief-foxx-2024-1">previously introduced legislation</a> to prevent relief could be signed into law."Where is the forgiveness for the guy who didn't go to college but is working to pay off the loan on the truck he takes to work? What about the woman who paid off her student loans, but is now struggling to afford her mortgage? Is the administration providing them relief? Of course not," Sen. Bill Cassidy, the top Republican on the Senate Education Committee, said in a recent statement.Regardless of who wins the election, legal challenges to debt relief will keep borrowers in limbo. Kvaal said the fight isn't over, and the Biden administration will work to provide relief under its authority as long as it can."It has gone to the full extent of its authority to offer relief to borrowers," Kvaal said. "We are fighting currently in court to offer more debt relief, but we also are taking dozens of actions that are not contested in court that have helped millions of borrowers."

However, when Nirmalee Chaterjee (named changed) wanted to apply for a home loan in March, she found that her Credit Information Bureau India Limited or CIBIL score was about 650 since she had missed a few credit card payments. Over the next few months, Chatterjee made it a point to be more disciplined and make an effort to improve her credit score. How to improve your credit score There are several ways to improve your credit score. Pay your <keyword id="133020" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit-card-bills" source="Orion">credit card bills</keyword> and EMIs on time: Consistent timely payment of dues is critical in maintaining a good credit score and improving it. “Borrowers should repay all loan instalments and credit card bills on time as any overdue payment results in a severe deterioration in score,” says Saikrishnan Srinivasan, Managing Director, Experian Credit Information Company of India. Chatterjee ensured she paid all her credit card bills and EMIs on time. If her credit card statement showed a due amount of ₹20,000, she paid it in full by the due date or even before. This consistent on-time payment reflected positively on her credit report. Have a long <keyword id="2490224" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="repayment-history" source="Orion">repayment history</keyword>: The longer your good credit history the better chances of having a higher score. Additionally, the type of product taken, and the amount of credit availed also impacts the score. "Borrowers should avoid taking excessive credit within a short span of time, as it may increase the risk for the lender and thereby affect the score adversely," says Srinivasan. <keyword id="17612475" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit-utilisation" source="Orion">Credit utilisation</keyword>: Utilisation of credit cards should be kept low as compared to the credit limit. If a customer keeps a high outstanding balance which is near the credit limit on the card, it can negatively impact the score in the short term. Chatterjee managed her credit utilisation. The credit limit on her credit card credit was ₹1,00,000, she aimed to keep her spending below 30% of that limit, around ₹30,000. This helped maintain a healthy credit utilisation ratio, which further perked up her credit score. Check your credit score regularly: It is important to review your credit score regularly and see whether it is improving. Seeing it slightly improve can also serve as a motivation to be more disciplined in financial matters. Plus there could be some errors which pull down your credit score. In such instances one needs to get in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/personal-finance/news/unhappy-with-your-credit-score-heres-how-you-can-check-for-errors-and-rectify/articleshow/103269553.cms">touch with the credit bureau </a>and get it rectified. Chatterjee reviewed her credit report regularly and noticed an error—an old closed loan was still marked as active. She contacted the credit bureau and got it rectified, raising her score further. Things you should avoid doing Avoid multiple credit inquiries: Every credit application results in a hard inquiry on your credit report, and multiple inquiries can signal financial stress to lenders. “So, avoid unnecessary new credit applications, especially when planning major financial decisions like buying a home or car,” says Adhil Shetty, CEO, BankBazaar, a financial marketplace. Avoid EMI reductions or loan restructuring: While facing financial challenges, it might be tempting to opt for EMI reductions or loan restructuring. “However, these factors go on to indicate that you are not in a financially comfortable position, leading to lower credit scores. Avoid such actions, especially when you are trying to repair your score,” says Shetty. Cancel credit cards with caution: If you hold several credit cards with similar fees or benefits, think about cancelling similar cards, but do so carefully. Closing cards can affect your credit use ratio. Prioritise cancelling the most recent card over the oldest one since the older card reflects longer credit history and better illustrates your repayment habits if you've been consistent in the past. Last time Chatterjee checked, her credit score was 725 and she is confident of raising it to the 750 mark in the next few months. Improving your credit score is a lot like losing weight, you will not see results in a day. Depending on what part of the borrower’s behaviour has changed in the recent past, it may take between one month to almost a year to see the full impact of improvements in the score.

