But that can be a blessing or a curse for a documentary.Done effectively, reenactments can be memorable like the HBO hit "McMillions" or the fantastic "Dark Side of the Ring" series on Vice. However, if they come off cheesy and unrealistic - think "Unsolved Mysteries" or ABC's "20/20" - it takes viewers out of the story completely.But Vasarhelyi and Chin quickly realized they had an ace in the hole. The small group of divers - whose lifelong hobby of going into narrow underwater caves was instrumental in the saving of the kids - didn't just want to supervise the reenactments, they were willing to star in them."It had to be them," Chin told Insider of having the real-live divers star in their own reenactments.<div type="image" title="Diver in the water" height="2160" width="3840" msid="86998589" hostid="261"></div><h2>The filmmakers used the Thai cave divers in the reenactments because authenticity was essential</h2>Close to the end of doing their principal interviews for "The Rescue," Vasarhelyi and Chin traveled to the famed Pinewood Studios in the UK. Known as the site where some of the biggest Hollywood blockbusters are shot, the doc filmmakers were there to film the crucial reenactments using a cave set submerged in a water tank.Rick Stanton, a retired firefighter; his friend John Volanthen, an IT consultant; and a handful of other cave divers who were involved in the <keyword id="12095480" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="thai-cave-rescue" source="Orion">Thai cave rescue</keyword> brought all their suits and equipment to Pinewood to recount what they actually did.Vasarhelyi and Chin are known best for their death-defying documentaries like the Oscar-winning "<keyword id="12307067" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="free-solo" source="Orion">Free Solo</keyword>," which chronicled Alex Honnold climbing El Capitan in Yosemite National Park without a rope. "So we had a cave that wasn't big at all."The first week of shooting was so frustrating, Vasarhelyi said the crew began walking around Pinewood to see if there was another cave option."The DP was walking around and he saw a piece of someone else's cave, like from some action movie," Vasarhelyi said."It was triple our size and he was like, 'Let's take that cave' and we got permission to get it," Vasarhelyi continued. "But we didn't know if it could be submerged, if it would disintegrate right when it hit the water. And it's too expensive to just drain tanks when things don't work so it was just a lot of hope it would work and it lasted just long enough for us to use it underwater." Finally, with a proper underwater set, the filmmakers were ready for the final week of shooting. But there was still a nagging anxiety about the reenactments."We didn't think it was going to work," Chin admitted.<div type="image" title="Cave diver in an underwater cave" height="2160" width="3840" msid="86998593" hostid="261"></div><h2>'We were worried we were going too far with the dramatics'</h2>As the divers reenacted their remarkable rescue for the cameras, both Vasarhelyi and Chin were concerned what they were filming was going the way of bad "Unsolved Mysteries" reenactment footage.The water was so dirty (bits of broccoli were put in the tank to make it look like the murky water in the cave) that the directors were concerned audiences wouldn't see closeup shots of the divers with their masks on underwater. And then there was reenacting the rescues."We were worried we were going too far with the dramatics," Chin said.Particularly, they were worried about the first rescue Stanton and Volanthen make before even finding the kids. They encounter a group of scared men who were trying to pump the water out of the caves and got trapped. The reenactment footage shows the men flailing wildly underwater as Stanton and Volanthen get them out of the caves."I was like, 'But is this over the top?'" Chin recalled asking Stanton and Volanthen after shooting the scene at Pinewood. "They were like, 'Not at all.' It was certified in 1983 and deployed for the first time a year later at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles.When the Bureau decided to create a dedicated hostage-rescue unit, it turned to the best for help. <keyword id="621779" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Delta-Force">Delta Force</keyword>, SEAL Team 6, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-non-us-special-operations-forces-from-around-the-world-2020-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">British Special Air Service (SAS)</a> operators were pivotal in the HRT's early days.At first, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/legendary-leaders-who-transformed-us-military-special-operations-units-2020-11" target="_top">recently created Delta Force</a> and SEAL Team 6 were eager to share a piece of the pie but soon had to back off due to the HRT's different rules of engagement. For example, as federal