Anyone following the rhetoric around <keyword id="107950" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Artificial-Intelligence" source="Orion">artificial intelligence</keyword> in recent years has heard one version or another of the cl<keyword id="6355999" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI" source="Orion">ai</keyword>m that AI is inevitable. Common themes are that AI is already here and indispensable, and people who are bearish on it harm themselves. In the business world, AI advocates tell companies and workers that they will fall behind if they fail to integrate generative AI into their operations. In the sciences, AI advocates promise that AI will aid in curing hitherto intractable diseases. In higher education, AI promoters admonish teachers that students must learn how to use AI or risk becoming uncompetitive when it comes time to find a job. In national security, AI's champions say that either the nation invests heavily in AI weaponry, or it will be at a disadvantage against the Chinese and Russians, who are already doing so. The argument across these different domains is essentially the same: The time for AI skepticism has come and gone. The <keyword id="6355118" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="technology" source="Orion">technology</keyword> will shape the future, whether you like it or not. You have the choice to learn how to use it or be left out of that future. Anyone trying to stand in the technology's way is as hopeless as the manual weavers who resisted the mechanical looms in the early 19th century. In the past few years, my colleagues and I (Nir Eisikovits, Professor of Philosophy and Director, Applied Ethics Center, UMass Boston) have been studying the ethical questions raised by the widespread adoption of AI, and I believe the inevitability argument is misleading. <h2>History and hindsight</h2> This claim is the most recent version of a deterministic view of technological development. It's the belief that innovations are unstoppable once people start working on them. In other words, some genies don't go back in their bottles. The best you can do is harness them for your good purposes. This deterministic approach to tech has a long history. It's been applied to the influence of the printing press as well as to the rise of automobiles and the infrastructure they require, among other developments. But I believe that when it comes to AI, the technological determinism argument is both exaggerated and oversimplified. <h2>AI in the field(s)</h2> Consider the contention that businesses can't afford to stay out of the AI game. The case has yet to be made that AI is delivering significant productivity gains to the firms that use it. A report in The <keyword id="20856675" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="economist" source="keywords">Economist</keyword> in July 2024 suggests that so far, the technology has had almost no economic impact. AI's role in higher education is also still very much an open question. Though universities have, in the past two years, invested heavily in AI-related initiatives, evidence suggests they may have jumped the gun. The technology can serve as an interesting pedagogical tool. For example, creating a Plato chatbot that lets students have a text conversation with a bot posing as Plato is a cool gimmick. However, AI is already starting to displace some of the best tools teachers have for assessment and for developing critical thinking, such as writing assignments. The college essay is going the way of the dinosaurs as more teachers give up on the ability to tell whether their students are writing their papers themselves. What's the cost-benefit argument for giving up on writing, an important and useful traditional skill? In the sciences and medicine, the use of AI seems promising. Its role in understanding the structure of proteins, for example, will likely be significant for curing diseases. The technology is also transforming medical imaging and has been helpful in accelerating the drug discovery process. But the excitement can become exaggerated. AI-based predictions about which cases of COVID-19 would become severe have roundly failed, and doctors rely excessively on the technology's diagnostic ability, often against their own better clinical judgment. And so, even in this area, where the potential is great, AI's ultimate impact is unclear. In national security, the argument for investing in AI development is compelling. Since the stakes can be high, the argument that if the Chinese and the Russians are developing AI-driven autonomous weapons, the United States can't afford to fall behind has real purchase. But a complete surrender to this form of reasoning, though tempting, is likely to lead the <keyword id="19899807" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="u-s-" source="keywords">U.S.</keyword> to overlook the disproportionate impact of these systems on nations that are too poor to participate in the AI arms race. The major powers could deploy the technology in conflicts in these nations. And, just as significantly, this argument de-emphasizes the possibility of collaborating with adversaries on limiting military AI systems, favoring arms race over arms control.<h2> One step at a time</h2> Surveying the potential significance and risks of AI in these different domains merits some skepticism about the technology. I believe that AI should be adopted piecemeal and with a nuanced approach rather than subject to sweeping claims of inevitability. In developing this careful take, there are two things to keep in mind: -First, companies and entrepreneurs working on artificial intelligence have an obvious interest in the technology being perceived as inevitable and necessary, since they make a living from its adoption. It's important to pay attention to who is making claims of inevitability, and why. -Second, it's worth taking a lesson from recent history. Over the past 15 years, smartphones and the social media apps that run on them have come to be seen as a fact of life - a technology as transformative as it is inevitable. Then data started emerging about the <keyword id="6354774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mental-health" source="Orion">mental health</keyword> harms they cause teens, especially young girls. School districts across the United States started to ban phones to protect the attention spans and mental health of their students. And some people have reverted to using flip phones as a quality of life change to avoid smartphones. After a long experiment with the mental health of kids, facilitated by claims of technological determinism, Americans changed course. What seemed fixed turned out to be alterable. There is still time to avoid repeating the same mistake with artificial intelligence, which potentially could have larger consequences for society.