Credit score improvement requires strict discipline but it is possible – Here’s how to go about it

<ul><li>The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is looking at the one-time restructuring of all loans, which includes personal loans as well. </li><li>Provided you didn’t default on your loans as of 1 March 2020, you can apply to change the payment plan on your loan. </li><li>RBI has set a deadline of 1 December 2020 for all restructuring requests to be put into play and implemented within 90 days of being invoked. </li></ul>Car loans, home loans, or any kind of personal loan that you couldn’t make the payments on are now eligible for restructuring. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that it will open up a window for a one-time <keyword id="444301" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="restructuring-of-loans">restructuring of loans</keyword> — all loans — that were impacted by COVID 19. <div type="image" title="Overall exoposure" msid="77392046" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Loans under moratorium with banks across India as a percentage of total outstanding loans &amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> This means that you’re struggling to pay off your personal loans, you can ask the bank to modify the terms of repayment, get additional credit to rebuild or even extend the moratorium period. The outstanding amount of debt at that point of time will be considered for restructuring. You have till 31 December to push for a new payment plan As per the RBI’s circular, resolution under the new mechanism has to be invoked by 31 December 2020. Once invoked, it must be implemented within 90 days. However, RBI suggests that banks and other lending institutions should try and kick off their plans earlier than the due dates. The resolution could include the following features: <ul><li>Rescheduling of payments </li><li>Conversion of interest accrued into another credit facility </li><li>Granting of moratorium </li><li>Modification of overall tenor of the loan </li></ul>The terms and conditions of how this will be determined depending on your projected income streams over the next two years. Provided the restructuring plan is put in place within the stipulated timeline, then your loan will not be classified as a non-performing asset (NPA). However, if that is not the case then rating of the loan will be done as per the borrower’s actual performance. While analysing the Rolex Rings’ financials, it is evident that the company is under a corporate debt restructuring (CDR) cell as it was unable to pay its debt on time to banks and financial institutions. The company had approached the corporate debt restructuring (CDR) cell for restructuring debt in the financial year 2013. CDR is a scheme evolved by the RBI wherein it reduces the burden of debts on the company by decreasing the rates paid and increasing the duration of the debt. The company had a restructured term debt of ₹4,87 crore. As on March 31, 2021, the percentage of the restructured term debt still due is 6.89% amounting to ₹33 crore. “In the first quarter of FY22, the company has paid about ₹10.5 crore and the remaining will be paid in the next couple of quarters. Before March 2022, we should be out of CDR,” said Doshi. Despite investments coming in, the company has made certain delayed repayment of loans and interest in FY18 and FY19 to financial institutions and banks to the extent of ₹103 crore and ₹37 crore respectively. “We had certain defaults or rather not defaults, but delays from long term obligations, for example it is due on January 1 and we paid on January 3 or something like that. This is mainly because of working capital squeeze. Our revenue has gone up significantly, but our working capital limits by the lender and has not been increased because many of our lenders are under prompt corrective action (PCA) so that is why we had a bit delay,” said Hiren Doshi, chief financial officer (CFO) of Rolex Rings in an interview with Business Insider. Under the PCA regime by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), business restraints are imposed on struggling banks. Under PCA, banks are asked to reduce loan concentration to individual, group, sector, and company which means they cannot lend more loans to particular sections. “We cannot assure you that we will be able to make future payment of interest and repayment of borrowings in a timely manner or at all and that the relevant lenders will not impose, among others, default interest, penalties or termination of the facilities,” the company said in its red herring prospectus (RHP). This way the company will have enough funds for working capital requirements which will probably lower down the chances for any further delays. While the automotive components manufacturer is looking to raise ₹731 crore through the public listing, only ₹56 crore is fresh issue. The company’s biggest shareholder Rivendell PE, which currently holds 41% stake or 1.09 crore shares, will sell 28% or 75 lakh shares through the IPO. In 2007, Rivendell had invested ₹151 crore in the company and thereafter it made an additional investment of ₹12.5 crore in 2011 totalling to ₹163.50 crore. Rolex Rings’ IPO to help company focus on growth and come out of corporate debt restructuring

