Carlos Ghosn's transformation from business icon to international fugitive was entirely predictable, industry leaders say. But his next act could surprise everyone.

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP Photo/Terry Chea</span></p><p class="caption">Carlos Ghosn, chairman and CEO of Nissan, speaks next to a prototype of the autonomous driving Nissan Leaf at Renault-Nissan Silicon Valley in Sunnyvale, Calif., Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Nissan is rooting for Tesla.</p><p>The Japanese car company best-known for the legendary Z-car and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nissan-gtr-2017-is-here-2016-3">the monstrous GT-R</a> supercar also makes the Leaf, an electric 5-door hatchback that gets about 100 miles per charge.</p><p>In an interview <a href="http://www.autonews.com/article/20160405/OEM05/160409904/ghosn-welcomes-rush-of-tesla-model-3-preorders">with Automotive News</a> this week, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn applauded the avalanche of Tesla Model 3 preorders that Tesla has tallied so far.</p><p>The hundreds of thousands of potential buyers who put down a $1,000 deposit make for some "good competition," Ghosn said.</p><p>Globally, Nissan blows away the competition in EV sales. The company and its French partner, Renault, sold 302,000 electric vehicles worldwide in 2015 - 43,700 of those were Nissan Leafs. <a href="http://nissannews.com/en-US/nissan/usa/channels/U-S-Sales-Reports/releases/nissan-group-reports-december-and-2015-calendar-year-u-s-sales">More than 17,200</a> Leafs were sold in the US last year.</p><p>Ghosn said the Model 3's potential success will help spur further EV development. "The fact that so many people are willing to pay a down payment to get this car is a good sign," Ghosn said. "Competition for EVs is picking up."</p><p>For various reasons, automakers at large have waded cautiously into the EV market. Low gas prices in the US have been driving sales of trucks and SUVs - which in turn yield impressive profit margins for car makers. And consumer appetites for those vehicles routinely outpace America's old workhorse, the family sedan - which, by the way, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-family-sedan-is-dead-2015-12">is dead</a>.</p><p>Additionally, demand for EVs hasn't quite caught up to the rest of the market. The automaker that sells the most electric cars in the world is rooting for Tesla

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters/Mike Blake</span></p><p class="caption">Tesla CEO Elon Musk.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/tesla">Tesla</a> posted a bigger-than-expected <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-second-quarter-earnings-miss-wall-street-expectations-revenue-2019-7">second-quarter loss</a>, even though it sold a record number of vehicles.</li><li><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/tsla-stock">Tesla</a> is a mess, but so are most car companies - we just don't notice because they're all so old and large.</li><li>On the positive side, attention has shifted away from Tesla's demand questions and talk of bankruptcy has died off; the focus is now rightly on paths to profits.</li><li>However, profitability might not be Tesla's best option at this point.</li><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</strong></li></ul><p>The big takeaway from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-second-quarter-earnings-miss-wall-street-expectations-revenue-2019-7">Tesla's second-quarter earnings</a>, reported on Wednesday, was that the company is up against the fundamental problem of being a car maker.</p><p>After record vehicle deliveries of roughly 95,000 units in the quarter, Tesla still lost over $400 million on revenue of about $6.4 billion. With $5 billion in cash on hand and triple-digit sales increases on a percentage basis, it's obvious that Tesla's critics have been wrong about the company's impending bankruptcy and flagging demand.</p><p>What they've failed to focus on has actually been right in front on them all along: Tesla is trying to become the first new American car maker to succeed in decades.</p><p>To an extent, Tesla has succeeded. It dominates the all-electric vehicle market (which is still quite small) and its vehicles, production glitches notwithstanding, have been generally excellent (I've driven them all and haven't found much to complain about).</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> </em><em><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wall-street-analysis-suggests-tesla-is-strategically-undervalued-fact-check-2019-7" data-analytics-position="4">A major Wall Street analyst recently suggested that Tesla is 'strategically undervalued,' but is that true?</a></em></p><p>But now's a good time for me to haul out my two favorite quotes about the auto industry. </p><h2>A tough business - that could all go away</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.apimages.com/metadata/Index/Thailand-Auto-Show/6b62bfee8bcf41f5b062c295a1dc29a1/23/0">Sakchai Lalit/AP</a></span></p><p class="caption">Former Ford CEO Alan Mulally.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Number one comes from Bill Ford, great-grandson of Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Company's current chairman. At a dinner a few years ago, I asked him to sum up the industry. "It's a tough business," he said, bluntly. "You have to fight for every sale."