Is AI dominance inevitable? A technology ethicist says no, actually

Remain alert says Union Health Minister as India records 3,038 fresh Covid-19 cases

Several studies, according to the study, have already shown that remdesivir can shorten recovery time in patients with COVID-19, although there are conflicting reports on whether the drug prevents patients from dying. "The results showed a clear difference in patient survival based on when they received treatment with remdesivir," said <keyword id="15594615" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="takeo-fujiwara" source="Orion">Takeo Fujiwara</keyword>, senior author of the study. "In-hospital mortality rates were significantly lower in ICU patients who received remdesivir and corticosteroids within 9 days of symptom onset than in patients whose treatment with remdesivir started 10 or more days after they first developed symptoms," said Fujiwara. A small number of patients experienced adverse events such as a rash, requiring them to stop taking remdesivir, while a greater proportion experienced acute kidney injury or liver injury but was able to continue treatment, the study said. "Our findings suggest that at least in a largely Japanese patient population with severe to critical COVID-19, early treatment with remdesivir and corticosteroids is associated with decreased mortality," said Hanafusa. Given the survival benefit demonstrated in this study, the time that has elapsed since symptom onset should be considered when using remdesivir to treat patients who are critically ill with COVID-19. The varying effectiveness of remdesivir at different time points may reflect increasing viral load and lung damage over time and could help explain why the effectiveness of this drug remains controversial. Remdesivir could reduce Covid mortality if given within 9 days of symptom onset, says new study

There are six pharmaceutical giants in India — including Hetero Labs, Jubilant Lifesciences, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Biocon firm Syngene and Zydus Cadila Healthcare — who have signed a non-exclusive agreement with Gilead to produce Remdesivir. The WHO study is likely to be a setback for all the pharmaceutical companies producing Remdesivir. The increasing number of cases in India drove the demand for Remdesivir. According to industry experts, Remdesivir was bringing in at least ₹6.5 million to ₹13 million in revenues per day at the current caseload. “Assuming 5% to 10% market share, we estimate current demand at 1,200 to 2,400 vials per day, which translates to ₹6.5 million to ₹ 13 million in revenues per day at the current caseload. We factor in ₹1.2 billion and ₹0.9 billion in sales from Remdesivir in FY21F and FY22F respectively,” a Nomura report dated October 2020 said. WHO isn’t alone in its skepticism of Gilead’s Remdesivir Remdesivir emerged as one of the most preferred treatments for COVID-19 — this new found disease that was threatening the world — largely driven by Gilead’s narrative. Paul disclosed the purchases 16 months after a mandatory 45-day deadline under the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act, which is designed to combat insider trading by members of congress."This filing, coming over a year late and detailing the financial interest a senator held in a company producing an antiviral drug from the onset of a global pandemic, is a clear example of why greater STOCK Act enforcement is needed," said Kedric Payne, general counsel and senior director of ethics at Campaign Legal Center, <a href="https://campaignlegal.org/press-releases/breaking-campaign-legal-center-files-complaint-against-sen-rand-paul-failure-comply">in a press release.</a>The complaint also noted that Republican Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina and former Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler of Georgia made stock trades at roughly the same time. Both faced widespread public criticism and accusations of insider trading. Burr stepped down from his position chairing the Senate Intelligence Committee, while Loeffler lost re-election."Under these circumstances, there is probable cause to believe that Sen. Paul delayed filing his disclosure to avoid similar consequences," said the group's letter to Sens. Commonly used cholesterol-lowering <keyword id="31644" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="statins" source="Orion">statins</keyword> may reduce the risk of death and severity of Covid-19 disease, says a new study. According to the <keyword id="389462" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="american-heart-association" source="Orion">American Heart Association</keyword>, one