agents, HRT operators must submit their weapons for forensic analysis after an operation that involves casualties.Over 200 field agents applied for the initial 50 spots in HRT, including several Marines and soldiers and four Navy SEALs, among them Tom Norris, a one-eyed Medal of Honor recipient. Several had seen combat in Vietnam.In the HRT's early days, operators served part-time in the unit and continued their regular special-agent duties. In Utah in 1988, HRT operators helped resolve a standoff; in Virginia in 1988, an HRT sniper took down a man who was holding his girlfriend and son hostage as he was about to kill the woman. In Alabama in 1992, the HRT rescued 10 prison guards who had been taken hostage by over 100 Cuban inmates.But debacles at Ruby Ridge, Idaho, in 1992 and Waco, Texas, in 1993 put the unit in the limelight for the wrong reasons. As a result, the HRT was reorganized and doubled in size. The September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks took the unit to a whole different level.The HRT had previously worked with the military's Joint <keyword id="637658" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="special-operations">Special Operations</keyword> Command (JSOC) to hunt war criminals in the Balkans, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq saw HRT operators augmenting Tier 1 military units on raids, helping with forensics.In 2011, when SEAL Team 6's Gold Squadron attempted to rescue four Americans taken hostage by Somali pirates, the HRT was there. One operator helped during the negotiations, and another went in with the SEALs after the pirates killed the hostages. When US intelligence tracked one of the conspirators in Somalia, two HRT operators brought him back to face justice.HRT operators also helped Delta Force take down Ahmed Abu Khattala, suspected of participating in the deadly attacks on US facilities in Benghazi, Libya, in 2014.Domestically, the unit conducted successful hostage rescues in Alabama in 2013 and Atlanta in 2014. It also participated in the hunt for the Boston Marathon bomber in 2013.<h2>Selection and training</h2><div type="image" title="FBI HRT selectees" height="621" width="840" msid="79769457" hostid="261"></div>FBI special agents must have served two to three years in a field office in order to join HRT. Both men and women can apply.To become an operator, applicants must pass a grueling two-week selection and then an eight-month operator training course similar to SEAL Team 6's Green Team and Delta Force's operator training course.During selection, candidates are pushed to their physical and mental limits, undergoing repeated stressful events and little sleep. On the first day alone, they must complete the basic fitness test that includes a run, swim, pull-ups, push-ups, and climbing stairs while wearing a 55-pound vest and carrying a 35-pound battering ram.But top physical fitness isn't the only thing instructors are looking for.Top-notch marksmanship, teamwork, and a cool head during arrest scenarios are also a must. Throughout the selection, candidates get no feedback; they don't know if they're doing well or not, which adds to their stress. The hostage-takers moved their captives in the jungles of the Boma Plateau in the southeastern corner of what is now <keyword id="12440861" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="south-sudan" source="Orion">South Sudan</keyword>.Always on standby for such contingencies, Delta Force spun up for a potential hostage-rescue operation but was quickly told to stand down. The Pentagon explicitly ordered that no Delta Force operators be directly involved in the operation.So instead, two Delta Force operators — an officer and a senior enlisted operator — flew to Africa and joined the Sudanese counterterrorism unit of about 30 operators.The Delta Force operators had trained the Sudanese special operators the previous year. A team of six American commandos and one British SAS operator had gone to the African country and essentially set up a counterterrorism capability for the Sudanese military.The American commandos went from the capital of Khartoum to the city of Juba, close to the area where the hostages and their captors were hidden. In addition to the Delta Force element, the Pentagon deployed a signals team from an intelligence special missions unit to monitor the communications of the hostage-takers.The Pentagon also deployed a Keyhole reconnaissance satellite to take pictures of the bandit's camp. Since the Sudanese were taking the lead on the operation, JSOC and the CIA passed the satellite pictures to them.The Sudanese commandos and their American advisers spent the next two weeks watching the camp and rehearsing their plan.<div type="image" title="US Army Delta Force advisers and Sudanese commandos" height="720" width="960" msid="87742063" hostid="261"></div>The main assault force was composed of 14 Sudanese commandos whose job was to secure the hostages.