</p><p>Number two comes from former Ford CEO Alan Mulally, who got the company though the financial crisis while General Motors and Chrysler were going bankrupt and being bailed out by the federal government. After the dust had settled, Mulally was in his office at Ford's headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. In an anecdote I used for my book <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Return-Glory-Revival-Victory-Toughest/dp/0802126502">Return to Glory</a><em> </em>about Ford's comeback, Mulally said that he could look out one window and see GM's headquarters. He could look out another and just see Chrysler's.</p><p>"I do this all the time, because I like to keep an eye on everyone," Mulally said. "But I also do it to remind myself of something. I remind myself that this could all go away."</p><p>From the outside, the auto industry appears solid, ancient in business terms. Ford and GM are each over 100 years old. But the business is almost always on the edge. Ford, under CEO Jim Hackett, is in the midst of an $11-billion restructuring and is struggling to fix its China operations. GM sold off its perennially underperforming European division in 2017 and had to deal with a crisis in its South Korean business in 2018.</p><p>The late Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne spent much of his tenure paying down his company's debt, which prevented it from aggressively investing in new technologies - driverless cars and electric vehicles. Volkswagen was rocked by a emission-testing scandal that effectively wrecked its diesel business, a cornerstone of European sales. The former chairman and architect of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance has been in a Japanese jail awaiting trial on financial malfeasance charges since last year.</p><p>I could go on, but you get the idea. The people who run the global car business look sharp and confident in their suits and ties, but inside the armor, they're always sweating.</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cruise-self-driving-plans-for-san-francisco-ceo-medium-post-2019-7">Cruise delays its launch of robo-taxis</a></em></p><h2>Money, money, money, and more money</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Tesla</span></p><p class="caption">Not cheap.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The basic challenge is that although a large automaker can bring in tens of billions in quarterly revenue, it costs a staggering amount of money to manufacture cars and trucks. Profit margins are usually 10% at best, for all but the highest-ticket luxury vehicles (and well-appointed pickup trucks, which have helped the Detroit Big Three bolster their balance sheets). </p><p>The more cars Tesla builds, the more it understands this. CEO Elon Musk had once hoped to alter the math by bringing much more automation to his factories, but that failed miserably. In fact, it failed so badly that Tesla had to erect a crude temporary assembly line under a tent in its parking lot to maintain production targets - it was an assembly line that wouldn't have looked unfamiliar to Henry Ford himself.</p><p>Investors simply can't seem to grasp this. Many want Tesla to be valued like a Silicon Valley startup, with epic growth but a cost structure that boils down to a dozen programmers in their twenties, some laptops, a WeWork space, and cold brew on tap. Gigantic rolls of aluminum and the machine to stamp them into body panels don't figure into the equation. Don't even think about a payroll of 40,000 employees.</p><p>Tesla's core business, therefore, is messy. But so is every other automaker's - we just don't notice because they're all so big. Smooth vehicle launches are actually quite rare; it's better to think of every new car that comes along as the culmination of an onerous, expensive, multi-year exercise in problem-solving at best and maddening frustration <em>not </em>at worst but as a matter of course.</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-ford-f150-prototype-towed-a-million-pounds-2019-7">An all-electric Ford F-150 pickup truck prototype has towed more than a million pounds</a></em></p><h2>A straightforward path to profits</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Tesla</span></p><p class="caption">The aging Model S.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>That said, with the focus now off Tesla's demand and the chimerical bankruptcy and back on the odds of profits, the company's path to a positive margin is straightforward: build fewer cars and charge more for them. For years, Tesla has been trying to be two automakers in one: a luxury marque selling $100,000-plus vehicles; and an entry-level premium brand that starts at $40,000 or so.</p><p>That isn't working, for various reasons. A big one is that Tesla, unlike BMW, sells only three vehicles that aren't well differentiated. BMW sells 18 models in the US, from all-electric compacts to large SUVs and high-performance sport sedans. Tesla is also trying to get away with avoiding a redesign of it's aging flagship Model S and Model X vehicles - understandable given that it's preoccupied with launching a crossover variant of the its Model 3. But there's a reason why BMW and others strive to keep their high-ticket cars fresh: sustainable profits.</p><p>OK, so with all that, here's why Tesla is run this way: Musk isn't terribly interested, down deep, in building a long-term electric-car business. He might disagree with that statement, but the reality of what Tesla has pulled off argues against his objections. There was no electric-vehicle market before Tesla; now there's one that, in the US, could could see overall EV sales become a meaningful component of the car market, after over a decade of disappointment. Numerous major automakers are now undertaking EV rollouts, encouraged by Tesla's validation of the market.</p><p>The big guys can manage the mess better than Tesla because they're used to it. In a few years, Musk could plausibly declare mission accomplished and allow Tesla to be what it should be: a high-margin purveyor of luxury EVs. Tesla's business is a mess - but it's actually not that much different from every other car company