in four Americans over 40 take statins to lower their <keyword id="32472" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cholesterol" source="Orion">cholesterol</keyword> and reduce their risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases. "While there is no 'magic bullet' to help patients who are very ill with Covid-19, statins decrease inflammation, which may help reduce the severity of the disease," said lead author Ettore <keyword id="15335892" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="crimi" source="Orion">Crimi</keyword> University of Central Florida, Orlando. "Results of our study clearly showed regular statin use is associated with reduced risk of death and improved outcomes in hospitalized Covid-19 patients," Crimi added. For the study, presented at the ANESTHESIOLOGY 2022 annual meeting, the team analysed the electronic medical records of 38,875 patients hospitalised for Covid-19 at 185 hospitals in the US between January 1 and September 30, 2020. Of those patients, 30 per cent regularly used statins to treat high cholesterol. Statin users had a 37 per cent lower risk of dying from Covid-19 than those who did not use statins. In addition, regular statin users were significantly less likely to be discharged to hospice, be admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) or develop blood clots. They also had shorter hospital stays and spent less time on a ventilator. While Covid-19 causes inflammation, in some cases, the immune system creates further inflammation by responding too aggressively to the infection. This extreme reaction causes much of the damage to the body, including difficulty breathing and damage to the lungs, kidneys, heart, brain and vascular system. The anti-inflammatory actions of statins "cool the process" so that the disease is not as severe, Crimi said. One in four Americans over the age of 40 take statins to lower their cholesterol and reduce their risk of heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases, according to the American Heart Association, making them one of the most commonly prescribed drugs. The drug will be sold at an approximate price of ₹4,000 per vial. Upadhyay told CNBC that the company is also preparing to set up a Remdesivir manufacturing facility in-house. Remdesivir is considered a key drug in the fight against Covid-19. The drug’s popularity grew after a randomised clinical trial used the drug on 1,063 patients over 60 centres across US, Europe and Asia and saw faster clinical recovery in hospitalised patients. To expand the supply of Remdesivir, US-based Gilead earlier announced non-exclusive voluntary licensing agreements with generic pharmaceutical manufacturers based in India, Egypt and Pakistan. The agreements allow Cipla and other companies including Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd.; Hetero Labs Ltd.; Syngene, a Biocon company; and Zydus Cadila Healthcare Ltd. to manufacture Remdesivir for distribution in 127 countries. Government cracks down on Remdesivir black market The Union Health Ministry has asked all the states to take all measures to ensure that Remdesivir is not sold in the black market. Cipla says COVID-19 drug Remdesivir will hit market this week

According to a <a href="https://www.gilead.com/news-and-press/company-statements/gilead-issues-a-voluntary-nationwide-recall-of-two-lots-of-veklury">statement</a> from <keyword id="12678722" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="gilead" source="Orion">Gilead</keyword> Sciences, a nationwide recall of two lots of the drug is underway."Gilead Sciences Inc. received a customer complaint, confirmed by the firm's investigation, of the presence of glass particulates," Gilead said in a <a href="https://www.gilead.com/news-and-press/company-statements/gilead-issues-a-voluntary-nationwide-recall-of-two-lots-of-veklury">statement</a>. "An injectable product that contains glass particulates may result in local irritation or swelling in response to the foreign material," the company added. "If the glass particulate reaches the blood vessels it can travel to various organs and block blood vessels in the heart, lungs or brain which can cause stroke and even lead to death." The two lots, 2141001-1A and 2141002-1A, were distributed to wholesalers between October 25 and November 2. Around 55,000 vials of the drug — the equivalent of doses for some 11,000 patients — are involved in this recall, Gilead spokesman Chris Ridley told <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-12-04/gilead-recalls-55-000-vials-of-covid-drug-due-to-glass-shards?utm_campaign=socialflow-organic&amp;utm_content=business&amp;utm_medium=social">Bloomberg