It will set up a new mechanism for stressed assets that need rescuing and the existing scheme for restructuring MSMEs has been extended. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="77387591" title="‘Watchful’ RBI leaves repo rate unchanged to keep inflation in check" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> Governor <keyword id="6359111" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shaktikanta-Das">Shaktikanta Das</keyword> said that the Reserve Bank of India will set up a committee under KV Kamath ⁠— the former chairman of BRICS Bank and ICICI Bank ⁠— to set the parameters and benchmarks for this programme aimed at the resolution of stressed loans. The existing scheme for restructuring MSMEs is being extended to cover loans that were classified as standard as of March 1. Das said that for any new borrowers coming into the fold that the restructuring has to be implemented before 31 March 2021. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="77328145" title="One-time loan restructuring dilemma - RBI won’t commit, and India Inc won’t stop asking for it" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> “The underlying theme of this resolution window is the preservation of the soundness of the Indian banking sector,” said Das highlighting that safeguards will be put in place like prudent entry norms, clearly defined boundary conditions, specific binding covenants, independent validation and strict post-implementation performance monitoring. The one-time restructuring of loans or resolution window will be implemented under the Prudential Framework dated 7 June 2019. Prudent entry norms Banks and other lending institutions can only extend this facility to borrowers that are facing stress on account of COVID 19. But when it comes to types of loans, everyone is fair game — from big corporate loans to personal loans. Banks will also need to make sure that any resolution plan adheres to the eligibility criteria put forward by the RBI. For instance, MSME borrowers with aggregate exposure of ₹25,000 crore or less as of March 1 will not be eligible. Financial service providers, credit societies, and government loans will not be eligible either. The Expert Committee headed by Kamath will also bring in sector specific benchmark ranges for the financial parameters that need to be taken into account. Clearly defined boundary norms In addition to the financial parameters that will cover aspects of leverage, liquidity, and debt serviceability among other things, the Expert Committee will also be called on to vet resolution plans for loans where the amount is ₹1,500 crore or more. The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has suggested that business should only be given enough money to survive, not grow and the money should be given on priority — it will have precedence over all other obligations of the company. The CII had also recommended that loans not be classified as non-performing assets (NPAs) as a part of the restructuring. RBI seems to agree provided the resturcturing of loans is carried out within the stipulated timlines. This means that banks will still have to set aside 15% of the loan value to cover the default risk. Which means the levels of provisioning will continue to remain high and the demand for capital is unlikely to subside if bad loans grow. Constant monitoring Considering the uncertainty brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, borrowers are likely to be more conservative in their estimates for recovery. The difference could be as much as a borrower needing one year to recover in a pre-COVID world versus five years to recover post-COVID, according to EY analyst Abizer Diwanji. The RBI is only allowing banks to give up to two years for borrowers to pay back the pending amount of their loans. RBI brings in KV Kamath to set the boundaries for a one-time restructuring of loans

New Delhi, Aug 17 (IANS) The Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) move on one-time loan restructuring will help soften the Covid-19 pandemic's impact on the asset quality of banks, CRISIL Ratings has said in a report earlier. According to the rating agency, without the loan restructuring support, gross non-performing assets (NPAs) could have touched a two-decade high of 11.5 % by the end of this fiscal, but will now likely print considerably below that level. The central bank has permitted relaxations for corporate loans under the June 2019 Prudential Framework on Resolution of Stressed Assets. These will benefit borrowers in most categories. Indeed, in a first, the restructuring option has been extended to retail borrowers as well, given that many of them may face challenges in servicing debt owing to salary cuts and job losses. Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which have been substantially a ffected by the pandemic-led disruptions, have also got relief in the form of a three-month extension in the existing restructuring scheme, i.e. till Mar ch 31, 2021. The major beneficiaries, though, will be sub-Rs 500 crore corporate exposures and retail exposures, which were earlier expected to see the highest increase in NPAs in percentage terms. The debt at risk in these segments - or loans at risk of slipping into NPAs this fiscal unless restructured by banks - is a sizeable Rs 3 lakh crore, the report has said. Krishnan Sitaraman, Senior Director, CRISIL Ratings, said, "In the corporate segment, the situation today is different from the previous asset quality stress cycle, which started four years ago. Last time, the NPAs came primarily from bigger, chunkier accounts, whereas this time, an analysis of the top 100 exposures of our large, rated banks reveals that following a period of consolidation and deleveraging, these entities are likely to be better-positioned to withstand the current challenges. The key beneficiaries of the RBI's measures, though, will be small and mid-sized accounts, which are far less resilient in the current situation." CRISIL's analysis of the credit profile of banking sector exposures over Rs 25 crore bears this out. The study, covering 14,000 companies that constitute over 75% of the overall corporate portfolio of banks, shows that the debt at risk in corporate loan accounts with exposure less than Rs 500 crore is Rs 2 lakh crore. As a proportion of loans outstanding in this segment, it is 5 times that for larger corporate loan accounts with exposure more than Rs 500 crore. Further, the retail segment, which was considered a safe haven for banks in r ecent years, is witnessing significant pressure, given the stress being faced by salaried as well as self-employed borrowers. While home loans, the largest secured segment, would be less at risk owing to the psychological attachment of Indians to the homes they live in, and the priority they accord to repaying home loans, this does not hold for segments such as unsecured loans. The total debt at risk in the retail segment is estimated to be Rs 1 lakh crore. Asset quality in the MSME segment, which is among the most vulnerable, is already benefitting from the restructuring scheme that was in force till December 31, 2020, as well as measures such as the Rs 3 lakh crore Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme. With the proposed extension of the restructuring scheme, the reported gross NPA for the segment is, therefore, unlikely to see much of an increase vis-A-vis March 2020 levels. Subha Sri Narayanan, Director, CRISIL Ratings, said, "While the RBI measures will cushion the rise in NPAs, implementation is key, as are individual banks' policies on extending these relaxations to customers. For corporate loans, given the requirements of participation by lenders having 75% of exposure by value and 60% by number, and independent credit assessment by a credit rating agency, as well as the stringent timelines for invocation and implementation, we are likely to see banks being selective in extending restructuring. On the retail side, banks could follow different paths, with the well-capitalised ones choosing to recognise more of the stressed loans as NPAs rather than restructuring these." Factors such as prescribed eligibility criteria, additional provisioning requirements, and capping of restructuring tenures are expected to play a role in limiting the extent of restructured assets. From meeting its inflation mandate to keeping money circulating in the economy to dealing with loans — RBI’s policy decision could set the tone for how the apex bank expects the next few months to go. The moratorium conundrum Many banks and industry experts are of the opinion that another moratorium on loan repayments is not required going forward. The RBI first announced a three-month moratorium from March to May then extended the limit to August 31 leading to a lot of uncertainty when it comes to a bank’s balance sheets. The call for one-time restructuring Rather than delay payments further, Indian industry leaders are suggesting that a one-time restructuring of all loans should be put on the table. Businesses, on the other hand, don’t want to be declared NPA in order to be restructured since that blocks incremental funding. For any of this to happen, banks need to be incentivized to pump more money into loans on the verge of collapse. RBI’s inflation-targeting mandate Former RBI Deputy Governor Viral Acharya <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/trends/current-affairs-trends/focus-on-inflation-over-growth-at-next-policy-review-meet-viral-acharya-to-rbi-5631091.html">believes</a> that the apex bank should ‘respect’ its core mandate and get inflation in India under control. But, it’s not a simple choice because of the relationship inflation shares with the repo rate. The RBI has slashed the repo rate twice in the last 4 months — once during the March MPC by 75 basis points (bps) and again in an off-cycle meeting in May by another 40 bps. 100 bps make up one percent and the repo rate is one of the instruments that the RBI has on hand to control inflation and spur growth. The rate currently stands at 4%. The repo rate and inflation share an inverse relationship. While dipping the repo rate further could make inflation worse, increasing it would make it more expensive for banks to borrow. The RBI is required to keep inflation in India between 2% to 6% as per its inflation targeting mechanism — or core mandate as Acharya put it.