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Fisker</span></p><p class="caption">The Fisker Karma.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Henrik Fisker's first stab at an electric car went up in flames - literally.</p><p>His company, Fisker Automotive, was the force behind an electric hybrid called the Fisker Karma in 2012. The $100,000 car had a host of battery issues that caused the automaker and its battery supplier, A123 Systems, to recall more than 600 Karmas, <a href="https://www.wired.com/2012/08/fisker-karma-fire-part-deux/" target="_blank">Wired reported</a> at the time.</p><p>Separately, the Karma was known to <a href="http://jalopnik.com/5933859/exclusive-fisker-karma-hybrid-sets-itself-on-fire-and-burns-while-owner-gets-groceries?tag=fisker-karma" target="_blank">burst into flames</a>, which was said to be caused by the engine compartment rather than the battery. Fisker Automotive went bankrupt in 2011.</p><p>But, as <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-10-04/henrik-fisker-is-starting-a-namesake-car-company-again" target="_blank">first reported</a> by Bloomberg, Fisker is back and working on an electric car under the newly minted Fisker Inc. that will be revealed in 2017. Fisker has promised a range exceeding 400 miles - which would be huge, considering the longest range currently belongs to the high-end version of the Model S, which gets 315 miles on a single charge.</p><p>We took a closer look at the revolutionary battery tech Fisker is planning to use in the electric car that would power what could very well be a Tesla killer.</p><h2>A Nobel-prize winning material</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Fisker Automotive</span></p><p class="caption">Henrik Fisker</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Rather than working with conventional lithium-ion batteries, Fisker is turning to graphene supercapacitors.</p><p>Graphene is the thinnest material on Earth and strongest material known to man. Supercapacitors also store energy like batteries, but the way they do so allows them to have faster charge times. However, the flip side is they don't usually store as much of a charge.</p><p>The energy applications of graphene have been known for quite some time. In 2010, the Nobel Prize in Physics went to Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov for <a href="https://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/physics/laureates/2010/press.html" target="_blank">pioneering research on graphene</a> that opened the door for scientists to study its many applications, like its potential as a battery that can conduct energy better and charge faster.</p><p>"Graphene shows a higher electron mobility, meaning that electrons can move faster through it. This will, e.g. charge a battery much faster," Lucia Gauchia, an assistant professor of energy storage system at Michigan Technological University, told Business Insider. "Graphene is also lighter and it can present a higher active surface, so that more charge can be stored."</p><p>But what has prevented it from having a real-world application has been the high cost associated with producing it.</p><p>"The reason we are not using it yet, even though the material is not a new one, is that there is no mass production for it yet that can show reasonable cost and scalability," Gauchia explained.</p><p>But Fisker Inc.'s battery division, Fisker Nanotech, is patenting a machine can currently produce as much as 1,000 kilograms of graphene at a cost of just 10 cents a gram, Jack Kavanaugh, the head of Fisker Nanotech, told Business Insider.</p><h2>The 'super battery'</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Jack Kavanaugh</span></p><p class="caption">Jack Kavanaugh</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Kavanaugh hails from Nanotech Energy, a research group composed of UCLA researchers who specialize in the graphene supercapacitor Fisker will use in his car.</p><p>"This particular technology that we're working on and are using for Fisker Nanotech is a hybrid," Kavanaugh told Business Insider. "We have been able to take the best of what supercapacitors can do and the best of what batteries can do and are calling it a super battery."</p><p>Aside from the prohibitive cost of using graphene, another limiting factor has conventionally been that supercapacitors don't hold as much of a charge as standard lithium-ion batteries because they have a lower energy density.</p><p>Kavanaugh claims his machine addresses that issue by "altering" the structure of graphene.</p><p>"The challenge with using graphene in a supercapacitor in the past has been that you don't have the same density and ability to store as much energy. Well, we have solved that issue," he said. The project was funded by Nanotech Energy.