News</a>. However, Gilead noted that there had been no adverse reactions reported in connection with the lots recalled. Beijing, A chemotherapy medication originally developed to treat <keyword id="63672" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lymphoma">lymphoma</keyword> has outperformed the popular remdesivir drug against SARS-CoV-2 in lab settings, and could potentially be repurposed to treat <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">Covid-19</keyword>, say researchers. A novel computational drug screening strategy combined with <keyword id="10531201" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="lab-experiments">lab experiments</keyword> suggest that pralatrexate drug is a promising candidate for Covid-19 patients. The novel screening approach identified four promising <keyword id="14721" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Drugs">drugs</keyword>, which were then tested against SARS-CoV-2 in lab experiments. Two of the drugs, pralatrexate and azithromycin, successfully inhibited replication of the virus. Further lab experiments showed that pralatrexate more strongly inhibited viral replication than did remdesivir, a drug that is currently used to treat some Covid-19 patients, said Haiping Zhang of the <keyword id="10531200" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="shenzhen-institutes">Shenzhen Institutes</keyword> of Advanced Technology in <keyword id="95282" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shenzhen">Shenzhen</keyword>, China. Zhanh and team screened 1,906 existing drugs for their potential ability to inhibit replication of SARS-CoV-2 by targeting a viral protein called RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP). The findings, published in open-access journal <keyword id="1318021" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="PLoS-Computational-Biology">PLOS Computational Biology</keyword>, suggest that pralatrexate could potentially be repurposed to treat Covid-19. "However, this chemotherapy drug can prompt significant side effects and is used for people with terminal lymphoma, so immediate use for Covid-19 patients is not guaranteed. Still, the findings support the use of the new screening strategy to identify drugs that could be repurposed," the researchers noted. With the Covid-19 pandemic causing illness and death worldwide, better treatments are urgently needed. One shortcut could be to repurpose existing drugs that were originally developed to treat other conditions. "We have demonstrated the value of our novel hybrid approach that combines deep-learning technologies with more traditional simulations of molecular dynamics," Zhang said. He and his colleagues are now developing additional computational methods for generating novel molecular structures that could be developed into new drugs to treat Covid-19. Lymphoma drug outperforms Remdesivir against COVID-19 virus

"Our trial suggests that metformin may reduce the likelihood of needing to go to the emergency room or be hospitalised for Covid-19," said <keyword id="14759788" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="carolyn-bramante" source="Orion">Carolyn Bramante</keyword>, Assistant Professor of internal medicine and paediatrics at the <keyword id="5052916" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="university-of-minnesota-medical-school" source="Orion">University of Minnesota Medical School</keyword>. The study examined whether metformin, low-dose fluvoxamine, an antidepressant; and ivermectin, an antiparasitic, or their combinations could serve as possible treatments to prevent ER visits or hospitalisation, as well as Long-Covid in 1,323 participants including pregnant women. The findings, published in the <keyword id="401051" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="new-england-journal-of-medicine" source="Orion">New England Journal of Medicine</keyword>, found no positive effect from treatment with either ivermectin or low-dose fluvoxamine. The study also included both who were vaccinated and those who were not. "Although we know Covid-19 vaccines are highly effective, we know that some new strains of the virus may evade immunity and vaccines may not be available worldwide. So we felt we should study safe, available and inexpensive outpatient treatment options as soon as possible," said Bramante. "Understanding whether outpatient treatments could ensure more people survive the illness if they contract it and have fewer long-term symptoms is an important piece of the pandemic response. "Observational studies and in vitro experiments cannot be conclusive but do contribute to bodies of evidence," Bramante noted.