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Overall, Kavanaugh is promising a product that not only holds more charge and charges faster than lithium ion batteries, but also has a better cycle life. Improving the cycle life means you don't have to swap out the battery for a new one as frequently as you need to for lithium ion batteries.</p><p>"Our battery technology is so much better than anything out there," Fisker told Business Insider. "Our battery technology is the first battery technology that has taken the major leap, the next big step."</p><p>UCLA researchers like Maher El-Kady and Richard Kaner <a href="http://appft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&amp;Sect2=HITOFF&amp;p=1&amp;u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-bool.html&amp;r=0&amp;f=S&amp;l=50&amp;TERM1=el-kady&amp;FIELD1=IN&amp;co1=AND&amp;TERM2=&amp;FIELD2=&amp;d=PG01" target="_blank">hold several patents</a> related to graphene superconductors. Both Kaner and El-Kady work for Nanotech Energy.</p><p>Kavanaugh said prototypes of the "super battery" have already been made, with new versions of the prototype coming in a few weeks. He said the plant that will actually produce the battery will most likely open in Janaury and will be located in northern California.</p><p>It's worth noting that Tesla CEO Elon Musk actually came to Silicon Valley to <span>earn a PhD working on supercapacitors, and has been <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2011/03/25/elon-musk-says-super-capacitors-not-batteries-will-be-breakthrough-for-evs/" target="_blank">on record</a> saying that supercapacitors, not batteries, will be the big breakthrough for EVs.</span></p><h2>Cheaper than the Chevy Bolt?</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Chevrolet</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Fisker said he plans to reveal the electric car in the latter half of 2017.</p><p>Fisker told Business Insider that he first plans to roll out a luxury vehicle that will most likely be built at VLF Automotive, the car company Fisker is a part of that is building his supercar, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/best-features-in-henrik-fisker-force-1-supercar-photos-2016-9" target="_blank">the Force 1</a>. That first luxury electric car will have a limited production run.</p><p>"I don't want to say what kind of car, but it won't be a supercar," he said. "It will probably be in the price range of the higher end of the Model S."</p><p>Fisker said he will then produce a consumer-friendly electric car that will be in "an even lower cost segment of both the [Chevy] Bolt and the Model 3."</p><p>The cars will boast ranges greater than 400 miles, Fisker claims. </p><p>But Fisker better move quickly because competition in the EV space is mounting quickly. As mentioned earlier, Tesla currently offers a Model S that can drive 315 miles on a single charge. By the time Fisker unveils his electric car, Tesla may have already beaten that range or gotten closer to it.</p><p>Additionally, the Chevy Bolt will be the first consumer-friendly electric car with a competitive range of 238 miles when it hits dealerships by the end of this year. Like Tesla, Chevy will look to improve that range by the time 2017 rolls around.</p><p>And that only touches the surface of the competition out there. Electric car start-ups like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/faraday-future-production-electric-self-driving-car-2016-8" target="_blank">Faraday Future</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/atieva-tesla-rival-electric-car-picture-2016-10" target="_blank">Atieva</a> are looking for a piece of the pie. Henrik Fisker is using a revolutionary new battery to power his Tesla killer

<p>For many, the differences that separate the varying forms of auto racing may be blurry. So we created a quick rundown outlining four of the world's most prominent forms of racing. </p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">F1 cars are single-seat open-wheel racers constructed almost completely from carbon fiber composites. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">For the 2014 season, all cars will be powered by 1.6 litre turbocharged V-6 hybrid engines provided by Ferrari, Renault, or Mercedes-Benz. Although teams are pathologically private about the exact power output of their engines, <a href="http://www.formula1.com/inside_f1/rules_and_regulations/technical_regulations/8699/" target="_blank">Formula One technical regulations indicate that the V-6 engine </a>will put around 600 horsepower with the hybrid drivetrain supplying an addition 160 ponies when needed. </span></p>
<p><strong>Where do they race and when?</strong></p>
<p><span>The 2014 Formula One season consists of 19 races in 19 countries covering five continents. Unlike NASCAR, which races predominantly on ovals tracks, the F1 calendar is made up strictly of purpose built road courses or temporary street circuits. </span></p>
<p><strong>How fast do they go?</strong></p>

With races in exotic locations like Monaco, Bahrain, and Singapore, F1 is often a hotbed of celebrity activity.</p>
<p><strong>Who are the biggest stars?</strong></p>
<p>Formula One is driven by big name teams like Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes-AMG, and Red Bull. <p>Like Formula One, IndyCars are all carbon fiber single-seat open-wheel racers. Unlike Formula One, IndyCar budgets are much lower because teams don't have to design and build a completely new design every year.
